Official position: we decided long ago that there would be no post-General War development of fighters. No stealth fighters, no F22, no MiG39, no Eurofighter-Hurricane. X-Ships made fighters obsolete. So, nothing more advanced than what is already there.

No Lyran indigenous fighters, no Lyran Gatling, no fighter ESGs, Lyran phaser pods might happen.

A rough thumbnail look says that an AxVL from a drone using empire (Federation, Klingon, Kzinti, including normally non-drone using empires that use drone-armed fighters; Lyran, Lyran Democratic Republic, and Seltorian) has fighter storage equivalent to about 9.5 cargo boxes not shown on the SSD (this assumed an MRS), and of course that might be increased by spending Commander's Option Points for fighter supplies.

A rough thumbnail look says that a plasma empire (Romulan, Gorn, Inter-Stellar Concordium) AxVLs (also assuming an MRS) would use about two cargo boxes less (carries 100 spaces of plasma-Ds as opposed to the 200 spaces of drones), or about 7.5 cargo boxes not shown on the SSD, and of course that might be increased by spending Commander's Option Points for fighter supplies.

A rough thumbnail look says that a non-seeking weapon empire AxVL (Tholian, Hydran, Vudar) also assuming an MRS) would use about 5.5 cargo boxes not shown on the SSD, and of course that might be increased by spending Commander's Option Points for fighter supplies.

The WYN have unique AxVLs, the Orions, Andromedans, Jiindarians, and Nicozians do not use AxVLs, I would have to invest more effort to check the Paravian Raiders, Carnivon Hordes, Borak Star League, and Peladine Republic than seems warranted,

The above is for AxVLs, AxVAs and real carriers have even more storage. So I am not in favor of suddenly converting off SSD storage to more easily destroyed cargo boxes on the SSDs.

Would having a store of "X" number of single use "flashlight-like" arming batteries equal to 3.0 cargo boxes (9.5 - 6.5 = 3.0) for use with Tholian, Hydran, and Vudar fighters work?

By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Saturday, August 03, 2019 - 08:47 pm: Edit

Colonel Strong:

Currently, such a thing would be useless to a Tholian AxV because they can only operate Spider-1 or Spider-3 fighters.

I do not remember the arming costs for Vudar or Jindarian fighters, but if this were allowed, it would apply to them as well.

So, honestly, I at least do not think this is a good idea, as I think it fixes a non-existent problem and completely changes all Hydran Stinger-1 ad Stinger-2 operations. If Hydran AuxVs had this, every Hydran ship with those fighters would have them and no longer have to think about diverting power fighter fusions at all.

1. There are already over 2 dozen auxiliary carrier SSDs. Can't say I want to see any more.

2. Auxiliary carriers (any auxiliary, really) are based on freighters and are not meant to be optimal designs, but a crude substitute when you got nothing better.

3. What ship can't use more power?

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Saturday, August 03, 2019 - 09:26 pm: Edit

Petrick: "In the case of a squadron of F-8s, that means there are 176 drones in the storage and 24 either loaded on two of the fighters (the ready fighters) and or on the fighter ready racks. -- But the total number of drone spaces remains 200. So the drone storage is set and already explained in the rules how it works."

Really? I always took that as being 200 in storage above those on the fighters and those in the ready rack. There isn't a note under Annex 7G stating one way or the other, like there is under Annex 7N, which specially states the storage is in addition to those on the racks and in the ready-reload storage.

Rule (FD2.43) says "In addition, certain ships that operate fighters carry extra drones to equip these fighters; see Annex #7G." I guess I took the IN ADDITION (emphasis) as meaning 7G is the number of extra drones in storage.

Not to be dense, but can you please highlight the exact wording that says the 200 is the grand total drone-spaces the ship may have? Thanks.

In the long run, does it really matter? Unless you're in a campaign where you have to track supplies, has anyone ever seen an SFB battle go on long enough for a carrier to run out of drones?? I have not.

~~~~~~~~~~~
(FD2.443) In the storage facility for the fighters (if the ship is a carrier), see (J4.824)...
(J4.824) Drone storage is specified in (FD2.443).
Does anyone else find this kind of silly??? FD2 says "go see J4", which says "go see FD2". Try that in an Excel spreadsheet and you'll get a circular reference error.
As to an SFB battle going on long enough for a carrier to run out of drones. Yes, I have seen such.
You might also look at the fiction in Captain's Log #9. The "carrier" in question is a battle station operating a squadron of F-8s from Hangar Bay Modules along with an MRS shuttle. Including the type-D drone rack there were 232 spaces of drones, not counting the 24 spaces on the three ships (two Pol+s and an FFG). By the end, they were just about all used up.
By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Monday, August 08, 2011 - 07:12 pm: Edit
Jeff Wile proposed a kit to turn an admin shuttle into an A-5 Attack craft (fighter). In his design study, the A-5 could carry six drones since an admin shuttle could carry six drones in scatter-pack mode. Since there is a pilot and a weapons officer on board, they would be able to fire one drone per turn at a selected target. The problem here is that Jeff invented the manned scatter pack, able to target the drones on specific enemy ships or other items and fire the phaser-3 as well. The only way this could be accepted would be to limit it to two drones and prohibit it from operating from ships.--SVC from Captain's Log #54(?) Supplemental File
By Trent Telenko (Ttelenko) on Friday, March 13, 2009 - 05:51 pm: Edit
Trent Telenko proposed an F-111 modified to carry a larger ADD rack with 12 rounds instead of six. Steve Cole suggested it would be simpler to mount six-round anti-drone racks in the bomb bay (taking the space of two drones) but still limiting the fighter to firing one ADD at a time (no increase in firing rate, just a deeper magazine). This would also allow the ADD pack to be added to other Fed fighters with bomb bays.
