Well... they're finally done!

Image

I did a very simple paint scheme and skipped the decals this time. Hand painting the flames was actually kind of fun....

My Romulan fleet has three distinguishing characteristics. (1) I finished them. (2) They are perfectly good playing pieces for a game-- not objects d'art. (3) They're MINE!!!!!

The Federation CA was painted by a local gaming buddy and the Tholian battleship is a gift to my son from Scoutdad. Thanks, guys!!

(Map sheet is from a ten dollar copy of Brilliant Lances.)

This is a darker photo, but it's easier to see some of the details:

Well, they look great! Those flames are awesome and the ships are prefect -I mean perfect - for gaming.

How'd he like the battleship?

There's not a Fed Comm card for it yet (although I have lobbied to have it included in a communique... but alas, to no avail.); but it's functionally identical to the SSD in Stellar Shadows journal #2 (which IIRC, was CL#28).

nice job on the Roms, too.

He's ready to spin some webs...! He think it is really cool.

(I predict that there's a Tholian fleet box and a copy of Alien Armada in his future.)

The local game store has lots of Romulan and Klingon ships in their backstock. I want the F5, the Sparrowhawk, and the (what's the little one?) the Seahawk....

Yeah, totally. (I skipped the bird on the bottom, though.)

They are jagged and inconsistent, but from a yard away (ie, gaming distance) they look okay to me.

Now that I have some minis that are *DONE* I might take a little more time next time to do a slicker job. I might even try to freehand the bird on the bottom....

What type of paints are you using?
If you're using water based acrylics, here's a tip for you. Go to your local big-box braft/hobby shop [Jo-Ann, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc) and check out the craft paint section. Look for a product called "Blending Gel". Mix just a bit with the paint on your pallette before painting the birds. This material will slow the drying time and allow you to feathing the different colors into one another to achieve a smooth blend from red to orange to yellow.
