Agreed.

Both are updated.

The no-cloak gets 4 shuttles while the cloaked version has to make do with 3.

For alternate Eagle designs, I toyed with the idea that the War Eagle was the assault version of a light cruiser, with the R-torp increasing the move cost. Downsizing the torpedo results in this.

The same approach can be used on the Vulture. If the Vulture is the slower assult version of another ship, you can end up with something like this . The Vulture systems fit comfortably inside the Falcon outline, giving us a working heavy cruiser design and an open slot for an alternate DN design (Condor?).

Both ships are shown with the early 10-box engines, which could be upgraded to 12- or 15-box engines later.

Steve,

No engine mounted weapons, please. Without a Klingon influence, the Romulans don't get engine mounted weapons.

For an alternate approach let's upgrade my star eagle to full-cruiser status.

A multitude of errors corrected after inmitial post.

If you're looking at the version with 3 S-torps, you're looking at the current version. The first run at a design had an R-torp and a S-torp.

I just couldn't see 2 R-torps on a CA hull.

Abandoning the R-torp for the cruiser would no doubt cause much harruphing in the Romulan Senate. Perhaps "Royal" versions with 2x R-torps might be possible with shock.

Just out of curiousity, do the warp engines have to go out on the wings on an indigenous design? If the designs are based on the original Eagle, could the impulse engines remain in the original positions on the wing and the warp engines go...somewhere else? (Internal? Gorn-style nacelles? X-Wing hulls?)

What I've assumed is the S is a later plasma so the R and F is all the earlier ships had. I've also assumed the first (stolen) warp designs were not safe to be around due to radiation, therefore no weapon mounts on the nacelles and no warp in the hull.

Impulse stays as it was and is pretty much used instead of APR, until the bigger ships.

Two R's does seem a bit much for cruisers... An R and four F's on a BCH?

D-torps are always fun.

Maybe 1xR 2xF 2xD.

Herb - R and G were what the early ships had, which limits the number of torpedo combinations. Multiple Gs on a SC-3 early ship becomes an issue if an S-torp refit is available. The F-torp didn't show up until Smarba.

(Some of my EY designs use S-torps just to have something between a G and an R. I believe there were discussions elsewhere in the board regarding a type-Y torpedo for early years.)

The ships I'm designing are all second-and-third generations. The first generation stands as is, so there is no need to change them at all. They were obviously planned before Smarba, just waiting for warp-tech. After the 'acquisition', they were built as planned.

The ships in Y168 had plenty of time for planning/re-planning. While a couple do have G's beyond the normal two, only two may be upgraded to S, due to space limitations.

Many of the larger ships have D-racks for fighter defense.

My 2-cents worth:
Actually Romulan's had Plasma-F's as early as Y90. It was Gorns who did not have F-torps until Y168. Early Romulan ships seem to have only 1 torp per ship. By Y168 this idea would have changed and they would have started using multiple torps. When Gorns get F-torps the Romulans would probably add them as well. SVC has ruled that engine mounted weapons are a Klingon idea. This means that F-torps would be have to be added in the body.

First Gen Roms:
Snipe: 1xG
Hawk: 2xG
War Bird: 1xR
Vulture: 2xR

Do note that the Romulans did have fighter-launched Pl-F in the early years, and that while Pl-S launchers are ca. Y168, you can always down-load an R as an S.

If I were picking somewhere for cloaking Romulans to pick up warp from other than the Klingons, I'd have them get it from the Tholians.

The Tholians, of course, wouldn't be doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They'd make the trade because the Romulans have something worthwhile for them. Plasma torpedoes work very well in concert with web. Ducking behind web to rearm torpedoes is even better than having a cloak, and opponents in web are unable to flee.

Tholians would have been desperate for a heavy weapon of any sort if their Y110 raid on the Klingons failed. As the D6, (L)D5, and E4 started coming on line to pressure the Tholians, they might have turned to the Romulans in Y123 with an offer -- full MY technology (tactical warp, phaser-1s, tractors, and transporters) for plasma torpedo technology.

Sure, the new warp technology doesn't play well with the veiling device, but the Romulans can continue development on that, and the devices are still useful on bases in the meantime. The Romulans refit their Old Series ships and start developing a new fleet. At the same time, the Tholians mount plasma-Rs on their bases and plasma-Gs on their destroyers. The Klingons have another reason to curse the fate that brought the Tholians to the galaxy and foiled their plans to conquer the Romulans . . . .
