Davy Jones stared at the image of a pretty young woman on his monitor. She was a Dove Humanoid with Red Hair and Pink Eyes. Captain Jones let out an unusual murmuring noise from underneath the tentacles on his face.
"Trina...my Love...my Sweet Love...I MISS YOU So. Not a day goes by, when I don't think of you. I wonder, are you Dreaming of Me, as well, my Sweet Trina?"
Davy's thoughts drifted to the past, to the day when he first met Trina. There was an instant attraction. They each knew the other was the person they were supposed to spend the rest of their life with. They spent the summer together, never separating, always together. Neither one of them could stand to be without the other. Each of them felt a burning pain in their chest when the other person was missing.
Davy and Trina were young with their whole lives ahead of them. They often spoke of their Dreams with each other. Trina wanted to become a Teacher. She loved children. Davy had plans to join the ORDER OF THE DRAGON, if his application was accepted. Davy's background had to be thoroughly investigated prior to approval. The slightest incompatibility in his past would result in his application being rejected.
To Davy's surprise, the ORDER OF THE DRAGON notified him that he was accepted. He was to be begin training at Military Camp immediately. Davy dreaded what would have to come next.
Trina broke down in tears when Davy informed her that he had to leave her. Not just to go to Military Camp, but to end their relationship permanantly. Trina begged Davy to stay with her, to forge a life together with her. She spoke of their future family and of having children. She professed how much she loved him. But Davy would not change his mind. With Trina weeping on her knees, Davy left the building and closed the door behind him.
You see, Davy Jones realized the Committment required to become an Officer in the ORDER OF THE DRAGON. He knew there would no room for a personal life, much less a love life. It simply would not have been fair to the other person. No, the Committment to the ORDER OF THE DRAGON must be Complete and Absolute. Nothing must be allowed to interfere. Duty must ALWAYS come before Love.
Imagine what could have happened if Davy Jones had stayed with Trina. An Enemy would have discovered this vulnerability. They surely would have kidnapped or threatened Trina in order to manipulate Captain Jones. And, in that case, Davy Jones would have had to make the most difficult decision of his life. He would have had to SACRIFICE Trina for the ORDER OF THE DRAGON. He would have had to Betray the Deep Love he felt for Trina in his Soul. He would have had to put a Dagger through his own Heart. And that was something he could NEVER DO.
So Davy Jones left Trina, his One True Love, and Resigned himself to a LIFE OF MISERY...for the Rest of his Days.

Norman you might want to look at the custom design system from Star Fleet Times #1 and #2.

By Norman Dizon (Ichaborn) on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 - 01:11 pm: Edit

Thanks Nick. I'll take a look at those. I have all the SFT compiled in a big folder (somewhere).

The more I think of my own "BPV" System, the more I am not looking forward to doing it. It's bad enough to count every single box on an SSD in order to get a Total Internals Count (which I now provide on all my SSD's), but to add to that, the fact that each box now has a different numerical amount that must be added up separately is not inspiring. Actually, it sounds very tedious and time consuming.

So does the end goal justify the work required? I don't know. I suppose that I just want accurate, consistent numbers for each ship with a solid underlying system for calculations. But as I said before, just adding up system values might not give a true representation of what a starship can do. So I doubt this system will come into being.

It's far easier to look at a CA, compare it to the FED CA, and say, ok, BPV=120.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 - 06:43 pm: Edit

Regarding BPV, you can't simply add up all the point values of each system. The whole is not just the sum of the parts.

Let's say you deploy a fleet-wide refit that includes a pair of rear-arc Ph-3. Let's say that the CA already has a pair of Ph-1 and a pair or Ph-3 that can fire aft. Let's say the CL hase a pair of Ph-1 but no Ph-3 that fire aft. Let's say the DD has a pair of Ph-3 but no Ph-1, and the FF has no aft-firing phasers at all.

How much is that Ph-3 upgrade worth to each ship?? Pulling numbers out of thin air (because I don't know what the "official" ADB numbers are), they might add one point to the CA, two to the CL and the DD, and perhaps four points to the FF.

Likewise, if you're building the base-model ship, when you count things like HULL or CARGO, the first few might be worth two points apiece, then one point for the next few, and then a half-point for any above that. For example, 16 HULL might be 5x2 + 5x1 + 6x1/2 = 18 points (again, made-up numbers). One TRANS or TRAC might be worth, say, six points, a second worth four, and any beyond that two points each.

If you want to know the real ADB numbers, you'd probably have to buy ADB from SVC or bribe SPP ... and I think you'd have better luck buying ADB.

Thanks Garth. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I know ships cannot just be counted up by their boxes, and yet there has been a lingering notion in the back of my mind to try.

I suppose what I am looking for is something that does not, and cannot exist: A singular formula that accurately describes a ship as a single number that works consistently across the board for every ship of every empire. Oh well, one can dream, right?

p.s.) I finally found your e-mail from 5/28! I was searching for "Getzen" instead of "Getgen." Guess I learned how to spell your last name properly. Sorry about missing it. The e-mail must have somehow fell through the cracks!

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 - 11:07 pm: Edit

Maybe you were thinking of Richard Eitzen ......

For what it's worth, I do have distant cousins who spell their name "Getchen". I'm pretty sure we can all trace back to my Great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather (seven-greats) who, in 1692, moved into what is now western Germany and bought a Mill, but we have no idea where he was born. He had ten children. My six-great-grandfather also had ten children. My five-great-grandfather land in America in 1753 in Philadelphia.

"AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!"
Captain Jones and Alexandra stared with faces made of stone. Behind them stood twenty-four Security Guards in Red Shirts. Captain Jones and Alexandra wore their official all-black uniforms.
The Prime Minister clutched the area where his right foot used to be. His face was contorted into a grimace of pain. A single Phaser blast had disintegrated his right foot instantaneously. Surprisingly, blood was not gushing out of the wound.
The crowd of one thousand citizens gasped from the stadium seats where they watched the spectacle.
"Prime Minister," Captain Jones said in a loud, persuasive voice. "It is hopeless to resist the ORDER OF THE DRAGON. Your space forces have been destroyed. Your ground defenses have been overwhelmed. We now have complete control of your city. Other cities around your planet are falling as we speak. Only one thing remains. The Codes to your Master Computer System. Give them to me and I will end your pain."
The Prime Minister stared at Captain Jones with eyes of hate. He struggled to speak.
"n.....n.......n.......e......e......v.......v........v......e.......e......e.....r.....r.......r.....r....!!"
Captain Jones sighed. A swishing sound came from underneath the mass of tentacles on his face. The tentacles moved about wildly, like a mad, living creature.
"Number One, are the Pattern Enhancers in place?"
"Yes, Captain," Alexandra answered. There was no emotion on her beautiful face. Her blue eyes shot forward like razor sharp blades.
"Very well. Transport the Prime Minister's Liver up to the Domitian."
After a buzzing sound and a flash of light, the Prime Minister collapsed to the ground, convulsing in pain. His mouth began to foam. The crowd screamed. Many of the children covered their eyes.
Captain Jones walked over to the Prime Minister, flanked by Alexandra. He knelt down and spoke to the Prime Minister in a low voice that only he could hear.
"Your courage is admirable, Prime Minister. But misplaced. Do you see everyone in the stadium? Each of them will suffer the same fate unless you give me the Codes. Do you really want all of their lives on your conscience? Shall I fetch your Family? Will your Wife be as resilient as you? Will your Sons? Will your Daughters? Shall I force you to watch while they Suffer? Give me the Codes and I will Spare Them. I will also End your Pain. You have No Choice, Prime Minister. Do What MUST Be Done."
The Prime Minister nodded. He mumbled the Codes to Captain Jones, fighting to hold back the intense pain he was feeling. Quickly, Captain Jones used his Communicator to speak with his Chief Engineer, who was waiting to input the Codes. The Chief Engineer confirmed that the Codes worked. The ORDER OF THE DRAGON now had complete control of the Media, Schools, Businesses, Weapons, Defenses, Military, Food Production, Supply Distribution, Communication, Libraries, Transportation, Power, Entertainment, and More.
"You will go to THE PLACE OF ETERNAL SUFFERING for this!!!!" the Prime Minister spat out with his last bits of strength.
Davy Jones stared at the pathetic man writhing in agony at his feet. An unusual gurgling noise emanated from his tentacles. He let out a sinister laugh.
"THE PLACE OF ETERNAL SUFFERING?" Captain Jones repeated with amusement. "Dear Sir, how can you send me there when I am ALREADY HERE??"
The Prime Minister stared at Captain Jones with bulging eyes of disbelief. He truly was dealing with MONSTERS.
Captain Jones turned around and proceeded to the location where his Chief Engineer was. Before he left, Captain Jones nodded at Alexandra, his tentacles flared out menacingly.
Alexandra took out her Phaser and aimed it at the Prime Minister. There was no mercy in her eyes, no compassion, no sympathy. She pulled the trigger.
And in the next instant, the pathetic, groveling being that used to be the Prime Minister...Ceased to Exist.

THE BURNSIDE TERRITORIES
Link to the Burnside Territories

The Burnside Territories are named after the Space Pioneer who discovered them. This derivative galaxy is dedicated to Ken Burnside.
In my opinion (and there are those who disagree with me, that is perfectly fine), there are several factors that limit how much Module C5: The Magellanic Cloud is played. They are:

1) The Inner / Outer Shields
2) The Sensors / Scanners
3) The Volley Reduction Factor
4) The Warp Tuned Lasers
5) The BANK System
6) Strange Species that are Difficult to Relate To (based on Familiarity with Species from TOS)
7) The History and Geographic Layout of the LMC (meaning the Map)
8) The Different Range Brackets employed by Empires of the LMC

However, despite these factors, I believe there is a lot of Potential for Magnificent, Tactical SFB Games based on LMC Technology.
It is the Goal of the Burnside Territories, therefore, to Extract these Useful Technologies and overlay them onto an Alpha Sector Template. This will make the Empires of the Burnside Territories more approachable, more familiar, much easier to balance against Alpha Sector Empires, and ultimately, More Playable.
In particular, the Burnside Territories will make use of the following LMC Technologies (which I believe have Great Tactical Potential):

1) Mass Driver Missiles
2) Plasma-E Torpedoes
3) Distortion Generators
4) Charged Particle Accelerators
5) Variable Focus Neutron Beams
6) Tachyon Beams
7) Positron Lancets
8) Boson Drills

Each of these Technologies will have to be carefully examined for Play Balance (comparative to the Alpha Sector) and Modified Accordingly. This is no simple task. Yet it is essential if the Burnside Territories are to be Functional.
There will be opportunities for New Technologies to be created that Enhance an Empire's Tactics. I have no problem doing this as long as the Development of the New Technology Makes Sense and Improves the Empire's Tactical Game.
The Limiting Factors mentioned above will be discarded in the Burnside Territories and replaced with a more Alpha Sector Approach. Many would argue that the unique LMC flavor will be lost by doing this. I would say they are partially correct (for not all the flavor would be lost), but that what is Gained in the Bargain is Far More Important (Tactical Playability, Player Approachability, and Alpha Sector Balance).
The Initial SSD Designs are Critical, because they will form the basis for Future SSD's for that Empire. It must be possible (and natural) for these SSD's to evolve into Multiple Ship Types, Fast Ships, Dreadnoughts, Battleships, Carriers, Tenders, Base Stations, Starbases, Early Years, X-Technology, and More. In other words, the SSD is not just a One-Time Design, but rather, the Foundation for What Is To Come.

THE BURNSIDE TERRITORIES

(BTR1.1) HEAVY CRUISER (CA): The Owlian Heavy Cruiser was a sleek, fast predator known for its tenacious ferocity. Armed with Four Neutron Beams, Two Mass Drivers, and a Wide Variety of Phasers, the Owlian Heavy Cruiser was best at keeping constant pressure against enemy vessels. Its wide firing arcs favored angular approaches to combat. The Owlian Heavy Cruiser came with an ample supply of energy and powerful shields. But the most distinguishing trait of the Owlian Heavy Cruiser was its extreme maneuverability, a trait that it used to maximum effect on the battlefield.

VARIABLE FOCUS NEUTRON BEAM ANALYSIS
Link to the Burnside Territories

These are My Opinions regarding the Neutron Beam. Your Opinion may be Different, and that is Perfectly Fine. This Analysis was done with the specific intent to Optimize the Burnside Territories.
As always, Direct-Fire Weapons should be compared to the Photon and the Disruptor, while paying careful attention to the 2:1 Damage to Energy Ratio. The same holds true for the Neutron Beam.
Immediately, you see something odd going on with the Damage to Energy Ratio. For 5 Points of Energy, the Wide Neutron Beam yields from 2-12 Points of Damage at Ranges 1-12. There is no specific 10 Points of Damage, but instead 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12.
For 5 Points of Energy, the Narrow Neutron Beam yields from 6-12 Points of Damage at Ranges 1-12. Again, this is odd because there is no specific 10 Points of Damage. The Damage listed is either clearly Below 2:1 (in the case of 6 Points of Damage, almost 1:1) or clearly Above 2:1 (in the case of 12 Points of Damage, which is 2 Points higher than 10 Points of Damage).
I find this Very Strange. For 5 Points of Damage, on Average, you are getting either 4, 8, or 12 Points of Damage (Wide) or 6 or 12 Points of Damage (Narrow). This means you get either Close to 1:1 (on a Bad/Mediocre Roll) or you get slightly above 2:1 (on a Good Roll).
So Why would you choose Wide or Narrow to begin with? Well, the Wide Neutron Beam guarantees More of a Hit (like a Phaser), while the Narrow Neutron Beam provides More Damage for a Greater Chance to Miss. Is this particularly Advantageous (to be able to choose one or the other)? I would say Slightly, but Not Really.
What stands out in both Wide and Narrow Mode for the Neutron Beam is the Damage at Longer Ranges. At Ranges 13-30, the Wide Neutron Beam can score 2-6 Points of Damage on a Roll of 1-5. At Ranges 13-30, the Narrow Neutron Beam can score 4-6 Points of Damage on a Roll of 1-3. This is distinctly better than the Disruptor, which hits from 1-4, 1-3, and 1-2 at Ranges 13-30, scoring from 2-3 Points of Damage. Of course, the Photon hits for 8 Points of Damage at Ranges 13-30, but only hits on a Roll of 1. So it appears the Neutron Beam is best used at distance, which is questionable tactically, for how long will it be before the enemy closes in on you?
In terms of Overloads, the Neutron Beam is lacking when compared to the Photon. The Neutron Beam can generate at most 12 Points of Damage at Close Range, while the Overloaded Photon can generate up to 16 Points of Damage. The Neutron Beam's 12 Points of Damage is comparable to the Overloaded Disruptor's 10 Points of Damage at Close Range, but the Disruptor fires more often.
Which brings up to the Cooling Period required by the Neutron Beam. Since the Neutron Beam must be Cooled for 1 Turn after Firing, it is actually a Two-Turn Weapon. This means it should be comparable to the Photon in Energy, Damage, To-Hit, and Ratio. The Neutron Beam falls short in this aspect, although it does have a better To-Hit Chance over the Photon. With a Two-Turn Cycle, the Neutron Beam is clearly inferior to the Disruptor (which can potentially generate 20 Points of Damage at Close Range versus the Neutron Beam's 12 Points of Damage at Close Range).
Clearly, the Main Advantage of the Neutron Beam over the Photon and Disruptor is the ability to Choose the Mode (Wide or Narrow) at the Moment of Firing. But is this ability really worth the trade-off in terms of other deficiencies?
For the Burnside Territories, the First Thing I did was change the Range Brackets to make them more compatible with the Alpha Sector. This means that 5-8 is the Main Overload Range and should be respected as such. The old Neutron Beam Chart would have had players firing at Range 12 or Range 6 instead. This difference in Ranges changes Tactics drastically.
One of the main problems that I see with the Neutron Beam is that you are basically Always Firing an Overloaded Shot. I base this on the fact that the Neutron Beam requires a whopping 5 Points of Energy to fire each time. An Overloaded Disruptor costs 4 Points of Energy. An Overloaded Photon costs 8 Points of Energy (at max). A Standard Disruptor costs 2 Points of Energy. A Standard Photon costs 4 Points of Energy. So the 5 Points of Energy required by the Neutron Beam is clearly in the Overload Bracket.
The question for the Player becomes, what if I don't want to spend that much Energy to Fire? Consider that 4 Neutron Beams costs a Titanic 20 Points of Energy to fire during a single turn. This is tremendous. There is no alternative, you either pay for it or you don't fire them all.
So one thing I would like to change about the Neutron Beam is the Ability to Fire at a Lower Cost. But this could potentially require Additional Damage Charts, which cannot happen because there are already Two Charts (Wide and Narrow). Perhaps one solution is to Revise the Two Charts for a Downgraded Firing (Lower Energy) and then simply state that Overloaded will yield Double the Amount. At least that way, the Player can choose between a Standard and Overload Shot (and therefore control their Energy Spendage better).
The Strange 1:1 and 2:1 Ratio of the Neutron Beam might also need Revising and the Increased Damage at Long Range. I'm not sure if the Higher Damage at Long Range can potentially be Abused by a Clever Player, but the Possibility is there. If I stated that a weapon requires 5 Points of Energy (which is questionable by itself), then for certain, somewhere in the Damage Table I would have 10 Points of Damage (2:1 Ratio) listed. This is not the case with the Neutron Beam. There is No 10 Points of Damage listed in either the Wide or Narrow Charts.
And so, in my Opinion, we have an Odd Weapon from the LMC with Great Tactical Potential. It most certainly will need to be Revised (in More Ways than One) to be Playable, Tactically Interesting, and Fun. I'm sure that when the Neutron Beam was originally developed, it was done so in comparison against other LMC Empires, which makes sense. Unfortunately, that Design won't work for the Burnside Territories, which are slanted more toward an Alpha Sector Design Paradigm.
More on the Neutron Beam Revision when I create Version 2.0 of the Owlian Heavy Cruiser.

Alexandra kissed the President passionately. Her deep blue eyes gazed into his Soul. She let out a faint moan of approval. Her long black hair dangled to her hips.
The President was an old man, nearing retirement, with a Wife and Seven Children. But it didn't matter. His loins were burning for Alexandra. And he meant to have her.
Alexandra let her hands wander randomly, exciting the President more than he could handle. His mind ceased to work properly. Nothing else in the world seemed to matter, only this moment, right now, with Alexandra.
They were in one of the President's Private Chambers on Alpha Humari Three. The two nestled on a huge bed, both of them almost completely naked. The double doors leading into the Private Chamber were locked to prevent intrusion.
Alexandra let the President do as he wished. She leaned close and licked his ear. The President shuddered with delight.
"Oh! I've found your weakness, Mister President!! Haven't I? Well, I can't stop now, can I?"
Alexandra continued focusing on the President's Ear, causing him to squirm chaotically. The President began to make loud groaning noises.
"Mister President, remember how you told me that Alpha Humari Three is protected by an Impregnable Defense Field?" Alexandra asked as she continued her motions without stopping. "Tell me, My Love, How is it Deactivated?"
The President struggled to answer. It was difficult, because his mind was only focused on his ear and the pleasure he was experiencing. He had forgotten completely about his Wife and Children.
"There is a...Special Key...that must be inserted...into the...Defense Console. A Key...that only...I have."
"I see," Alexandra said, running her hand lower and lower. "And, My Love, where is this Special Key? You can tell me. I'm you're Mistress now, remember? We are going to be So Happy together from now on. You won't even have to leave your wife to see me. I'll always be there for you. Now, tell me, Where do you keep the Key?"
The President was helpless in Alexandra's arms, a piece of putty for her to mold as she wished. And the truth was that he enjoyed being in this powerless position.
"It's...in...a...Secret Compartment...behind...the Mirror. Pull...the Mirror....downward....and...the...Secret Compartment...will....open...."
Suddenly, a Poisoned Dagger stabbed deep into the President's Back, piercing his Vital Organs. Alexandra drove the Poisoned Dagger upward and into the President's Heart. His eyes grew cold as his body shook with tremors. The last thing the President saw was Alexandra's deep blue eyes staring at him with a Look of Hate.
"You Old Fool," Alexandra hissed at the Corpse in front of her. "History may try to blame me for seducing you, but the truth is, you Deserved your Fate. You Betrayed your Family for a Reckless Moment of Passion. Pathetic!" Alexandra spit on the President's Dead Body.
Then Alexandra walked over to the Mirror and opened the Secret Compartment. She reached in and grabbed the Special Key. Alexandra took her Communicator from the dresser and contacted the Domitian on a Secure Channel.
"Yes, I have it. The Defense Field will be down within moments. Have all the Invasion Parties on Standby, ready to beam down. We need to take their Command Center first, that will leave their Military in disarray. The Domitian is to begin Bombardment of the Surface from Space the moment the Defense Field goes down. I will be beaming up as soon as I ensure the Command Center is occupied and controlled by the ORDER OF THE DRAGON."
Alexandra took one last look at the President's Dead Body as she was getting dressed. She felt No Regret, No Sorrow, and No Sympathy.
"SO EASY. ALWAYS HIT THE ENEMY WHERE THEY ARE MOST VULNERABLE. ONE OF THE FIRST LESSONS TAUGHT BY ORDER OF THE DRAGON."

“PLEASE DON’T TAKE MY SONS!!!”
Alexandra stared at the Old Woman begging on her hands and knees in front of her. It was a pathetic sight. To be so weak you are completely at the mercy of your conquerors.
Eldridge was one of countless villages on the world of Gorin-2. The ORDER OF THE DRAGON conquered Gorin-2 over a year ago. Now, Slaves and Raw Recruits were harvested from Gorin-2 regularly as the mandatory tribute to the ORDER OF THE DRAGON.
In this case, one 18 Year Old Son and one 16 Year Old Son of the Old Woman pleading with Alexandra. A squad of ten Red Shirt Security Guards stood behind Alexandra with their Phasers ready.
The Old Woman was crying uncontrollably. “Please, my Sons are all that I have left. Their Father died five years ago. If you take them, I will be empty inside. Please…Show Mercy!”
Alexandra stared at the Old Woman with her cold blue eyes. A wicked grin formed on Number One’s pretty face.
“Very well. The ORDER OF THE DRAGON is not without Compassion, as many would believe. I will, therefore, give you a Choice. You may keep One of your Sons. The Other Son will serve the ORDER OF THE DRAGON for the rest of his life. You will Never see him again. Now…CHOOSE.”
The 16 Year Old Son turned and looked at the 18 Year Old Son. One would be Enslaved Forever while the other would keep their Mom company until she Passed from this Life.
The Old Woman looked desperately at both of her boys. Tears streamed down her face. “But…but…I Can’t Choose! It would break my heart!! How can I pick One over the Other? What am I supposed to do??”
“Think quickly,” Alexandra stated as her patience began to wear thin. “Before I change my mind. It is not every day that the ORDER OF THE DRAGON shows leniency. Now pick One of your Sons, or I will take them BOTH.”
Distraught, the Old Woman’s body began to shake. Her quivering hand motioned toward her 18 Year Old Son and then to her 16 Year Old Son and then to her 18 Year Old Son and then to her 16 Year Old Son. Her Heart twisted in on itself. She let out a terrible moan. “I CAN’T!!!”
The 18 Year Old Son knew that the 16 Year Old Son was her favorite. He had been spoiled from the beginning, constantly given lighter chores and responsibilities. There was no way the 16 Year Old Son was ready for the ORDER OF THE DRAGON. No, it must be the 18 Year Old Son who went. That is what their Father would have wanted.
“It’s alright, Mom,” the 18 Year Old Son said in a loud, reassuring voice. “I’ll be the one to go. Have no regrets about this, because it was my choice. I Love You So Much. NEVER FORGET.”
The Old Woman nodded as tears streamed down her face. Alexandra gave the order to release the 16 Year Old Son back to the Old Woman. The two hugged tightly, knowing they would be alone with each other from now on.
The 18 Year Old Son stood up straight and tall. He stared at Alexandra with a fierce look of Hatred.
Alexandra and her Security Guards marched with the 18 Year Old Son toward the Beam Up Location.
Excellent! I have never tasted anything So Sweet!! Forcing the Old Woman to make that choice hurt her more than anything else. For if we took Both of her Sons against her will, it was not her fault and there was nothing she could do to stop it. But by making her choose one or the other, she will now have to live with the memory that she terribly Betrayed One of her Sons. It was All Her Fault. Even though the Son volunteered, it makes no difference. The Old Woman will Blame Herself until her Dying Day. I have represented the ORDER OF THE DRAGON well today.
FOR IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE ORDER OF THE DRAGON TO BREAK THE WILL OF EACH AND EVERY SUBJECT WHO IS TRAPPED UNDERNEATH ITS HEEL.

PROJECT-X DESIGNER'S NOTES

Project-X began as an Experiment. The original idea was to see if I could create a New Galaxy based solely on Cadet Sized Ships. However, Project-X soon took on a new life of its own, growing in ways that even I didn't expect. Now, Project-X is a galaxy full of limitless tactics and possibilities.
The First Change I came up with was Brand New Phasers. I contemplated getting rid of the Standard Phasers (PH-1, PH-2, PH-3) that I originally intended to use and wondered: what if I created my own set of New Phasers? These New Phasers, which started with the PH-V, and expanded into the PH-VI, PH-VII, PH-VIII, PH-IX, PH-X, and More, would enable the Cadet Sized Ships to be able to fight effectively from mid-range. Their Range Brackets were much different from the PH-2 and PH-3, with damage stretched further out.
Instead of using standard Heavy Weapons, like the Photon and Disruptor, as I originally intended, I decided to create my own New Heavy Weapons. This allowed me to incorporate New Features, such as a Double Overload. But the most important change to the New Heavy Weapons is a Subtle One. Instead of a 2:1 Damage to Energy Ratio, my New Heavy Weapons for Project-X would be Slightly Disproportionate in Ratio, allowing for a little bit More Damage for Each Point of Energy. For example, the Republic's Kinetic Torpedo requires 2 Points to Arm as Standard. Yet Standard scores 5 Points of Damage. Overload requires 3 Points of Arm, but yields 7 Points of Damage. Double Overload requires 4 Points to Arm, but scores 10 Points of Damage. It takes a Sharp Eye to notice this Hidden Change in Project-X.
In Project-X (and a few other Genesis Galaxies), the Rule is that EVERY POINT OF DAMAGE IS ESSENTIAL TO WIN IN COMBAT. While you can argue this is true with Regular Alpha Sector Ships, it is even More True when your ship is Cadet Sized with only 44 Internals (such as the Republic First Cruiser) with Shields ranging from 6-12 Boxes. Now, when that Point of Damage hits your ship, it REALLY Matters. This is one reason why Mid-Range Combat is Normalized within Project-X. When you are able to hit the enemy ship with Phasers from Mid-Range and score even a Point or Two of Damage to his Shields, you have already Reduced Them Significantly. In a standard Alpha Sector battle between Two Heavy Cruisers, that 1-2 Points of Damage from Mid-Range is really inconsequential (mostly because your Shields range from 24-30) in the grand scheme of the combat.
One of the Primary Changes made to make Project-X different from Standard Cadet Ships was to make all the ships "FIRST CRUISERS", meaning they were first of their kind exploring space and therefore, were VERY LOW TECH. This is Extremely Important. With this Design Philosophy, it was decided that All Phasers in the First Era would NOT have a Capacitor. Points must be allocated directly to each Phaser during Energy Allocation and then used accordingly. It is Essential to note as well that First Cruisers are NOT Early Years Cruisers, nor are they simply Alpha Sector Frigates or Cadet Ships. First Cruisers are their own Unique Entity, different from anything else that has come before.
Which brings up the Next Critical Component of Project-X. It is another Extremely Subtle Design Element. The First Cruiser SSD's that have thus been created so far Only Comprise the FIRST ERA of Project-X. The keen observer will deduce that there must be Future Era's in Project-X. This is absolutely Correct. Project-X encompasses TEN ERA's, of which the FIRST ERA is Only the Beginning. Starting with Extremely Low Tech, the Many Era's of Project-X will move through many Advances in Technology and Ship Design, culminating with X-Technology (the NINTH ERA) and X2-Technology (the TENTH ERA). These Advanced Era's will No Longer be Cadet Sized Ships, but would indeed be Standard SFB Sized Ships or Larger. This makes the FIRST ERA Extremely Important, because it sets the Foundation for so much more to come.
Another Very Subtle Design Characteristic of Project-X is that the Galaxy is Full of Major and Minor Empires. This is Very Important to the Background of Each Empire (and ultimately to their Ship Designs). The Minor Empires are Too Weak to stand up to the Major Empires. This means that they will have several choices given the state of the Galaxy. They can Join the Major Empires, they can look for Protection from the Major Empires, they can Wage War against the Major Empires, they can form Alliances with the Major Empires, they can Trade with the Major Empires, they can provide Resources to the Major Empires, and so on, and so on. This Diverse Interaction between the Minor Empires and Major Empires provides a Unique and Interesting Spice to Project-X, making it very curious, tantalizing, dynamic, and imaginative. Some Minor Empires will flat out be destroyed utterly, while other Minor Empires will grow and prosper, mostly under the guidance of the Major Empires. The Major Empires within Project-X are, of course, similar to the Federation, Klingons, Kzinti's, Gorns, and More.
Truthfully, I could spend ALL of My Energy and Time on Project-X Alone, because there is That Much to the Galaxy. It is Rich with Possibilities and Ideas. Sadly, I was only able to devote a portion of my time to it (since 2016), as I had many other New Galaxies to work on at the same time. Now, Project-X joins Regenesisgalaxies.com in the Pre-Regenesis Section. It's time to expand Project-X even further...

(PXR1.1) REPUBLIC FIRST CRUISER (FCA):

Link to other Pre-Regenesis Material

The mainstay of the Republic Fleet in its very early formative years. At the time, the Republic First Cruiser was a formidable ship, able to withstand a significant amount of punishment and more than capable of defending itself. The Kinetic Torpedoes were the pride of the Republic during this era, capable of knocking down an enemy vessel's shield with one strike. The Republic First Cruiser's Phaser-V's firing arcs were also noteworthy; the ship could bring five Phaser-V's to bear at a forward oblique angle. The Republic First Cruiser had enough warp and impulse to both move during battle and keep its weapons fully armed. The Republic commissioned many variants of the First Cruiser, each designed for a specific role. History would show that some of these variants were successful, while others were not.

Link to the Sylvan Heavy Cruiser SSD

I decided to leave the Sylvan's Boomerang Torpedoes as is. The Sylvan was originally intended to be slightly more powerful than the average Heavy Cruiser due to being a part of the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems (which has Hundreds of Thousands of Galaxies as Members). Some empires within the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems will be Weaker than the Average Cruiser, and some empires will be Stronger. It doesn't make sense to streamline them ALL to be exactly like the Alpha Sector. There must be Variance due to the Sheer Number of Member Galaxies in the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems.

So how do you Balance the Sylvan for SFB Combat? There are Two Ways.

The First Way is to simply use BPV. Look at the Sylvan CA BPV and use that as you would any other SFB Ship.

The Second Way (which I Prefer) is to use the Lower Data Box on the SSD. This Lower Data Box provides information such as Total Internals, Total Power, Maximum Alpha Strike, Number of Shields, etc. This important information about the ship will give you a clear picture as to what kind of opponent it should be facing. Of course, the Heavy Weapons require careful scrutiny to match them up against equivalent opponents...

REVISED NEUTRON BEAMS DESIGNER NOTES
OWLIAN HEAVY CRUISER VERSION 2.0

I decided that the best way to balance the Neutron Beams against the Alpha Sector was to cut the charts in half, providing a one-turn downloaded ability. For overloads, the damage charts would simply be doubled.
This will solve several things at once. First of all, it allows the player of the Owlian CA to use a lower amount of power for the Neutron Beams, rather than being forced to use the full 5 points of power like the original Magellanic rules state. Flexibility in power usage is very important for every battle.
Secondly, it allowed me to revise the damage charts where necessary. There were some oddities that I noticed about the original damage charts that struck me as strange. One main item that I revised was the Range Brackets. They now match Alpha Sector Overload Ranges.
Third, the Revised Neutron Beam can now fire either every turn or every two turns. You can look at this as a two turn weapon that now has a downgraded option, or you can look at it as a one turn weapon that can be overloaded by waiting two turns. The result is the same. A quick fire one turn weapon on par with the Disruptor, or a two turn weapon that is comparable to the Photon.
There were some strange things going on with the Narrow Neutron Beam Chart at Ranges 1-4 and 5-8. At both of these Ranges, the Max Damage (Double the Energy required to Arm) is indicated. However, when you compare this to the Disruptor at Range 5-8, you find the Disruptor is causing significantly Less Damage (either as Standard or Overloaded). While the Photon remains consistent with Damage (8-16) at these Ranges (1-8), the Photon's To-Hit is much Worse than the Revised Neutron Beam. If it were me, I would have laid out the Neutron Beam's Damage Distribution a bit differently on the Damage Charts, but that is how Ken originally laid them out, so I tried to stay true to that original vision as much as possible.
In comparison to the Photon and the Disruptor, I thought that it was Too Advantageous for the Neutron Beam to be able to always choose between a Phaser-like Chart and a Hit-or-Miss Chart each time it was fired. So I considered adding an Additional Point of Energy to pay for this advantage over the Photon and the Disruptor. However, upon examining the Damage-to-Energy Ratio, I decided against adding this Additional Point of Energy. The Neutron Beam simply has the Advantage of Choosing its Mode, whereas the Photon and the Disruptor Do Not. That will have to be That.
So the Revised Neutron Beam requires 3 Points of Energy to Arm during a Single Turn. Those 3 Points of Energy can yield from 1-6 Points of Damage on Wide Mode and from 2-6 Points of Damage on Narrow Mode. This 2:1 Damage to Energy Ratio is on par with the Alpha Sector. For 6 Points of Energy (3 Points on the First Turn and 3 Points on the Second Turn), the Revised Neutron Beam can be "Overloaded", allowing it to score from 2-12 Points of Damage on Wide Mode and from 4-12 Points of Damage on Narrow Mode. Again, this 2:1 Damage Ratio matches the Alpha Sector, making the "Overload" comparable. It should be noted that while a Max Overloaded Photon requires 4+4 Points of Energy and can score 16 Points of Damage, an "Overloaded" Revised Neutron Beam requires 3+3 Points of Energy and can score 12 Points of Damage. This Ratio of 12:16 or 6:8 is Correct.
The Revised Neutron Beam retains the Advantage of being able to choose between a Narrow Mode or a Wide Mode at the moment of firing, whereas the Photon and the Disruptor have no such choice. So, in my opinion, the Neutron Beam still comes out on top, even though the Damage-to-Energy Ratios have been Balanced.
With all the Chart Calculations having been done, it was a simple matter to update the SSD. Here is the Version 2.0 of the Owlian Heavy Cruiser:

KING ALPHA
Link to King Alpha

Long ago, it is said that the King created the Known Galaxy. After an Eternity of Peace and Prosperity, the King suddenly vanished leaving the Known Galaxy to fend for itself. What was once Good quickly fell into Turmoil and Decadence. In time, the King was forgotten, with many saying that the Known Galaxy was created by a Spark of Random Convergence. But the Prophecy states that the King will one day Return...Return to reclaim his Galaxy gone Astray.
King Alpha re-presents Alpha Sector Material in new, intriguing, and tactically focused ways. Heavy Cruisers will possess 32 Warp, 5 Batteries, and a 32-Point #1 Shield. However, one of the prime features of King Alpha is the incorporation of 3 Heavy Weapons/Devices, instead of the standard 2. This will lead to the generation of brand new tactics which must be discovered and tested on the battlefield. While one could argue that the Orions achieve this same objective, it is quite different when a starship is purposely built with specific Heavy Weapons that cannot be changed, as opposed to Optional Weapon Mounts that can be swapped out every battle.
In King Alpha, the PH-1, PH-2, and PH-3 were never developed in the same fashion as the Alpha Sector. Instead, the Phaser Cannon (PH-C) and the Pulse Phaser (PH-P) became the standard. This means that firing as a PH-1 is rare, firing as PH-2's is extremely commonplace, and firing as PH-3's is reserved primarily for seeking weapon defense. This difference means that the Prime Firing Range will change during combat. One huge disadvantage of this design is that the PH-C or PH-P can be destroyed in one stroke, instead of having a whole array of Phasers which take time to each be individually destroyed. Again, this leads to completely different tactical possibilities and outcomes on the tabletop.
King Alpha seeks to create New Empires that are fresh, interesting, and full of potential for storytelling. The development of a detailed and fascinating Historical Timeline is critical to King Alpha. Scenarios will, of course, spring forth from this Historical Timeline to highlight certain key events.
In addition to the many Ship Types used in the Alpha Sector, King Alpha will also incorporate Simulator, Alternate Timeline, Stellar Shadows, and Partial X-Refits into the Ship Designs. The goal here is not to state what is Simulator and what is Real, what is Official and what is Un-Official, what is Playtest and what is Historical, but instead to utilize SFB Rules that Work on the Battlefield, that are Balanced in Design, and that create New Tactical Possibilities. If something is Unbalanced and Breaks the Game, then it will not be used in King Alpha. But if it Works during Gameplay and challenges the player in a New Tactical Ways, then why not incorporate it into King Alpha? Since King Alpha has its own Historical Timeline and Technical Advancements, it is not bound by the typical Alpha Sector Restrictions.
In summary, King Alpha will draw from all kinds of Alpha Sector Material, both Historical and Non-Historical, to create New Empires that promote the utilization of New Tactics. An Intriguing Timeline and Interesting New Empires are essential. While King Alpha can be played against the Alpha Sector, it probably should not, as I suspect that King Alpha would be slightly more powerful due to its Different Design Paradigm.

(KAR1.1) HEAVY CRUISER (CA): The Watcher Heavy Cruiser formed the backbone of the All-Seeing Watchers Fleet. Tasked with a variety of duties, from research to exploration to military engagements to diplomacy and more, the Watcher Heavy Cruiser performed its many functions admirably. Noted for possessing heavy firepower and strong forward shields, the Watcher Heavy Cruiser did possess some glaring weaknesses. Its weak aft shields were often exploited by enemies. Furthermore, the Watcher Heavy Cruiser's maneuverability was reknowned for being slow and ponderous. On a positive note, the Watcher Heavy Cruiser enjoyed plentiful power generation, ample reserve power, and an overabundance of laboratories.

ENFORCER DOMITIAN - STARDATE 08.08.20
Link to Previous Enforcer Domitian Logs

Samuel Arthon grimaced in excruciating pain. He struggled vainly to break free from the bonds holding him tight against the Wheel.
Inside a Private Interrogation Chamber on Colonia-13, Captain Jones paced back and forth in front of his helpless prisoner. The Captain of the Domitian stroked the tentacles hanging from his chin. The tentacles responded like a mass of living snakes. A disturbing murmuring noise could be heard coming from underneath the tentacles.
A few feet away, Alexandra and Six Red Shirt Security Guards stood ready. Alexandra had a wicked smile on her beautiful face. To her, there was nothing sweeter than causing another person to suffer.
“Samuel, Samuel, Samuel,” Captain Jones said in a disappointed voice. “I thought that you would have been smarter than this. We know that you are the Leader of the SONS OF LIBERTY. We have evidence proving that. Now, be reasonable. Cooperate so that your suffering will end.”
“I’d rather be fed to a Flying Rathawk!!” Samuel Arthon spit out defiantly. He strained again to break his bonds without success.
The Man wearing the Black Mask brought down his Two-Handed Hammer onto Samuel’s Right Arm. Samuel screamed loudly as his Right Arm was Broken. The Wheel continued to slowly spin.
Captain Jones grabbed Samuel forcefully by the chin. He forced Samuel to look into his eerie octopus eyes.
“Tell me who the Other Members of the SONS OF LIBERTY are. What is their Secret Hand Gesture? How do you summon them to the Liberty Tree? Where do you get your Weapons from? Who else is helping the SONS OF LIBERTY? How do you plan your Next Target? Where do you get your Information on our Troop Movements? How do you recruit New Members into the SONS OF LIBERTY?”
Samuel Arthon stared with hatred into the eyes of Captain Jones. He was ready to DIE for What He Believed In. “You’ll NEVER Break Me.”
An odd gurgling noise came from Davy Jones’ tentacles. He released Samuel’s chin and looked away.
“Did you really believe that the SONS OF LIBERTY could break the ORDER OF THE DRAGON’s Iron Grip over Colonia-13? Did you really think you could Inspire citizens to mount an Insurrection? Did you truly believe that your foolish Guerrilla Warfare Tactics would amount to anything more than an Annoyance to the ORDER OF THE DRAGON?”
Samuel retorted, “All Beings are endowed by their Creator with Self-Evident RIGHTS.”
The Man wearing the Black Mask brought down his Two-Handed Hammer onto Samuel’s Left Leg. Samuel screamed loudly as his Left Leg was Broken. The Wheel continued to slowly spin.
“What was that?” Captain Jones asked sarcastically. “I couldn’t hear you over your Screams.”
“The RIGHT to FREEDOM OF SPEECH. The RIGHT to FREEDOM OF WORSHIP. The RIGHT to BEAR ARMS.”
The Man wearing the Black Mask brought down his Two-Handed Hammer onto Samuel’s Left Arm. Samuel screamed loudly as his Left Arm was Broken. The Wheel continued to slowly spin.
“The RIGHT to ASSEMBLE. The RIGHT to DUE PROCESS OF LAW. The RIGHT to NO UNREASONABLE SEARCHES OR SEIZURES.”
The Man wearing the Black Mask brought down his Two-Handed Hammer onto Samuel’s Right Leg. Samuel screamed loudly as his Right Leg was Broken. The Wheel continued to slowly spin.
With all of his Limbs Broken, Samuel Arthon struggled to stay conscious. Through blurred vision and a mouth full of blood, he uttered loudly,
“WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!!!!!”
Captain Jones laughed at the Pathetic Man spinning on the Wheel before him. This one was more resilient than the rest, but no matter. In the end, his resistance and spirit were for naught.
“Samuel. You recite the Usual Platitudes that have been rendered Meaningless. Your Supposed Rights are only Privileges granted to you by the Controlling Government. Well, guess what happens when your Government is Crushed and taken over by the ORDER OF THE DRAGON? Yes, it’s True. It is Undeniable. Your RIGHTS VANISH INTO OBLIVION.”
Captain Jones wrapped his tentacles tightly around the top of Samuel Arthon’s Head. Samuel could feel Davy Jones’ Sharp Teeth penetrating his Skull.
“Where is your Creator now, Samuel? Why doesn’t He SAVE You?”
AND THEN DAVY JONES SUCKED OUT SAMUEL ARTHON’S BRAIN.

POSEIDON'S LINE OF BATTLE
Link to Poseidon's Line of Battle

Poseidon's Line of Battle is an Expansion of the Concepts introduced by the Britanian and Hispaniolan Starships. Intrigued by these Sideways-Firing Starships, I envisioned a new galaxy full of empires that designed their fleets in this fashion. However, I didn't want to be limited to a Single Heavy Weapon (Proton, Disruptor) like the Britanian and Hispaniolan. My New Galaxy would utilize Drones, Plasmas, Fighters, Carriers, Maulers, Web, ESG's, and More. Of course, all of the starships employed by my new empires would be quite Real, and Not Simulator.
The main problem to be solved by this New Design Paradigm is how to differentiate the starships in Poseidon's Line of Battle from standard Alpha Sector starships. After all, if I utilize much of the Alpha Sector's weaponry, such as Drones and Plasmas, then regardless of Firing Arcs, what is to stop a Player from flying the Line of Battle Starship like any other Alpha Sector Starship (fly at the enemy, fire weapons at the enemy in FA)? There must be some mechanism in the New Design Paradigm that prevents this, or at the very least, greatly discourages this form of combat.
On a side note, the empires in Poseidon's Line of Battle must also be significantly different from the Iridani, with their Side-Firing Focused Energy Beams, Wide Phasers, and various Modules.
To resolve this primary dilemma, strict Firing Arcs (R, L) would be designated for Seeking Weapons (Drones, Plasmas, etc.) and Heavy Weapons (Photons, Disruptors, etc.). Like the Britanian and the Hispaniolan, the starships of Poseidon's Line of Battle would have Two Sets of Heavy Weapons, one on each side (R and L). Although this will give Line of Battle starships Twice the normal amount of Heavy Weapons, the theory is that they would only be firing one side toward an enemy at any given time. The only exception to this would be Fleet Battles, where a Line of Battle Starship might actually have to opportunity to fire Both Sides of Heavy Weapons in Opposite Directions, if surrounded. Clearly, such a maneuver would require a great deal of Energy, perhaps more than the Line of Battle Starship can muster.
While the initial launch of Seeking Weapons at enemy vessels would require the enemy vessel to be within its Firing Arc (R or L), if the enemy vessel moves out of the initial Firing Arc (R, L), the Seeking Weapon would continue to follow them. So the Major Change to Drones would be the implementation of a strict Firing Arc (R, L) and a more restrictive Firing Arc for Plasmas (R, L, instead of their usual FH, FP, LP, RH). Note that Seeking Weapons in Poseidon's Line of Battle can either be Primary Heavy Weapons or Supplemental Heavy Weapons, since Line of Battle Starships may have Two or More Heavy Weapons plus possibly a Device.
One area of concern arose in regards to HET. Britanian and Hispaniolan starships cannot HET, although Players are encouraged to experiment with the idea. I really wanted the starships in Poseidon's Line of Battle to be able to HET, just like regular Alpha Sector Starships. However, after much thought, I realized that the HET would defeat the purpose of the Side-Firing Weaponry. What was to stop a Player from firing One Side of Heavy Weapons, performing a HET, and then firing the Other Side of Heavy Weapons? The answer is nothing. For this reason, as sad as it may be, Starships in Poseidon's Line of Battle cannot perform HET's.
I did have an idea for a New Maneuver that I wanted to be pervasive throughout Poseidon's Line of Battle. This New Maneuver would allow Line of Battle Starships to bring their Side-Firing Heavy Weapons to bear in a unique way. The New Maneuver, originally called a Drift, would be a Sideslip and Turn Combined. The Line of Battle Starship would first perform a Sideslip and then perform a Turn (in the same hex) after the Sideslip is completed. The Line of Battle Starship must meet both requirements to Sideslip and Turn to be able to initiate this New Maneuver. I will call the New Maneuver a Sideslip-Turn (to keep the Name simple and obvious to Players). For apparent reasons, the Sideslip-Turn Maneuver should be restricted to Poseidon's Line of Battle only.
The Scatterpack became another problem for the Design Paradigm of Poseidon's Line of Battle. The launching of Shuttles allows them to bypass the (R, L) Side-Firing Heavy Weapons normally utilized. To make matters worse, a single Shuttle could then release Six Drones which could hit an enemy Line of Battle Starship in its Weakest Shield (#1 or #4). Such a tactic cannot be allowed to happen in Poseidon's Line of Battle, as it would seriously undermine the Side-Firing Combat being set up by the Design Paradigm. Therefore, much to my regret, Scatterpacks cannot be used in Poseidon's Line of Battle. Perhaps, in the future, I will think up an Alternative to the Scatterpack, something which works functionally and tactically for the Sideways Combat of Poseidon's Line of Battle.
The next decision was a difficult one to make. Due to the Side-Firing Nature of Poseidon's Line of Battle, and the Design Paradigm used to develop it, I didn't want the starships zipping around at Warp 31. It just didn't make sense and it didn't match the feel I wanted to create for this New Galaxy. Therefore, I made the tough decision to give Heavy Cruisers in Poseidon's Line of Battle a Movement Cost of 2. This means that Heavy Cruisers will have a Max Speed of Warp 16, probably much slower if they are arming weapons. So this will slow the game down tremendously as warships inch slowly toward each other on the battlefield. But I feel this is the correct decision, because it creates a Flavor and Atmosphere that matches what I want Poseidon's Line of Battle to be like. It will also ultimately affect and create New Tactics that are needed to succeed with the slower speed.
And that brings us to the most important, yet most challenging aspect of Poseidon's Line of Battle. After doing research into the Real-Life Line of Battle, I found that ships would line up to fire sideways, enabling them to cut down enemy ships before they could close for boarding. This was especially true with concentration of fire. I wanted to duplicate this effect in Poseidon's Line of Battle.
The main challenge here was that at long range, shots were typically scoring anywhere from 1-3 points of damage, something easily blocked with some reinforcement. So long-range sniping has never really been a threat. But I wanted the Sideways Barrage of Line of Battle Starships to be Actual Threat at Long Range, not just an Annoyance. This meant I needed to change Two Things in Poseidon's Line of Battle: Phasers and Heavy Weapons.
The solution to Phasers was what I have dubbed: the Long Range Phaser-1 or PL-1. This type of Phaser scores significantly more damage at Ranges 9-15, 16-25, 26-50, and 51-75. The PL-1 scores No Damage at Ranges less than 9. The PL-1 can fire as a standard PH-1 as well. The Firing Mode for the PL-1 is chosen at the Beginning of the Turn, after Energy Allocation. Once the Firing Mode has been chosen, it cannot be changed during the turn. This gives the opponent a chance to attempt surprise tactics to change the distance during the turn, possibly negating the Long Range Advantage. The PL-1 costs the same amount of energy to fire as a standard PH-1.
It should also be noted that Starships in Poseidon's Line of Battle carry a mixture of PL-1's, PH-1's, and PH-3's. They are not restricted solely to PL-1's. PL-1's line the Sides, PH-1's are Forward and Aft, and PH-3's are spread throughout to defend against Seeking Weapons.
The solution for Heavy Weapons was to give them a Long Range Option. The First Empire in Poseidon's Line of Battle uses Disruptors. So I had to work out the details for what I call the Long Range Disruptor or DISL. The DISL has the option of firing in Long Range Mode, which costs the same amount of energy as being Overloaded. The DISL can then score much more damage at Ranges 9-15, 16-22, and 23-30. The DISL cannot score any damage at Ranges less than 9. Like the PL-1, the decision to fire at Long Range must be declared at the beginning of the turn, after energy allocation, and cannot be changed. Again, this allows the opponent to take advantage of this decision during the turn, if they can.
The explanation for the PL-1 and the DISL can be whatever Technobabble you like. I will write up something in the future about it. Much more important than the Technobabble are the reasons for these changes and whether they work or not on the tabletop.
With Phasers and Heavy Weapons that can score significant damage at Range greater than 9+, the starships in Poseidon's Line of Battle now pose a real threat from a distance. Additionally, when there is an actual Line of Starships, their Combined Fire can genuinely hurt an enemy ship at Long Range. This matches my goal of mimicking the Tactics, Effects, and Strategies used in the Real-Life Line of Battle. Can these Long Range Modifications be abused by Clever Players? Possibly. Solid and Repetitive Playtesting should reveal whether this becomes a reality or not.
Lastly, I thought it made sense for the Line of Battle Starships to have Armor, as a type of 7th Shield. However, I didn't want this Armor to be 360 degrees. Instead, I imagined reinforced protection on the Line of Battle Starships on both of their Sides, where they were most likely to take Heavy Fire. For this reason, Line of Battle Starships feature Left and Right Armor that protect each individual side. If the Right Armor is ruptured, the Left Armor cannot assist to absorb that damage. If the Left Armor is breached, the Right Armor cannot assist to absorb that damage. These Directional Armors made sense to me and fit perfectly with the Design Paradigm of Poseidon's Line of Battle.
Should the Starships of Poseidon's Line of Battle be flown against Alpha Sector Starships? While possible, I would highly discourage that type of game. The Design Paradigm of Poseidon's Line of Battle is so unique and so different, with so many inherent changes made for specific purposes, that its Starships would be Alien to the Starships of the Alpha Sector. Conflicts would be Unbalanced, with Tactics Disrupted by Two Different Design Paradigms that were clashing at once. It is best to leave Poseidon's Line of Battle Starships to fight one another instead of the Alpha Sector.
In summary, Poseidon's Line of Battle features Starships that have been designed to Fire Sideways. Their Side-Firing Weapons are capable of scoring Significant Damage at Mid to Long Range. Seeking Weapons, including Drones and Plasmas, also fire to the Sides. High Energy Turns and Scatterpacks are not available in Poseidon's Line of Battle. Starships in Poseidon's Line of Battle move slowly and feature Reinforced Armor on Both Sides. Line of Battle Starships have Weak #1 and #4 Shields, but Strong #2, #3, #5, and #6 Shields. All Starships in Poseidon's Line of Battle can perform a Unique Maneuver called the Sideslip-Turn, which is not available in any other galaxy.
With the possibility for plenty of Unique Starship Designs and Unusual, Fresh Tactics, the new galaxy known as Poseidon's Line of Battle has a Lot of Potential. There will also be later opportunities to develop X-Technology in Poseidon's Line of Battle, as well as to incorporate Omega and Magellanic Technology. The History and Timeline of the many empires of Poseidon's Line of Battle remains to be written. To the Future, and to discovering more about Poseidon's Line of Battle!!

REUEL – STARDATE 08.18.20
THE BATTLE OF HEAVEN’S GATE

Link to Previous Reuel Chronicles

The Nephilim mounted yet another attempt to penetrate Heaven’s Gate. The All-Seeing Watchers had enough time to summon five of their best Heavies: Cameel, Phanuel, Zephon, Abathar, and, of course, Reuel. The Nephilim attacked with a large fleet composed of Frigates, Destroyers, Light Cruisers, and a couple of Heavy Cruisers. The battle was intense, but the Nephilim had not reckoned with the sheer determination and force of will of the Watchers. Each Watcher Heavy Cruiser took down more than it’s worth, sealing its place in Heaven for everyone aboard. As the Watcher Cruisers fell, one by one, the Nephilim Fleet shrank at an accelerated rate. In the end, only the Reuel remained, along with the Nephilim Heavy Cruiser known as Suruel.
“Damage Report,” Captain Cherub said softly but sternly. The Large Baby with Angelic Wings kept his gaze fixed on the View Screen while he waited patiently for an answer.
“Second Shield down to ten percent,” the Science Officer replied for all to hear. “Fifth Shield is at fifty percent. First Shield is at eighty percent. Third Shield collapsed from the Suruel’s last Battle Run. We’ve lost fifty percent of our Laboratories, one Auxiliary Power Reactor, two Pulse Phasers, one Disruptor Bolt, one Plasma Torpedo, one Probe, half of our Transporters, half of our Hull, two Shuttles, and one quarter of our Warp Engines.”
Captain Cherub took mental note of everything in the damage assessment. There was still hope. This battle could be won. But only if the Reuel played its cards correctly.
“Stay calm, everyone,” Captain Cherub informed the Bridge Crew in a reassuring voice. The Captain flapped his white wings once. “We will get through this. Have Faith. Remember your Training. Continue Damage Control procedures. Rebuild our Damaged Shields. Keep our Healthy Shields toward the Suruel. Recharge Phaser Capacitors. Make sure the Suruel is chasing us, but keep us within 80,000 Kilometers.”
The Egg-Shaped Cruiser with Six Wings stayed its course, purposely keeping its strong Aft Shield toward its pursuer. The Suruel, a Dark Angel of Death, sped after the Reuel intent on devouring it outright.
Medium Phasers pounded the Reuel’s Aft Shields. The Egg-Shaped Vessel shook from the onslaught.
“Stay focused, my good friends,” Captain Cherub stated with a smile. “We can withstand their angry blasts. They are only trying to frighten us into surrendering. That is something we will Never do.”
The Large Baby put his pudgy hand on the Control Buttons of his Command Chair. “Chief Engineer, did you prepare a Wild Weasel as I requested? Is the Suicide Shuttle fully charged? Is Reserve Power back to maximum?”
“Aye,” the Chief Engineer responded through the Intercom. “The Wild Weasel and Suicide Shuttle are ready ta go. But I need more time ta give ya full Reserve Power.”
Captain Cherub formed a sympathetic expression on his Baby Face. “I’m sorry, but there is no more time. In the next few moments, the Suruel will breach our Aft Shield, causing untold devastation. We cannot allow that to happen. I need full Reserve Power NOW. Prepare to execute a High Energy Turn.”
“Aye,” the Chief Engineer said with a heavy sigh. The Intercom closed.
Captain Cherub watched the Suruel closing from behind. Why did it have to be like this? They are Family. We should not be at War. This was all Wrong. Yet they chose to Disobey the Laws. And that Defiance came with Consequences.
“Navigator, slow to Warp Factor One. Rotate the Reuel so that our Fifth Shield is facing the Suruel.”
Captain Cherub turned his head slightly to address his Navigator. “Overload Both Photon Torpedoes. Overload Disruptor Bolt. Wait for my Command. Be Patient.”
“Scatterpack incoming!!” the Navigator yelled with excitement. A huge ball of Red Energy followed behind the Six Incoming Drones. “The Suruel has launched their Heavy Plasma as well!”
Phaser Cannons and Pulse Cannons continued to rock the Reuel. Particle Cannons fired repeatedly, hammering the Reuel mercilessly. The Fifth Shield dropped to ten percent.
“Now! Launch the Wild Weasel. Prepare to High Energy Turn on my Command.”
A small Shuttle emerged from the Reuel. Instantly, the pack of Six Drones and Heavy Plasma Torpedo were drawn toward this New Target. They impacted on the Shuttle, creating a huge explosion so bright it could have been a Miniature Star.
The Reuel could sense the Suruel’s frustration. The Suruel began to turn away to recharge its weapons.
“Execute High Energy Turn!! Keep our undamaged Sixth Shield toward the Suruel. Attach a Tractor Beam. Hold Them Fast!!!”
The Large Baby with Wings was hovering above his seat. His wide eyes watched the View Screen without blinking.
The Suruel struggled to break free like a Wild Beast attempting to escape a Metal Trap clamped around his leg. A loud whirring sound could be heard as their engines strained.
“Divert all Reserve Power to the Tractor Beam. Do not allow them to escape!!”
Captain Cherub watched the helpless Nephilim Starship caught in his grasp. His heart ached with what he was about to do. Yet he must carry out the Will of the Most High, whether he liked it or not. His Brothers aboard the Suruel had to pay for their Disobedience.
“Launch the Suicide Shuttle. Launch our remaining Plasma Torpedo. Fire Overloaded Photons and our last Overloaded Disruptor Bolt. Fire all remaining Phaser Cannons and Pulse Phasers. This ends NOW.”
The crew of the Suruel screamed out in agony as their Heavy Cruiser exploded into a Red Inferno. Captain Cherub closed his eyes and said a Prayer for their Lost Souls.
“Heaven’s Gate is Secure. We have done our Duty. But the Price we paid is High. I am very Proud of All of You. You are my Family. You are my Friends. I am Honored to be your Captain.”
Captain Cherub landed in his Command Chair once more. He closed his eyes to communicate with the Most High. A Powerful Voice echoed in his Mind.
“YOU HAVE SERVED ME WELL, MY SON. BUT YOUR TRIBULATIONS ARE FAR FROM OVER...”

ENFORCER DOMITIAN - STARDATE 08.18.20
Link to Previous Enforcer Domitian Logs

“Class, today we have a Guest Teacher.”
The children in the classroom on Boron-2 looked up at the beautiful black-haired woman who came to visit their class. Her name was Alexandra. She was from the Enforcer Starship Domitian. Boron-2 was conquered by the ORDER OF THE DRAGON six months ago. It was Alexandra’s task to make sure the next generation was being properly taught.
“Class, tell me, what is your Purpose in Life?” Alexandra asked in a loud voice. She paced slowly up and down the aisles as she spoke. Her arms were folded behind her back.
“To Serve the ORDER OF THE DRAGON!” the children replied with enthusiasm.
“Very good. And what about your Parents?”
“They gave Birth to us, but they No Longer Control our Lives!”
“I see. And what is Morality?”
“Fake Rules about Life that were created by the Weak, for the Weak!”
“Your Teacher has taught you well. Are you Individuals?”
“No, we are Not Individuals. We are Part of a Collective, a Group.”
“And what is that Group?”
“THE ORDER OF THE DRAGON.”
“And what if the ORDER OF THE DRAGON demands that you Give Up your Life?”
“Then we DIE for the ORDER OF THE DRAGON!”
“What about Compassion, Helping Others, and Being Kind?”
“Those are the Ways of the Weak. NEVER Do That, unless you are Faking It to achieve a Goal.”
“Children, is it Appropriate to Lie?”
“If it serves the ORDER OF THE DRAGON, Yes. We should Never Deceive the ORDER OF THE DRAGON in any way.”
“Who Provides for You, Teaches You, Cares for You, and Worries about You?”
“THE ORDER OF THE DRAGON!”
“Who is your TRUE FAMILY Now?”
“THE ORDER OF THE DRAGON!”
“And what do we do with Non-Believers, Doubters, Traitors, and Those Outside of the ORDER OF THE DRAGON?”
“We Punish, Torture, Manipulate, and Kill Them!”
“What should you do if someone tries to persuade you to Leave or Betray the ORDER OF THE DRAGON?”
“Inform a Superior in the ORDER OF THE DRAGON Immediately!”
“Is there such a thing as FREEDOM?”
“No, that is an Illusion made up by the Weak.”
“Are there such things as RIGHTS?”
“No, that is an Illusion made up by the Weak.”
“Then what Principle Governs All of Reality?”
“POWER. That is All That Matters!”
“And How do you Gain Power?”
“By Faithfully Serving the ORDER OF THE DRAGON!”
Suddenly, a Young Girl at the back of the Class stood up and folded her arms.
“I think you are WRONG!” the Young Girl exclaimed in a loud voice. Shocked, the entire class turned to stare at this Girl.
“My Mom and Dad taught me that you should Treat Your Neighbor as Yourself. That you should Love Everyone Else and treat them with Kindness. That you should feel Compassion for the Unfortunate and Forgive Those who have Wronged You. That you should strive for Justice, Peace, and Liberty. That we are All Equal in Spirit, no matter how we Look on the Outside. That Good Always Triumphs Over Evil.”
The entire class began to laugh loudly at the Girl’s statements. Alexandra smiled wickedly.
“I see,” Alexandra said to the Young Girl. “You are quite Brave. What is your Name?”
“Rebecca,” the Girl answered without Fear.
“Well, Rebecca. Everything your Parents told you is False. They Lied to You. And Now you will be made to Learn the Truth. No matter how Long it takes or how much you Suffer. Take her away!”
Two Red Shirt Security Guards walked over to the Young Girl, grabbed her by the arms, and dragged her out of the Classroom. Rebecca would spend the rest of her days in a RE-EDUCATION CAMP until she accepted the TRUTH.
Alexandra smiled at the Class. “I am pleased with the rest of you. You are on your way to becoming Loyal Servants of the ORDER OF THE DRAGON. Keep Studying. Grow Strong. Obey your Superiors. Never Doubt. Never Question the Ways of the ORDER OF THE DRAGON. Report Anyone Who Does. I will be back in a couple of months to check on your progress.”
Before Alexandra could leave, a Young Boy in the front of the Class blurted out, “I want to be Just Like You when I Grow Up!!”
Alexandra gave the Boy a Hard Stare. There was Pain, Suffering, Sorrow, Misery, Resentment, Anger, Hate, and Death in her beautiful blue eyes.
“CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR, BOY. YOU JUST MIGHT GET IT.”

REUEL – STARDATE 08.20.20
Link to previous Reuel Chronicles

Captain Cherub stared at his tall, pale First Officer. Mr. Gloom was concentrating on the “Chess Board”, a holographic representation of a World. This was Destiny Chess, a strategic game where the Fate of Two Armies was not decided, but rather, the Fate of an Entire World. Captain Cherub and Mr. Gloom often played against each other in the Recreation Hall.
“I fail to see your strategy, Captain,” Mr. Gloom said in a deep, hollow voice. The six foot nine inch tall Necronin had a fish bowl style haircut. He moved his Knight, creating a Fortress on a Hillside. Mr. Gloom sat up straight in his seat while waiting for Captain Cherub to respond.
“Not everything is about Logic and Rationale,” Captain Cherub answered. The Giant Baby with Wings smiled at Mr. Gloom. Mr. Gloom stared back with an unmoving face of stone. Captain Cherub moved a Pawn, creating a Bridge over a Wide River.
“Data, Facts, Evidence, Science, Theories, Results that can be Replicated,” Mr. Gloom stated blandly. He looked over the Holographic World, spinning it around to check certain locations. “These are the things that are important in Life. This is what drives our Technology.”
“True, Mr. Gloom, True,” Captain Cherub countered. “All of that is important. But what about Faith? What about Love? What about the Afterlife? Don’t you have a Soul, Mr. Gloom?”
Mr. Gloom looked at Captain Cherub with a perplexed expression. Well, as perplexed as you can get with barely moving your face.
“Captain, it is true that I was brought back from the Dead. It is also true that I am not really Alive. But a Soul? Afterlife? Faith? Captain, if I didn’t know better, I would think you were trying to…what is the phrase? …ah yes, Joke with me.”
Captain Cherub let out a light giggle. His Bishop took a Pawn, causing a Volcano to erupt. Mr. Gloom used a Queen to take a Rook, creating a Swamp where there was once a Forest. Captain Cherub moved a Pawn forward to create a Castle. Mr. Gloom advanced a Knight, creating a Flock of Birds. Captain Cherub moved his Queen, creating an Earthquake near Mr. Gloom’s King.
“It’s almost over, Mr. Gloom,” Captain Cherub announced in a friendly tone. “I will have you in the next move.”
Mr. Gloom’s dark grey eyes darted around the Holographic World. His Undead Brow wrinkled. How was this possible? I went through every calculation. I planned every move in advance. The Captain should have been defeated by now.
“I Resign.”
Captain Cherub flew out of his seat. He let out a loud laugh as he patted his First Officer on the back.
“Excellent game, as always, my loyal First Officer! Don’t worry. You did nothing wrong. You calculated everything perfectly. The fault does not lie with you.”
Mr. Gloom looked up at his Flying Captain. “Then how did I Lose, Captain?”
“YOU’RE MISSING THAT CORE COMPONENT THAT LIES OUTSIDE OF MATH, SCIENCE, LOGIC, AND REASON. YOU’RE MISSING THE…ESSENCE THAT CANNOT BE MEASURED. UNTIL YOU FIND IT…YOU WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE.”

MITOSIS (WRITTEN IN 2020)
Link to Mitosis
PRE-REGENESIS

Looking back at Mitosis, which was created back in 2016, it looks to be an expansion upon the concepts presented by the Frax. Heavy Weapons are FX and RX. This means they can fire forward (and to the rear), but their main concentration of fire is off to the sides. This leads to interesting tactics. However, going beyond the Frax's weaponry, Mitosis seeks to implement this FX/RX idea into All the Alpha Sector weapons. This would include Drones and Plasmas. Clearly, their launching arcs need to be modified to fit this FX/RX mold.
Curiously, the technology level of Mitosis is similar to the Early Years, where Heavy Weapons do not have Overloads. But unlike the Early Years, Mitosis uses Phaser-1's and Phaser-3's (like General War Alpha Sector) instead of the primary PH-2's employed by the Early Years. This mix of Limited Heavy Weaponry with Modern Phasers helps to make Mitosis unique and fosters the development of new tactics at the same time.
To make things even more interesting, the Heavy Cruisers of Mitosis are the size of War Destroyers. The Average Mitosis Heavy Cruiser will have 16 Warp and a 1/2 Movement Cost. This means a small, fast ship, with less internals and less overall energy. Again, this adds to the uniqueness of Mitosis, presenting a need for players to manage their overall energy differently than an Alpha Sector Heavy Cruiser.
Should Mitosis be played against the Alpha Sector, using War Destroyers or Early Years Ships? I would greatly discourage such play, given the Different and Unique Design Paradigm of Mitosis. The two don't really mesh together well and their styles of combat are contrary to one another.
Overall, I am pleased with the Design Philosophy behind Mitosis. It presents something new, something different, and something fun. There is a lot of room for growth, as the goal for Mitosis is to eventually develop Advanced Technology that will include Overloads, Scatterpacks, and More. The Background and History is rich and intriguing. I will have to devote more time to expanding Mitosis in the future.
Below is what was originally written to describe Mitosis back in 2016:

MITOSIS (WRITTEN IN 2016)

Mitosis takes Alpha Sector Technology and distills it down to its essential elements. Rather than having empires with two-three pieces of technology (like Photon+Drone, Disruptor+Drone, Plasma+Cloak, Disruptor+ESG, etc.), each empire in Mitosis starts out with only one piece of technology (Photon, Disruptor, Drone, Plasma, etc.). This only a beginning. As the Mitosis Timeline moves forward, the empires of Mitosis will discover new technology, incorporate existing technology, and improve on technology already in use.

Heavy Weapons in Mitosis feature FX/RX or FH/RH Firing Arcs. Phaser Firing Arcs compliment this design with many being R/L and some being FA/RA. The goal here is for ships to maneuver and focus fire to the sides instead of forward.

Combat in early Mitosis is simplified. Heavy Weapons do not have Overloads. There are no Scatterpacks. ECM is not available. Shuttles can still be used for Wild Weasels and Suicide Shuttles. Battles are straight forward, quick, and non-cumbersome. In this way, Mitosis is very similar to Omega Design Philosophy (which avoided Drones to speed up Gameplay).

Tactics with the simplified combat and RX/FX firing arcs will be similar to the Alpha Sector, yet different.

Heavy Cruisers in early Mitosis are the size of War Destroyers. With 16 Warp and 1/2 Movement Cost, these Heavy Cruisers will have to choose their Energy Allocation carefully. The smaller size of Mitosis Heavy Cruisers sets the stage for other ship classes such as Dreadnoughts, Command Cruisers, Destroyers, and Frigates.

Empires in Mitosis are named for real Old World regions. These regions existed independently until they faced an unstoppable expanding Empire. The symbol of this famous Empire was the Eagle. We all know what happened next in History. Will it be the same for Mitosis?

BRITTANI HEAVY CRUISER SSD

MITOSIS
PRE-REGENESIS

(MR1.1) BRITTANI HEAVY CRUISER (CA)
The workhorse of the Brittani fleet. The Brittani Heavy Cruiser featured four Photon Torpedoes, four Phaser-1's, and four Phaser-3's. The Brittani Heavy Cruiser possessed limited power, so Brittani captains learned to use that power wisely in battle. Reserve Power was notoriously lacking. Because of the wide firing arcs, the Brittani Heavy Cruiser was able to focus all four Photon Torpedoes to either the port or starboard side of the vessel.
