Cornelius0791 wins by default in his match versus Manawom. Manawom has unfortunately become unreachable. I will assume that he has dropped out.
Tamari is dropping out for the final round. So, we will still have an even number of players for the final round.
As soon as Patrick and Monty provide me the results of their Third Round match, I will post the matches for the final round of the tournament.
Thanks,

Fall 2012 FC Online Tournament
Final Round Matchups
Code: | Match Player 1 Player 2
----- -------- --------
4-1 ncrcalamine (Romulan) vs Patrick Doyle (Tholian)
4-2 Archer (Klingon) vs Storeylf (Orion)
4-3 Monty (Gorn) vs JimDauphinais (Federation)
4-4 M1A1DAT (Lyran) vs Cornelius0791 (Lyran) |
All matches need to be completed by no later than Thursday, January 31, 2013.
Note that this gives everybody three extra days this month to complete their matches.
Note that the final round "civil war" matchup between M1A1DAT and Cornelius0791 was not reasonably avoidable. The first two matches listed above need to be played as shown due to the results to date. In addition, I have already played both Cornelius0791 and M1A1DAT in the tournament. This said, if M1A1DAT and Cornelius0791 mutually decide to forgo their tournament match, I will grant them both a "bye" of a draw for the final round. (As an aside, nothing precludes M1A1DAT and Cornelius0791 setting up an alternate online match for fun using different empires).
Good luck to everyone!
Thanks,

Lee mission killed one of my D5Ws in the first turn. Learned the hard way that Orions can carronade. Got to range 5 thinking at worst I was facing bolts, and then died.
Lesson learned.

I apologise for what what was probably not an enjoyable game. I don't particularly enjoy winning in such a way.
If you think we can still fit in the game before the end of the month then I'll forgo my victory and play the game again. |

Don't feel bad, you brought the best force you could within the rules and won fair and square. I honestly don't think I could beat your force even knowing carronades are your preferred tactic. The victory should absolutely stand.
I am of the opinion that these tournaments could be a lot more fun if force selection wasn't so often the driving force in victory. I used to play SFB single ship tournaments back in the day before FC. I found it so much more fun because each empire's ship was so carefully balanced with the others. You could bring anything and win.
If forces were pre-selected, with more basic ships, I think it would be more fun. Just my two cents.

Seems like bolts would be near equally menacing--at that range an F bolt has average damage only one less than a 5 point carranode, though obviously more variable damage. Or am I missing a subtlety? [EDIT--I was. It dawned on me eventually that EM must have been involved. I'd never really looked at how well carronades cope with that.] |

No I wasn't EM, its just the chance of missing I was counting on. His first 2 ships rolled 5s and 6s only, the other ship rolled well. Point being is carronades offer guaranteed damage where as bolts can miss. Even EM wouldn't have done much for me since carronades can't miss. It should also be noted I fired over the shoulder at speed 24, I wasn't going to be over run by standard plasma. I didn't even consciously give him range 5, orions are so damn fast!

EM was involved, in a way. The orions closed at 24, under EM in order to prevent an expected klingon long range fight.
At some point we ended at 9, but with the klingons not turn fulfilled and heading at me. That meant that I was pretty much guaranteed to be at range 5 the following impulse barring a HET (which would have just left the klingons being pursued to a map edge) so I dropped EM knowing I was going to be where I wanted. |
