The old DD is the original Franz Joseph Designs Destroyer in Booster #91. It is simply a Heavy Cruisers Saucer with a Sensor Dish and Single Nacelle underneath it.

The Old Frigate looks like the current one just less weapons.

Now if you want to go back to the old Terrain Days the Original Destroyer looked identical to the current 2400 Police Corvette.

I think he's talking about old ships like the CA Oriskany, etc.

In general, the "old cruiser" and "old destroyer" classes (which ended up becoming National Guard ships, by the time of the General War) look essentially the same as their later counterparts. Details differ, but the basic configuration did not. They have saucers, and cylindrical engine nacelles, just like the newer ships.

The older ships are sometimes shown as having different hull color and details in some art (influenced by "that tv show with the Quantum Leap guy" in it).

The only real difference I'm aware of is one piece of art that shows the "old frigate" having it's engines up above the saucer on a "yoke" (like the NCL and DW), rather than underneath on struts, the way the Burke-class FF does.

The "old light cruiser" oCL and "old heavy cruiser" oCA classes are a unique breed.

The double wedge-shaped Texas/Province-class oCL old light cruisers are really, really old; Over 100 years old, by the time of the main game. They were originally built as pre-Federation, United Earth military "heavy cruisers". This was in the "sublight", non-tactical-warp, era.

Many years later, the Federation saved a bunch of money by refitting and continuing to use these old ships, rather than build a whole new class of ship for medium-sized jobs.

The "Great"-class oCA old heavy cruiser wasn't really that "old" at all. The two of them were new builds, right at the dawn of the "Middle Years" era. However, they were heavily based on the "old light cruiser" design and thus the name. They were an alternative to the Constitution-class CA; A backup design, just in case. Since the CA worked out splendidly and the oCA wasn't really needed, no more were made.
