CODEX ICHABORN
DESIGNER'S NOTES
FLASH HOWITZER
ANURAN POLLIWARCHY

Link to the Anuran Bullfrog Heavy Cruiser Version 1.0

I designed the Flash Howitzer for the Anuran Polliwarchy back in 2015. While the base design was sound, the Flash Howitzer needs to be updated to make it even more functional than it already was. Keep in mind that the original Flash Howitzer was supposed to be an enormous (hence the name Howitzer) powerful weapon which was few in number.

The Flash Howitzer has four firing modes: Fastload, Standard, Overload, and Double Overload. Because the Flash Howitzer was designed for the Alpha Sector Paradigm, it uses the 1:2 Energy Rule. Fastload costs 3 Energy to arm (1 turn) and does 6 Damage (in 1 impulse). Standard costs 6 Energy (2 turns) and does 12 Damage (over 2 impulses). Overload costs 12 Energy (2 turns) and does 24 Damage (over 4 impulses). Double Overload costs 18 Energy (3 turns) and does 36 Damage (over 6 impulses). Double Overload requires one turn to cool down after firing.

Other elements of the Flash Howitzer include a 50% (1-3) chance to hit regardless of the range and 4 damage points on the DAC to destroy (due to the weapon's gigantic size).

There are several problems with this base design. They are:

1) The Double Overload causes too much damage for a direct fire weapon, even if it is a 3-turn arming weapon.
2) Requiring 4 damage points to destroy on the DAC is too much.
3) The 50% To-Hit chance regardless of range, while intriguing, is not practical.
4) Smaller ship types, like Frigates and Destroyers, will have difficulty carrying this large weapon (i.e. it causes too much damage).

So how do we solve these problems? Taken individually, here are the solutions I plan to implement:

1) Fastload costs 3 Energy to arm (1 turn) and does 6 Damage (in 1 impulse). Standard costs 6 Energy (2 turns) and does 12 Damage (over 2 impulses). Overload costs 9 Energy (2 turns) and does 18 Damage (over 3 impulses). Double Overload costs 12 Energy (3 turns) and does 24 Damage (over 4 impulses). Double Overload requires one turn to cool down after firing.

Here you will notice that the Arming Cost and the Damage Caused is more in line with the Photon Torpedo, which should always be compared against as a baseline for Alpha Sector Paradigm Weapons. A fully Overloaded Photon requires 8 Energy (2 turns) and causes 16 Damage. An Overloaded Flash Howitzer requires 9 Energy (2 turns) and does 18 Damage (slightly more, but spread out over 3 impulses). So the Energy and Damage for the Flash Howitzer are now consistent with the Photon Torpedo.

What makes the Flash Howitzer different is the Double Overload feature. This makes the weapon even more powerful than the Photon Torpedo, but extends the Arming Time to 3 turns instead of just 2 turns. Double Overload also requires a turn of cool down, so it does not fire nearly as often as a Photon Torpedo. This aspect of the Flash Howitzer helps to reinforce the fact that this is an enormous powerful weapon which dwarfs standard heavy weapons.

2) Light Flash Howitzers will require 1 damage point on the DAC. Medium Flash Howitzers will require 2 damage points on the DAC. Heavy Flash Howitzers will require 3 damage points on the DAC. This makes the Flash Howitzer more reasonable in terms of what it takes to be destroyed, while still making it a tough and sturdy weapon.

3) The To-Hit Ratios need to start large and then dwindle away at longer ranges. 50% can still be the main percentage at medium ranges. But at close range, the Flash Howitzer will hit on a 1-4 or even a 1-5. At long range, it will hit on a 1-2 or even a 1. The trick here is to not exactly duplicate the To-Hit numbers for the Photon Torpedo, but rather to make the Flash Howitzer's To-Hit Ratios comparable.

4) The solution for the smaller ships is to create different sizes of the Flash Howitzer (as hinted at in #2). Light Flash Howitzers will only be capable of firing in Fastload and Standard Modes. Medium Flash Howitzers will be able to fire in Fastload, Standard, and Overload Modes. Heavy Flash Howitzers will be able to fire in Fastload, Standard, Overload, and Double Overload Modes.

Frigates and Destroyers will carry the Light Flash Howitzer. Only Dreadnoughts and Battleships will carry the Heavy Flash Howitzers. Everything in-between will carry the Medium Flash Howitzer.

These solutions, once implemented, should make the Flash Howitzer more playable. The Anuran Polliwarchy are Humanoid Frogs. Their ships also include PH-1's, Gatling Phasers (a nice close-range complement to the long range Flash Howitzer), and Plenty of Shuttles. The Anurans (once revised) will eventually be placed in Neo Alpha.

By Stewart Frazier (Frazikar2) on Saturday, June 29, 2019 - 06:51 pm: Edit

Anther aspect would be to limit the Flash to its current size (ie once damage is taken, it can only fire again in a smaller size), a heavy with one damage can only fire as a medium, or a heavy with two damage (or a medium with one damage) can fire only as a light. [Optionally, this could be enforced during the turn as well.]

By Norman Dizon (Normandizon) on Saturday, June 29, 2019 - 07:12 pm: Edit

Excellent suggestion, Stew! This is a great way to reduce the effectiveness of the Flash Howitzer as it absorbs damage. I think making it happen during the turn would be best and it will increase excitement as damage is scored by the opponent.

I'll be sure to implement this in the Flash Howitzer revision. I'll also reference your name for credit as well.

Thanks again!

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 06.30.19

Link to previous Black Wolf Journals

The Black Wolf dropped out of warp within sight of Epsilon-SPP. Epsilon-SPP was a densely populated M-class planet that bordered on Grex space. Its inhabitants were peaceful with no weapons of their own to defend themselves. Now, the whole planet was in danger of being destroyed.

A strange planetoid emerged from the Triangle whose trajectory takes it directly to Epsilon-SPP. At first, Commonwealth scientists thought this was coincidental. But when a Commonwealth Destroyer, the Herald, was sent to gather more readings on the planetoid, it was suddenly attacked by powerful weapons the likes of which have never been seen before. Unprepared for the surprise assault, the Herald was completely annihilated.

Captain Lupinus had a grim look on his face. He didn't like unknowns, especially when the lives of his crew were at stake. Where was this planetoid from? Why did it attack the Herald? What strange weapons does it carry that are unknown to the Commonwealth? Why is it headed toward Epsilon-SPP? What will it take to stop the planetoid? Too many unknowns as far as Captain Lupinus was concerned. And that always made him feel uneasy. He preferred to know what he was dealing with, so he could make the appropriate preparations beforehand. Mother Bethany sensed his tension.

Four more ships dropped out of warp. A sister ship, the Commonwealth Heavy Cruiser known as the Winter Knight, led by Captain Steele. A Commonwealth Light Cruiser, the Baron, commanded by Captain Hemingway. And a Commonwealth Dreadnought, called Glamdring, with Captain Turgon in command.

The fourth ship, to Captain Lupinus' surprise, was a Sidhe Heavy Cruiser. It must have been in Commonwealth space for joint operations. The Vespertillion was led by Captain Larillicent. All Sidhe starships had an organic quality to them, with large bat wings folded on the sides.

Clearly, the Commonwealth was taking no chances with this planetoid after having lost the Herald. Five ships should be more than enough, Captain Lupinus thought to himself.

Then, to everyone's surprise, a sixth ship arrived on the scene. It was neither Commonwealth or Sidhe. It was a Grex Battlecruiser. This particular Battlecruiser was well known to the Commonwealth. It was the Death Dealer commanded by Captain Drek.

A transmission came through on an open channel to every starship present. Captain Drek appeared on the view screen, his four arms folded across his chest. He stood on his Bridge, which was bustling with activity. Captain Drek's many bone protrusions were displayed prominently for everyone to see.

"As you all know, the Grex claim this space as their own. Including Epsilon-SPP. And, while you might contest the matter, having your diplomats argue endlessly about it, the Grex are willing to defend the area. Even against this intergalactic enemy that now threatens it. My quarrel is not with you this day. But cross me in any way or attempt to stop me, and I will gladly blow your starship out of the stars."

The transmission ended before anyone could respond.

An unexpected addition, Captain Lupinus thought, but a welcome one. We don't know what we are facing. In the battle to come, every starship could be crucial. Even a Grex Battlecruiser. Strange how a foreign threat can turn even the most bitter of enemies into friends.

Captain Lupinus was about to contact the other Commonwealth Captains when the planetoid entered the vicinity at long range. Maximum magnification on the view screen revealed a Six-Pointed Star Shape to the planetoid. The object was huge, many times larger than a starship. Captain Lupinus estimated it was roughly the size of a Battle Station. A dread feeling came over him. If they failed to stop this extragalactic invader, everyone on Epsilon-SPP would die. Captain Lupinus could not let that happen, no matter what the cost to the Black Wolf.

"Captain, we're receiving a repeating message from the planetoid. Audio only," Chrysanthemum reported. The living flower was clearly stressed. You could see it in her petals.

"Let's hear it, Mum," Talbot replied. Finally, he would get some answers. Hopefully, this will shed some light on the situation.

"Prepare...<BZZT>...<DRTTZ>...No Escape...<RRZZK>...Nothing...<DZZAT>...Useless...<TRZZT>...<MMPBB>...No Hope...<SSRRTTT>...Destroy Planet...<FZZITT>...Retribution...<XRITTZ>...Revenge...<KRZZZZ>...Death..."

Captain Lupinus and Mother Bethany stared at each other with a worried look.

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 06.30.19 SUPPLEMENTAL

Link to previous Black Wolf Journals

Captain Lupinus' heart hung heavy as he watched the view screen. His instincts told him from the beginning that this was a battle that could not be won by force. And he had been right. If only the price to be proven correct was not so high...

The Baron, a Commonwealth Light Cruiser, was nearly destroyed. The Black Wolf's sister ship, the Winter Knight, also a Commonwealth Heavy Cruiser, had lost four of her shields and suffered massive internals. She had few weapons left. Glamdring, a Commonwealth Dreadnought, was still fighting hard, even with two down shields and minor damage. Alongside the Glamdring fought the Death Dealer, a Grex Battlecruiser, and the Vespertillion, a Sidhe Heavy Cruiser. As Captain Lupinus noted before, a common threat makes strange bedfellows.

But the Robotic Battle Station that was on a collision course with Epsilon-SPP was not completely invulnerable. It had suffered significant damage of its own and lost two of its six weapons. Simon determined that each of the six weapons could take on a different configuration, allowing it to simulate a weapon of foreign origin. These strange weapons were much more powerful than the weapons employed in our galaxy. It is almost as if they were the next era of technology. Sometimes they would fire as Bolts of Disruptive Energy. Other times as Powerful Seeking Plasma Energy. One of the weapons delivered a Deadly Implosion Effect. Still another launched Multiple Missiles, much larger than any we have ever seen. Yet another utilized a Beam which literally Shook its Target to Pieces.

The Glamdring hammered the Battle Station with Scatterguns while the Death Dealer closed in with Battle Blades extended. The Robot greeted the Death Dealer with some kind of Fusion Weapon, clearly deadly at close range. The Death Dealer lost its forward shield and suffered internal damage, but not before its Battle Blades could deliver their own Energy Slashes. Wounded, the Death Dealer turned away from the Battle Station, launching one of its Fragmentation Drones. The Drone split into Smaller Drones and sped toward the Alien Robot. Blasts of Energy immediately shot down each of the Incoming Drones, preventing the Battle Station from being harmed. The Planetoid had some kind of Close Defense System.

The Vespertillion attacked from a different angle, its bat wings spread wide. Organic spikes shot out from its Sidhe Hull, raining down destruction on the Robot Battle Station. In response, a new weapon was configured to fire at the Vespertillion. Pulses of Plasmatic Energy hit the Sidhe Heavy Cruiser over and over, ravaging its shields even as it turned away. The Vespertillion sped away from the Battle Station to repair its damage before beginning the battle anew.

The Black Wolf had taken a course parallel to the Robot Battle Station. Far enough to stay out of the fight, but close enough to run continuous scans. That Planetoid must have a weakness, Captain Lupinus surmised. And he had gambled his friend's lives on that hunch. They were buying him the time he needed to find the Planetoid's vulnerability.

"The Robot Battle Station can indeed be destroyed by an Anti Matter Probe," Simon said while still staring into the binocular device mounted on his work station. Talbot breathed a sigh of relief. "But it will take me considerable time to determine the proper location that will result in the Planetoid's Destruction."

"We don't have considerable time!" I snapped at Simon. My Science Officer looked at me with a shocked but controlled look. The Magisterium Magician rarely saw me lose control. "Commonwealth Soldiers are Dying! We have to stop this thing before Everyone on that planet is Killed! Now I want the precise location to destroy the Battle Station and I want it Yesterday!!"

"Yes, Captain," Simon replied, turning back to concentrate on his work. He knew that a great many lives depended on his success in the next few moments. Speed was of the essence. We could not afford to be complacent.

Was that really necessary? Mother Bethany asked telepathically. She was concerned, not only for my psychological well being, but for Simon's as well. We have to destroy this robot, I answered Bethany mentally. No matter what the cost. If that means I have to push my Science Officer and bruise his ego, then that's what I have to do. I'll apologize and make it up to him later. IF we all survive this.

Mother Bethany glared at Captain Lupinus from her chair. She was about to respond to his decision to snap at Simon, but chose not to. They would discuss it later. As her Beloved had said...if they survive this.

The Winter Knight was pummeled by Torpedoes of Photonic Energy. It exploded in a fireball of white brilliance.

"Simon, we need those coordinates fast."

The Death Dealer launched its last Fragmentation Drone, only to have it shot down by the Robot's Close Defense System. With a brave battlecry, the Death Dealer charged the Battle Station. It was Mauled by a Blast of Energy so powerful it would have required a combining of energy from key power systems to create it. The Death Dealer blew up into pieces. Captain Drek received the type of death he craved.

"Simon, we don't have much time."

The Vespertillion swooped down at the Robot Battle Station from an oblique angle. A strange organic tail emerged from the Sidhe starship, firing a burst of swirling energy at the Planetoid. The blast found its mark, destroying a third weapon on the Battle Station. Then a Ball of Plasma Energy closed in on the Vespertillion. The Sidhe Heavy Cruiser tried to outrun it, to no avail. Unable to stop the ferocious damage, the Vespertillion's rear shield collapsed, allowing the deadly Plasma Energy to completely ravage the Sidhe starship.

"Everyone's relying on you, Simon."

The Glamdring was the last to fall. The gallant Commonwealth Dreadnought fought like a wounded bear. It spun, using fresh shield after fresh shield to absorb incoming damage at every opportunity. All the while, the Glamdring fired its Phasers and Scatterguns, trying to destroy a fourth weapon on the Robotic Battle Station. It succeeded. But not before Missile after Missile struck the Glamdring, tearing down its remaining defenses, and causing critical damage. These deadly Seeking Drones were nearly impossible to stop. In the end, the Glamdring drifted in space, a lifeless black hull that stood as a testimony to all who had perished within it.

"Hurry, Simon. Hurry!"

The Robot Battle Station inched closer to Epsilon-SPP. The inhabitants of the planet started to lose all hope. Nothing could stop this invader from beyond that was bent on their destruction.

"Simon, we need the location. NOW!!!"

Simon spun around to face the Captain. Even under his purple hood, you could see the beads of sweat on his brow and cheeks. With enlarged eyeballs and quivering hands, he spoke,

"Captain, I have found the precise location that the Anti-Matter Probe must impact in order to destroy the Robot Battle Station! But I have some bad news as well..."

"The Probe must be fired within 10,000 Kilometers of the Target Area!"

Captain Lupinus looked at Eyeball directly in his singular eye.

"We really need you this time, Eyeball. No more excuses. There are millions of lives at stake, including the entire crew of the Black Wolf. Now, in order for the Anti-Matter Probe to destroy the Robot Battle Station, we have to fire it from no further than 10,000 Kilometers. We've seen what the weapons on that Planetoid can do. The Baron, Winter Knight, Vespertillion, Death Dealer, and Glamdring were all destroyed. If we charge the Battle Station we'll be incinerated before we reach the firing zone. We need a "magical device" to get us there. Its situations like this that prompted Commonwealth Command to create a Research and Development Department on the Black Wolf. So...what have you got?"

The tall Cyclopean stared back at Captain Lupinus with his one eye. He seemed to be searching his thoughts for a solution. Finally, he replied with hesitation in his voice.

"There is only one device that I am working on which can do what you ask, Captain. And I know that you don't want to hear it, but the device is still in the experimental phase. To state things plainly, it is dangerous to use. But, if you are willing to risk it, I can have it ready for use within minutes. It is a highly advanced transportation device which utilizes quantum energy. I suppose you could call a Quantum Transporter."

Captain Lupinus was willing to do anything to save Epsilon-SPP. Even sacrifice the Black Wolf. Still, he had to be aware of the possibilities. "What kind of danger are we talking about, Eyeball?"

The Cyclopean coughed and then adjusted his black ponytail. "Well, the entire Black Wolf will be transported to the target location. But because the technology hasn't been perfected yet, I can't guarantee that the Black Wolf will be in one piece when we arrive. The recombination matrix hasn't passed all the trials yet. In other words, parts of the ship might be...disconnected...when we arrive."

Captain Lupinus was quiet for a moment. He was assessing the risk versus reward in his mind. There was no other way. The planet would be destroyed by the Battle Station unless they acted. The Black Wolf was the planet's only hope for survival.

"Have the Quantum Transporter ready for use immediately. And take whatever precautions are necessary to protect the Anti-Matter Probe. No matter what shape we are in when we arrive, we have to fire that Probe."

"Understood, Captain. It will be done." Eyeball turned and began giving orders to his team. There was a frenzy of activity in the Research and Development Department.

Captain Lupinus left and returned to the Bridge. A heavy weight burdened his Soul. He was worried about how many crew members would perish in the transport. But then he remembered the Baron, Winter Knight, and Glamdring. His eyes hardened with fierceness. Captain Lupinus refused to allow their sacrifice to have been for nothing. They gave their lives so the Black Wolf would have its chance. And now, thanks to the Quantum Transporter, Talbot had that chance. He would not fail.

Soon, after informing the Bridge and entire crew about what they were about to do, Talbot sat in his Captain's Chair waiting for Eyeball to inform him the device was ready. He looked at his love, Mother Bethany, afraid that something might happen to her. She reached out and held his hand. Whatever happens, she whispered telepathically to Talbot, I'll always be with you.

"Mum, give me shipwide," Captain Lupinus instructed his Communications Officer. The living flower pressed a button on her display with one of her stalks.

"Crew of the Black Wolf. You know what we are about to do. We have to do whatever it takes to save that planet. Even if it means sacrificing our own lives. Just know that I am tremendously proud of you." Talbot paused to clear his throat. "Each and Every One of You. We'll get through this, I swear. Captain Lupinus out."

The call came in from Eyeball informing Captain Lupinus the Quantum Transporter was ready for use.

"Eyeball, take us to within 10,000 Kilometers of that Robot Battle Station."

It happened faster than Talbot thought. He wasn't sure why, but for some reason Talbot thought it would take longer for the device to activate. Or maybe his mind just needed time to process what was happening. Regardless, as Talbot kept his eyes on the view screen, one second they were in their previous location, the next second they were right next to the Battle Station.

Suddenly, the Black Wolf rocked with devastation. Everyone on the Bridge was thrown out of their seat as the Bridge seemingly tilted to one side. A red triangle flashed bright red while a loud siren sounded repeatedly. Quickly, Captain Lupinus climbed back into his Captain's Chair.

The Intercom sounded. "Captain!"

It was Haphaestus in Engineering. Talbot answered his frantic call without delay. "Smithy, what's happening down there?"

"When that One-Eyed Giant activated that bloody Transporter of his, he tore apart my Warp Drive! The poor thing materialized all fractured into pieces. Its taking my whole crew everything they got to keep the engine from blowing to Kingdom Come! As it is, we don't have Warp Power, I've got multiple fires in Engineering, and I've lost sixteen crew members. Whatever you're going to do, you better do it. Quick!"

There were injuries on the Bridge, but Talbot couldn't think about that. He spun around in his chair to face Simon. His Science Officer was already staring into the binocular-shaped device that was mounted to his console. He answered Captain Lupinus before Talbot could even say anything.

"Target Location acquired and locked in. Anti-Matter Probe charged and ready to fire. Just give the command, Captain."

"I'm also reading a build up of energy in one of the Battle Station's remaining weapons. The Robot is about to launch a Seeking Sphere of Plasma Energy at the Black Wolf."

Captain Lupinus squinted his eyes. Black hair grew on his arms and neck. With sharp fangs in his mouth, he snarled at Simon to give the command.

"FIRE!!!!!"

The Anti-Matter Probe struck the Robot Battle Station's vulnerability without difficulty. The Plantoid shook and shuddered, as if it had injested a deadly poison that it could not expel. Finally, miniature explosions started to dot the surface, followed by cracks in the Battle Station's hull. It was a dying beast, one that desperately wanted to reach Epsilon-SPP to complete its mission. Then, to end its misery, a gigantic blast ripped the Robot Battle Station apart from the inside out. The Anti-Matter Probe they had launched did its work well. The Black Wolf had succeeded.

But, even in death, the Robot Battle Station struck out at those it despised. Captain Lupinus watched in terror as a huge ball of plasma approached the Black Wolf. He called to Engineering to divert all Reserve Power to the forward shield, but there was no response. They were busy doing everything they could to prevent the fractured Warp Drive from exploding. Captain Lupinus ordered for the Phasers to fire at the incoming Plasma Sphere, but Phasers were inoperative due to the Experimental Quantum Transportation. Talbot grasped Mother Bethany's hand and held on tight.

The Plasma Torpedo struck the Black Wolf. The forward shield immediately collapsed, barely slowing the deadly energy from proceeding. Everyone on the Bridge was violently thrown to the right, and then to the left, and then to the right again. There were multiple explosions, hull breaches, and casualties. So many casualties. Captain Lupinus looked around the Bridge with a horrified expression. Chrysanthemum was unconscious, Eleanor was bleeding profusely, K'Gwich'Squit had a metal rod sticking out of his torso, and Bulwark's arms were twisted into an abnormal position. Dr. Bumble reported over the intercom that the Medbay was overflowing with injured personnel. Damage Reports continued to come in, indicating that the Black Wolf was in critical condition. They had barely survived the Plasma Torpedo and many of the crew had perished. Talbot cursed under his breath while Mother Bethany went from person to person using her healing powers to keep them alive.

Soon, three Commonwealth starships dropped out of Warp to lend aid. Captain Lupinus breathed easier once he saw rescue team after rescue team beam on board the Black Wolf. There were medical officers, engineers, and specialists of every sort. It wasn't long before the Black Wolf was brought back into a stable condition. Even the Warp Drive was repaired sufficiently to prevent it from exploding. But no matter how many relief personnel arrived on the Black Wolf, they couldn't replace the lives that had been lost in the battle to stop the Robot Battle Station. Captain Lupinus swore to himself that their sacrifice would never be forgotten.

A call came in from Epsilon-SPP. It was the President. A once great military man, he was now a politician due to a leg injury. Still, his experience and wisdom were invaluable. He was greatly respected by all.

Captain Lupinus looked at the President on the view screen. The Bridge of the Black Wolf was in shambles. And Captain Lupinus looked so weary that he might collapse at any moment.

"Captain, all of Epsilon-SPP thanks you. You have our Eternal Gratitude. None of us would be alive if not for the Commonwealth. There are celebrations going on in every city. Please tell me, is there anything we can do for you at this moment?"

Talbot looked at the body of a Bridge Officer who had died due to the Plasma Torpedo impact. He stared for a long moment, remembering his name, his personality, and his family. Then he turned back toward the President on the view screen.

"Yes, President. There is something you can do. Something we all should do."

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL

"Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins?"

Captain Lupinus looked up at the middle-aged couple standing before him. The man was tall with excessive gray hairs on his head. The woman's hair was tied in a bun and she wore an apron for cooking. Captain Lupinus was in his full Commonwealth Uniform, pure white with the Commonwealth Logo prominently displayed on the right side of his chest. On his collar, four golden buttons signified his rank as Captain. After short introductions were made, Captain Lupinus was invited inside their house. He sat on a couch while Mrs. Jenkins brought hot coffee for everyone.

Captain Lupinus handed Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins a folded Commonwealth flag, followed by a box of effects. "These were Jim's. Included are Personal Log Entries, Photographs, Videos, Family Pictures, his Uniform, a Musical Instrument, and other small items he collected throughout his journey. Jim was a valued member of my crew and a talented Engineer. He will be greatly missed."

Mr. Jenkins sifted through the box while Mrs. Jenkins looked away. Her eyes were tearing up. Mr. Jenkins shook Captain Lupinus' hand. "Thank you for taking the time to deliver his things to us personally. I know you are a busy man. Our son was proud to serve with you. It was always his dream to serve on board a starship."

Captain Lupinus looked at Mrs. Jenkins, whose whole body was shaking. Suddenly, she spun around to face Talbot, her eyes red from crying.

"No! We are NOT doing this. I refuse to. We are NOT going to pretend that my son's death is OK. It is NOT! My son is Dead, do you hear me? DEAD!! And it's all your FAULT!"

Mr. Jenkins rose to his feet to calm his wife. "Margaret, please..."

"Did you do everything you could do to save my son's life, Captain Lupinus? Where was he in Engineering when he died? Did you give the command to activate the Experimental Quantum Transporter? Didn't you know how dangerous it was? Did you know it would kill the crewmen who served under your command? Then WHY did you do it?! Did you have to intercept that Robotic Battle Station? Why didn't you wait for reinforcements? Why didn't you try to communicate with it? There must have been some other way to stop it. I thought the Black Wolf was the Pride of the Commonwealth, with the most Advanced Technology available. Then why did my son Die, Captain Lupinus? WHY DIDN'T YOU SAVE HIM?!?"

Mrs. Jenkin's eyes burst into tears. Quickly, Mr. Jenkins put his arms around her. But she pushed him away. Shaking, she continued her assault on Talbot.

"Oh, it's so easy for you, isn't it Captain? You give us his things, leave here, and never have to think about him again. But what about us, Captain? What are we supposed to do when his Birthday comes around? What about his empty seat at Thanksgiving and Christmas? Who is going to answer when I send a subspace transmission telling him that I am worried about him and that I miss him terribly? What about his Fiancee who was going to be his Wife? What is she supposed to do now, Captain Lupinus? What about the Family they were supposed to have together? What about the Grandchildren that we will never see? Will your Commonwealth Flag replace these things, Captain? WILL IT?? I will Never hear my son play music again. I have listened to him play since he was a young boy. It made me so happy to hear him play. But now he's dead. My Jim is DEAD. I WILL NEVER HEAR HIM PLAY MUSIC AGAIN, DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!?"

Mrs. Jenkins nearly fell over because she was trembling so much. Quickly, Mr. Jenkins helped her to sit down. She leaned on his chest and began to weep loudly.

Captain Lupinus was at a loss for words. His throat was coarse and a heavy feeling began crushing his chest. Talbot rose to his feet.

"It was a mistake coming here. You have my deepest condolences. I will leave you to your Mourning." Talbot walked toward the front door to leave.

Mr. Jenkins ran after Captain Lupinus. He caught him right before he could leave. Mr. Jenkins spoke in a hushed voice so his wife could not hear.

"It takes a brave man to come here and face the loved ones who remain alive after their son died. I admire your courage. I know you did everything you could do, Captain. We don't blame you for his death. My wife just needs time. She didn't mean those things she said. Please...Forgive her."

Captain Lupinus looked at Mrs. Jenkins. Then he stared straight into Mr. Jenkins eyes. "It is I who should be asking for your Forgiveness, Sir. I'm very sorry for your Loss."

As Captain Lupinus walked down the pathway that led away from the house, he struggled with what Mrs. Jenkins had said to him. It's true, their son was no longer in their lives. And it was his fault. As much as he wanted to blame the Fates, or Random Chance, or that Robotic Battle Station from beyond, it really was his fault. Jim was no longer alive because of the Command Decisions that Captain Lupinus had made. One question kept repeating in Talbot's mind, all the way back to the Black Wolf.

DID YOU DO EVERYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO SERVED UNDER YOU?

Back in 2014, I designed the Floater Zeppelin Cruiser for Omega Regenesis (a very chaotic, unbalanced galaxy). Omega Regenesis is now Project-O, a galaxy with a heavy focus on Balance in design. Accordingly, the Floater Zeppelin Cruiser needs to be updated to reflect the new Design Paradigm.

In order to update the Floater Zeppelin Cruiser, we have to first examine its original components. They are Remote Spheres, Plasma Billows, the Flotation Device, Micro Phasers, and Quantum Phasers.

Remote Spheres are very creative, but extremely unbalanced. The idea is that, at any time, a Sphere can transform to become a seeking weapon (drone), a fighter (slow with a single weak weapon), or a satellite (immobile with a single powerful weapon). In this way, they are unpredictable to the enemy, with a wide variety of tactical applications.

Plasma Billows are extremely slow plasmas that only degrade from turn to turn. They are meant to restrict and control movement, not really to hit the target. Plasma Billows can also be useful for seeking weapon defense.

The Flotation Device allows the Floater Cruiser to move at a slow speed for a very cheap and economical energy cost. The speed is fixed, as is the energy cost. If the Floater Cruiser uses its own warp to move (faster or slower), then the Flotation Device is automatically cancelled. The Flotation Device can absorb multiple hits before being destroyed.

Micro Phasers and Quantum Phasers are self-evident.

Now each component needs to assessed for compatibility with Project-O.

Sadly, the Remote Spheres need to go. Their unorthodox nature places them well outside conventional SFB rules. That means their inclusion will severely throw off any playtest results. Maybe the Remote Spheres can be included in a different galaxy. But they cannot be part of the Floaters in Project-O.

The idea of Plasma Billows fits in nicely with the Floaters, complimenting their slow, ponderous nature. The only thing I need to do is revise their energy cost and damage. They are currently one-turn weapons (too fast) which generate damage from 12-8 (depending on how many turns they are on the board). For base comparisons, the Plasma Billow must be compared (for energy/damage) to the Plasma-F, the Disruptor, and the Photon Torpedo.

The Flotation Device is another item that has merit without causing imbalance. It is a type of energy saver, one that allows the Floater Cruiser to move without expending a great deal of power. I will have to revise the energy cost/movement generated to allow for a wider range of options (instead of one static movement speed and a single energy cost). Also, the hits to destroy the Flotation Device will need to be reduced.

Having two different types of Phasers, especially Omega Phasers, will create imbalance in playtesting and actual game play. Not only does there need to be only one kind of Phaser for the Floaters, but the Phaser needs to be Balanced. This means that if an Omega Phaser is chosen, the Range Brackets and Damage Output need to be revised to make it comparable to Alpha Sector Phasers. Alternatively, I may just create an All-New (but Balanced) Phaser for the Floaters.

In conclusion, the Floaters need a good deal of work in order to be updated to Project-O standards. The Remote Spheres need to be replaced with a different kind of heavy weapon. I am unsure what this heavy weapon will be. Will it be a Seeking Weapon? A Direct-Fire Weapon? A Type of Drone? Whatever it turns out to be, it must compliment the Floater's current Tactical Abilities. Right now, they are slow moving ships with Plasma Billows for defense.

The Flotation Device needs reworking and I may need to create a New Phaser for the Floaters. Either that or Heavily Revise an existing Omega Phaser.

Finally, the Floater will need a New Turn Mode. It currently has a Turn Mode of E, which doesn't make much sense for such a slow moving vessel. Instead, the Floater Cruiser should have a very good Turn Mode, one which allows it to pivot as necessary while moving slowly.

More on the Floater Zeppelin Cruiser as it gets worked on.

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 07.04.19

Captain Lupinus, Mother Bethany, and Trentelifyn sat across from two delegates from the Emitron Assembly. Dark skinned beings with three eyes and long necks, their names were Loga and Cherin. The Emitron have expressed interest in joining the Commonwealth. All five individuals were gathered in the Conference Room on board the Black Wolf. With refreshments on the table, the discussion began.

"We thank you for your interest in becoming part of the Commonwealth," Trent said. The Ambassador lived for moments like this. His horns were polished and wings tucked back. "The Commonwealth would like nothing more than to have Emitron as a member. I'm sure you understand that there are some matters we need more information on before we finalize your approval."

Loga responded quickly, motioning with his hand as he did so. "Of course, Trentelifyn. As you know, Emitron recently developed Warp Drive, so our starships can now venture forth to explore the galaxy. We were overjoyed when we discovered that the Commonwealth, a benevolent organization, was well established in our region of space. Emitron has much to offer the Commonwealth in terms of resources, culture, religion, military, food, and language. I'm sure the Commonwealth will enjoy the strategic location that Emitron provides as well."

"We will get straight to the point," Captain Lupinus said with his hands folded on top of one another. His black goatee was neatly trimmed. "Our surveys have indicated the existence of two populations, the Doma and the Karoo, that are not part of the Emitron Assembly. As they represent a significant portion of your planet's population, we wanted to understand exactly why that is."

There was a moment of silence at the table. Finally, Cherin chose to answer Captain Lupinus' inquiry. "We have nothing to hide, Captain. The Doma are an inferior race. As such, they are not allowed to join our Emitron Assembly. It has always been this way. The Karoo are a warlike group, one which engages in frequent terrorist activities. As the Emitron Assembly is peaceful by nature, we cannot allow an organization dedicated to war and death to join."

Trent looked at Captain Lupinus, who in turn looked at Mother Bethany. Mother Bethany spoke to Cherin in a calm, soothing voice. "Cherin, the Commonwealth prefers that a United Planet becomes a member. That Unity shows that the Planet has made certain Moral Progress and that they are ready to join the Galactic Community. If you have not solved your own differences, then how can the Emitron Assembly claim they are ready to join the Commonwealth? We cannot accept sixty percent of your Planet, while leaving out the other forty percent."

"Perhaps you can elaborate," Trent added, trying to diffuse the tension. "How do you know the Doma are inferior?"

"It has been genetically proven," Cherin said confidently. "We have the research to support our statements. The Doma are less intelligent, weaker, slower, and less ambitious than the Emitron. They don't understand modern technology, clinging to older outdated methods. Our people refuse to mate with them because it would produce genetically inferior children. The Doma also carry infectious diseases which can be harmful to our people. That is why they cannot be part of the Emitron Assembly."

Captain Lupinus and Mother Bethany contemplated the response.

"And the Karoo?" Trent continued. "Have you made any attempts to make peace with them?"

"Many," Loga answered. "Every communication with them has ended in disaster. For some reason, they view attempts at peace as a sign of weakness. The Karoo pretend to want to discuss peace, and then kidnap our representatives to use as hostages. They are a vile and hateful people. Their religion tells them that they are the chosen, a select group of people who have the right to kill indiscriminately. There is no reasoning with them. All we can do is prevent any acts of destruction they attempt."

Again, there was silence at the Conference Table. Everyone drank their beverage to cool their tongues. Then Captain Lupinus spoke.

"The Benefits of Commonwealth Membership must be shared by ALL. Freedom, Technology, Weaponry, Education, Agriculture, Enlightenment, Health, Safety, Peace...these are all Rights that EVERYONE is Entitled To. You understand that the Commonwealth is hesitant to extend these Benefits to only a Select Portion of your Planet. We will have to discuss your reasons for the Doma and Karoo with Commonwealth Command. In the meantime, the Commonwealth will be sending representatives trained in these matters to your Planet. These representatives will work with you personally to make contact with the Doma and Karoo. We want to be sure every avenue has been explored."

Everyone at the Conference Table stood up. Loga and Cherin bowed to Trentelifyn, Captain Lupionus, and Mother Bethany. "We thank you for your consideration. I'm sure these details can be worked out. We will make preparations to receive your representatives."

Later, after Loga and Cherin had left the Black Wolf, Trentelifyn, Captain Lupinus, and Mother Bethany discussed the matter.

"It is unfortunate when differences cannot be worked out," Trent stated, shaking his head. "I'm sure the Karoo have their own reasons for being so violent toward the Emitron. Perhaps at some point in their history, the Karoo were terribly mistreated. Our Commonwealth Representatives should discover the truth of their relationship."

"And it is disturbing that the Emitron honestly believe they are Superior to the Doma," Mother Bethany said, sipping her tea. "I don't care what Genetic Data you have to support your position. An Advanced Civilization treats ALL of its people, young or old, rich or poor, intelligent or dumb, strong or weak...the SAME. Benefits of Society must be shared by ALL or they mean NOTHING."

Captain Lupinus was quiet for a moment. "We must be careful not to judge an Alien Culture by our own Values. Their ways are not necessarily our ways. We are not out here in space to Judge Them. At the same time, the Commonwealth must be Careful about who it allows to become a Member. Denial into the Commonwealth is a Major Decision, not one to be taken Lightly."

"As part of the Crew of the Black Wolf, we are the Best Representatives of the Commonwealth. Our Crew is composed of Diverse Species, each with their own Values and Beliefs. Yet we have found the Common Ground to act as One. We don't believe that one crew member is Superior to another or that it is impossible to communicate with a certain species because of their Religious Beliefs."

"We shouldn't take for Granted what we have Achieved. It truly is a Miracle that we have become a Melting Pot with a Singular Unified Purpose."

"May it ALWAYS be So."

Why not use the original floater rules and spheres as some kind of monster? Sounds like something different and interesting that should not be lost.

By Norman Dizon (Normandizon) on Friday, July 05, 2019 - 02:59 am: Edit

Hi Nick. I agree that the concept of the Spheres should not be forgotten. At this point, I have a few options of where to place them:

1) In Valhalla, where the Fantastic and Wild is Ever-Present.

2) As a Type of Monster.

3) As an "Insane" empire like the Nicozians.

4) In a New Galaxy where EVERYONE uses the Spheres.

We will see where the Spheres ultimately end up. Unfortunately, working on the Spheres is low priority compared to many of the other things I have cooking.

Captain Lupinus entered the Crew Quarters of his Tactical Officer not knowing what to expect. His Tactical Officer had missed three days of duty shifts, causing concern in Talbot's mind. He had been excused for medical reasons, but Captain Lupinus could not help but to imagine that this was all building up to something. Something bad.

Inside, Captain Lupinus found Icicle laying on his bed with Doctor Bumble examining him. Her Tricorder was emitting a low humming noise, an indication she was running continuous scans of his vital functions. Icicle did not look like he was in good shape. There was water all over his bed and his snow appeared to be molting. Doctor Bumble stopped her scans and turned to face Talbot. His Insecta Doctor had a look of concern on her face which showed in her oversized yellow compound eyes and her green antennae.

"Babbity, what's going on?" Talbot asked his Chief Medical Officer. Now he was really worried. "What is Icicle's condition?"

"Physiologically, he's fine," Doctor Bumble reported. Her transparent wings fluttered slightly. "As far as I can tell that is. My knowledge of Glacian Biology is limited. Over the last three days, Icicle has grown weaker and weaker. I can't explain it. Now, his snow appears to be melting."

Talbot was quiet as he stared at Icicle on the bed. His Tactical Officer had acquired the nickname from his Academy Roommates. Not quite accurate since his body was composed of snow, not ice. Icicle strained to look up at Captain Lupinus with weary eyes.

"Doctor..." Icicle whispered in a hushed voice. "Will you please excuse us? I need to talk to Captain Lupinus alone. I appreciate everything you have done for me, Doctor Bumble."

Babbity looked hesitant to leave her patient. But, after glancing at Talbot, she decided to honor Icicle's request. "Alright, but I'll be back within the hour. Keep the temperature in your crew quarters extremely low to slow the melting process. And I want you to consume a steady diet of ice cubes to help your internal functions."

Icicle nodded, indicating he would follow the Doctor's instructions. Doctor Bumble looked at Talbot and then left the room.

Talbot knelt down next to Icicle's bed. He was close to the snowman's exhausted face. "Icicle, tell us how to help you. You must know what is wrong with you. Please, I don't want to lose my Tactical Officer. What can we do?" Talbot put his hand on Icicle's hand, which felt unusually warm.

"Captain..." Icicle said, struggling to speak. He stared into Talbot's eyes with his own pure white pupils. "Are you familiar with the salmon or sea turtles of Earth 2? Do you know of how they are called back to their place of birth in order to mate? They migrate vast distances in order to return home. They must. They have no choice."

Talbot listened to his Tactical Officer intently. He remembered his early Biology Classes at Commonwealth Academy. "Yes, Icicle. I know of them. What does that have to do with you?"

Icicle paused for a moment. He coughed several times, spitting out chunks of ice from his mouth. Then he continued.

"It is the same for all Glacians. At a certain point in our lives, no matter where we are in the Galaxy, we must return home to the Glacian Ice Caps where we were born. There, we will join with a mate and spawn a new brood of Icelings."

"You must bring me home, Captain. I don't have much time left. Please...divert the Black Wolf's current course and take me to the Glacian Ice Caps at maximum warp. Before it's too late."

Captain Lupinus considered his Tactical Officer's request. The Black Wolf was currently headed toward a planet that had requested humanitarian assistance due to recent earthquakes. Explaining to Commonwealth Command that their arrival would be delayed would not be easy. But at the same time, he could not afford to lose his Tactical Officer. Not when he had the power to save him. Talbot would simply have to face the repercussions of his decision after the fact.

"Alright, Icicle," Captain Lupinus said in a reassuring tone. "The Black Wolf will take you to your Homeworld. You know, I'm going to get into big trouble for this. I'm trusting that everything you have told me is the truth and that you haven't left anything out. Don't worry, we'll get you back into working condition in no time. It won't take us long to reach the Glacian Ice Caps. Luckily, they are only slightly off our current heading."

Icicle looked relieved. He managed a slight smile. The Glacian would be in Talbot's debt for saving his life.

As Captain Lupinus turned to leave Icicle's crew quarters, he asked one final question.

"Ice, just out of curiosity. What would happen to you if I refused?"

Icicle looked at Captain Lupinus with a morbid expression. He had a look of death in his white eyes.

"I would continue to melt, Captain. Until there was nothing left of me except for a puddle of water."

CODEX ICHABORN
DESIGNER'S NOTES
PANGAEA

Link to previous Designer's Notes
Link to Pangaea

Pangaea is based upon a single question: What if Heavy Cruisers were the size of Fast Patrol Ships? This is an extreme question and many would argue that the answer is impossible. However, I have found a working solution, one which is playable and tactically fulfilling on the tabletop.

There are many issues that need to be addressed. We will go through each of them one by one.

Obviously, the Phasers of the Alpha Sector cannot be used for Pangaea. The PH-1, PH-2, and PH-3 simply score too much damage. New Phasers needed to be created which generated damage more on the scale of Pangaea. This took the form of the Phaser-0 (zero) and the Phaser-1/2 (one half).

The next topic was very important. In order for games to last, and for there to be tactical meaning for each commander, there needed to be a way to make the heavy cruisers of Pangaea more resistant to damage (without enlarging their internal composition). With their tiny size, battles would be over in a single volley, resulting in games without tactical significance.

My solution for this was to have each Heavy Cruiser in Pangaea be reinforced with Neutronium. This would allow each starship to absorb more internal damage, with key systems protected, without becoming too unbalancing. As the battle wore on, the Neutronium would eventually get used up, allowing hits on the DAC to proceed normally. This was an elegant solution which I believed worked very well for gameplay in Pangaea.

However, the technical explanation for this left much to be desired. Why would every empire in Pangaea have access to Neutronium? For the stranger ships (living ships, etc.), how do they employ the Neutronium? Why did Neutronium become the standard for starship protection in Pangaea? I reserve these answers for some kind of techno-babble, to be discussed late one evening over drinks in a coffee shop. To me, these explanations (which can be whatever you want) are not nearly as important as making sure tabletop gameplay is functional.

Another issue is the Energy to Damage Ratio. Because of the severe power limitations of Pangaea, the Energy to Damage Ratio needed to be adjusted. Instead of the standard 1 Energy yields 2 Damage Points, Pangaea uses 1 Energy yields 3 Damage Points. This allows Pangaea Heavy Cruisers to still have combat capability even with extremely limited energy.

On the subject of energy, the standard Battery was insufficient for Pangaea. Having one point of Reserve Power was simply not enough to make combat tactically satisfying. For this reason, X-Batteries were employed on all Pangaea Heavy Cruisers. This gives them a few points of Reserve Power to work with in combat (which can all be lost by a single roll on the DAC).

Drones needed to be scaled back, so Micro Drones were born. Micro Drones score less damage upon impact and can easily be destroyed by the PH-0 and the PH-1/2. Scatterpacks can be used in Pangaea, but they release only a limited number of Micro Drones.

Administrative Shuttles also needed modification because they were too durable and scored too much damage. Admin Shuttles in Pangaea, therefore, require less damage to be destroyed and are armed with a single PH-1/2.

Pangaea Heavy Cruisers do not use the Fast Patrol Damage Chart under (K5.1). Instead, they use the standard DAC.

Heavy Weapons in Pangaea needed modification to work with the new Energy to Damage Ratio. This required careful attention because Heavy Weapons form one of the most important foundations for tabletop combat. In addition, Heavy Weapons give each empire their own unique flavor. So it was essential that Pangaea Heavy Weapons work properly during gameplay.

Of course, Shields, Internals, and Total Power needed to be adjusted to account for the smaller size of Pangaea Heavy Cruisers.

So, in the end, what was I left with? Tiny little ships that could move quickly on just a few points of energy and that could turn on a dime with their AA Turn Mode. Small ships that could slug it out on the battlefield without being destroyed by a single volley. Micro ships that still required careful energy management and tactical planning. Miniature ships that reminded you of standard SFB gameplay, but played much differently in their own unique way.

Pangaea turned out to be a splendid creation like no other. I was quite satisfied with the result.

There are currently four Heavy Cruisers for Pangaea:

The Neanderthal Heavy Cruiser SSD uses Proto-Photon Torpedoes and Micro Drones.

The Trusleri Heavy Cruiser SSD uses Proto-Particle Accelerators and Proto-Mass Drivers.

The Urvogel Heavy Cruiser SSD uses Proto-Ruptor Guns and Proto-Lance Torpedoes.

The Shedim Heavy Cruiser SSD uses Dark Matter Waves and Dark Matter Bursts.

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 07.07.19

The Black Wolf arrived at the Glacian Ice Caps without delay. Although Commonwealth Command questioned his decision, Captain Lupinus was adamant that the detour was necessary to save the life of his Tactical Officer. Talbot promised to deliver humanitarian aid to the planet in need immediately after this affair was settled.

Icicle needed to be taken to the highest mountain peak in the Glacian Ice Caps. Named Mount Zero by Commonwealth Surveyors, this intimidating mountain was enormous in both size and height. Blizzard-like conditions prevented direct transportation to the summit. Captain Lupinus, Icicle, and Simon beamed down to a safe snowy location approximately three-quarters up Mount Zero. They would have to travel the other quarter of the way to the top on foot.

As Doctor Bumble could only provide limited assistance in regards to Icicle's deteriorating condition, it was decided that Simon would accompany the away team. Not only would his scientific knowledge be helpful, but his magical prowess could be life saving. In his wolf form, Captain Lupinus would pull Icicle and Simon on a sled to the peak of Mount Zero. The away team was given heat generating power packs, cold resistant environmental suits, and injections to adjust their bodies to the inhospitable environment. With a worried look, Mother Bethany kissed Talbot goodbye and wished the away team good luck.

The ascent up Mount Zero was not easy. Although Captain Lupinus had no difficulty pulling the sled in his giant wolf form, he had to be constantly aware of the many dangers Mount Zero presented. From the biting cold to freezing winds to pitfalls to shifting snow to avalanches, Talbot felt like he was fighting the mountain itself to get to the top. If not for the gear and injections they were given, there was no way they could climb this titanic mountain without getting killed. Luckily, they had made the necessary preparations beforehand and anticipated many of the dangers they would be facing.

Icicle, while weak, seemed invigorated by his home environment. The cold refreshed him, even though his body was losing snow fast. Just looking around at his surroundings seemed to inspire him to keep fighting to stay alive. Simon did everything he could for him, even using his magic at times to restore his inner strength.

After a full day of travel, one which seemed like weeks, the away team finally came within sight of the apex of Mount Zero. With renewed vigor, Talbot pulled with all his might. The giant black wolf ran upward, his paws digging into the snow for traction, all the while dragging the sled carrying Icicle and Simon as if it was an empty carton. Upon reaching the top of Mount Zero, Talbot let out a victorious howl, one which could be heard for miles and miles around them. The away team took in the view at the summit, stunned by what they saw.

The view at the top of Mount Zero was breathtaking. It was as if Heaven itself had opened her Gates. The constant blizzard partially blocked their view, but the away team could still see the numerous smaller mountains surrounding Mount Zero, as well as the lakes and valleys that existed far below. Each member of the away team felt as if they were floating above the world. It was a feeling that could not be explained, only experienced. Talbot realized that this feeling was why many mountaineers risked their lives regularly to climb the highest mountains on different worlds.

Suddenly, forms rose out of the snow around the away team. They were Glacians, men made of snow who were armed with strange staves. Surrounded, the away team made no movement, preferring instead to wait to see what was about to happen. Captain Lupinus transformed back into his human form. After a day's worth of hard pulling up a snow-filled mountain, Talbot was relieved to be back on his own two feet.

Twelve snowy figures approached the away team through the blizzard. The warrior snowmen quickly moved aside, giving way to these important beings. The six smaller figures were male Glacians and the six larger figures were female Glacians. Together, these twelve beings were the Kings and Queens of Glacia, the Ruling Body for the Entire World. Talbot and Simon respectfully bowed to the Glacian Kings and Queens. Then they brought Icicle forward for their examination.

The Kings and Queens immediately understood why Icicle had come home. They pointed toward a large figure made of snow, the female who would be Icicle's mate. Then a smaller snow being armed with a staff stepped in front of her. He seemed defiant and ready to fight.

Captain Lupinus leaned close to Icicle. "What's wrong, Ice? Who's the Glacian standing in-between you and your mate? Why does he look so angry?"

"His name is Frostheart," Icicle answered in a weak voice. The Glacians spoke to each other in strange tones almost imperceptible to outsiders. "Apparently, he is in love with my mate, Wintergale. Frostheart has challenged me to a duel to the death for her affection. It is his right to do so, Captain."

Captain Lupinus looked over Frostheart, assessing his combat capabilities. Then he turned back to Icicle. "But you're in no condition to fight, Icicle. How are the two of you going to duel with each other?"

"It's simple, Captain," Icicle answered, pointing to a ceremonial staff the Kings and Queens had placed next to the sled.

"You are going to fight in my stead."

Talbot reluctantly agreed to take Icicle's place in his Duel to the Death against Frostheart. The winner would become Wintergale's Mate, which would default to Icicle should Talbot be victorious. Captain Lupinus had no choice; to refuse meant that Icicle would have no mate and therefore would die. Simon accepted Captain Lupinus' decision with trepidation.

Talbot examined the ceremonial staff that he would be using for this combat. It seemed specially designed to be deadly to Glacians. One end of the staff had a curved spade which could be lit on fire. The other end of the staff had a nozzle which could spit fire. In essence, it was a flamethrower.

After promising not to take on his wolf form, the Duel to the Death began.

Frostheart was clearly more skilled with the ceremonial staff than Captain Lupinus. In an effort to end the Duel quickly, he charged, thrusting continuously with the flaming spade end of the staff. Talbot backpedaled, staying just out of range, parrying with his own staff when necessary. Suddenly, Frostheart flipped his staff over, activating his flamethrower. Unprepared for the wide arc of the flamethrower, Captain Lupinus barely avoided the flames by throwing himself to the ground. Still, his black hair was singed by the burst.

Taking advantage of his downed opponent, Frostheart stood over Talbot twirling his staff rapidly above his head to throw off Talbot's timing. Then he brought down the flaming spade end of the staff in an attempt to cut off Captain Lupinus' head. Captain Lupinus rolled to one side, avoiding the strike, and then swept his own staff in a low circular motion. Frostheart was caught off guard by the sweep; he fell squarely on his back. Quickly, Captain Lupinus seized the opportunity to jump to his feet.

As the deadly combat continued, Talbot could hear loud music in his head, like horns blaring continuously in a repeating pattern. He was at a loss to explain why this was happening. The music reminded him of two warriors on an intensely hot planet, fighting to the death with boiling blood and feverish minds.

Simon watched from a distance, standing protectively over Icicle. The Magisterium Magician was ready to use his magic to save Captain Lupinus, if necessary. He knew it was against the rules, but Simon would not just stand by and watch his Captain get killed. Strangely, as he looked at the two combatants from afar, they seemed to be two different people altogether, as if stuntmen were performing the dangerous parts of some choreographed battle. Simon shook his head to clear his mind. The freezing cold must be affecting his eyesight.

Talbot realized that matching strength against strength with Frostheart would only end with his death. He needed another way to win. He needed cunning...shrewdness...guile. Purposely moving slow, Talbot took flaming strike after flaming strike to his body. He was cut and burnt on his shoulder, arm, stomach, and both legs. It had to look real. Talbot even took a partial flamethrower blast, resulting in his back being severely burnt. As Captain Lupinus dropped to his knees in agony, Frostheart twirled his ceremonial staff, preparing to deliver the death blow.

Just at that moment, before Frostheart could strike, Captain Lupinus picked up his staff and thrust the nozzle end into Frostheart's chest. Talbot activated the flamethrower, incinerating the snowman at point blank range. His entire snowy body melted within moments, leaving only a pool of smoking water at Talbot's feet. "Sorry, my friend," Talbot murmured in a low voice. "I may not be a Glacian, but I have a little more experience than you. Rest in Peace."

Captain Lupinus looked at Wintergale. The giant snowwoman stood unmoving. If Glacians felt grief, he could detect none from Wintergale.

Talbot glanced at Simon and Icicle before turning toward the twelve Glacian Kings and Queens. He thrust the ceremonial staff into the snow decisively. The Glacian Royal Family motioned toward Icicle, indicating he was the winner of the Duel. Captain Lupinus bowed and then walked over to Icicle and Simon.

"You're going to be alright, Icicle," Captain Lupinus told his melting Tactical Officer. "It was a painful experience, but I won. Saying you owe me one would be an understatement."

"Thank...you, Captain," Icicle answered in a low voice. He was very weak. Talbot had won just in time. Any longer and the Commonwealth Glacian would have completely melted. "I am in your Debt. As soon as my health is restored, I will return to duty aboard the Black Wolf. Please continue to your destination to deliver humanitarian aid. I will contact you with my Communicator when I am ready. I will be here waiting for the Black Wolf to pick me up."

Talbot nodded as a group of Glacian Snowmen carried Icicle away on a cot. Wintergale walked next to her future Mate. Simon began to use his magic to temporarily heal Captain Lupinus' wounds.

When Talbot and Simon beamed back up to the Black Wolf, they found Hephaestus and Mother Bethany waiting for them in the Transporter Room. Mother Bethany was relieved that Talbot was alright, although she was concerned about his multiple wounds.

"Well?" the tiny bearded Dollfolk Engineer asked in a loud voice. He looked anxious. "Don't keep me in suspense, laddies. What in the name of my Father's Beer Belly happened down there??"

Talbot looked at Simon before responding, who only smiled casually. "Smithy, there was Snow, Fire, Snow, Blood, Snow, Fighting, Snow, Running, Snow, Kings and Queens, and Snow. Did I mention there was Snow? Lots of it. And there was a beautiful Glacian female named Wintergale who became Icicle's Mate. They are going to create Icelings together."

Smithy looked confused. His button eyes twirled around in an unsettling manner. Unconsciously, he held onto the zipper than ran up the length of his body for comfort. "Fighting? Who were you fighting?"

Captain Lupinus thought of Frostheart. He still remembered the look on his snowy face as he activated the staff's flamethrower. "A brave warrior. In order to save Icicle's life, I had no choice but to kill him."

Then Talbot stared into Mother Bethany's blue eyes with all the Love he could muster.

"He Died for Love. Is there Anything Better to Die For in this Life?"

Jared sat staring at his empty glass. He felt terrible. His stomach was in a knot and he had a headache. He could even feel his skin sweating. No matter how much he drank, he couldn't make his condition go away.

A robot wearing a bartender's outfit approached from behind the bar. The robot's movements were clunky, far from smooth and refined. It came to stand directly in front of Jared. With enlarged optical sensors, it leaned forward.

"Would you like more orange juice, Crewman Tillman?"

Jared nodded and pushed his empty glass forward to be refilled. He rested his chin on his elbows. "Fulsome, what am I supposed to do? I've been here for three hours now. And I still can't think of a solution for my dilemma."

Fulsome titled his robot head to a forty five degree angle as he poured Jared some more orange juice. "We are here to understand human behavior. But you perplex us, Crewman Tillman. If you are in love, as you say you are, then why do you feel bad? Does not love for humans mean happiness?"

Jared sipped his orange juice before responding. "Not quite, Fulsome. You see, two people are happy when they both love each other. But when only one person loves another, and that person does not love them back, it causes heartache and despair."

Crewman Tillman's head began to throb. "Yeah, it's a terrible feeling. Trust me."

The robot tried to comprehend Jared's explanation. The expression on the robot's face was one of confusion. Within, one thousand Nanoids argued with each other over exactly what Jared meant. Finally, Fulsome asked another question to learn more.

"Why doesn't the other love you back? That is non-sensical. Don't humans always love one another? To become companions for life?"

"Not always," Jared said in a depressed voice. He drank a little more of his orange juice. "You see, I love Athena. You know, the leader of the Wolf Pack. The problem is, she doesn't love me back. In fact, she thinks I'm some kind of joke. Maybe it's true. After all, I'm just a lowly Crewman who cleans conduits and assemblies all day."

Fulsome thought about everything he has learned about humans so far. He added some more orange juice to Jared's glass. "Did you tell Athena how you feel Crewman Tillman? Maybe she does not know how strongly you love her."

Jared felt the knot in his stomach tightening. He recalled the last conversation he had with Athena in the Training Center. "Oh, she knows, Fulsome. When I told her that I loved her, and asked her to go out with me, she laughed. Really loud. Then she said she might break me."

Now Fulsome was really confused. One human expressed their affection for another, but the response they received was humiliating. That is non-sensical.

"Don't forget, Fulsome," Jared added. "Athena is not human. She's an Acryan. They are born for War. War is all they know their entire life." Jared continued to drink his orange juice hoping it would settle his stomach.

Fulsome smiled widely. The thousand Nanoids inside the robot all came to the same conclusion. The robot clapped its hands together joyfully.

"Then that's the answer, Crewman Tillman! Don't you see? If all Acryans know is War, if all they respect and crave is War, then that is the way to gain her affection. Do you understand what I am saying?"

"Crewman Tillman, you have to become WAR."

Jared spit out some of his orange juice. He coughed for several minutes. Jared has never hurt a fly in his whole life. In fact, the slightest pain made him cry out loud. But he loved Athena with all of his heart. She was all he could think about. At all hours, even in the dead of night. Then suddenly, he accepted his fate.

Jared slammed his glass down on the bar in a vicious manner. He had an intense look in his eyes.

"Fulsome, you're Right! In order to win her heart, I have to learn to Fight. I have to join the Wolf Pack to prove myself to Athena!!"

Jared stood up confidently from his bar stool. He started to feel better. He would get Athena to love him or die trying. Jared thanked Fulsome and then charged out of the bar heading directly for the Training Center.

The thousand Nanoids that controlled the robot named Fulsome made a note about human behavior.

Love isn't always mutual for humans. When the person you love doesn't love you back. that person feels physically sick and psychologically wounded. They are unable to function in life. even for basic tasks. But love can be an excellent motivator. Love can make a person do something they would never do, such as turning a timid, harmless human into a violent, athletic killing machine.

Fulsome smiled at having learned something new about humans. After all, that was why the thousand Nanoids agreed to serve on board the Black Wolf. Then the robot rushed off to serve other crewmen who were waiting for their drinks.

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 07.11.19 SUPPLEMENTAL

Jared Tillman gasped for breath. As he pushed his body harder than he ever has before, Jared's thoughts replayed the events that led up to this point. Jared had fallen in love with Athena, the leader of the Wolf Pack. After a conversation with Fulsome, the Black Wolf's Bartender, Jared decided to join the Wolf Pack. He intended to prove himself to Athena. Jared met with Captain Lupinus, determined to get his approval to join the Wolf Pack. To Jared's surprise, Captain Lupinus said he knew exactly how he felt, and quickly approved the transfer. Now, here he was, on a barren planet, dying under the harsh whip of a drill sergeant with no mercy.

What was I thinking??

There were four new Wolfpack recruits, including Jared. The drill sergeant was a short furry creature who resembled a humanoid wolverine. To the recruits, he was either "Sir" or "Sarge." The other three Wolfpack recruits were Lena, a Clone from Inertia, Paton, a Panzan Metaloid, and Glea, a female Cyclopean.

In every exercise, Jared had come in last. He was simply not an athletic individual. Sure, he had passed Basic Training at Commonwealth Academy, but that was nothing compared to this. This training seemed more like...torture.

Pushups. Jared's arms felt like lead. Situps. Jared felt like he had a spear through his abdomen. Pullups. Jared's shoulders nearly fell off. Running with a heavy backpack. Jared's legs nearly gave out from under him. His feet were on fire. The whole time, Sarge was right beside them, yelling in their ear, telling them they weren't good enough.

Athena watched from afar.

Jared looked up at the rope that dangled before him. It was attached to a tree so large, Jared could barely see the leaves on its branches.

"What are you waiting for, Tillman? Your mother to carry you? Get up that rope. NOW!!"

Jared jumped forward, grabbing the rope with both hands. Straining, he pulled himself up. Looking up the tree, he doubted he could make it to the top. Lena and Glea were already halfway up their ropes. But Jared had to prove himself to Athena. He imagined her soft touch. Although his hands were burning, he continued to put one hand above the other. He would make it to the top or die in the attempt.

Athena watched from afar.

A black lake with serpentine creatures swimming in it. These watery snakes were the size of dogs. Their task was to swim to the other side. Lena, Paton, and Glea jumped into the water. Jared hesitated because of the snakes.

"What's wrong, Tillman? You afraid of getting bitten? The Wolfpack doesn't fear ANYTHING. Maybe you don't have what it takes to become one of us?!?"

Intent to prove the Sarge wrong, Jared dived straight into the black water. He didn't care anymore if he was killed by the snakes. He just had one task, and that was to reach the other side. He would keep swimming until he made it or drowned trying.

Athena watched from afar.

Body toughening. Lena was beat severely by Paton, Glea, and Jared. Over and over, she was struck, until her body was bruised, beaten, and bloody. Her goal was to survive, to stay conscious, and to keep fighting if possible. Then it was Paton's turn. And then Glea's. Finally, it was Jared's turn.

Lena's fist slammed into Jared's jaw. Paton's foot struck his stomach, knocking the wind out of him. Glea's elbow sliced into his temple, drawing blood. Jared felt his vision go dark. He struggled to remain conscious. No, I refuse to black out! I refuse to fall! He imagined Athena's cool lips kissing him. I won't give up!!

Athena watched from afar.

After being allowed to receive medical attention, the Wolfpack recruits were given a few hours to sleep. All of them quickly entered the land of dreams, where ghostly forms caressed and soothed them. They were each exhausted beyond belief.

Athena stood over her new recruits, watching them sleep. In particular, her four eyes rested on Jared. A huge black wolf emerged from the darkness to stand next to her.

"Why do you allow him to continue? He will never gain your affection. And he might kill himself in the process."

"Because, Captain Lupinus," Athena answered, her voice almost sympathetic.

"We should all be given the right to become MORE than we currently are. If he desires to be one of my Wolfpack, no matter his reason for doing so, it is not my place to stop him. But striving to reach a goal, and attaining it, are two different things."

"Whether he Gives Up...is up to HIM."

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 07.15.19

Link to previous Black Wolf Journals

The Black Wolf arrived at Armia-2 without delay. Armia-2 was essential to the Commonwealth because of its wood resources. The planet's unique resonance allowed the trees to grow at an exponential rate, resulting in Armia-2 being overgrown with forests. To take advantage of this fact, the Commonwealth quickly established a Wood Harvesting Operation on Armia-2. This Operation eventually became known as the "Lumber Mill."

Now, the Lumber Mill was in trouble. A strange creature native to Armia-2 was killing the men harvesting the wood. The entire operation has been brought to a halt because of the killings. The Black Wolf has been ordered to investigate. Getting the Wood Harvesting Operation running again is top priority.

Captain Lupinus, Mother Bethany, Simon, Doctor Bumble, and Security Officers Underwood, Dietrich, Waters, and Hansen formed the Landing Party.

"Tell me," Captain Lupinus asked Warren, the Chief Director of the Lumber Mill. "What is this creature like?" Captain Lupinus had a stern look on his face. He knew the importance of the Lumber Mill to the Commonwealth. His shoulder length black hair was combed and his goatee neatly trimmed. He was a handsome, fit figure.

Warren was a portly, short man, with brown hair. His clothing implied that he was a hard worker, despite his position, and that he didn't mind getting his hands dirty. He stared at Talbot, wondering if the Black Wolf would be able to resolve his dilemma.

"It's some kind of bird. I've never seen anything like it. It's big, well over twelve feet tall. But the odd thing about it is that it can move through the trees like some kind of monkey. When it hides, it's as quiet as a spider. The thing's got a beak as sharp as an axe. Cut one of my men clean in half with a single bite. We tried to hit it with phasers, but the blasted thing's too fast! I've already lost thirteen workers to this beast. So, are you guys going to be able to kill it?"

"We will if we have to," Captain Lupinus replied to reassure Warren. "Rest assured that, one way or another, we will get the Lumber Mill running again."

"Warren," Mother Bethany said in a soft voice. Her blue eyes glowed brightly for a moment. Mother Bethany's pure white robes stood out in stark contrast to the dark grey office the conversation was taking place in. "Was anything done to antagonize this creature? You say you have never seen it before. Did any of your men encounter it before the killings began? Perhaps there was an incident that sparked the animal's bloodlust."

"None that I'm aware of, maam," Warren responded. Mother Bethany reached out with her powers to see if the Chief Director was lying. He was not. She also sensed that he was unused to having women around. Especially beautiful women. Mother Bethany's presence made him feel uneasy.

"Talbot," Mother Bethany said, attempting to alleviate the situation. "I think we should examine the locations where the workers were killed. I might be able to pick up some psychic residue that could be helpful. If there are any lingering memories in the area, it might reveal important details about the creature."

"Yes, I agree, Mother Bethany," Talbot answered, sensing that Mother Bethany had a reason for requesting to leave. "Let's have a look at the places where the men died. The geographical locations might also tell us something, maybe this thing has a hunting ground of some sort. Warren, if you please?"

Warren nodded towards Captain Lupinus and started to move toward the door to lead them to the locations where his men died. That was when Talbot noticed Simon holding a peculiar object.

"Chief Director, may I ask you a question?" Simon said, staring at a curious white orb. The Magician's purple robes dragged slightly on the floor. The blue magical symbols on the robe flashed with energy. "What type of element is this? As your specialty is wood, this strange globe seems foreign to your Operation. Are there more of them?"

Warren seemed annoyed at the question. He was anxious to go to catch the creature killing his men. "They're worthless. We started finding them as we tore down the trees. A whole bunch of them. So many they cluttered up our work area and stalled our progress. So I ordered my men to throw them in the grinder."

"Thank you, Chief Director," Simon said, examining the white orb closely. "May I keep this one for further study?"

"Sure, go ahead. Can we go now?"

As the Landing Party prepared to leave, they heard a terrible scream. It was Hansen. He had been ordered to keep watch right outside the office building. At a full sprint, Captain Lupinus and the others raced outside.

All that was left of Hansen was his burning red security shirt. He had been incinerated.

Captain Lupinus turned toward Warren. His enlarged eyes were full of anger.

"YOU DIDN'T TELL ME THIS CREATURE COULD BREATHE FIRE!!"

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 07.16.19

Link to previous Black Wolf Journals

A surge of rage swelled up within Captain Lupinus' Soul. Hansen was a good man. A man with a wife and children. Now there wasn't even anything left of him to bury. He had been burnt to a crisp by a giant bird-like creature that could breathe fire.

Without Talbot even realizing it, his eyes turned from black to yellow. The transformation demanded a release.

"Dietrich," Captain Lupinus ordered with fire in his voice. "Scout out west of the office. Do not engage the creature directly. Call us on your Communicator the moment you spot the beast. If it attacks you, retreat and run back here. Do you understand?"

Dietrich nodded and then moved toward the west with Phaser in hand.

"Underwood, the same for you," Captain Lupinus continued in a rushed tone. He wanted to catch the creature before it got away. "Except you head east. Stay in contact and do not fight the monster alone. Understood?"

"Yes, Captain!" Underwood replied. Then he ran off to the east with his Phaser ready.

"Mother Bethany, Simon, Doctor Bumble, you stay here for your own safety. Bethany, try to pick up any psychic traces that Hansen might have left prior to dying. Simon, use your magic to learn anything you can about the creature. Waters, you stay here and guard the three of them. Stay alert at all times. Any questions?"

Mother Bethany, Simon, Doctor Bumble, and Security Officer Waters shook their heads, indicating they understood the instructions. Bethany looked worried about Captain Lupinus. She read his mind and knew what he was about to do.

"I'll be back soon," Captain Lupinus said as black hair grew all over his body. He hunched forward so he could begin walking on all four legs. His body tripled in size, growing into a massive beast.

Talbot hated to transform into his wolf form in front of Warren, the Chief Director of the Lumber Mill. But he had no choice. Time was of the essence. As a Black Wolf, he could use his enhanced sense of smell to track the bird creature. Assuming it remained on land, that is.

Besides, it was well known throughout the sector that Captain Lupinus had the ability to transform into a giant black wolf. This ability was obviously the inspiration for the name of their starship. Talbot was sure that Warren was aware of it as well.

Warren watched Captain Lupinus transform into a huge wolf with shock. He had never seen such a thing. Fear gripped his Soul and his body became paralyzed momentarily. The stern Captain he was just conversing with had become a giant monster capable of killing him with a single bite. Instinctively, Warren took several steps backward, moving behind Security Officer Waters.

The huge black wolf let out a howl toward the sky. Then he turned and stared at Warren with his yellow eyes. Warren felt a chill go down his spine. He gave a look to Mother Bethany, stating that he loved her with all his heart. Then the black wolf charged off into the forest at full speed.

Dietrich was the most experienced Security Officer in the Landing Party. He had nearly twelve years of knowledge and wisdom. Sadly, they did not help him. Dietrich didn't notice the large bird creature that stalked him silently in the tree tops. And he didn't even see it when its razor sharp beak separated his head from his body.

Talbot tracked the creature to a forest glade before the trail went cold. The creature either flew away or took to the trees. Frustrated, Captain Lupinus transformed into his half-form, a type of Werewolf. He yelled at the top of his lungs, his arms outstretched in a challenging posture.

"COME FACE ME, CREATURE!!! OR DO YOU ONLY KILL PREY THAT IS WEAKER THAN YOU?!??"

Off to the east, Security Officer Underwood carefully navigated through the dense brush. He was startled by movement to his right, so he instinctively fired his Phaser. A small animal resembling a rabbit hopped away. Underwood wiped his brow and sighed in relief.

Then the tree next to him split in half. Underwood looked up and stared at the giant bird looming over him. The creature resembled an ostrich, but was immensely larger with a long curved beak. It was covered in green feathers, something which provided natural camouflage in the trees. Underwood immediately noticed how quiet the beast was, its every movement barely made any noise. The monster locked eyes with Underwood. There was Hate in its Soul. But Underwood didn't understand why.

Remembering Captain Lupinus' orders, Underwood turned and began running back toward the office. For cover, he fired his Phaser in a wide burst toward the bird like creature. His blast would not hit the target, for the giant bird was no longer there. Like a madman, Underwood sprinted as fast as his legs would carry him. He thought of his girlfriend back on Colony Theta. Underwood was so in love with her. In fact, he planned to propose to her the next time he saw her. After a string of girlfriends, he had finally found the right one. Underwood wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

Suddenly, Underwood saw his right arm fly off into the bushes. Blood began spraying everywhere. To Underwood's surprise, he felt nothing, perhaps because of the excitement of the moment. A second bite took off his other arm, resulting in even more blood shooting out from Underwood's body. Underwood would have been dead from blood loss within seconds, but he didn't even live that long.

A stream of intense flame hit his face, instantly melting his whole head into slag.

Underwood's body slumped to the ground, both arms and head missing, with his red shirt still covering his bloody torso.

CODEX ICHABORN
DESIGNER'S NOTES
PROJECT-Y DEVELOPMENT
STARDATE 07.16.19

Link to Project-Y
Link to the Project-Y Map Version 1.0

Work continues on Project-Y, with a focus on creating the SSD's. Project-Y employs a Design Paradigm that matches the Early Years. Note that per (YFD1.0, 2.0) most (not all) Early Years Drones were Type-I Drones which scored Half-Damage. Some Early Years empires were limited to Plasma Bolts until their Plasma Torpedoes were fully developed.

The Commonwealth Heavy Cruiser will be similar to the Federation YCA but with Scatterguns replacing Photon Torpedoes. Scatterguns are a Range-of-Effect Weapon reminiscent of the Phaser. I just need to double-check the damage chart to make sure it is in line with the Early Years Photon Torpedo and Disruptor. The Old Commonwealth SSD also needs a new outline, one which is unique and recognizable. Like all Early Years ships, the Commonwealth will use PH-2's as their main Phaser. Note that the Black Wolf is an Advanced Prototype of the Commonwealth Heavy Cruiser.

The Cyclopeans feature Modular Starships with Customizable Components. This will take the form of the Iridani's Modules or Pods used on a Tug (or both). The Cyclopeans are Master Inventors. Alone, they create technology far advanced for its time. As a group, Cyclopeans can create Wonder Weapons/Technology, items of Great Power and Destruction. This means that for Group Projects, Cyclopean Modular Starships will somehow connect together to form a Larger Starship, one built for a specific purpose in mind. Many of the Cyclopean Starships are One-Time Vessels or Prototypes; they were never meant to be Mass-Produced or Duplicated. Instead of PH-2's, Cyclopean Starships will use a type of Lightning Emitter. The Cyclopeans are not warlike and do not field a fleet to conquer other empires. Instead, they use starships for exploration and innovation, to examine the underlying threads that make up the galaxy from a unique perspective.

The Sidhe use Starships with an Organic Hull. For the SSD, this will take the form of a Pool of Points that will be distributed every turn for various Abilities. For inspiration, I will look to the Branthodon's Vital Abilities or the Bolosco's Tractor Functions. Defensively, the Organic Hull may even use something similar to the Souldra's Soul Shields (meaning assigned at the beginning of every turn). The Sidhe will be one of the most difficult empires in Project-Y to Balance. Many battles will need to be fought with the Playtest Results carefully examined.

The Realm of Night lays Darkness in space like the Tholians lay Web. Through this Darkness, the Realm of Night can launch powerful Plasmas, utilize Limited Teleportation, gain Enhanced Defenses, and fire Darkness Phasers. As you can see, where the Web is mainly Defensive in function, the Darkness employed by the Realm of Night is more Offensive. In fact, the Realm of Night is an aggressive empire that is constantly seeking to conquer and expand. Again, the Realm of Night will require much Playtesting in order to reach a state of Balance with the other Project-Y empires.

The Insecta Imperium uses Spittle Guns, Adhesive Hull, and Swarm Drones. Spittle Guns are multi-fire weapons, Adhesive Hull absorbs multiple Hull hits, and Swarm Drones are tiny drones that overwhelm the target's defenses.

The Magesterium employs Magic on their Starships. Their technology remains to be developed. Whatever it turns out to be, it must have a Tactical Purpose.

The Inertians are primarily concerned with Self-Preservation. To this end, their starships possess Powerful Defenses, even Cloaking Technology to remain hidden. Their offensive capability is limited, as the Inertians try to stay away from conflict as much as possible.

The Blind Gazers use Organic Ships that have Extremely Advanced Sensory Abilities. They can see Cloaked Vessels, uses Labs to Identify Seeking Weapons at an Advanced Level, Detect Pseudo Plasmas, and More. Their Special Sensors function on a much Higher Level than standard Special Sensors. Not being interested in fighting, the Gazers do not have much offensive capabilities. I may not even give them Heavy Weapons, given their Background and Intent.

The Quatch are short furry humanoids with immense strength. But what are their Starships like?

The Thofen Trimada use Specialized Combat Maneuvers and the Plasma Strafe. They will have fragile starships which are fast and highly maneuverable.

The Drebbel Mariners sink into Subspace and then rise again to launch their Torpedoes.

The Grex Slavers are armed with Fragmentation Drones and Battle Blades. Battle Blades are close range weapons similar to Fusion Beams. They can combine their damage in a manner resembling the Ymatrian's Antiproton Lance. Fragmentation Drones are large drones (bigger than a Type-I) that split apart into Smaller Drones at a certain range (R1, R2, or R3) from the target. Each one is like a self-contained Scatterpack.

And what of the Gitxl, A.I. Spawn, Nanoids, Ichor, Wildlings, Barbary Corsairs, Hellguard, Panzans, Talos, and the Dollfolk Vikings? What about the Minor Empires (Chloris Gardens, Glacian Ice Peaks, etc.) yet to be added to the Project-Y Map in Version 2.0? What about the ominous Gargant Titans? What about the ever-explanding, ever-evolving, INDOMITUS??

The Space Force, Comet, Bolus, Deslon, and Astro League will be deleted from Project-Y. These empires were based on other commercial entities. I believe I can create more inventive and unique empires for Project-Y on my own. But I will keep one element which I think is too cool to discard: Starships flying around space disguised as Comets.

BLACK WOLF - COMMONWEALTH JOURNAL
STARDATE 07.17.19

Link to previous Black Wolf Journals

Mother Bethany let out a scream so loud the Black Wolf could hear it in orbit.

The Bird Creature had emerged from the forest and was approaching the Landing Party. Step by step, the gigantic monster moved forward, studying the area carefully for any traps. Bravely, Security Officer Waters jumped forward, intent to protect Mother Bethany, Simon, Doctor Bumble, and Warren, the Chief Director of the Lumbermill. Quickly, Waters pointed his Phaser at the beast and fired.

Somehow anticipating that Security Officer Waters was about to fire, the Bird Creature jumped high into the air a split second before the ray of deadly energy was about to hit it. Surprised, Waters looked upward just in time to see the monster's humongous foot descending on his head. With a loud crash, the Bird Creature landed directly on Security Officer Waters, crushing him to death. Afterward, a piece of Water's red shirt was stuck to the beast's foot, so it quickly tore the clothing off with its razor sharp beak.

At the sight of Security Officer Water's sudden death, Mother Bethany let out another blood-curdling scream.

Suddenly, a Black Wolf charged out of the forest, running at full speed. Captain Lupinus jumped at the Bird Creature, tearing at its throat as he crashed into it. The Giant Bird bit back at Captain Lupinus with its ultra sharp beak, but the Black Wolf's ancient magikal warding protected him. Like an ancient Earth Monster Movie, the huge Black Wolf fought with the giant Bird Creature in front of Mother Bethany, Simon, Doctor Bumble, and Warren.

Then, to everyone's surprise, a second Bird Creature sprang out of the forest from the east side. This monster seemed protective of the first creature, moving quickly to help it in combat against Captain Lupinus. The next few moments were savage, as the two Bird Creatures snapped at Talbot over and over with their deadly beaks. Even with his magikal protection, Talbot was driven backward. Desperately, he clawed and bit back at the two Monstrous Birds.

"Simon!" Mother Bethany yelled. She was full of fear that something would happen to Talbot, the man she loved. "We have to do something!!"

"I am," Simon replied coolly. The magician had both hands on the white orb he had obtained from Warren. He muttered ancient incantations while moving his hands in specific patterns to activate a spell. With widened eyes, he suddenly realized the truth.

"Quickly, Mother Bethany," Simon said, turning toward his First Officer. "You must read my mind to expedite matters. You will know what to do after that."

Trusting Simon implicitly, Mother Bethany did as her Science Officer asked. Her eyes glowed bright as her mind joined with his. Then she knew the truth as well.

Quickly, Mother Bethany ran toward Talbot and the two Bird Creatures. She stood in-between the combatants, risking her life in the process. Her small, fragile form was in complete contrast to the two Giant Birds and the Huge Black Wolf. Yet defiant she stood, confident that she was doing the right thing. Her long white robe blew wildly in the wind.

Mother Bethany reached out with her mind, hoping that the two Bird Creatures were intelligent. As she suspected, they both were. In order to immediately put a halt to their attack, Mother Bethany informed them of what she and Simon had discovered.

WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE WHITE ORBS ARE YOUR BABIES!!!
