THE ANCIENT WINGS ADVANCED ROMULAN
EAGLE-CLASS
DESIGNS OF THE GENERAL WAR
The shipyard (and great houses) that built the original Romulan ships were outraged when production of new Hawk-class ships was assigned to entirely new shipyards owned by other great houses. Over the next decades, they frantically sought contracts for continued production of their designs.
(R4.933) BATTLE EAGLE MEDIUM CARRIER (BEV): Proposed design of which one or two were built. The basic concept was to convert War Eagles under construction into carriers, deleting the plasma-R torpedo around which the hull was normally built and drastically curtailing the battery deck. The result was a barely operable carrier (even by Romulan standards) for a cruiser-sized hull with little ability to defend itself and not enough fighters to launch viable independent strikes. The ships were operated in the hinterlands of the Romulan Star Empire as convoy escorts. It is believed a SNE or BHE served as an escort.
| YEAR | ESCORTS | FIGHTERS |
| Y173-183 | BHE or SNE | 5xG-II, 5xG-SF |
| Y183+ | BHE or SNE | 5xG-III, 5xG-FSF |

L. Plasma-D storage = 50.
FED AND EMPIRE: Ship can be built in Fed and Empire for the cost
of a War Eagle (this includes the nominal cost of conversion by eliminating the plasma-R)
plus the cost of the five fighter factors. The ship cannot be converted from existing War
Eagles. Counter would be a (5) 2-8.
(R4.934) BATTLEHAWK-B DESTROYER LEADER (BHB): This was the Battlehawk version of the leader designs produced for the Snipe-B and King Eagle classes. The BHB design was intended to operate as a leader for Battlehawk squadrons. Like the Snipe-B and King Eagle, the increases in warp power made the ship operationaly different, and it rarely appeared as a squadron leader, but was used instead as a powerful individual ship. The design featured the increased shuttle bay of the King Eagle, and an increase in battery power that corrected the original design's inability to fastload both plasma-G launchers. It proved impossible to add plasma-Fs to the warp nacelles as the plasma-G launchers blocked locations where much of the plasma generating equipment needed to be positioned. A single plasma F was installed on the nose of the ship to increase its firepower. The Romulans (or at least the shipyard) intended the design to go into series production, but apparently decided not to do so as the Battlehawk series was nearing the end of its operational life. SkyHawks were easier to build and better able to operate in the General War. Records indicate that at least a few BHBs were built after the prototype (which was converted from a damaged BattleHawk), but production was limited to just enough to keep the shipyard open to repair existing BattleHawks.

FED AND EMPIRE: Can be converted from a BattleHawk for 2 EP or
built for 6 EP. Counter would be a 6.
(R4.935) KING FALCON HEAVY MAULER (HFA): Intended to increase the effectiveness of the Falcon Mauler by applying the King Eagle upgrade; at least two ships of this type were actually built. The increases in warp power would have made the ship much more mobile in combat and would have enabled it to recharge its batteries faster. The enlarged warp engines would also have made a full powered strike (applying the warp energy directly through the mauler cannon) much more effective. The plasma-F torpedoes were seen as a means of fending off attacking ships while the batteries were recharged rather than as a prelude, or follow up, to a mauler strike. Unfortunately, it was found that the addition of the plasma torpedoes, even those as light as the plasma-F, added too much shock to the frame of ship. To reflect this, two points are added to the die roll result in (D23.223) for each plasma-F torpedo launched or bolted within 32 impulses of the firing of the mauler system. Pseudo plasma torpedoes will add the two points for deception purposes, but this will be deleted when the PPT is revealed, which may be by the Romulan announcing such to prevent a breakdown.

FED AND EMPIRE: Can be converted from a Falcon for 3 EP or built
for 11 EP. Counter would be a 11-10.
(R9.936) SCREECH OWL HEAVY SCOUT (HSC): This design was intended to increase the effectiveness of the Scout Eagle by installing part of the King Eagle upgrade. While the resulting ship was fast and better able to support combat operations with four sensors and a fair amount of power, the Romulans decided not go ahead with series production, prefering to continue the more flexible modular designs of their third generation ships. At least one ship was built (as a prototype) and was assigned to operate in the Romulan exploration zone looking for resources for the war effort. It was reportedly destroyed by ISC forces in Y186.

FED AND EMPIRE: Can be converted from SE for 2 EP. Can be
converted from KE or WE for 3 EP. Costs 9 EP to build. EWP rating 3. Counter identical to
SE.
(R.937) SNIPE-C BATTLE FRIGATE LEADER (SNC): In an effort to upgrade the Snipe series into a more effective combat unit, the shipyard created this design. An existing Snipe-B had two additional decks built onto the underside of the ship (sealing in the landing gear and preventing the ship from taking off if it landed on a planet). The space provided by these decks allowed the Romulans to install additional phasers and the power systems to operate them. The additional weight increased the ship's movement cost and deprived it of the nimble status of the original design. Only one ship was built as the prototype proved that the upgrades to the warp engines were too expensive and difficult to install.
