I don't see why not. If they look like fighters, and you can tell them apart on the game board then they could do the job.

ADB has official fighter minis coming, but it's taking time to get them mastered.

You could use 1-Euro coins for minis, if you wanted too, and no one can tell you it's wrong.

ADB will come out with fighter minis that look just like the official designs and they'll be mighty cool to have, but you always have the option to do what you want (outside of sanctioned tournaments, etc.). Your gaming table, your minis.

I've seen plenty of people make substitutions.

As long as the game itself is left alone and everything is identifiable, I personally never have a problem with it (I only play using official [playtested] ship cards or the occasional port from SFB, no homebrew Munchkin ships).

My group's Klingon uses a FASA D-22 that I gave him as his mini for D-5W's (after he stuck a third engine on it). It ain't the ADB mini, but he plays with the stock ship card, I can tell what is what, and he enjoys it. No harm there.

Both of the groups I play in use counters for drones and shuttles. When the ADB minis for those show up, I'll upgrade. In the meantime counters work just fine.
