Kzinti New Battlecruiser (NCB)
An outgrowth of the DNW study, the NCB was intended to be the largest practical upgrade of the CM/NCA design. Unlike the DNW, the NCB uses the same ridgeback as the NCA, with two much smaller saddlebags added to the forward hull section. While lacking the extensive phaser suite found on the BCH, the NCB compensates with the addition of more drone racks. The unusual design was more maneuverable than the BCH, but caused a slight disturbance in the warp field, resulting in a higher movement cost and requiring the installation of a fifth warp engine. While fairly successful, the NCB proved too expensive, and only two were built, both conversions of extisting NCAs.
Note that in theory, these changes could be applied to any NCA variant, but in practice it was only considered for carrier variants.
Changes to NCC:
- Add saddlebags to NCC containing the following:
1 F-Hull
2 R-Hull
2 Drone-B
2 Ph-1 (LF+RS, RF+LS, added to the existing forward phaser banks)
1 Transporter
1 Bridge
- Add a fifth 8-box Warp Engine (2 L-Warp, 2 R-Warp, 1 C-Warp engines)
- Shields and tracks are the same as the NCC, except add 1 "6" box to damage control and add 1 excess damage.
Other Data:
- Size Class 3
- Move Cost 1.25
- BPV Approximately 175 (?) (Includes Y175 Refit)
- Turn Mode D
- 24 Boarding Parties
- 48 Crew Units
- YIS 182

Fiddling with the name does not answer the problem.
This is a cruiser with a weight problem not a DN on a diet.
To be any kind of DNL, the design would need to be completely reworked. At that point, it ceases to be what Mike is proposing.

Except in terms of power curve, the NCB is much more of a cruiser than a dreadnought. Exclusive of tracks, the Kzinti DNL has 142 boxes, the BCH has 122 boxes, and the proposed NCB has only 119 boxes. Its shields and tracks are also much more like a cruiser's than a dreadnought's.
So despite the movement cost and warp power, this is clearly a cruiser, not a DNL.

Note that, while my proposal is specifically for a Kzinti ship, the idea could be fairly easily applied to other races. For example, a Federation version could be created by adding (to the NCC) two drone racks, maybe a couple of phasers (or maybe not), some additional hull and other systems, and upgrading the center engine to a 15-box destroyer engine.
