Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Star Fleet Battles: SFB Proposals Board: New Ships: R12: WYN PROPOSALS: WYN BONDED TRADER: Archive through January 01, 2013
By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 10:30 pm: Edit

Just a thought I had awhile ago when building my WYN fleet.

Since most early Wyn ships are either captured or Created from civilian ships, why not use the Free trader as a light aux type ship.

The FT has 2 6 box cargo bays fitting extra power (APR most likely) would boost its power curve or making one bay into a hanger for a light escort carrier would be something I see the early WYN forces doing.

I was even playing around with an Orion built FT scout. Turn one cargo bay to APR, the other into a lab, put a Special sensor into one option mount and a probe into another.

An early border detection ship.

Just an idea.

The Prime Corvette which was published in CL34 basically covers the aux warship version.

The Free Escort Carrier in CL34 and R11 covers the light carrier version.

John Wyszynski:

I think you are in error... (atleast as far as understanding what Reid was suggesting)

Many Wyn Ships have what SVC has termed "factory unauthorized modifications", which limits their range and ability to operate far from the base that it is operating from. (inside the Wyn Cluster, such range is not as serious a drawback as it would be for other "normal" races. The Wyn's have a totally different situation compared to what the Federation or the Klingons face.

the "Nancy", IIRC was one such ship, and there are others.

I suspect what Reid is suggesting is a far more radical refit of the FT than your examples.

By John Wyszynski (Starsabre) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 11:37 pm: Edit

You really need to look at the ships before you make such unsupported statements. The prime corvette is a far more radical refit than was proposed in the first message.

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 10:47 am: Edit

Ok I dont have the software to do SSd's but for what i suggest may or may not be so radical.

1. Increase shields from 12 to 15
2. Use one cargo bay of 6 boxes to install 6 APR boxes.
3. Carrier version has then 4 fighter slots and 2 hull added where the other cargo bay sits.

Now the Orion FT version would be similar
1 Same shield increase
2 6 APR instead of one cargo bay.
3 Scout version would have the other bay, 4 boxes, made into labs the other 2 boxes stay as cargo to carry spare probes. The 2 option mounts woud have a Special sensor in one and a Probe in the other

Both of these ships are well within what the WYN cluster could piece together from what it has lying around.

Yes the prime corvette does cover this type of thing but Thw WYN early on probably couldn't build one, but converting a FT is within their means.

They also are recieving ships from the Orions through the deal for the shipyards, so why not get a few orion FTs with the deal.

I just think its plausible

Sounds like an logical (and in hindsight, obvious) extension of the game. No problemo. Work something up.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 12:25 pm: Edit

I would like to see a shuttle transfer rule to go with that carrier version. Basically this:

Shuttles may only be launched from the original shuttle bay. Shuttles may be transfered from the converted shuttles to the main bay at a rate of one per two impulses. Properly handled this still allows the normal rate of launch but you cannot simply choose to launch shuttles straight from the auxilliary bay.

Perhaps the shuttles of the auxilliary bay could be grayed out and the appropreate rule in its description.

By Mike West (Mjwest) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 01:12 pm: Edit

Why? The auxiliary carrier version of the FT doesn't have this restriction. Why should this one?

Obviously, the cargo bay has a cargo hatch. It shouldn't be that big a deal to make it a shuttle hatch.

Anybody any good at making SSD's?????

Would be cool to have a copy of each one to playtest.

PLEEEEEEEEEASE!

I wonder if such a lightAux wouldn't be a good ship to add to the WYN fleet for Fed Commander?

So far, they seem to be very top-heavy with the fish ships in the discussions for DK - and they would do with a smaller auxiliary ship for pre-fish-ship fights.

Would such a vessel be able to use the Klingon warp units that are being used for the fish ships? Or were they in a limited supply?

By Michael C. Grafton (Mike_Grafton) on Thursday, September 27, 2007 - 09:09 am: Edit

Well, a light aux based on a Prime Traitor would be upgrading 2 6 box engines (IIRC).

So they would logically be replaced with 8 box engines?

And if there is anything that the Klingons would have a good supply of it is old F5 engines.

Oh, yes you do. All you need is to download a few SSD's you like from the web, and start cutting and pasting in MS Paint. You can also download SSDPrint 8.0 from this link:

http://www.smileylich.com/sfb/programs/ssdprint80.html

Takes some practice, but once you get the hang of it you can whip out SSD's in no time.

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Friday, September 28, 2007 - 07:05 pm: Edit

Well Downloading is a problem on my POS dialup connection.

About the Klingon Engines The ones on the fish ships, Fish ships dont come around until year 180+ This ship would be much earlier about Yr 150(give or take a few years). Thats why I proposed turning the Cargo to APR. Neither of these is a real combat vessel they are purely support or patrol duty.

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Sunday, December 09, 2007 - 02:08 pm: Edit

Just bringing this one up again. IMHO the WYN cluster would have as one of its primary concerns border security.

The ability to detect a fleet coming through the radiation zone as early as possible would be paramount to getting the fleet to the right spot for defence. The OFT version of this ship would have an advantage in this role. With a probe launcher to send a probe into the zone they would have slightly better range of detection than with just a sensor.

So lets try this one again.

And as I asked before if ANYONE has the way to make an SSD I would love to have one of each ship.

Is there a GIF or PDF of a Free Trader or variant online anywhere? I'd need that before starting to make an SSD.

By Michael Powers (Mtpowers) on Monday, December 10, 2007 - 07:50 pm: Edit

There are deck plans in one of the CL, I think.

Jim,

Check your email ...

By Jim Davies (Mudfoot) on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 06:20 pm: Edit

No sign of it. Maybe my spamfilter has eaten it.

By Mike West (Mjwest) on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 08:27 pm: Edit

I sent it to the email in your profile ...

It had an unmodified GIF in it, too.

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Saturday, June 13, 2009 - 05:14 pm: Edit

Hmmmmm a year and 1/2 but no replies to an SSD request.

Maybe such Ideas just aren't meant to be.

I do wish to playtest somewhat with this concept.

I guess I'll have to break out the whiteout and the fine point sharpie and do alterations.

By Jim Davies (Mudfoot) on Saturday, June 13, 2009 - 08:14 pm: Edit

If Mike is listening, he can send me that SSD again. A couple of years ago I know I had a bad regex in my spamfilter that was deleting things it shouldn't.

It'll take me a week or two to deal with it, though.

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Saturday, June 13, 2009 - 08:42 pm: Edit

Thank You,

I really want to give this ship a try.

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Thursday, December 27, 2012 - 02:53 pm: Edit

just a re bump of an old idea for a not just bplausable but usefull ship

By Jim Davies (Mudfoot) on Tuesday, January 01, 2013 - 06:16 pm: Edit

And again with the offer to mod an existing Free Trader SSD. I might barely have time to make one from scratch. Gotta build some furniture first. The dining table is covered in Lego.
