Majestic Twelve Games is thrilled to be able to announce that, after months of planning and testing, the latest version of Starmada: The Universal Game of Starship Combat is scheduled for release in January of 2012.

While in some ways this new edition will be notably different from previous incarnations of the game, at its heart Starmada remains the game you have grown to know and (hopefully) love. As always, the guiding principle is "simple, but not simplistic."

Among the changes to the game system, players will find:

* A more streamlined movement system;
* Three distinct and layered types of starship defenses;
* A reduction in the number of die rolls -- and amount of time -- required to resolve ship-to-ship combat. In some cases, the outcome of an attack can be decided by a single throw of the dice!

On the other hand, much remains unchanged, such as:

* A commitment to balanced game play;
* A core set of rules accessible to beginners yet robust enough to support the needs of experienced gamers;
* The most comprehensive set of starship construction rules in any game currently available!

And of course, Starmada will continue to provide dozens of standalone options and advanced rules from which you may pick and choose to fit your desired level of complexity and create the type of game you want to play.

Faster game play is good! Are you going to rework the Dreadnoughts book as well?

What does this new version mean for those of us considering buying the Star Trek Universe versions of Starmada right now?

graydo -

It's Star Fleet Universe. ADB (and therefore MJXII) are not licensed to use the name of the tv series. They get prickly when fans do, as it could get the property owners riled up about confusion.

Sorry, Star Fleet Universe.

I'd be delighted to get an answer to my question as well when someone knowledgeable gets the chance. Certainly it must have been thought through, the Starmada/SFU material hasn't been out that long, particularly the newest release.

Does this mean the SFU version of Starmada is being abandoned?

I've seen nothing indicating that.

There's a new book being worked on, even as I type this. The only question was to release that book for the old edition, or delay it slightly, to refit it for the new. That certainly implies to me that new editions of the SFA books are in the offing as well.

So should people hold off on buying the current SFU books until there are new editions reflecting the new Starmada rules? Or will updated material be provided to current owners?

New editions of the Star Fleet Armada material will be released, definitely, for sure. When, I don't know.

This is not in any way an official answer: I have not seen any announcement of plans to provide new edition material to owners of previous editions. The existing material isn't "wrong" or unplayable, so I expect that new edition material won't be provided to owners of the current edition.

Just saw a post from Daniel. RL issues have gotten in the way so progress is happening but at a slower pace than expected.
