PHILOSOPHER KING
STARDATE 11.28.18

Link to previous Philosopher King entries

Captain Glaucon stared at the holographic display. A solid path zig-zagged in and out of cloudy areas, stopping every now and then at different planets before continuing on. Flashing lights indicated various stars which surrounded the pathway. Eventually, the path faded away as it led off the display, indicating that this was only a small portion of a much larger journey. Captain Glaucon shook his head.

Captain Glaucon was an old man, which was evident by his white beard and long white hair. Yet despite the wrinkles on his face, his body was powerful. He wore a white robe which dangled off his body. A symbol was embedded into his robe over his heart, a triangle within a triangle. Giant chest muscles protruded from the white robe, like mountains that refused to be covered by a horde of clouds. His arms were thick, featuring bulging biceps and iron forearms, things so strong they could peel wood from a tree with ease. But most notable were Captain Glaucon's eyes. Always emanating a different color depending on the Captain's mood, they currently displayed a soft yellow glow.

"I don't like it," Captain Glaucon announced after a long silence.

"You never like it," his First Officer answered. Arcadia was a playful faun with a beautiful body. A red vest covered her upper body, one which proudly displayed the same symbol as Captain Glaucon, a triangle within a triangle. Arcadia pranced across the room with glee, clacking her hooves loudly. Hanging from her belt were the pipes she was famous for playing. After performing a sensual dance, she settled into one of various chairs positioned around the room and said, "That's your problem, Captain. You think too much. Why not live life to its fullest, enjoying every single moment that we have?"

"Don't you ever wonder, Arcadia?" Captain Glaucon said, asking himself more than his First Officer. "Why is our mission to return to M31, wherever that is? Why don't any of us remember how we got onboard this ship? Don't you find it strange that we were each living out own lives before we suddenly found ourselves here? And then we noticed we were familiar with the ship's systems without remembering being formally trained on how to operate them? Why are there so many stop offs during our trip back home? Don't you find that odd? The quickest route home is a straight line, but our auto-navigation is taking us on a zig-zag pattern, making frequent stops. That doesn't make any sense!"

Suddenly, three small humanoid robots entered the room. It was Apple, Table, and Fountain. They ignored Captain Glaucon and Arcadia, proceeding to complete different tasks, including cleaning the room.

"And what about all these robots?" Captain Glaucon asked, motioning with his hand toward the three robots. "Why are there so many on the ship? Yes, they tend to our every need, but they couldn't have been constructed for that sole purpose. There must be another reason for their existence. And why is each robot named after a different item in reality? Don't you find that strange at all?"

Arcadia got out of her chair and moved behind Captain Glaucon. She put her hands on his large shoulders and began to massage them. "You have to learn to relax, Captain. All your questions are valid, but they don't all need to answered today, at this very moment. Just relax. All will be revealed in the fullness of time. But in the meantime, you have to live in the moment. Be happy, Captain, and learn to enjoy all the blessings we have right in front of us."

Captain Glaucon turned around and looked down at his First Officer. She stared back at him with her large green eyes. A wide smile extended across her face. Her two small horns sat on her head, giving her a cute appearance. Arcadia began laughing contagiously. Captain Glaucon could not help but to smile and laugh himself.

And just at that moment, a call from the Bridge interrupted the perfect mood they had both finally achieved.

"Captain, Report to the Bridge. Red Alert!"

A seriousness took over Captain Glaucon and Arcadia. Quickly, they rushed to the Bridge and took their seats. On the main viewer were three starships.

"Report!" Captain Glaucon ordered, his gaze locked on the view screen.

"We were intercepted by three starships as we entered this region of space," the Communications Officer answered. "For the last few minutes, I have been sending out friendly greetings on hailing frequencies. No replies at all. Then, just now, they raised shields and armed weapons."

Many small humanoid robots rushed back and forth throughout the Bridge performing miscellaneous tasks.

"Hmmm," Captain Glaucon muttered while stroking his white beard. "We had best turn around. We don't want any trouble if it can be helped. Navigator, take us back..."

Before Captain Glaucon could finish his sentence, the three starships began rushing toward the Philosopher King. Two Drones launched from each starship, resulting in six Drones total closing in. The three starships followed closely behind the Drones, ready to fire their other weapons once they were close enough.

"I see," Captain Glaucon announced confidently. He got out of his chair and stood confidently. "Every living being has the right to self defense, to protect the life he has been given from being taken by evil forces. And this right extends to protect loved ones as well. Let it be known that our actions that follow are based on this right."

"Charge the Forward Panels to Reinforced Levels. Phaser Capacitor to Maximum. Batteries at Full Power. Arm the Tractor-Repulsor Beams. Ready the Displacement Devices."

Captain Glaucon's eyes turned from yellow to red.

"You picked the wrong ship to attack, my friends."

CODEX ICHABORN - DESIGNER'S NOTES
GARGANTUA

Link to Gargantua
Link to the Prometheus Heavy Cruiser SSD

Gargantua is based on the Design Paradigm that, in this Galaxy, Heavy Cruisers are the size of Battleships. However, the task is not as simple as taking a Battleship and dubbing it a Heavy Cruiser. There are various factors that must be taken into consideration.

First of all, it should be noted that, in Gargantua, Heavy Weapon Damage is Doubled, Phaser 4's have replaced Phaser 1's, and Phaser 1's have replaced Phaser 3's. This fact alone makes a battle between a Gargantuan Heavy Cruiser and an Alpha Sector Battleship imbalanced.

Secondly, Shriek Missiles have replaced Drones. While deadly, Shriek Missiles are extremely limited in number. This will force Captains to use the Shriek Missiles sparingly, and only at the perfect moment in a battle when the missiles will tip the balance of power in their favor. Shriek Missiles cannot be launched en masse, with the intention of simply absorbing Phaser Fire. This reinforces the fact that a Gargantuan Heavy Cruiser is not equal to an Alpha Sector Battleship.

Which brings us to a Major Design Issue in Gargantua. The Increased Damage Output indicated above results in battles that are short and sweet. Once a shield is caved in, even a Battleship can be easily ripped apart by the Powerful Weapons and Shriek Missiles of a Gargantuan Heavy Cruiser. This was not my objective. In order to be worth playing, there must always be Maneuver and Tactics on the battlefield. So there needed to be some way to fix this issue.

The Solution I decided to implement was the Juggernaut's Armor and Shields. However, certain modifications needed to be made in order to make it work in Gargantua. Gargantuan Shields were replaced with Armor, which would easily be destroyed by enemy fire. But the key to extending battles and focus on tactics was the Rotating Shield of the Juggernaut. I couldn't simply give Gargantuan Heavy Cruisers a 100 Point Rotating Shield, that would have been too powerful. Instead, I decided to give the first Gargantuan Heavy Cruiser two 20-Point Rotating Shields. These Less Powerful Rotating Shields could be penetrated by enemy attacks, but they would return next turn due to Regeneration. Shield Generator boxes were incorporated into the SSD so that, on the right roll of the DAC, the Rotating Shield would be destroyed permanently. Two more factors made them work. The Smaller Rotating Shields could be Reinforced through Energy Allocation or Battery Power. Both Rotating Shields could also cover the Same Arc, if the Captain so desired. I had found the solution I needed to make combat in Gargantua functional. Other empires in Gargantua would have more or less Rotating Shields, with more or less boxes.

Next, there were some minor issues to tackle. Each Gargantuan Heavy Cruiser needed enough power to move, operate its systems, and arm its weapons. Heavy Weapons were split up into FA and RA to prevent concentration of fire and to force maneuver to occur.

The Battleship Size of the Gargantuan Heavy Cruiser pushed the SSD to its limits in terms of Dimensions. This would mean that future Command Cruisers and Dreadnoughts would be even larger. I will be faced with two options: either reduce the overall size of the starship on the SSD or go from a one-page SSD to a two-page SSD. I am not looking forward to either option.

The First SSD for Gargantua is the Prometheus Heavy Cruiser. This Heavy Cruiser is reminiscent of the Federation, but with the Design Goals laid out for Gargantua. The Second SSD (to be designed) will feature more Shriek Missiles and Titan Bolts. Playtesting will involve running the Prometheus Heavy Cruiser against Itself and flying the Prometheus Heavy Cruiser against the Second Gargantuan Empire.

As Gargantua is a brand New Galaxy, the old rule against sloshing technology does not apply here. Instead, I take whatever building blocks I need in order to make starships that are not only fun to play, but tactically rewarding on the battlefield. R-Sections, Backgrounds, and Timelines are always secondary to me compared to Tabletop Playability.

Should Gargantua be played against the Alpha Sector? NO. Comparing the Design Paradigm for Gargantua to the Design Paradigm for the Alpha Sector, it is obvious they are quite different (and most likely incompatible). Sure, you can fly an Alpha Sector Battleship against a Gargantuan Heavy Cruiser, but I predict the game will be less than enjoyable.

A seasoned SFB Player might quickly glance at the Prometheus Heavy Cruiser SSD and state, "Oh, that's just a Battleship with some Weird Stuff on it." But this couldn't be further from the truth. Each item on the SSD has a purpose and was placed there to support a certain rationale. This undercurrent of logic flows from the Design Paradigm set forth for Gargantua, which is unique unto itself. Ultimately, Gargantua will grow into a galaxy full of empires, a densely populated map, and starships so large, you wouldn't want to come across them in the depths of space.

A personal opinion...

For those of you who may not have visited Norman's Genesis Galaxies site, you're missing out. He is very enthusiastic and VERY creative.

(I very much like some of the designs in "Project-X," particularly the Khan ship, and LOADS of stuff from the "Pangaea" Project.)

Thanks Jeff! I appreciate the kind words. Hopefully you will enjoy all the future stuff I have planned.

Well, between us, Norman, I've been a fan of many artistic designs for a long time, so if someone has a fan design based on "Rocket Ships" from 1930's Serials (like you have), or tributes to the Great Airships/Zeppelins (which, once again, you have), then yeah, I'm gonna enjoy their work.

(HEY FOLKS, THAT'S MEANT AS A HINT ABOUT HIS CREATIVITY!!) :)

Norman,

The Genesisgalaxies.com site just states something cool is coming. Is this no longer the official site?

Thanks.

Hi Ken. As stated several posts above, CodexIchaborn.com is now the official site.

GenesisGalaxies.com, GenesisGalaxies.net, and CelestialFellowshipofGalaxies.com have been "turned off" for now.

However, all pertinent information from those three sites is being compiled into CodexIchaborn.com. In other words, in time, you won't be missing anything from those three sites because all their (relevant) info will be on CodexIchaborn.com anyway.

Hope that helps. Sorry for any confusion about this.

Norman

HYPERION - CAPTAIN'S LOG
STARDATE 04.03.19

Link to previous Hyperion Logs

Captain Gaia sat in her quarters dreaming of the past. Images flowed from her mind creating three dimensional worlds for her to relive. Here, segments of Captain Gaia's past came alive as if yesterday was today. Old friends she laughed with, all the children she had raised, the many wonderful and dangerous places she had been in the universe, all the people she watched die, the fierce battles she fought, her many failures, those special beings she had dared to love. Tears came to Captain Gaia's violet eyes and, for a moment, she longed to return to the place of her origin. Then she remembered why Ichaborn sent her here. The Prometheans would play a pivotal role in the future, but only with her help. A fierce look appeared in Captain Gaia's eyes, like a volcano about to erupt after laying dormant for a thousand years.

A five year mission, Captain Gaia thought to herself. A young and inexperienced crew that needed leadership. It was critical that they grow into the seasoned officers that would make a difference in the future. Captain Gaia smiled. It looks like I have new children to raise. A mother from the beginning to the end.

The intercom buzzed. Captain Gaia pressed a button.

"Sir, we've arrived at the source of the distress call. Raiders again, Sir."

"I'll be right there," Captain Gaia answered. "Go to Red Alert."

Within moments, Captain Gaia entered the bridge of the Hyperion. She was a short, full-bodied woman, with shoulder-length golden hair. Her yellow shirt stood out from all the other uniforms on the bridge. A red triangle flashed continuously due to the Red Alert.

On the view screen, six starships circled a planet, firing at it as often as they could. The Hyperion was still a good distance away. But she was closing fast.

"Did you warn them off?" Captain Gaia asked her Communications Officer.

"I've been transmitting on all open channels," the Communications Officer replied with frustration. "No response."

The Hyperion continued to close on the planet. She was almost within firing range.

"Raiders only understand one language," Captain Gaia said with disgust. "Well, let's speak to them in their own language." A feeling of tension swept over the Bridge Officers.

"Overload the Titan Torpedoes. Ready both Shriek Missiles for launch. Charge Phaser Capacitor to maximum. Raise both Rotating Shields and set them to protect Hyperion's bow."

"Focus fire on one Raider at a time."

"When that ship is blown to bits, move on to the next."

HYPERION - CAPTAIN'S LOG
STARDATE 04.05.19

Link to previous Hyperion Logs

Two overloaded Titan Torpedoes raced toward a damaged Raider. The Raider, roughly the size of a Light Cruiser, already had three shields down, along with internal damage. Time seemed to slow down as the red orbs shined like twin angels of death in the darkness of space. Then suddenly, they slammed into their target, exploding upon impact with blinding brilliance. The Raider shattered into several pieces, before finally blowing up in a fantastic fireball.

"Captain, two more Raiders approaching off our starboard side!"

Two Raiders, each one the size of a Destroyer, flew toward the Hyperion on an attack vector, their phasers firing madly. They were angry, furious over the destruction of their comrade, and sought to avenge their deaths. Hyperion's twin Rotating Shields easily absorbed the damage and would regenerate to full strength in a short period of time.

"Stay calm, Helmsman," Captain Gaia said in a cool voice. In her mind, she noted the tactical position of all the combatants. Hyperion was really in no danger from these adversaries, but Captain Gaia wanted to be sure. This combat was as real to her as if she faced a dozen opponents larger than Hyperion. Yes, she would win, but not by being reckless.

"Now! Fire the Main Phasers!!" Captain Gaia ordered.

Powerful Phaser IV's shot out of the Hyperion, eager to find their targets. The thick red beams of light didn't have to wait long, their enemies were close. The two Raiders shook violently as the Phaser IV's found their mark. Unable to cope with the damage, their shields went down, allowing the deadly energy to ravage their starships. Weapons, Labs, Hull, Batteries, and Warp were lost. Quickly, the two wounded Raiders turned away to escape Hyperion. Hyperion, the size of a Battleship, watched her enemies flee like a pitbull ready to break its chain to follow.

"The other Raiders are retreating!" the Helmsman reported. "Captain, shall we pursue?"

"No," Captain Gaia said, sitting back in her Captain's Chair. "Let them go. We only wanted to drive them off. I'm not out for their blood."

"Yet." Captain Gaia flashed a smile at her First Officer. Mr. Dawnstar stared back at her from his station. Underneath his emotionless face was the impression of a smirk.

Captain Gaia and Mr. Dawnstar watched as the Raiders on the View Screen disappeared into the distance. The doors to the Bridge opened up, allowing the Chief Medical Officer to enter. Quickly, the robot with blonde hair moved to stand next to Captain Gaia and Mr. Dawnstar.

"Welcome Doctor," Mr. Dawnstar said sarcastically. "Pity you missed the excitement. The ordeal is already over." Mr. Dawnstar was one of the Devil People. Two red horns rose out of his jet black hair, contrasting greatly with his light blue eyes. A black goatee hung down on his pale face.

"Why you! You black blooded imp! I came to check if anyone on the Bridge needed medical attention, including the both of you!"

Lady 1979 was flustered. Quick to show her emotions, the robot was easily antagonized by the Science Officer. Captain Gaia watched with amusement for a moment before speaking.

"Mr. Dawnstar, 19, let's just be glad the battle is over. The ship is safe and we suffered no damage. Surely that is something to be thankful for."

Mr. Dawnstar and Lady 1979 stopped verbally sparring with one another. Each one considered what the Captain had just said. There was moment of silence between the trio.

"Captain," the Communications Officer said from across the Bridge. "Transmission from Remdall, Leader of the High Council on Planet Benitron-2. He insists that you beam down to join them in a full banquet to show their appreciation for our actions."

Captain Gaia smiled. "Inform him that we would be pleased to attend. Confirm the time and transporter coordinates with him. Let me know as soon as you have the information."

"Yes Sir," the Communications Officer replied.

Captain Gaia turned back toward Mr. Dawnstar and Lady 1979. "Well, my friends, it appears as though we are beaming down to the surface. Please be on your best behavior."

"Aren't I always?" Lady 1979 said in an excited tone. The robot smiled as she tilted her head slightly to stroke her blonde hair.

Mr. Dawnstar was about to say something, but he held himself back.

"Mr. Dawnstar, are the inhabitants of Benitron-2 of standard life size?" Captain Gaia asked her Science Officer.

"Indeed, Captain, they are," Mr. Dawnstar replied without emotion.

"Very well," Captain Gaia said. "Each of us will have to undergo the Miniaturization Process before we transport down."

"It would be a shame if we frightened Remdall and the High Council with our Gargantuan Size."

HYPERION - CAPTAIN'S LOG
STARDATE 04.06.19

Link to previous Hyperion Logs

Captain Gaia, Mr. Dawnstar, and Lady 1979 sat in large patio area enjoying their lunch with Remdall and the High Council of Benitron-2. Surrounding the location was a small forest with trees full of red, orange, and yellow leaves. In direct view of the eating area were three spectacular waterfalls. Their water seemed to fall slowly, almost hanging in mid-air for a moment, while white mist shimmered with glowing lights. It was a beautiful scene. Above, small birds with four wings soared through the air, enjoying the sunny day, chirping at each other as if they had important business to discuss.

Captain Gaia stared down at her food. On her plate was a strange creature, half octopus, half fish, which was lightly cooked and covered in a green sauce. Apparently, it was some kind of delicacy on Benitron-2. Captain Gaia was just glad it was dead. Well, the Prometheans are supposed to be open to trying new things. After taking a big gulp, Captain Gaia poked a small section of the creature and stuffed it into her mouth. It was delicious!

Mr. Dawnstar sat nearby, calmly eating his food without expression.

Lady 1979 was clearly pleased with her entree. Although she was a robot, she had sophisticated taste sensors built into her mouth. Lady 1979 was also built to ingest food orally through her mouth and then convert the food into energy in her stomach. Eating was one of Lady 1979's favorite activities, as it made her feel alive and just like everyone else. She giggled loudly as she consumed a white and red pudding side dish.

"Remdall," Captain Gaia said as she continued to eat her seafood dish. "What is it that the Raiders were so interested in on Benitron-2? Our sensors didn't detect any rare or specialized resources on your world."

Remdall wiped his mouth with a napkin before answering. He was a middle-aged man who carried himself proudly. It was not the black hair on his head that stood out, but the strange pattern of tattoos on his face that all Benitron-2 people displayed. The official garb for the High Council was brilliant, a long robe composed of orange and black colors. While Benitron-2 possessed small crafts that could reach warp speed, they were a peaceful people who cared nothing for exploring the galaxy or making war with anyone.

"They discovered we are the caretakers of the Dimensional Gate, Captain Gaia. The Dimensional Gate is an ancient artifact that has existed on Benitron-2 since before our people settled this planet. It can transport a person to any time, past or future, and across any distance. However, its use has not been fully mastered. Currently, our best scientists cannot control exactly where a person will end up, although they can program some generalities into the Dimensional Gate. As you can see, Captain, the Dimensional Gate is a powerful device which must never fall into the wrong hands. It is a treasure which we guard more than anything else. And we keep its location secret, so that even if Benitron-2 were overwhelmed by invaders, they would never find it."

Captain Gaia quickly finished a bite of her seafood dish so that she could respond.

"I see. I will include this information in my report to my superiors. Remdall, might I suggest that the Prometheans be allowed to regularly patrol this area. Our starships can protect your world against future raiders. And the Prometheans can even establish a base on Benitron-2 where our troops can assist you in protecting the Dimensional Gate. Let us work together, as allies, pooling our resources, so that our mutual goals can be achieved."

"That sounds most generous," Remdall answered as many of the High Council at the lunch table nodded their heads. "I will discuss your offer with the High Council and we shall let you know what we decide."

At that moment, three female servants entered the eating area, bring refreshments and dessert. After seeing to everyone's needs, they checked with Remdall to see if there was anything else. Remdall thanked each of them and then dismissed them.

It was at that moment that Captain Gaia noticed that everyone on the High Council was male.

"Remdall," Captain Gaia asked with slight hesitation. "I couldn't help but to notice your women. Your High Council is composed completely of men. Are women on Benitron-2 not allowed positions of authority?"

Remdall answered Captain Gaia with stern confidence. "No, Captain, they are not. You see, long, long ago, the women of Benitron-2 insisted on the right to vote. They were given this right. They insisted on the right to work. This right was also given. But as they rose in power and influence, their quest for equality turned into something else. The women of Benitron-2 insisted that they were not only equal to the men of Benitron-2, but that they were better. They concluded that only women should be ruling and that all men were to be turned into slaves. A civil war ensued. It was terrible, Captain. Many lives were lost. But, in the end, the men of Benitron-2 were victorious. Countless women had been slaughtered. What women remained were put into subservient roles in society, never again allowed to advance. As the generations wore on, the war for equality was forgotten, and everyone accepted their place in society. So it is today."

"But don't you see how wrong that is?!" Lady 1979 blurted out furiously. The robot's face was red with anger. "The women of Benitron-2 have every right to the opportunities that you do. You can't force them to be slaves, no matter what happened in your past! How dare you.."

Captain Gaia quickly cut off Lady 1979. Remdall had a defensive look on his face. "What my Chief Medical Officer means to say, Remdall, is that it is not our place to judge your society. Promethean Command knows that every alien civilization will be different, with different values, laws, cultures, and customs than that of ours. But we accept that. In no way would we seek to force our ways onto your ways."

Captain Gaia flashed an angry look toward Lady 1979 who wanted to say more, but wisely did not.

"Men and women are biologically different, built for different purposes by nature," Mr. Dawnstar commented. "While each society decides how much freedom will be given to its various sexes, it is my personal belief that a woman has just as much potential as a man to flourish and succeed in life."

"I am a clear example," Captain Gaia added, carefully making sure the conversation did not antagonize Remdall further. "And so is Lady 1979. As you can see, the Prometheans handle their women quite differently and we have benefited from this decision. All across our starships and worlds, women serve in many capacities, from leadership to teaching to medicine to engineering and more. But women are never considered to be men's betters. Perhaps this kind of thinking is what is different from the women of your past."

Remdall considered Captain Gaia's words and nodded. "You are right, Captain. This conversation has been most illuminating. We have had visitors comment on this subject before, so don't worry about offending us in any way. Now, if you are finished with your dessert, let us proceed to the Grand Concert Hall, where our musicians and dancers have prepared a fantastic musical in your honor. Again, the High Council and people of Benitron-2 thank you for dealing with the raiders."

As the landing party and the High Council made their way toward the Grand Concert Hall, Lady 1979 walked beside Mr. Dawnstar in order to talk to him.

"You don't really believe that the women of Benitron-2 shouldn't have more rights, do you?!" Lady 1979 asked in a low but angry voice.

"Of course not, Lady 1979," Mr. Dawnstar replied quietly. "But it is not our place to force change upon their society. Imagine what it would be like if the Prometheans had forced the many worlds they encountered to confirm to be exactly like them. No, each world must be free to develop as they see fit. It is in this variety that there is true beauty."

"It is not enough to seek out new civilizations ... we must also accept them."

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 05.17.19

Link to previous Black Wolf Journals

Captain Talbot Lupinus stared into the darkness from his comfortable upright position on his bed. The black stared right back at him. Undeterred, Captain Lupinus continued his unbroken gaze. He was searching, searching for the presence that has been visiting him. That unearthly thing who first came to Talbot in his dreams, and then, to his unbelievable astonishment, to his physical bed chamber.

It has been one year since the White Wolf disappeared without a trace, Captain Lupinus thought to himself. Commonwealth Command has chosen me to command the ship that would be its successor. I have assembled the best crew possible, one that I believe can achieve the impossible if they work together as one. To protect them, a brand new Wolf Pack has been brought on board, led by a fierce warrior who laughs at Death itself. We have state of the art equipment, experimental technology installed, and a Research and Development Department that can install new updates in real time. Not wanting to accept the ship name of the White Wolf II, I chose something distinct, something opposite, to show that we would not be following in the same footsteps, but would instead be blazing our own unique path through space. The Black Wolf was born.

The Cyclopeans were the ones who discovered the ancient network of wormholes known as the Maze of Stars. Although Commonwealth Command has their best scientists researching the Maze, there is only so much they can do from their laboratories. Part of our mission will be to explore and chart the Maze of Stars, as well as to assess its potential threat to the Commonwealth. Ancient writings describe a time long ago when the Maze of Stars was used to explore the farthest parts of our galaxy, regions of space that would take us years and years to reach at standard warp.

Talbot suddenly felt a presence watching him. The black hair on his chest and neck rose up on end. He was here. Two blood red eyes fixated on Captain Lupinus from the darkness of his room.

"Have you done as I have asked?" the disembodied shape said in an eerie tone.

"Yes," Captain Lupinus replied with fierceness. "The Black Wolf is about to embark on its journey."

"Then you believe in the visions that I have shown you?" the ghostly apparition asked, a pale white face now surrounding the two red orbs that were its eyes. "You believe that you and your crew can prevent these events from occurring in the future?"

"Yes!" Talbot hissed reluctantly. "Although my soul will be forever cursed for doing so. What you have shown me is too fantastic for any rational mind to believe. The images that haunt my dreams are unbearable. Yet if there is even the slightest chance that I can stop this future from becoming a reality, then I must pursue it. May All of Creation be cursed, I have to!!"

A smile slowly formed on the ghost's face.

"But know this, Ichaborn!" Talbot screamed as fangs grew in his mouth and claws formed on his hands. "I am nobody's puppet! I am Captain of the Black Wolf and I will make my own way. Not yours! I put the lives of my crew in peril in order to save the Commonwealth and to stop your bleak future from happening. We are not pawns in your game! Do you understand?! I am warning you now. If I find that you have sent us on some Fool's Errand to satisfy your own sick whims, then Ghost or Not, I will find you..."

"And Rip Out Your Heart."

THE PRIMORDIAL OCTANT
Link to the Primordial Octant

The Primordial Octant will draw on material from the Alpha Sector, the Omega Sector, the LMC, and Triangulum. The goal is to show new empires in their infancy, after sublight movement, but not quite at early years level. From this Primordial Soup will come the potential for strong and lasting GW-type empires to emerge.

Making sure that there are relevant tactics for each empire to use is of highest concern. With these low-tech empires, there is a good chance that games will be slow and boring. Primordial empires should always have elements of basic tactics in their play, and, if I am successful, advanced tactics at a higher level as well.

Balance is another concern for the Primordial Octant. With a wide variety of phasers drawn from several different sources, it will be difficult to balance one empire versus another. Heavy weapons will also differ from one another, making balance even more difficult to achieve. Still, it is possible to design the ships with balance in mind, and then to modify each ship appropriately after thorough playtesting.

The Primordial Octant will be primarily about exploration. There will be few set borders, no neutral zones, some alliances, and some wars. But for the most part, these young empires are still exploring their vast region of space for the first time.

Early years technology is going to be like X-technology to the Primordial Octant. This will be the highest level of technology reached at the end of the Primordial Octant Timeline. While it is assumed that these empires will achieve general war level technology later in time, this will never actually be shown.

Norman, you know I love your "Project 'X'" and I don't want to sound like a jerk when I say this, but the blurb you wrote on Primordial Octant makes it sound (to me) like a recreation of something you've already done a good start on, but stopped way too soon.

The swarms of AVG fighters are great, but what about other armed shuttles for the AVG? Maybe even bombers...

Khan raiders (I can't remember exactly what they're called, off the top of my head) are wonderful, light, mobile, deadly snipers, but do the Khans have anything else?

There's also the one race that makes use of the classic, 1930's retro design "Rocket Ships." Any possibility of them having other ships?

(Between us, were it not for their lack of shields and, perhaps, the worst mobility in the game, the sheer aesthetics of those rocket ships make them one that I REALLY like)

Hi Jeff. Thanks for voicing your concerns and taking the time to post. I appreciate the thoughts.

Right now, you don't have the whole picture for the Primordial Octant or Project-X. That is partly my fault. For that, i apologize.

Hopefully the following points will help to clarify things:

1) Much more details about Project-X will be posted soon. This has never been described, although many SSD's have been posted for Project-X.

2) Project-X (and many other galaxies) has not been "stopped", but merely sits on hold until I come back around to working on it again. Each galaxy is a seed planted that is waiting for water to grow.

3) Once the first SSD for the Primordial Octant is posted, you will see the difference between the Primordial Octant and Project-X. There is a clear difference. I would not duplicate the two, although there may inadvertently be similarities.

4) The AVG are the first to take shuttles and use them as "fighters." There will be some variants. But what's important here is the introduction of a concept to a particular time period. This will be more clear once the details about Project-X are released.

5) Yes, the Khan have much, much more. They are similar to the Andromedans for the First Cruisers of Project-X. So expect a whole bunch of SSD's for them in the future.

6) Yes, the Homeguard will have a full roster of ships and more. Again, their importance is actually more of the concept introduced during this time period. I could have made a whole galaxy out of this concept (the old Retro Galaxy from GenesisGalaxies.Com), but chose to move them to Project-X where they actually fit quite nicely (with the Republic closely watching over them).

7) As for your last comment, didn't you see the SSD about the X6 Shieldless Battleship-Juggernaut-Planetkiller Homeguard Rocketship with AA Turn Mode? :)

Norman,

1) I am VERY much looking forward to new material for Project-X, Primordial, and so much else you've come up with. You're creative, and I thoroughly enjoy things I've not thought of.

2) I apologize for confusion on my part. As someone who's often visited your site, many of the SSDs seem like old friends, but it's been a while since I've seen anything jump out to me as "New."

3) Another apology; much like Project-X is different from the project where you have small, almost gunboat sized ships (but DON'T use Section "K" rules :)) that all seem to include micro-thin Neutronium armor, I should have expected the Primordial Octant to be very different.

4)

5) Excellent; they NEED some sort of forward facility to, if nothing else, enable them to relocate their movable armor segments (one of SO MANY creative ideas of yours that I like!!)

6) Just because of the Homeguard ship aesthetics, I've tried (and failed) to come up with ships of similar appearance to serve as foils for Sigvirion; it's a "Rocket Ship versus Flying Saucer" thing for me...

... Which brings me to

7) BOY does THAT thing sound a lot like so many of my MunchkinShips from early Commander's Edition... :)

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 05.20.19

Link to previous Black Wolf Journals

Ichaborn floated down the corridors of the Black Wolf. There was no planning, no destination, no meaning to his exploration. Perhaps he was looking for something from the past in this new ship, something from his time. And so, like a ghost doomed to haunt a graveyard, Ichaborn wandered aimlessly, trapped in this existence until he found the thing he didn't know he was looking for.

Those crewmen who were unlucky enough to cross his path felt a chill go down their spine. Some felt their arms or legs go cold, like an unprotected limb in the dead of winter. But none could see him, although they could always feel his tormented presence nearby. Those sensitive few who gave in to their fears quickly stopped what they were doing and ran in the opposite direction, fleeing for their lives. Ichaborn cared not. The living were free to react to him as they wished; it did nothing to free him from his netherworld bonds.

These poor souls, Ichaborn thought. Here they are, young and brave, about to launch on an exciting adventure, ready to conquer Death itself. If they only knew what was in store for them, what fiendish traps the Final Enemy had set for them. Yes, there would be victories, happiness so sweet one could lose themselves in it for all of Eternity. Laughing, camaraderie, assistance, teamwork, learning, growing...all of these would be theirs in the fullness of time. But Life is never so kind. There would also be death, sorrow, weeping, pain, loss, and suffering. Yes, despite their courageous nature, these individuals would be brought low, their souls tortured, maimed, and bloodied. Over half this crew would not return...so many...so many.

And what of their brave Captain? Will his strength, willpower, and intelligence be enough to save them? Talbot believes that his Bestial Nature will be enough to overcome any obstacle. The Fool! That's exactly what the Final Enemy wants him to think. No, Captain Lupinus, your Dark Side won't be your torch through the black forest. Instead, it will be the dagger in your back, the vulnerability the Final Enemy needs to exploit and destroy you. Yes, mighty Captain of the Black Wolf. You will be part of the half that does not return.

And then Ichaborn saw her. She had her back turned to him, but he could recognize that hair anywhere. Long, flowing orange hair, littered with red streaks, like leaves on a tree transitioning to Fall. Memories flooded Ichaborn's mind, of their time at Commonwealth Academy, when they were falling in love for the first time. They sat underneath a giant tree, eating their lunch, and Ichaborn was so scared...so scared. His hand trembled being so close to her and his gaze could not meet her beautiful eyes. Yet she understood him, and treated him gently, like a mother with a newborn child. She saw Ichaborn's potential, something he himself didn't even realize at the time. The two talked for hours, inseparable, and even when they were apart their thoughts dwelled on one another. Quickly, Ichaborn raced down the corridor of the Black Wolf toward his one true love. He reached out with his pale bony hand toward his only salvation.

The crewman sensed a presence behind her and spun around to face the source. Ichaborn stared into her eyes. His heart cracked, as much as the heart of an undead apparition could crack. Black blood flowed out, drowning Ichaborn in order to wash away any hope he had of happiness. His blood red eyes, bulged, unblinking, like the stare of helpless prey right before they are eaten by a hungry lion. This was not Melia. His sweet Doctor Melia who had been taken from him, for whom his soul longed to be reunited with. This was a crewman who he did not recognize, someone who simply wore her hair in a similar manner to his lost love.

Tears of blood flowed down Ichaborn's white cheeks. For some reason, he could hear the Final Enemy laughing, although he was nowhere to be seen. Ichaborn, unable to contain the fury and sorrow building up inside of him, howled at the Stars, a pierce, unforgiving scream that would not be denied a response. The crewman heard the howl, although she could not see Ichaborn, and ran in the opposite direction to save her life.

why? ...

Why?!? ...

WHY?!?!?!??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Stars listened intently...but did not answer back.

Thanks Garth. I'm glad you enjoyed it. While I appreciate the compliment, don't underestimate your own writing ability. You're an accomplished writer in your own sense.

Thanks, Norm, but whereas I can tell stories well enough, you paint pictures with words. As hard as I try, I don't have near as much color in the descriptive prose.

THE SHADOW DIMENSION
Link to Shadow Dimension

The Shadow Dimension is a galaxy that evolved much like the Shadow Dimension referenced in the Dimensional Phase Device. Here, there are strange and eerie empires similar to the Souldra. The Shadow Dimension must be playable for Star Fleet Battles, yet also must provide new tactics and strategies for the player.

The exact Design Paradigm for the Shadow Dimension hasn't been fully worked out yet, but I have some ideas in mind. Most importantly, the Shadow Dimension Design Paradigm will be based on the answers to the following questions:

1) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension need to drain the life from living beings?

2) Can the empires of the Shadow Dimension survive near a Black Sun or Pockets of Dark Matter?

3) Do the empires have a Dimensional Phase Device to travel to "Real Space?" If yes, then what is their motivation for doing so?

4) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension hate the Loriyill (or empires similar to them)? If yes, why?

5) Are the empires of the Shadow Dimension aggressive and warlike? Or peaceful and benign?

6) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension use Dark Matter Pulsars for Phasers? Or some variation?

7) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension use Dark Matter Torpedoes for Plasmas? Or something else?

8) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension use some form of Dark Matter Drones?

9) If Dark Matter Drones are used, then what types of Defenses are there against these weapons?

10) Is Dark Warp used by all empires in the Shadow Dimension? If no, then what is used?

11) Are all the ships of the Shadow Dimension crystalline (i.e. grown, conduits) in nature? Or something else?

12) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension use Shards for Fighters? If no, what do they use? Do they use Fighters at all?

13) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension use Soul Shields? Do they use Standard Shields? Or something else?

14) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension use Crew Units, Boarding Parties, or Pilots?

15) Are the races of the Shadow Dimension pure energy? Or something else?

16) Do the empires of the Shadow Dimension use Dark Matter Bombs as standard Transporter Bombs?

17) How do the empires of the Shadow Dimension interact with one another?

18) What does the Map of the Shadow Dimension look like?

19) Is there some kind of Invading Force that threatens the Shadow Dimension during its Timeline? Are there Multiple Threats?

20) What Resources are there in the Shadow Dimension? Are there Planets? Starbases? Base Stations?
