So, I got me Squadron Box #7 in the mail. Within it, there's a Fed ship which I believe is the War Destroyer. Here's the thing. I have no idea how to glue the bottom third nacelle to the body. I haven't seen any picture that shows what it looks like from the bottom so.....

Recommendations on a Space mat?

Hello guys. I was thinking of getting one big table mat for my games. I've seen one at the usual hobby store I frequent. I think its a Chessex one that is plain black with white hex lines and numbers.

I was wondering. Do you really need the numbers? I would like to play on a "clean" surface without ...

I'm been wrestling with the same problem. I don't think Feds should be a pristine white, but if you tone it down, you get grey. Klingons - grey. Romulans - grey. Gorn - grey.... AAAGGHH!

BTW, is the insignia painted on, or decal?

Holey moley, I totally didn't catch that question when you posted ...

That Orion ship looks fantastic. Great shading, highlighting and detailing. Probably my favorite I've seen so far. What colors did you use for this one?

Thanks Rick.

I use a lot of different paints from various brands. For the Orion ship, the dark blue is "Fenris Grey" from Games Workshop's ...

As far as Orions go: I don't think there is a "Canon" to break.
I have half a dozen or so painted with Flames ...
Some painted " basic black" ...
and even one that matches my first car ...
The next fleet box will be the Blue Raiders and will be painted in the MTSU colors...
My Orion DN, OTOH will ...

I like the subtle variations in shading you can get. They have a great sense of scale.

Agreed. I like 'em! Can't wait to see the NCF with decals. Its a good looking ship. Might have to buy one for myself.

As always, the flash shows up areas that could do with a bit of touching up, which will be ...

Thanks guys! That totally clears things up. And thanks Scoutdad for the Warbird history. I'm so glad the Fed Com community here is so helpful. When I started buying up minis, I had in mind a plan to have my group of gamer friends play Fed Com. I was gonna supply each of us with a Cruiser class ...

Yeah, looking good so far. I like your choice of grey. Once you put on the decals, I'm sure it'll be that extra "cherry on top" that brings it together. Although they look fine now pre-decal.

I think my only critique, and I'm aware its just a matter of personal tastes, is that I think the yellows ...

Good stuuf. Interesting to see someone who doesn't feel bound to paint all his ships from an empire with identical matching schemes - I'm one of those). It's nice to have some variation.

Indeed. Your color choices are really fun. They're different, and yet still feel appropriate for the setting ...

Darren, those minis are absolutely gorgeous! Very inspiring. You did a top notch job on all of those. Always look forward to you updating the flickr site with more goodness.

I wondering what kind of prep you're doing on your minis? The nacelles are so clean and the molds crisp. Some of the other ...

Tony: "Argh! Don't taz me, bro!"
Police: [sigh] "These so-called Artists! They never learn. white & grey - that's all you need to paint everything."

Funny. :D

Well, just so you guys know, I ask about canon and background histories not because I'm afraid to get called out by fellow forum ...

Ah I see. They group up into cartels. I didn't know that. Guess I was thinking more like "Pirates of the Caribbean" or something. :) Heh heh.

Is there a website or something that has background info on each of the factions? I've done searches on Lyrans, Hydrans, Orions, Gorn, and all that. However ...

I like the grey one better... :)

Cool. It's pretty much the one I've decided to go with. Later on, as I paint different class ships in the Klingon fleet, I'll add my own variations on insignia and decorative surface details.

These are looking great man! Nice work.

Love the painted on details ...

Newbie here.

Just wondering...what is this Juggernaut? What race made it? What's the story behind it? Just wondering. Seen it on the cover of Captain's Log.

Well, I'm still experimenting with my new minis and which way to go with them. Having recently starting watching the Star Trek TOS episodes again, I decided to try and go closer to "canon" ....for the most part.

Here's my version of the Klingon D-7, for the purists:
