After Action Report: Mongol with five stingers vs. D5W

The story of how I stopped calling stingers "stinkers":

Me (the Hydrans) and my Dad (the Klingons) approched each other slowly during the first turn. I launched my stingers and let off five fusion charges, gatlings, and my mongol's phasers for minor damage (my mongol used directed targeting against power, but he got a 2 on the burn through). He hit me with some of his weapons too, and three got through. The next turn he ran away, but I had the same speed and tracked him down to range two, where I fired everything, resulting In severe damage to his ship. He gave up when I used my final 3/4 energy to get three more gatling shots into his down sheild.

I learned two things here: Fusions don't look great because of the cool off rules, but they are almost as powerful as oveloaded distruptors for half as much energy.

Also, even without Twin fusions every turn, stingers are extremely powerful.

Interesting how often it is that a battle only lasts a couple of turns. Sometimes it's all decided very quickly, but obviously sometimes it can also take a while.

How easy did you find it to get the Hydrans in to a useful firing range, Pinecone?

At the same speed as he, with acceleration I found it realativley easy to get into range 2, but I couldn't have gotten closer than that (which is why I Fired there).

I'm surprised he didn't try to avoid that range bracket - hadn't he heard that you don't wanna get too close to a Hydran?

Mind you, at least he'll know next time ;)

Definately a mistake you don't make more than once. In a similar game, my wife allowed me to close to range 1 with a Mongol and 3 Stingers once. Her D7 was pretty trashed after that one, and I don't think she will be getting within range 5 or so of me next time  Gotta keep away from those gatlings and Stingers!

If your wife is not letting you get within range five, it might end up being a pretty lonely marriage...

Indeed, I think he learned his lesson.

Dr. Phil, "Now, Dave... tell us what your wife has done to you that makes feel the need to close to point-blank range and give her an Alpha Strike."

Dave, "Well, Phil.. she left her D7 in an open and defenseless position!:

Dr. Phil, "And the end result of that event was..."

Wife, "I've learned not to allow him to get close to me again, ever!!!"

Dr. Phil, "Now Dave, have you thought about the ramifications of your decision to take advantage of a helpless opponent? And if so, do you think you've learned a valuable lesson here that our viewers might benefit from?"

Dave, "I sure have Phil."

Dr. Phil, "And what would that be?"

Dave, "Always allow your wife to have a 25% advantage in Basic Victory Points, 'cause when they talk about the cold, dark vacuum of space... that ain't nothing compared to the cold, dark vacuum of separate rooms! :) "

Dr. Phil, "Ummmm.... Errrrr... I don't think that's the message at all!"

Wife (being restrained by the ushers), " Why I oughta murderize the bum!"

NOTE: No persons, real or simulated were harmed during the creation of this satire. The persons depicted in this vignette are the creations of the author and any similarities to Dave and his wife are purely co-incidental.
