I made the trip up there myself yesterday, and I agree with Will, the place is unwelcoming and the staff, if you can find them, unpleasant. The store was having some kind of a card game tourny and was very loud.

I was able to get a Kzinti fleet box, sqd box 5, and a blister of Skyhawks. The price was 55% off retail because the normal price was 90% MSRP. I was looking to get some of the ships not in boxes, but the table was well picked over, Thanks Will.

Somebody asked me to measure my Starline 2500 Heavy Freighter, in comparison to the Starline 2400 version of the same ship. Here they are:


They're very, very similar in size. Mongoose insisted on scaling the freighters down from what the "Tech Manual" drawings of the pods indicated, so it ended up being nearly the same size as the legacy mini.

The upside to getting a new mini is that lots of design issues with the old one could be addressed. The old mini really is a pair of small freight minis glued together with some extra sculpting on top (thus the pair of bridge domes, pair of phaser towers, pair of sensor dishes, etc.). The new mini had its details reviewed before Mongoose started modeling. Discounting the scale choice, it's the best freighter mini the SFU has ever had.

Thanks for the info. I had been looking for dimensions on the small freighter, but this shows me what I needed to know; namely that there isn't much size difference between the two.

Will, what is the length and diameter in millimeters of the cargo pod?

The pods are 42.2mm long (but that excludes the bit that is embedded in the fuel tank fairings). A bare pod is probably more like 43mm.

They are about 7.81mm in diameter on my mini (but the turbolift-tube conflicts with getting a true measure). Bear in mind, the minis all differ due to changes in the molds and cooling. The pods look a little flattened and elliptical (much less so than the old SL2400 minis though). I'd suggest fudging them a bit larger in diameter, say 8/8.5mm.

After doing a full inventory of my collection, I'm pretty sure I picked up some minis at that store's clearance sale that I'm not really going to need.

Were there any blister pack minis in-particular that you were looking for? If they line up with where I'm over-stocked, I could meet up with you and buy/sell/trade, at-cost.

Okay, at 1:3125 / 1:3250 scale, that makes the pods 24-28 meters in diameter, and 132 - 140 metes long.

The tug pods are supposed to be 40 meters in diameter and 200 meters long. I know SVC said freight pods are obviously not tug pods.

At "proper" scale, a tug pod should be 12.3 - 12.8 mm diameter by 61.5 - 64.0 mm long.

When Mongoose decided to scale the pod for the freighters down, it was discussed with them, at-length.

I think their feeling was that a lowly freighter should not be more imposing on the game board than a warship.

I'd have preferred the pods to be in the same scale, but there is a definite point to having the freighters not have too much "oomph" to them.

There's a big difference between making sense and simply making miniatures.

The USS Missouri battleship is 270m long, while cargo ships frequently pass 400m long. Why? Because they don't need major maneuver capability, and make more profit with more cargo space. That economic reality is likely to expand with interstellar commerce.

I'd rather see frieghters look like freighters, and have them dwarf the combat ships.

Yes, I know all of the ships, in space scale, would be smaller than the tips of their flight stands, but if they are going to make them bigger for cool factor, at least make them bigger in the same scale so they can make sense together.
