During the EY period, the Fed YDD served as a very effective, if somewhat unusual, "destroyer". A pocket cruiser in all but name, the design always had its detractors and critics, who advocated a more conventional design based off the also excellent Fed YFF. In Y128 an alternative DD design was commissioned to compete with the refitted and upgraded 'standard' DD. While an effective design, the simple fact that there was a large pool of YDD's that could be cheaply converted, not to mention the fact the 'standard' DD could share parts and components with its CA 'big brother',(the 'standard' DD was usually referred to as 'Heavy' when it was necessary to distinguish between the 2 designs) led to no further ships in the class being built after the initial order, and the few remaining ships in the class were scrapped by Y160.
The MDD was in service from Y128 to Y158. Using 3 warp engines (designed and built by the same company that produced the old WDD and the later Police Corvette) and an enlarged frigate saucer, it served as a useful stablemate to the Frigate during the Middle Years. Later, elements of its design could be seen in the design of the War Destroyer.
Other significant reasons why the class wasn't fully adopted by Star Fleet was the complete inability to upgrade the hull; the enlarged Frigate saucer was at the very limits of Middle Years naval architecture (the saucer was, in fact, not larger, but THICKER....it had about 33% more depth than the regular frigate saucer), while the 'Heavy' Destroyer, using the larger and more adaptable cruiser saucer, could be heavily modified if necessary. The primary reason was that the HDD was simply not that much more expensive to build, and had MUCH more firepower.
Plus, it could fufill the cruiser mission (usually) during peacetime, while the MDD could not.
As with the Fed Modern Light Cruiser, this is a official submission for the Middle Years module, assuming it's ever done.

Since I suck at SSD creation, if some kind soul (Raper? Gray? West?) wants to take a stab at kitbashing the actual design from my rambling, please do so.
Estimated BPV of this thing should peg around 85 or so.
SC 4, MC 0.5, CR 5. Explosion STR 11. Turn Mode B, Breakdown 5-6. 16 Crew, 6 BP's.
Has stronger shields than the FF. Should actually be somewhat BETTER shielded than the regular DD, but not excessively so.
DamCon, sensor, scanner should be very similiar to the FF, with maybe the DamCon track being deeper. Would have 2 more excess damage than the FF (or one less than the HDD, whichever is better).
Weapons: 2xPhoTorp FA, 3xP1 FH, 1xP1 LS, 1xP1 RS.
Power: 3 5-box warp engines, 3 impulse, 2 APR.
Systems: Almost identical to the FF, but should have a few more Hull and Lab. Batteries same as FF. Same with shuttles.

Mike: Fed DD R2.6 and Fed FF R2.25 both have the same EX DAM track: four boxes.

Well, then this ship has 4 excess damage boxes, then...
Toldja I suck at SSD'edge.

Backstory, Second Draft:
During the EY period, the Fed YDD served as a very effective, if somewhat unusual, "destroyer". A pocket cruiser in all but name, the design always had its detractors and critics, who advocated a more conventional design based off the also excellent Fed YFF. In Y128 an alternative DD design (ironically, it was designated as a 'Heavy Frigate' to disguise Star Fleets' true intentions...)was commissioned to compete with the refitted and upgraded 'standard' DD. While an effective design, the simple fact that there was a large pool of YDD's that could be cheaply converted, not to mention the fact the 'standard' DD could share parts and components with its CA 'big brother', led to no further ships in the class being built after the initial order, and the few remaining ships in the class were scrapped by Y160.
The FFH was in service from Y128 to Y158. Using 3 warp engines (designed and built by the same company that produced the old WDD and the later Police Corvette), a (slightly) enlarged Frigate saucer, and a modified Police Corvette secondary hull, it served as a useful stablemate to the Frigate during the Middle Years.
Other significant reasons why the class wasn't fully adopted by Star Fleet (aside from the lack of funding) was the complete inability to upgrade the hull; the enlarged Frigate saucer (and the modified Corvette hull) was at the very limits of Middle Years naval architecture (the saucer was, in fact, not larger, but THICKER....it had about 10% more depth than the regular frigate saucer), while the Destroyer, using the larger and more adaptable cruiser saucer, could be heavily modified if necessary. The primary reason was that the DD was simply not that much more expensive to build, and had MUCH more firepower.
Plus, it could fulfill the cruiser mission (usually) during peacetime, while the FFH could not.
As with the Fed Modern Light Cruiser, this is a official submission for the Middle Years module, assuming it's ever done
