drones/missiles?

Forgive my ingorance, and a perhaps too brief interenet search, but can anyone provide me with Star Trek references to what the game calls drones/missiles as shipboard weapons? They certainly add a different challenge to the game, but I do not know from where the idea came...

From the official star trek blueprints of the D7, saying it carries drones to deliver nuclear warheads.

There's actually a great deal more info in the Designer's Notes of the
Star Fleet Battles Master Rulebook if your interested in knowing how the main races for the SFU came together. It's a short, but interesting, read.
