Saw the tree- looks like good work to me. Good matchups mostly, fun games to watch.


PS everyone - Seth and I are friends and he is a great player. I do like to talk a little trash though for fun and I know he doesn't mind or I wouldn't do it.

Did anyone not get the tree E-Mail? I sent it to the addresses you all sent in as part of your registration, so it should have gone through (Grahm Cridland had a problem because his E-mail address included his callsign, so an extra copy was sent to him). But I know I sent a copy to Peter Bakija.

This matters because, as those who received it know, it included the schedule.

Got 2 turns in.

T1: I move 15/17/24 (18 moves). Kzinti moves 21/17/9/4. We close up the map some, he slows down to 9 by mid turn. I get to R15 right on my #6/#1 shield spine, and launch enveloper B. I turn off, my plasma closes in. He eventually fires 4 standard disruptors, hitting 4/4 for 12 damage on my #5. By the end of the turn, I turn back sort of in his direction, he weasels the incoming enveloper, avoids collateral, and reactivates AFC that will be on impulse 2 of T2. We end at R10, my #6 facing his #1.

T2: I move 24/12/8. Kzinti moves 9/4, speeding up to 10 on impulse 25 for 26. I turn in and start closing. He launches 3 fast drones as I come in. They get to R1, and I ID them, but roll 2, 2, 1, missing the third drone (which was super inconvenient). The 2 ID'ed drones are both type IV heavies, but I don't know if the 3rd one was. I kill them all with 6xP3 shots. He launches a 4th, medium speed drone as I get closer, which I grab with a tractor, ID successfully (type I), and kill with a rear P1. I close in a little more, hitting R2, just as I slow down to speed 12, and don't move the next impulse. He blasts me with 4xOL and 2xP1, but he misses with 2 of the OLs, scoring 28 damage, all of which sticks to my #6. Next impulse, he preemptively launches a second weasel. I get to R1, luck out, and kill the weasel with a single P1 shot. I get into R0. Right before his weasel protection goes out, he pre-emptively launches his 3rd (and last possible for the turn) weasel. I shoot that one with my last facing P1 at R0, have a 1-4 chance of killing it outright, but roll a 6, so it lives. I move out of his hex, and kill the weasel with my last phaser. We both move a hex or two. I end up at R3, my #5 facing his #3 when the weasel clears, so I launch 50 plasma (S+F) and a pair of speed 6 shuttles. Next impulse, I HET in place, to get my other plasma F (and strong shields) to face him. He unexpectedly speeds up to 10. He tractors one of my shuttles at R3, I simultaneously attempt to tractor him at R3. I up my auction to effective 3 power (using 9), but he defeats it with 3 negative. I look and see that if I launch my second F torp here, even if it is a hex behind the other torps, it'll hit the same shield (#3) unless he has a HET (and I'm hoping that my tractor auction used some batteries). He moves a compelled forward hex, launches his SP, shoots my incoming plasma with all his facing phasers, and takes 12 in on the first hit (using 3 batteries for reinforcement) and then 20 on the second volley (he didn't HET). He takes the internals like a champ, however, losing 2xP3, P1, disruptor, drone rack, 8 power (all 3 impulse), 3 batteries, a tractor, and the rest fluff (i.e. he didn't lose extra phasers, or a second drone rack or disruptor). I can't follow up the plasma with any phasers, as they all were shot at junk. We both move a couple more times, he turns off, and I slip out. We end the turn at R5, my #2 facing his #4. I have 2 shuttles on the map. He has an SP on the map that will likely open on impulse 1, 4 hexes away from me.

He has 32 internals, down 8 power, some guns, and one down shield (#3). I have no internals, a 2 box #6, a 12 box #5, but not much on T3 but a possible fast F out of tube B.

We'll pick up in the near future.

T3: We start at R5, ZIN has a shuttle on the map which is certainly his SP (as it is the 4th shuttle launched and it was launched on T2) at R4. I have 2 shuttle on the map as well. I plot speed 17/18/17/18 for 19 moves to avoid the SP drones when they open on impulse 1. ZIN plots speed 9 all turn. Impulse 1, the SP doesn't open, as it was launched on impulse 25, and due to sequence of play, doesn't actually open till impulse 2 (9 impulses). You'd think me playing the ZIN for 20 years would have reminded me of that. I fire a couple P1s (and a back up R3 P3 from one of the shuttles) at the SP, and kill it. I just turn off and run to the NW corner of the map all turn. The Kzinti launches 3 drones, which kill my shuttles (one fired a P3 at an incoming drone, but it rolled a 6). Late in the turn, the ZIN hits my #3 shield for 6 damage with 3 standards (1 hit), 3xP1 (3 damage) and a couple P3s (miss) at R12. We and at 13 hexes, ZIN in the middle of the map-ish, me near the NW wall. EOT he fixes a drone rack and a shield box on his #3.

T4: I move 17 all turn, ZIN moves 14/19. I turn towards him, he shoots up my #2 for 9 damage at R12 or so with 3 standards and a P1. He just turns and runs for the rest of the turn, I turn about and follow him. Late in the turn, he zings my #6 for another 4 damage with his 360 P1's at R8. Impulse 31, he launches 3 speed 20 drones. We end the turn at R8, in the middle of the map. He fixes a R10 disruptor.

Dave has a weird internet issue and gets booted out during EA of T5, so we'll try to catch up later this week.

DATA POINT: When people were signing up for Sapphire Star VIII, there was at least one case where, for reasons unknown, a sign in was changed from a "yahoo.com" to a "gmail.com." So Justin Royter was not getting the messages I was posting, nor was he receiving E-mails sent by his opponent. This has been rectified, but raises the question of "has anyone else not gotten any messages from me?" It could be because your E-mail address in your signup was wrong. (Graham Cridland also had a fault in his that was corrected, but it was different from this). I am trying to be sure we do not have any other issues that could interfere with communications this time around.

We start at R8, my #2 facing his #4. He has 32 internals and 3 medium drones on the map.

T5: I plot speed 24 with a late drop to 17, finish an S and F, hold an S, roll an F torp, have full phasers and batteries, hold 1 weasel (I had 2 most of the game, but dropped one last turn). ZIN moves 14 for the turn. I turn in and start closing. I get to R1 of the 3 drones on the map on an impulse when they don't move the next impulse, so I shoot them all with P1's, figuring if one is a mystery type IV, I can kill it next impulse. They all blow up. I close more, he launches 4 fast drones (1 from a repaired rack). They get to R1. I tractor 2, ID all 4 successfully (all type I), kill the 2 loose drones with P1's each. He turns, I turn behind him. I get to R1, kill one of the tractored drones with a rear P1 (just in case), launch S, S, F directly off his #4. Next impulse we both move, he boldly HETs directly into the plasma, I slip behind his 2 box #3. He takes 50 in, getting mangled, shoots me with his facing guns through my #3 for about 10 in. I fire back a handful of phasers through his #3, and the ZIN surrenders.

A good game! If on T2 when I overran him, if he hit with an extra OL or 2, and then managed to take my second F torp on a different shield with a HET, he would have been in pretty good shape.
