If CSS is inappropriate, then USS is way more damaging ---

USA had slavery for over 80 years, the CSA for less than 4 ---

I agree with Sgt_G.

We are talking about a prefix for imagined starship names in a science fiction game.

Guys, let's keep this under control.

1) The prefix for the ISC ships is CSS. Live with it.

2) The ISC are not "based" on anyone. They are a fictious empire that "live" in a fictious universe. They are not representative of any real-world country ("good" or "bad").

We will NOT get into a discussion of the CSA and the "truth" about what it was or stood for. I will ruthlessly delete any such post. Likewise, this will not degenerate into an argument around "political correctness". I will let the current ones stand, but will kill any continuation.

Now, if you want to join the discussion of what the ISC are in the game, then feel free. I make no claim I am right. (In fact, I am deliberately overstating the case.) Be that as it may, keep any political discussions to the in-game empires, not real world politics past or present.

I find this whole thread a little too tense. It is only a game and sowing little historical tidbits in helps make it more interesting. I like CSS, it would even get me more interested in playing the race.

[political comment deleted]

In the end this is just a game with made up historys and made up races.

It don't mean nothin.

ISn't it Gorn Confederacy? Sorry if I'm incorrect.

Also, CSS is just an abbreviation, and, in my belief, not a thing based off the CSA. If it were, I could see the point. But the Feds use USS, "United Star Ship," not "United States Ship." Not a big deal.

I am not quite getting the real question, but that is OK.

It is the "Confederation of the Gorn". Their ship designation is "GCS" for "Gorn Confederation Ship".

First, Gary, whatever you choose to use as a prefix in your own home is your business. ADB, Inc. is certainly not going to call the Bureau on the Misuse of Acronyms to go hunt you down. :) However, please do not expect ADB, Inc. to change what is already down as "history". Sometimes those Air Force tapes are clearer as we apply newer technology to the sound, but this time I have a feeling that additional clarity will not change anything.

Second, acronyms usually stand for many things. Just peeking at the Acronym Finder yields 200 results for CSS including Cascading Style Sheet and Combat Support Squadron. ISCS has fewer results (including International Sand Collectors Society), but as always, take the "word" in context. What "lead" means is totally within the context of the sentence. "And the Children Shall Lead" uses a different meaning than "If Scoutdad's house didn't have a great foundation, the weight of the lead in his minis would cause his house to sink."

Third, The name "Confederation of the Gorn" is only slightly more accepted by the Gorns than "Gorn Confederation". When I was working on PD20M, so spake SVC. As he is the Games Overworked Designer, it must be so. :D

Actually, quite a few of them are pewter... and now that you mention it, there are a few cracks in the facade. Please don't mention this possible coinnection to ScoutMom!!!

There are only so many three-letter combinations ... 17,576 to be exact ... and I suspect that for any one of them, you can find someone somewhere that knows some other meaning that they can find somehow offensive.

The ISC represent one of the excellent ironies of the SFU. They are a race of idealists, dreamers, and doves. Yet their natural response upon learning of the rest of the quadrant was a violent solution.

After the shadow of the Andromedan Invasion had finally passed they found that the galaxy had changed them rather than the other way around.

It's a great story.

I must admit, I've always loved the idea of the ISC. "Peace through superior firepower - or else..."

What's not to love!! Adds a slightly scatty touch of fun to the background! :D

"Confederation of the Gorns"

While I'm not a fan of the polity it references, I definitely think someone should paint up a Gorn cruiser like the General Lee from Dukes of Hazard.

Requete:

You're perhaps thinking of Confederacy (as in the Confederate States of America) as opposed to Confederation (as in the Canadian confederation).

Unless, for some reason, you have an issue with Canada...

It doesn't appear to me that anyone is having a problem with anyone's country.
