hi all,

i am 5thinking about a mini campaign or series of games with my son based around the F5L and 2 F5 squadron. what were the usual missions the squadron undertook and what did they come up against? Did other navies have an equivalent formation?

thanks!

Every navy has an equivalent formation.

Three basic mission categories...

1. Part of a bigger fleet in one battle area.

2. Ships spread out over a wide area, no two together, squadron is just a place they email to get supplies.

3. Rarest of all, the three ships (usually and F5L, F5, and F5D) are sent on one mission. Could be to block an enemy war cruiser, hunt a pirate, protect a key supply convoy or planet, raid an enemy convoy or planet, or (most common and most boring) cruise around in a given area displaying just enough combat power that the enemy doesn't think it worth the bother to send somebody to fight them.

You heard from the man himself.

Other ideas;

1) Squadron on Squadron.
2) Squadron Pirate Supression against a Base Station of some sort.
3) Squadron Defending a Convoy.
4) Squadron Reading a Convoy.
5) Squadron Raiding a Planet.
6) Recapturing a mutinied Capital Ship.
7) Squadron Defending a Base or Mobile Base.

battle 1
Situation
Tholian Patrol Corvette is rescuing and escorting a damaged and lost (just in klingon space) web tender. As they near the DMZ a lone F5 appears.
Result
The Tender doesn't make it, but neither does the F5.

battle 2
Situation
An F5D is tasked to bombard a Tholian outpost protected by a defense web. A Neo Tholian Frigate is in the area.
Result
The F5's kamikaze overrun of the Frigate works with no weapon loss. After a series of swirls around the outpost its each facing is penetrated by a drone and the F5 manages to escape.

battle 3
Situation
Reassigned to the Hyrdan border an F5L and F5D rush to intercept fighters from destroying an important supply convoy.
Result
Four Stringers destroy the smallest freighter and damage the others before being shot down; the Hyrdan cruiser closes and launches the last two stingers after a fly by that cripples the F5L. One more freighter is destroyed and the other almost but manages to limp to safety with the F5D. The Hyrdan, all fighters lost, leaves the area under orders.

Sounds like great scenarios. Sometimes small ships are more fun to fly than standard heavy cruisers. Simpler and yet more challenging.
