All I was thinking that if you made the stand pieces with a attachable top. Each set made for each Empire in the SFU. That would be easier to manufacture. Also the stands being all the same would then Tie the sets together.

Of course you would have to start with Klingons vs Federation for the first set. As that would sell to not only us players but others who watch TREK both old and new.

3D printing the tops also allows for each ra..empire to come in both white and black (steel and bronze?). Those wanting to paint their pieces might still be able to buy plastic or aluminum.

I need to find someone with a CNC lathe and see how much a set of stands would cost. Anodized aluminum may be an option as well to keep the price down, as I remember there being some decent bronze options now. (Have to test anodizing an aluminum Shapeways print.)

I'm thinking that is you had heavy metal pucks about the size of a stack of three quarters coins or two or three nickel coins and then made chess piece toppers that said pucks could snap into the base, that would make them stable enough for game play. You'd have to find a good source for said pucks and buy up a fair supply of them ahead of time.

King = Starbase
Queen = DN / C9
Rook = CA / D7
Bishop = CL / D5
Knight = DD / F5

Pawns should be gunboats, fighters are frigates.
The king should be the Battle station are Star base. The Queen should be the DN. Rooks should be the cornerstone of the fleet CA. The Bishops and Knights should be LC,WC,DW,DD depending on how you should feel

Nobody outside the SFB world would know what fighters or gunboats are. They might not know the others (DN/NCL/DD/FF) but should be able to figure them out quickly.

Rooks are castles or towers, so should be a base. A Starbase would be too powerful, but a BS or BTS would be more in line.
