Shapeways

Shapeways is a 3D printing site.
You can have them print designs that you have created, or...

You can scan through the listing of designs they have on file and have any of them 3D printed. The designer sets the price for the piece and Shapeways gets a cut for maintaining the store-front and for printing / shipping the item.

Bill and I both got one of these: Research Stations to use as a Battlestation for ACTASF. His is painted in Fed colors, mine in Klingon.

That's pretty neat. How do they hold up compared to 2500?

What do you mean? As in size-wise compared to the SL2500 minis, or durability?

They are made of Nylon-12 and seem fairly durable. You have multiple material choices, depending on what you want to spend. I chose the cheapest, but in reality I should have chosen the next step up (from White Strong and Flexible to White Detail) since the WSF material is kind of grainy and hard to smooth out with a sanding board.

I dropped one of the freighters on the floor and it suffered less damage than a comparable pewter mini would have. Smile Thankfully it was before painting not afterwards.

As aside, while looking through the site (linked to by Scoutdad), I saw a ship that was a dead ringer for Paravians. It is the Murustan Banshee class Patrol Cruiser.

@Bill

NICE substitutes, Bill. Cool

They'll do till the SL2500's appear. And they give you a nice variety which you could mix and match with the SL2500's.

@Tony

Got a link to your station with its Klingon paintjob?

Mark

Variety is good. I will get some of the Starline 2500 civilian ship minis, but I like more variety.

I've found some promising resin minis elsewhere that I may pick up at some point, including a starbase, a mobile repair ship (think FRD with a tug attached to the front of it), and a shipyard (most expensive, have to think hard about this one). While none of them are exactly canon in appearance they will have great visual appeal at conventions/home games, which is what the game needs more of. Very Happy

Shapeways is also pretty handy if you have an idea for a conversion, a bit of basic skill with 3-D modelling, and are too cack-handed to get the conversion part any other way! Razz It's how I got the extended shuttlebay and modified shuttles for my Federation CDW, and I currently have cunning plans involving custom warp nacelles to feature in a CX conversion...
