We just treat this and similar decisions as a bidding war.

"Anyone want to fire?"

"I'll fire my photons."

"Well then I'll fire my disruptors."

"Ok, I'll add in my Phaser Is."

"Anyone else want add anything? No? The we'll resolve fire."

Rule of thumb: you can add shots, must specify target ...

I think it's common sense. No-one is going to force BoM down the throats of the FC players; I'm sure nobody wants to. But for those who fancy using the extra detail, there is the standard ruleset of BoM - because of the Thunderbolt principle.

So, when it comes to what constitutes "Federation ...

Mike,

I like the WoW card idea and have considered it for game using Star Wars mini space fighters. But the number of cards required for squadron vs squadron might be a bit much.

How about a notation system similar to Full Thurst?

With just a few letter codes it's pretty easy to plot maneuvers ...

Now that is cool ! How did you keep your copy looking so new?
I foolishly sold my copy MANY years ago when I sold off most of my board game collection (made sense at the time as I was getting into miniatures).

That image is from Board Game Geek.

Nope, there's an older one! :-D

As for options, no doubt that some players like more options. And more options. And then a few more. With just a couple more for variety.

And before you know it you have ASL, Starfire, SFB, AD&D, etc. Nothing wrong with that for those who enjoy them. But in every ...

For those of us who started with Task Force game's SFB that's really our reference point.

Like so many systems (BattleTech, Squad Leader, etc.) there's a tendency to keep loading up the Christmas tree with more and more ornaments until the branches give way under the massive burden.

Same is ...

FC can be all of that, but moving those ships hex-by-hex does sometimes get tedious.

Since even an FC veteran such as Junior finds the sub-pulse system tedious enough to dispense with it at ranges >15 I think your ideas have merit.

Personally I think FC needs another round of hard-nosed clean-up ...

Obviously you don't actually agree with that, or you wouldn't be using ship charts from SFB, weapons from SFB, etc... The sub-pulse system which you decry as being "close" to SFB is actually one if the biggest differences between the two game systems (the other big difference being how the energy ...

By all means skip the sub-pulses on the way in when everyone's still 30 hexes away from each other. But up in close they're where the game is actually won or lost. Remove them and you're no longer playing FC.

It was that thinking that led us to eliminating sub-pulses.

As for the close-range vs ...

I've actually tightened up some impulses so there were not sub-pulses either. Particularly when everyone gets separated by a decent bit of space and no one is counting on each hex. Anything to speed it up.

That was our point of departure for modifying the movement system. Our weekly gaming group ...

eliminated fractional energy

So phaser-3s now cost you one full point of power to fire? And accelerating or decelerating costs you a full point of power even if the movement cost of your ship is only 1/4?

*confused*

Yes, Phaser 3s now cost 1 point instead of 1/2 point. I have much bigger in ...

We're FC heretics and have made a number of mods to make the game play faster and cleaner. We felt there were way too many artifacts from SFB that slowed things down without significant benefit. These mods include:

1. tweaked turn sequence

2. eliminated fractional energy

3. changed number of ...

In fleet scale a Fed Battle Frigate could inflict about 40 points of damage in an Alpha Strike (excluding its Drone which could do another 12). That's enough to drop the front shield and inflict 22+ points of internal damage on a typical 100 point fleet scale ship (add 12 more if the drone hits ...

Doesn't the SFU timeline mention something about Klingons being descended from something like a "horse people"? I've imagined them as coming from something like Cossacks or Parthians in which case the Sabre dance is perfectly understandable!
