Looking for the article on earth analogies to SFU empires?

At some point, somewhere, I remember reading a piece in which one of the Steves discussed which earth empires and nation-states served as the inspirational analogue for each of the SFU empires.

I can't find it in the CL index, but I think it was in CL. Anybody recall this and where it was?

Thanks.

I've started collecting Reaper Miniatures 10mm line of minis for their game C.A.V. It's a mechs game, but with lots of infantry and vehicles -- all of which I find to be very good proxies for SFM units.

Their newer size bases are designed to work with a wide variety of terrain maps from other games ...

The very things that put some people off of SFB are beginning to attract me: the minutiae, the immense detail, the subtle interactions that can have all kind of unforeseen tactical effects....

Yeah, you're going to love SFB! No game, including ASL, makes me think so hard about every single ...

I haven't played a lot of FedCom, but I think the huge shift between the two is in planning and resource allocation.

A whole lot can happen in 32 individual impulses, and it can be excruciating to have to decide how to allocate energy at the beginning of each turn.

Considering how you're going to ...

Passing of a rated ace.. How many are there?

I saw this ebay auction for a couple old SFB patches and one SFB Rated Ace patch...

As someone who's never made it very far in the tournaments, much less won one, I indignantly thought, "Who would sell their Rated Ace patch?!" But then the fine print noted that it was an estate auction, which ...

In terms of deciding which CL's to buy next, I highly recommend downloading the most recently updated Index to the Captain's Logs (#18-49), which provides ALL the article titles for all the listed Logs. It's a great way of easily assessing which topics may interest you enough to pick up that issue ...

Dale McKee's "Return of the Hood" in CL25 is one of my favorite pieces of fiction. Never played the scenario though.

No, the breadth and depth of the Captain's edition is central to the appeal of the game for me. I love the long, rich history of ship development and functional diversity, with all the fiddly rules to match it.

But I never played any of the pre-Captain's editions, so I'm exempt from any nostalgic ...

Resurrecting this thread to suggest that the Reaper 10 mm C.A.V. line seems ideal for SFM. I picked up a bunch of these on ebay last summer, and backed their recent Kickstarter.

Although CAV is primarily a mechs game, they have a large number of ground vehicles, dropships, and infantry -- all of ...

I'm not in the UK, but I would say, yes. Definitely worth getting into.

This is a game system with nearly 40-year-old roots, and it's not going anywhere. The rules are stable and very solid. There is a wealth of interesting ships and scenarios available, and the company is still introducing new ...

I have a bunch of GHQ and Langton 1:1200 wooden ship minis that I have collected over the years. I haven't done any in a while, but besides the Starline minis, those would be my next choice.

Same here. I have about 80 of them, out of which only about a dozen or so are are painted. I use them with ...

I just bought version 4C from Warehouse 23 two weeks ago, but the link you show above comes up dead for me.
I don't know whether that's an issue with the link, or with my purchase status. Do I get the new edition as an update if I just bought the last edition?

OK, as a neophyte painter, I have to ask: What's your method for painting the rectangular white porthole lights?

Maybe I'm using crappy brushes, but I seem unable to create that kind of detail.

Would Mike consider adding email addresses to the display?

Having a quicker means of contact than just a snail mail address might encourage other players to add their info.

For the record, I'm on Cape Cod in Massachusetts and eager to play more F&E.

Like irashaine, I think I'm a little unusual in that I've been gaming pretty actively for 35 years, but I only started playing SFB two years ago when I moved to a new town and joined a new game group that included an avid SFB player.

I had seen the game being played at conventions in the '80s, but ...
