GoAnimate - The SFU Series ?

Dear Friends,

Many of you may be familiar with the free online animation maker GoAnimate, which has an option to make cute Trek TOS-era cartoons. (see http://goanimate.com/channel/startrek).

For you Starfleet JAG types out there, would it be legally problematic to make and post SFU-setting GoAnimate animations ?

Usually we discuss SFU fans possibly violating ST / Paramount intellectual property terms. In this case, curiously, there is perhaps a reverse problem, wherein a ST side activity could potentially violate SFU IP !!!

It's best to not do anything with this until you get a definite answer from a company officer. At the moment, everyone at ADB is getting ready to go to Origins, the most important event of the company year. It's a REALLY busy time for ADB, so don't expect an answer until after the staff have come back and had time to get settled in again.

I do know that SFU stuff CANNOT contain named characters, like Kirk, Spock or the Enterprise herself, and these characters seem to be included in this anime thingie, so that may kill it dead right there.

Gary, unless I am badly mistaken, we cannot go there. Our license is to produce games and gaming materials. That is why our short story collection has a scenario for each story. Unless SVC says otherwise, the answer is that the idea cannot and must not be followed through.

I don't know enough about GoAnimate. If they have their own "license from paramount" then all we'd have to do is give permission to use our stories.
