The USS Napoleon (originally CVA) was converted to a SCS about year 190 and destroyed in Y198.

This improved SSCS was ordered as a replacement for the SCS Napoleon, and was the last SC2 SCS built by the Federation.

Changes to the SCS design include:

1. the Flight group assigned was 1 squadron of F-111 fighters, 2 squadrons of A-20 fighters and a single squadron of F-101 Voodoo heavy fighters.

(in terms of F&E the Off COMPOT of the F-111 is '9' (see F&E rule #(527.1), the off COMPOT of the A-20 is '10' (see F&E rule #(532.0)and the COMPOT of the F-101 is based on comments made by SVC in the economy F-111 thread). Thus the total COMPOT of the fighter complement is 9+10+10+8=37)

2. the original SCS design had shuttle boxes for 24 single space fighters (F-14 and F-18C), 6 mech links for F-111s, and 6 shuttle bay boxes for the Admin, MRS and SWAC shuttles assigned.

The SCS design retained the mech links for the F-111 unchanged, added 12 more shuttle boxes (6 to each side bay and replaces the 4x-PH-G 360 degree mounts) and increased the rear shuttle bay by 2 shuttle boxes, give a total of:

areaShuttle Box Avail fighter /shtl type number assigned total SSD boxes used
Bay#1 (portside)18A-20612
Bay#1 (Portside)F-10136
Bay#2 (Starboard)18 A-20612
Bay#2 (Starboard) F-10136
Bay#3 (aft)8SWAC12
Bay#3 (aft)MRS11
Bay#3 (aft)Admin55
Mech Link6F-11166
Total503150

3. the ph-G's are moved (in pairs) to the forward section of the secondary hull just ahead of the shuttle bays, 2 with LS arc, 2 with RS arc.

4. the SSCS used a modified DNG saucer. the Impulse engines were increased to 6 SSD boxes from the 4 found on the SCS thus reflecting the DNG saucer elements).

The BPV of the SCS is very similar to that of the SCS, since they have the identical weapons types, numbers. the SSCS Phaser gatlings loose their 360 degree firing arcs, being replaced by 2xLS and 2RS mounts. the SCS is larger SSD wise by having 12 more fighter shuttle boxes 2 more Impules engine boxes. (the Gatlings were moved to a "new" location and thet added shuttles occupy space once assigned to the original 360 Ph-G's.

The intent of the proposal is to field a "pure" heavy fighter carrier by the Federation in the latter years of the Andromedan War. Since the Federation never fielded PF's, the F-111 and A-20's were assigned.

The particular choice of having 2 A-20 squadrons assigned was to increase the number of photons available...although the increased energy cost of reloading the photons is a serious challenge to the ship, the larger number of direct fire photons is judged to be worth the inconvenience.

By replacing the 1 space F-14's and and F-18C's with 2 space heavy fighters, the ships time to launch and land cycle is reduced (namely the SCS fighter group of 12 F14,12 F-18C, 6 A20 and 6 F-111 (a total 36 shuttles) is larger(in actual numbers of shuttles) than the SSCS fighter group of 6xF-111, 12xA20,6xF101 (a total of 24 shuttles) by the expedient of having fewer shuttles to handle.

The MSC entries and stored drones of the SSCS is the same as the SCS.

YIS date is 200, (reflecting the original order date of Year 198) but the ship could have been built in year 192 or earlier.

Pros:

The ship is intended to hunt and kill Andromedans. with its flight group, it is adequately protected against most Andromedan ships... and with (in F&E terms) a 36 COMPOT added to the ships own weapons, should do well.

This ship, effectively uses the "Federation third way" by holding 4 full squadrons of heavy fighters in a single hull.

Cons: the biggest weapons "punch" of the SSCS is the fighter group, without it the SCS is little more than a single DN's worth of firepower. To fight effectively, the SSCS must use both its own photons, drones and phasers as well as provide support for the fighters.

While the SSCS is intended as a replacement for the lost USS Napoleon(SCS), it is a qualitative improvement and thus would merit a "class" designation.

While it would be nice to consider reusing the name "Napoloeon" (or Even MacArthur!) I wold suggest some other choice to reduce confusion.

Possible names: Ulyses Simpson Grant, (Escort names: Phil Sheridan, William Tecumseh Sherman, George Armstrong Custer).

Grant was the General in command of Union forces that eventually accepted the surrender of Confederate Forces under General Lee at appomatox court house. went on to be elected president of the United States, and served 2 terms as president.

Other possible name: Duke of Wellington (Sir Arthur Wellesley) (a fitting successor to Napoleon! The British Royal Navy have commemorated this individual with (I beleive) a ship named HMS Iron Duke. Escorts might well be the same used by the USS Napoleon in year 198 (if they survived...)
