My opponent has been explicitly talking about wanting to use LO.
But that is a keen observation; I'll make sure he is aboard...

Mike Grafton:
The Third Reload (second reload if you do not have the Y175 refit) is a RELOAD. You cannot swap any of them for other items. Those ADDs are not available to swap for other munitions.

OK. My opponent didn't understand the CO rules, so I just bought stuff up to 150 BPV. Speed 32 drones, a single extra 2 space drone, plus a legendaery Navigator (for the TM & HET benefit).
He spent quite a while before closing in his Lyran and let me saber dance range 4 with my held photons on turn 2 right as my speed change to 28 came in. Ate 3 just as my initial Scatter pack (4 IF and a IV F) arrived to down his ESG. He heavily dented my shield (I guess right where to put the reinforcement). I held my LS Phasers in case he had a speed change to catch me.
I scooted away, he went slow, and safe from overuns I reloaded my photons and crammed more into my second scatterpack. Next engagement was on the other side of the map. he fired first while I fired an OL photon at range 4 (in case one was hit). Penetrated and did minor damage because my second SP arrived at the same time I was getting to range 4 for another pass. I was moving faster. I closed at range 2, Hit with all 3 photons, plus 8 P1 and he conceded.
Note that I never used my Legendary Navigator because I wanted him to be surprised when I got that TM benefit.
In retrospect, I think he hasn't had the benefit of the many CL articles by REALLY good captains who have drummed into me "Speed is Life."
Lots of fun. I predict soon it won't be so easy for me to play my game...
By Mike Grafton (Mike_Grafton) on Wednesday, October 07, 2020 - 07:46 pm: Edit |
Next duel will be Y180, 150 BPV PLUS the 20% Captains Options.
He is choosing a race, but I am thinking about a Klingon.
D5 or the Walkurian? With some ECM drones?
What do YOU think?

What's a Walkurian?
By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Thursday, October 08, 2020 - 04:07 pm: Edit |
Shawn Gordon:
Memory is not what it was, but I believe Walkurian was the name of one of the F6 "Frignauts." It is also the name of one of the Klingon Warrior Colonies. Again, that is from memory and as has been noted, my memory is not anywhere near what it once was.

F6 FRIGATES: 1-Bakurian, 2-Valorian, 3-Sefarian, 4-Walkurian.

Interesting. Why did this ship come to be known by the fourth ship in its class instead of its class abbreviation (CA, D7, DNL, etc) like all others?
By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Thursday, October 08, 2020 - 06:34 pm: Edit |
Shawn Gordon:
It is not. It is known as the F6 class. I think Michael Grafton was just commenting on the name. Otherwise the D5 is known a the "Renegade" class (first ship in the series) and the B10 is the "Invincible" class. Memory is a tricky thing, and Mike Grafton may simply have a certain affection for that ship name associated with that particular F6. Just as I have an affection for D7 Hull #8 "Thunderchild" while "Klodode" is the lead ship of the D7 class.
By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Thursday, October 08, 2020 - 06:44 pm: Edit |
To be clear, the Thunderchild is a ship that exists only in fiction. She stood between the Martian and fleeing refugees in H.G. Wells's novel "The War of the Worlds." She did not win that fight, but she made the Martians pay a price, and in the end the refugee fleet escaped. It is not really clear that she was destroyed in the book, the burning wreck was essentially last described as moving to engage the third Martian machine which was withdrawing into the shallows, but in generally all depictions of the scene in comics and video show her being destroyed, some show it as simply a pathetic attempt at resistance, but the scene in the original text always stayed with me.

SPP,
I would say that the book at least strongly implies that Thunder Child (two words, in the book) was destroyed, though you re right that it doesn't absolutely confirm it.
"She was alive still; the steering gear, it seems, was intact and her engines working. She headed straight for a second Martian, and was within a hundred yards of him when the Heat-Ray came to bear. Then with a violent thud, a blinding flash, her decks, her funnels, leaped upward. The Martian staggered with the violence of her explosion, and in another moment the flaming wreckage, still driving forward with the impetus of its pace, had struck him and crumpled him up like a thing of cardboard. My brother shouted involuntarily. A boiling tumult of steam hid everything again."
And in the book the Thunder Child's resistance, though suicidal in my opinion, was certainly not pathetic or ineffective. She destroyed at least two Martian fighting machines, possibly a third, and enabled the steamer full of refugees to escape.

Yes, Walkurian is a F6. And the CL "class history" has it as having the best story of them all.
Actually the "rest" of the FFB and F6 classes would be interesting.
So that F5G that got converted after it got zorked? FFD converted to a DB ship? etc. I think the CL teased that after the first new builds the rest were conversions of existing ships...
Actually, I wonder if SVC would consider a breif history of one member of the above for a future CL. So a half page on the FFV converted to a FFBV...

Drachinifel has a YouTube video (not sure if I'm allowed to link to it here, but you can find it easily enough) on what the Thunder Child should actually look like, based on H. G. Wells' description and British naval architecture at the time.
The only problem is that he also calls it "Thunderchild" in stead of "Thunder Child". But it's definitely a fun video.

A Walkurian is a Klingon born/raised on Walkuria. They tend to be kinda "wild and wooly" and are the "texans" of the Empire. Socially slightly different than Klingons but genetically identical.

Nice find. Thanks for flagging that BrianK. A somewhat positive call-out of the SFU universe, though ADB seems to be the Rodney Dangerfield of board games.

Good day everyone,
Some of you may remember me from a few years back. I've been a 30+ years SFB player & was active on this discussion board for about ten years. But life got in the way of things and I hadn't posted since about 2011 or so. I'm back and quick data query someone here may be able to answer.
I hope I'm not posting this in an incorrect location but wasn't sure where else to do so. For a campaign I'm starting soon I'm looking for a little info on the Shuttles, Skiffs & PFs and don't have my rule books handy. Can someone please let me know what the approximate length is in US feet or Meters for the following?
* Heavy Transport Shuttle
* Average Civilian Skiff
* Klingon H1 interceptor
* Klingon G1 Gunboat
If I need to specifically post this elsewhere, someone point me there & I'll edit this post & move the question there.
Thanks in advance and good so see some familiar names still here.

I know we printed blueprints of the G1 showing it's length. That would give a guess on the H1. Skiffs and heavy shuttles, no published data and trying to measure the line art is going to require a salt shaker. Garth made some good guesses (nobody including me knows if they are right) and I would say to use his.
By Stewart Frazier (Frazikar3) on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 - 05:21 pm: Edit |
G1 ~ 31 m, H1 ~ 28.4 m (Main body, engines add about a meter to overall length [G1 blueprints in front of me]) ...

Robert,
There is a topic at Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Shapeways Project: Bureau of Starline Statistics for the questions you're asking.
Later when I'm on my own computer (on my wife's computer right now), I'll find the Heavy Shuttle size.
I, too, want to figure out the size of Skiffs.

Played last Sunday nite. My D7C missed 11 out of 14 range 3 ADD shots. And 7 out of 9 at range 2. So i got completely zorked because I had to blow all my phasers shooting drones. So even with decent maneuvering, 2 ADD12 couldn,t kill one SP worth of drones
And I missed a 5 out of 6 narrow salvo to pop the second SP with narrow salvoed disruptors.
So sad.
