You know what...I think I'm wrong about the Star Tiger. I pulled that from memory, rather than looking it up. I'm fairly sure it's actually the Star Lion NCC-2164. I'll check on it just to be sure this evening when I get home.

I would imagine that it would rely, at least in part, on the rules used for naming ships of that particular class. The larger Federation carriers are all invariably named after prominent wartime commanders from Earth history, so keeping the name Farragut makes sense (the unusual name is actually the CA, as people aren't generally used as names for that class).

Presumeably there was something similar involved in the name change for the California. US states are a frequent name for the old Light Cruiser-class ships, but to the best of my knowledge never turn up as escorts.

OK.

And checking my copy of CL#27, it was the Star Lion that served on the Romulan Border before the Klingon Invasion.
