I have an odd question for the group: What are the dimensions (basic LxWxH) of the Fed CA miniature and the Lyran CA miniature (as accurate as I can get)?

The Fed Ca is 3" x 1 3/8" x 3/4"
The Lyran CA is 2" x 1 1/4" x 3/8"

That's 1:3788 scale, BTW.

Thank-you. Do the lengths include engine nacelles? The 2" on the Lyran seems a bit short from my memory, but it's been a while.

The Lyran is 2" from the font of the catamarans to the rear of the engine nacelles.

The giant robot is correct. Both length measurements include the full length to the end of the nacelles.

My measurements came out a bit different than Scoutdad's, but I'm glad that I'm in the ballpark. Did those get rounded to the closest 1/8"?

I did notice that the metal CA vs the plastic CA vs the new CC do have some small differences, but they're not enough to really say the scale is off or change anything that you would need to make to fit these minis (decals, spacedock, other ships to scale, etc.).

Actually, I rounded ot the nearest 1/16.

Without more specifics... i.e., Metal CA vs. Zocchi CA, or Fed CC, or Zocchi CA with CC saucer; or one-piece Lyran vs. 3-piece Lyran; I assumed a sixteenth would be ballpark enough.

If more precise measurements are necessary, I can check with the digital calipers

That's why I was inquiring.

I used my new digital calipers (such a nice present for myself) and came up with some minor differences between each of the miniatures (though the only one I can really be absolute on is the plastic one since the metal ones have a lot more give to them and can be built different every time).

There's a surprising variance from one-piece Lyran to 3-piece Lyran as well...
And even a bit of variation from 3-piece to another 3-piece. I guess it depends on how you actually assemble them.

The molds creep and shrink too. A current mini will probably be different than one from 10 years ago (even if from the same master). That rubber will always vulcanize a little bit differently when a new mold is made.

I've noticed this in some of the oldest of the oldest Starline minis. If you look very carefully, you can see mold parting lines that date to the original SL2200 lead versions and sometimes two different subsequent parting line arrangements from later re-molds. Those remolds are also where other things are introduced, like the twist in the aft hull on my T-7 tug I just discovered.

There is an excellent site for Star Trek ships (in unified scale) made of LEGOS: Brick Commander

They have a nice Enterprise model here that could easily be modified to make a Fed CA.

As I love Lyran ships, I was thinking about doing a Lyran CA in the same scale. It strikes me that it might be a fun way of attracting attention at Cons as well

I'm actually going to pick up both minis from my FLGS for reference.

A number of people have made breathtaking lego SFU ships and posted them over the years.

I created some LEGO SFU ships a while back using LEGO digital designer.

I tried a Lyran CA, but getting the angles/corners correct in LEGO was very problematic and I never finished.

I had thought about building the Kzinti in real LEGOs but it would have been very expensive based upon my estimates.
I used the same amount of money and was able to purchase about 50 Starline 2400 miniatures instead.
