So Barry and I just logged on and opened a game, and it looked fine. But we both were fully updated. Maybe the updated system doesn't work with the non updated system?

My experience is the same as Peter's. It seems only to affect tournament games. However, observing a non-tournament room allows you to see the board, but the list of people in the chat is empty. It is a weird thing to have break, but it is.
Also, it turns out that if you try to join a room that is set to invitations only, you can't join any other rooms after that. I would use the send feedback, but couldn't because it's in the wrong place in the client and the bug kept me from getting to it Just put it in the main room, people will still see it there.

I'm having the same problem as Peter. I haven't had the opportunity to try to get into the room with a person with the new update yet. But I can't view the map in a tournament room...

Also, controlling the size of the board hexes is very difficult. You cannot drag the side bars and it freezes very frequently.
By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Friday, March 25, 2011 - 07:42 am: Edit |
Yeah, on further investigation, it seems like if you have the new update, you can interact with other people who have the new update. However, if you have the new update and someone else doesn't, you can't interact with the people who don't have the new update. And by "interact", I mean "see the board". You can see SSDs and impulse charts and what not (although the interface still looks a bit wonky with weird buttons in weird places). But when I went to observe a game between Goofy and Romwe, I couldn't see their board, and neither of them had updated yet. But when I opened a new game with Barry (who had updated), everything seemed ok (although we didn't actually play any game, we just opened up the map and moved counters around for a minute).
Barry reported the same problems. And now Brook.

Oddly, I created a room with brook with both of us having updated, and it didn't work.
In any event, the latest update supposedly fixes the problem. So probably doesn't matter any more.

No, no. This *is* the latest update. I updated last night, and it all stopped working. Unless there has been a new, new update released in the last 12 hours.

Peter,
Did you update today? I posted and update around 11:30pm EDT without announcing it because it was so late. It got announced on the mailing list this morning and I tested it out with Sheap and GFB. And it worked perfectly fine.
By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Friday, March 25, 2011 - 03:35 pm: Edit |
Oh, ok. So there was a new, new update in the last 12 hours. I'll go try that out :-)
By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Friday, March 25, 2011 - 03:39 pm: Edit |
Yeah, that seems to have fixed it. Thanks!

Paul, I as a third party observer in a game, cannot see any Terrain token on the map.
By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Friday, March 25, 2011 - 09:42 pm: Edit |
Jon,
You mean Terrain game piece or terrain that is on a map overlay?
By Jon Berry (Laz_Longsmith) on Friday, March 25, 2011 - 10:41 pm: Edit |
The game piece, like a Planet.

Paul,
I have updated the latest update.
Definately looks different.
Thing is, I am not able to move the map around using the ball on my mouse anymore.
I have to use the scroll bar on the sides to move the map up or down.
Not a big deal, just thought I would let you know.
Thanks
Cheers
Frank

Paul,
One other thing, what does the " Send Feedback " button do ?
Cheers

Frank,
I have fixed the issue with being able to scroll the window using the mouse wheel. It will be in the next update.
The "Send Feedback" button is for:
1) Sending suggestions
2) Sending in bug reports.

I have a similar problem. Before the updates, in order to make the hexes on the map bigger or smaller I had to hit the hex larger/hex smaller icons at the top left of the screen. My mouse pad could be used to scroll up and down on the screen. Now, when I use my mouse pad and try to scroll, the map becomes larger and smaller very quickly and I can't scroll any more. Is this change permanent? Seemed to be better the other way. I noticed that Princton's post above talks about something similar.

Brook:
I had requested it as a feature to make it more inline with the rest of the PC game playing universe
If you all read the release notes you would notice that you can turn this off via: Board->Board Settings->Zoom->Mouse Wheel Scroll
Edit: I don't mean that to sound harsh either but being a computer guy I hate when folk don't read release notes then gripe about information that you put in them to prevent the exact same griping they griped about ;)

Guys,
I have a fix for this. It will be in the next update. I will release this this week if you can wait. I am hoping to include another feature. That is to break the Event Log stuff into summary and detail. So that things like weapons fired at a ship could be summarized into 5 Phaser-1s and 4 Disruptors fired at Ship A. If you want it now, I can put off the release of that feature.

Gee, a computer guy who plays SFB...sounds like how SFBOL came into being and grew into what we all know and love today.
Serious question: Is there anyone willing to volunteer to help bring me back up to speed in SFBOL (and put up with me having to remember how to play SFB)? It's been MANY years since I've played, but I still think I remember how to power up my drones and launch my phasers! ;-)
Thanx in advance,

I'm on more afternoons/evenings than not and will help. There are quite a few others that will too, so just log on whenever you have time and if you get a game, great.
If you have a full account and not just demo, you can create a non tournament room by yourself and fiddle around, which will at least let you get the hang of the way to move ships around, damage allocation, etc etc.
The only real difference between the tournament and non tournament rooms is that tournament has the ship selector screen and a simplified sequence of play.

Patrick,
Did you ever you the Java-based client? I don't remember the last time you played online.
By Patrick Abram (Fallingbrick) on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 - 09:04 pm: Edit |
I believe I've SEEN the Java based client, but I don't think I've played a game in it.
(grabs cane to swing menacingly in Paul's direction and affects an old codger's voice)
Why, back in my day we used Visual Basic AND WE LIKED IT!
(LOL)
That said, I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing (pun intended) of things. I plan to take things slowly (no, I'm not joining any tournaments for a while!) until I get a feel for things again.
