Hey Paul!

Sorry, but we also need:

1.03 DragoAstro WAX The_Geek RKR

to be changed to:

1.03 DragoAstro WAX Madman RKR

And then advanced into R2 with Madman having won.

Thanks, a sorry for the hassle!

I'm supposed to play Carrol for round 2 of the Masters 2018 tournament.

I can't find any info when I look up his user name. Do you have his contact info?

2.2 Madman WAX Carrol FED

I confess to having no knowledge surrounding this question but it often crosses my mind. It seems to me that the client is written using some sort of older coding language. I only say that because the user interface seems a little dated looking. The client resolution on my fairly new laptop screen also seems a little fuzzy to look at. I am not complaining because I am forever grateful that we have the game online to play at all. I don't care what it looks like so long as it works. My question is whether or not there is a possibility the client will no longer work in the near future as other technologies evolve forward and if the client technology does not? Thanks

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Thursday, December 20, 2018 - 08:11 pm: Edit

Del,
The client was developed in Java. Currently, Java will be supported into the near future. The fuzziness you see is most probably due to the bitmaps of the counters. They were created many years ago. Before we had HD or 4K displays and since none of the counters are vector-based when the blow up the counter it gets blocky.

Things have changed a lot in the last 10-15 years. Today there are several different ways of doing something like SFBOL through existing editors. Things, especially things as simple as SFBOL, don't need to be done from scratch anymore. You don't need to re-invent the wheel for each new game you make in 2018.

If any extensive work were going to be done on SFBOL it would probably actually be less work to redo it through a modern game editor, or even Unity. It would probably be a lot less work, because these modern editors are so efficient and something like SFBOL is so simple, and you'd wind up with a MUCH better version of SFBOL then trying to update the ancient existing version.

Marc,
I have done a little playing around with Unity. Got a counter to run around the board. Would need to figure out how to match the board location with the hex location. The tough part will be the custom UI (i.e. not the board, the SSDs, the damage allocation functionality) and communication (playing against another person, there is no AI available for SFB). Also, the amount of work to put in will be pretty high. I can do it. It will just take a couple years of development in my spare time. (Note: SFB Online is not my full time gig.)

what? not a full time gig. Is ok knew that,,, I am just so glad i found SFBOL so i have peopel to play against

Greetings Paul Franz,
I used to listen to the pod cast (recorded, or live sometimes), I do not have Chrome (google), is there some other way to get the pod cast?

By Russ Simkins (Madcowak) on Thursday, January 31, 2019 - 10:54 pm: Edit

Only need Chrome to participate in the live chat (it's a Talkshoe thing, nothing Paul had any say in). You can listen to recorded podcasts with most browsers including Firefox.
Alternatively, Paul has also been recording the shows lately on Youtube which is awesome for topics like Shapeways ships since you can see what Paul is looking at while he comments. Just search youtube for SFU Oncall.

btw, tonights show included a surprise visit by SVC (thank you for that SVC).

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Thursday, January 31, 2019 - 11:13 pm: Edit

Also, I post a link to the Youtube Live Stream every week in the General Discussion topic.

Also, you can get the podcast multiple ways after the fact. Like going to SFU On Call

Thank you, I will try again.

What would I need to dig out of storage to play SFBOL? I haven't really played since the early 1990's and would love to start playing again. The barrier is my old stuff and not knowing what I need here in real life to play well. I realize EA and things are on the program in primitive ways, but I'd rather be tracking it all offline like most of you probably do.

So do I just need what I would need to use tournament ships, or are you all using non-TC (everything but TCs) most of the time?

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Sunday, February 03, 2019 - 06:28 pm: Edit

Marc,
I would recommend using tournament ships that should be the best way to play. It uses limited ships & rules and most people are happy to play them.

By Marc Michalik (Kavik_Kang) on Sunday, February 03, 2019 - 09:09 pm: Edit

Thanks, I'll just assemble what I need to just use TCs, that is a lot easier than being ready for anything someone might want to use.

Greetings Paul Franz,

I am having problems at present on the SFBOL.
One room that is up presently (a multi player room) every time I enter that particular room my connection is dropped.
I have no connection problems with all other rooms and the general bullpen.

I have not had this problem before (with multi player rooms), it would seem to be only my connection that is being effected.

By wayne douglas power (Wayne) on Saturday, April 13, 2019 - 11:53 pm: Edit

Paul,
The multi game room in question does not appear on the SFBOL windows list. (The user/Rooms, Network Log, #SFB_Bullpen, and other game rooms that are set up are on the windows list, just not this particular multi game room)

Paul,

Apologies, I probably should of sent the above posts (Saturday, April 13) to the SFB online client, bug report.
