PUSS FELINUS STRIKE CRUISER SSD
Link to the Puss Felinus Strike Cruiser SSD

THE PRIME SECTOR

PUSS FELINUS SHIPS
(PMR20.1) STRIKE CRUISER (SC):

The Puss Felinus Strike Cruiser was a fast adversary that could maintain a large number of seeking weapons at the same time. Armed with Two Disruptor Cannons, Two Offensive Quantum Phasers, and Six Defensive Quantum Phasers, the Puss Felinus could generate a powerful strike in combat. But it is the sheer number of Drones and Missiles that the Puss Felinus could field in battle that made it such a dreaded opponent. With Two Drones Racks, Two Tachyon Missile Racks and Two Missile Racks, the Puss Felinus Strike Cruiser could control an astonishing Eight Drones at once. This was more than enough to overwhelm any unprepared adversary. Tachyon Missiles changed the rules of combat by introducing a type of Drone that was not easily destroyed or dismissed. Tachyon Missiles were large, deadly, and fearsome.

DESIGNER NOTES:

The Puss Felinus Strike Cruiser is the Prime Sector Conversion of the Kzinti. Again, the question was asked: How can I improve upon this Classic and Efficient Design? And again, the answer is that I can’t. But by changing the technology available, I can alter the tactics used in battle. The Puss Felinus are sentient, humanoid house cats.

First of all, the Disruptors have been converted into Disruptor Cannons. While the two are technically equal, the Disruptor Cannon allows two turns worth of damage to be concentrated into a single strike, whereas the Disruptor would spread out that damage over two separate hits (assuming it does hit twice which it may not). This was done to give the Puss Felinus more “Teeth.”

Now came the most important part – dealing with the Kzinti Drones. Without a doubt, Drones were what defined the Kzinti, especially Tactically on the Battlefield. So the Puss Felinus had to be the same, and yet different. Two things came to mind.

The first thing is that the Puss Felinus utilize the Frax Missile Rack from Module C4. While Simulator Technology, the Rules are Sound and the Missile Rack is quite real for the Puss Felinus. The problem is that the Frax Missile Rack was designed to hold Type-IV Drones and only Type-IV Drones (with the exception of Type V Drones). This would not do at all for the Prime Sector. Type-IV Drones are Speed 8, Endurance 3, Warhead 24, Damage 6, and Space 2. Being able to unload 4 Type-IV Drones over the course of 4 Impulses would have made the Puss Felinus Too Powerful. The Type-IV Drones are just Too Big and Too Deadly for Prime Sector Heavy Cruisers. The solution, therefore, was to state that Puss Felinus Missile Racks come loaded with Type-I Drones, not Type-IV Drones. This still gives the Puss Felinus an advantage, as it can put 4 Type-I Drones on the map over 4 Impulses. This is Concentration of Drones, similar in effect to a Scatterpack, but without the actual need for a Scatterpack. Improvements can be made over time to the Puss Felinus Missile Rack, perhaps one day culminating in the use of Type-IV Drones.

The second thing is Tachyon Missiles. These big, cumbersome missiles clearly require Different Tactics than Drones. The main issue here is that the Basic Tachyon Missile is no more than a Big Drone. This Basic Tachyon Missile, Maximum Size 8, Propulsion 20, Armor 8, Endurance 3, 1 point of Negative Tractor, and Warhead 8, is what the Puss Felinus starts out with. Improvements can be added to the Basic Tachyon Missile at a BPV Cost. It is important to note two more facts. The Basic Tachyon Missile Rack can launch 1 Tachyon Missile per Turn from Two Boxes of Tachyon Missiles. Each Tachyon Missile requires 2 Seeking Control Channels to guide.

At this point, with the addition of the Missile Rack and Tachyon Missiles, it became clear that the Puss Felinus would greatly benefit from Additional Seeking Control Channels. Great care had to be taken here, because this could easily make the Puss Felinus Unstoppable on the Game Board. And yet, Tachyon Missiles required Twice the Normal Channels and Missile Racks put out a Group of Drones all at once (or almost). So the decision was made to give the Puss Felinus a Sensor Rating of 8. This would allow it to control 6 Type-I Drones (equivalent of a Scatterpack) and 1 Tachyon Drone. Alternatively, the Puss Felinus could control 8 Type-I Drones instead. Since Drones and Drone-like Weapons are the Puss Felinus’ Bread and Butter in Battle, I think this increased Seeking Weapon Control is Warranted.

Lastly, the Puss Felinus was given Quantum Phasers. This lowered the Phaser Damage Output slightly, but not so much for the Quantum Phaser-3. The Omega Range Brackets had to Revised to Alpha Sector Standards to make them work within the Prime Sector.

Surprisingly, the Puss Felinus did not require any New Technology in order to make their Tactics work.

In summary, the Puss Felinus feels like a Kzinti when flown, but has noticeable differences in terms of weaponry and tactics. Tachyon Missiles, especially when improved, pose a much deadlier threat than the standard Drone. Missile Racks allow Drones to be put on the Battlefield quickly over several impulses. Disruptor Cannons provide a deadlier version of the Disruptor, one that is on par with a Photon Torpedo. Ultimately, the Puss Felinus is different than the Kzinti that inspired it, but it retains much of the Flavor of the Kzinti in combat.

Y115 – The Alliance of Lords and the Guardian Knights make friendly contact with the Puss Felinus. They quickly discover that the Puss Felinus is also in conflict with both the Death Cult and the Draco. A Preliminary Alliance is formed, allowing starships from the Alliance of Lords and Guardian Knights to freely move through Puss Felinus territory and vica versa. An agreement is also made to reinforce each other’s borders when necessary.

MERLIN

"For this reason, we are installing a battalion of marines onboard the Merlin. This battalion, led by a Major of our choosing, will work side by side with your Tactical Officer and your Chief of Security. None of them supersedes the other in terms of authority. They are all separate units that answer solely to you."

Captain Elizabeth stared at the immense, intimidating figure standing before her. Although it wore a solid black Marine uniform with a white Alliance of Lords symbol over the left breast, its massive form must have weighed more than five hundred pounds. The figure, which was standing rigidly at attention, looked like a strange type of dinosaur. It had reptilian features combined with avian features. A crocodile like mouth stretched out from its face, while feathers covered the many hard scales protecting its body. Razor sharp bird-like claws extended from its long arms. The creature's eyes were bright orange with thin black slits in the center. This was Major Zilo.

"Major Zilo. I read your report. Welcome to the Merlin. I understand that you are an Archosaur."

"Yes, Ma'am," Major Zilo growled. "My people's ways are not my own. They believe in a savage hierarchy dictated by might alone. My egg was found by the Alliance of Lords abandoned on a volcanic planet. While I am a proponent of physical ferocity, I also believe in a sense of honor."

Captain Elizabeth was already impressed with Major Zilo. She smiled at the sentient and obviously very intelligent being in front of her.

"I see. And I understand you have hand chosen your troops. The battalion that you call...the Alpha Predators."

"That is correct, Ma'am. Although I am open to new recruits as we proceed on our mission. I anticipate some losses over the course of time."

Captain Elizabeth formed a sad expression on her face at the thought. Yet Major Zilo was simply thinking ahead and honestly anticipating the future.

"What is your Mission, Major Zilo?"

"To Protect the Merlin and her Crew at All Costs, Ma'am!!"

"Have you studied the layout and design of the Merlin?"

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Very good. Morgause will be giving you and the Alpha Predators a tour of the Merlin. I'm certain you will become very familiar with her over time. Your quarters and training den are all ready for you and your troops."

"I thank you, Ma'am. The Alpha Predators will not let you down."

"I expect no less. Now, I want your full report by tomorrow at 0500 hours. In particular, I want you to note Key Locations to Protect during Enemy Hit and Run Raids. I also want you and your troops to run regular drills training to perform Ht and Run Raids on Enemy Vessels. Note any Vulnerabilities you identify on the Merlin. You will work closely with Dusk to ensure the protection of the Merlin at all times. Let me know what equipment and weapons you require and I will make sure you get them. Lastly, in the event that one of our crew gets taken hostage by an alien force, I want a rescue plan laid out. I know that the plan will be vague without specific details, but we need to start somewhere. I also want a separate report on the Archosaur, providing what knowledge you have about them, in case we encounter them in our travels. Is there anything else?"

"Yes, Ma'am. If I have to choose between the Merlin and her Crew, which one takes Priority?"

Captain Elizabeth was quick to answer. "The Crew...ALWAYS. Ships can be Replaced. People Cannot Be."

"Understood, Ma'am!"

"Dismissed Major Zilo."

Captain Elizabeth watched the large creature leave her Ready Room, barely fitting through the door. His tail swung left and right as he squeezed through.

AND SUDDENLY, CAPTAIN ELIZABETH FELT VERY, VERY SECURE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE MERLIN AND HER CREW.

QUETZALCOATLUS GIANT FLIER SSD
Link to the Quetzalcoatlus Giant Flier SSD

THE PRIME SECTOR

QUETZALCOATLUS SHIPS
(PMR21.1) GIANT FLIER (GF):

The Quetzalcoatlus Giant Flier was a sleek, agile combatant in the Prime Sector feared for its Implosion Weaponry. Armed with One Implosion Bolt, Two Medium Implosion Torpedoes, and One Heavy Implosion Torpedo, the Quetzalcoatlus Giant Flier could wreck the average Prime Sector Heavy Cruiser with a single concentrated strike. Six Pulse Phasers provided excellent seeking weapon defense, in addition to being able to generate a close range offensive barrage. Warp Field Distortion Mines confused and surprised many a foe, most of which were unused to the strange technology embedded into the Mine. But it was the Quetzalcoatlus’ Advanced Cloaking Device that struck fear into the staunchest adversary. The Quetzalcoatlus could literally disappear in space and reappear at will, sneaking behind enemy lines to disrupt their formations and supply lines. Finally, few knew of the Quetzalcoatlus’ main vulnerability: shields which were much weaker than the standard Prime Sector Heavy Cruiser.

DESIGNER NOTES:

The Quetzalcoatlus Giant Flier is the Prime Sector Conversion of the Romulans. However, the new design is so far removed from its original inspiration, it is only distantly related. The Quetzalcoatlus are gigantic sentient Pterosaurs. The Quetzalcoatlus have ever been at war with their hated enemies, the Puss Felinus.

To start, standard Plasma Torpedoes have been replaced by Implosion Torpedoes and Implosion Bolts. This leads directly into one of the first problems. I always knew there was something off with the energy requirements to arm an Implosion Bolt.

An Implosion Bolt is armed over three turns with 1 point, then 2 points, and then 3 points, for a total of 6 points of energy. Implosion Bolts can be quick loaded and fired in 2 turns by applying an additional 3 points of reserve power on the second turn (for a total of 6 points of energy over 2 turns). In terms of damage, at Ranges 10-12, an Implosion Bolt scores 12 points of damage. At Ranges 7-9, an Implosion Bolt scores 14 points of damage. At Ranges 4-6, an Implosion Bolt scores 16 points of damage. At Ranges 1-3, an Implosion Bolt scores 18 points of damage. And at Range 0, an Implosion Bolt scores 20 points of damage.

We can already start to see some of the problems with the energy/damage ratio for the Implosion Bolt. Looking at Ranges 10-12, for 6 points of energy (over 3 turns or accelerated over 2 turns), an Implosion Bolt scores 12 points of damage. This is a 1:2 ratio, which is fine. However, as the Range decreases, the amount of damage increases. This means the 1:2 ratio will also increase. At Range 0, for 6 points of energy (over 3 turns), an Implosion Bolt scores 20 points of damage, which is More than a 1:3 ratio! This certainly would not do for the Prime Sector, which strives for Balance (between ships, between weapons, between technology, between empires, etc.) as much as possible (it can never be totally achieved unless the ships are exactly identical).

Now, you might be able to make the argument that the Implosion Bolt arming requirements are actually based on Plasma Torpedo arming requirements which are also completed over three turns. Thinking about this, we find that a Plasma-F requires 5 points of energy (total) and scores 20 damage maximum. A Plasma-G requires 7 points of energy (total) and scores 20 damage maximum. And a Plasma-S requires 8 points of energy (total) and scores 30 damage maximum. Comparing the 6 points of energy that is the standard energy requirement to arm an Implosion Bolt, you might think this is comparable to a Plasma-F, since 6 points of energy is close to 5 points of energy and both weapons score 20 damage maximum. The issue here is that the Implosion Bolt is a Direct Fire Weapon which instantly hits its target while the Plasma Torpedo is a Seeking Weapon which must travel to reach its target. It loses warhead strength the further it travels and it can be damaged by phaser fire. The Implosion Bolt has none of these weaknesses.

What you should really be comparing the Implosion Bolt against is a Bolted Plasma Torpedo. In this case, the Bolted Plasma Torpedo will score Half of its Normal Damage. Comparing against the Implosion Torpedo, we find that in order to score the Implosion Bolt’s maximum damage of 20 at Range 0, we would need a Bolted Plasma Torpedo Greater than a Plasma-S (which scores 30 points of damage) and less than a Plasma-R (which scores 50 points of damage). 30 damage (Plasma-S) divided by 2 (for the Bolt) equals 15 points of damage. 50 damage (Plasma-R) divided by 2 (for the Bolt) equals 25 points of damage. So the Implosion Bolt (with 20 maximum damage) falls in-between a Bolted Plasma-S and a Bolted Plasma-R in terms of damage potential. In terms of energy, an Implosion Bolt requires 6 points of energy total (either Standard or Accelerated) in comparison to a Plasma-S (which requires a total of 8 points of energy) and a Plasma-R (which requires a total of 9 points of energy). So is an Implosion Bolt (either Standard or Accelerated) equal to a Bolted Plasma Torpedo? No, the Implosion Bolt costs less and potentially scores more than a Bolted Plasma-S.

So we can determine from all this that the problem lies in the energy requirements (6 points of energy over 3 Turns or 6 points of energy over 2 Turns if Accelerated) for an Implosion Bolt (which can score 20 damage maximum at Range 0). Perhaps the original idea was that the distorted energy/damage ratio was mitigated by turning a Two Turn Weapon (in comparison to a Photon Torpedo) into a Three Turn Weapon…? Regardless if this was the original justification, it does not solve the 1:3 ratio inherent in the Implosion Bolt (either Standard or Accelerated). So the solution is simple. The energy requirements for the Implosion Bolt (both Standard and Accelerated) must be Fixed.

Technically, the new energy requirements for an Implosion Bolt should be 9 points of energy over Three Turns (this makes the energy/damage ratio for an Implosion Bolt a 1:2 ratio for the most part). Only at Range 0, where the Implosion Bolt can score 20 points of damage, does the 1:2 ratio increase slightly.

However, to make the Standard Implosion Bolt more Efficient (in terms of the energy/damage ratio), I will make the new energy requirements 8 points of energy over Three Turns. This makes the ratio 1:2 for All Ranges except Ranges 1-3 and Range 0, where the ratio is slightly better (8 points of energy generates 18 points of damage or 20 points of damage). Broken down, the new energy requirements for a Standard Implosion Bolt will be 2 points of energy on the first turn, 3 points of energy on the second turn, and 3 points of energy on the third turn (total of 8 points of energy). The Implosion Bolt can still be quick fired in Two Turns by applying 3 points of reserve power on the second turn (still totaling 8 points of energy).

Fortunately, Implosion Torpedoes are more comparable to Plasma Torpedoes than Implosion Bolts were to Photon Torpedoes. A Medium Implosion Torpedo requires 6 points of energy over 3 turns and scores 24 damage maximum. Comparing that to a Plasma-F, which requires 5 points of energy (total) and scores 20 damage maximum, we can see that the Medium Implosion Torpedo is right on track. A Heavy Implosion Torpedo requires 8 points of energy over 3 turns and scores 32 damage maximum. Comparing that to a Plasma-S, which requires 8 points of energy (total) and scores 30 damage maximum, we can see that the Heavy Implosion Torpedo is just a fraction better than a Plasma-S in terms of damage. This is fine. A Light Implosion Torpedo requires 4 points of energy over 3 turns and scores 16 damage maximum. Comparing that to a Plasma-F, which requires 5 points of energy (total) and scores 20 damage maximum, we can see that the Light Implosion Torpedo is correct. A Super Heavy Implosion Torpedo requires 11 points of energy over 3 turns and scores 48 damage maximum. Comparing that to a Plasma-R, which requires 9 points of energy (total) and scores 50 damage maximum, we can see that the Super Heavy Implosion Torpedo is Very Inefficient in terms of energy/damage. Still, an Inefficient Weapon is not Game-Breaking, so the Super Heavy Implosion Torpedo is fine as is.

To give the Quetzalcoatlus more tactical options in combat, Implosion Torpedoes were allowed to have Pseudo Torpedoes. I don’t think it is too farfetched that this technology might one day have been developed.

To change the tactics required to win with the Quetzalcoatlus, they were given Phaser-P’s. This will make the Quetzalcoatlus deadly at close range, like the Kzinti, due to the Double PH-3’s. However, it will make the Quetzalcoatlus lacking at mid range, because it will have to use PH-2’s instead of the usual PH-1’s. In this way, it is like a Klingon at mid range. The Phaser-P’s Double PH-3’s will also provide excellent seeking weapon defense for the Quetzalcoatlus.

Instead of Nuclear Space Mines, the Quetzalcoatlus use Warp Field Distortion Mines. Again, the intent here is to change the tactics required in order to be victorious. Warp Field Distortion Mines are a unique weapon that provide excellent seeking weapon defense, but they can also damage ships. Instead of forcing the Quetzalcoatlus to buy the Warp Field Distortion Mines, I stated that they come standard with the ship, the cost is included in the BPV. In fact, the Quetzalcoatlus carry more Warp Field Distortion Mines than unusual, due to a special bay that only they utilize.

Lastly, I wanted to do something different with the Cloaking Device. It still had to work like a Cloak, because that is one of the main elements I wanted to import into the Prime Sector from the Romulans. But it had to have other functions, things that would make it more versatile in terms of tactics on the battlefield. Therefore, the Quetzalcoatlus use an Advanced Cloaking Device, one which has the option to function as a Mask or Veil whenever needed. There may be tactical situations where one does not want to pay for the full cost of the Cloak or the full benefits of the Cloak are not needed. So the Mask or Veil provide a cheaper alternative, one that comes with some limited advantages. An experienced Captain can use these three options (Mask, Veil, Cloak) to throw off the opponent’s game and make them think one thing while actually doing another.

All in all, the Quetzalcoatlus retains the flavor of the Romulans, but functions completely different in terms of tactics on the battlefield. Implosion Bolts provide a powerful direct-fire weapon which compliment Implosion Torpedoes. Implosion Torpedoes, which are similar to Plasma Torpedoes, actually function much differently in terms of underloading, losing warhead strength, implosion, and ECCM. Warp Field Distortion Mines provide a versatile and deadly option when employing tactics on the battlefield. Phaser-P’s are deadly up close due to their dual shots. Lastly, the Advanced Cloaking Device provides the Quetzalcoatlus with more options than the standard Cloaking Device employed by the Romulans. The Quetzalcoatlus is ready to fly and let all of its prey beware when its huge dark shadow looms overhead!

Lots of personnel transferring over to the Merlin while we are docked at Starbase Dover, Captain Elizabeth thought. But then again, I lost a lot of crew members during our battle with the Death Cult. And sometimes, new blood is good...

Captain Elizabeth stared at the unusual figure seated calmly before her. The person was no more than three feet tall. He was solid black, except for his two eyes which seemed to glow yellow. A white robe covered in symbols hung from his body. This was Fortune. He was one of the Puss Felinus. Fortune was also the Merlin's new Chaplain.

"Welcome to the Merlin, Fortune. We welcome your religious faith and the positive influence it will have over the crew."

"It is a blessing to be here," Fortune replied with a slight purr. His black tail flipped back and forth slowly. "The Merlin's reputation precedes her. I hope I can contribute to her success."

"Your bio indicated that you serve the True Lord. Could you elaborate?"

Fortune paused as he closed his eyes for a moment. A few seconds of silence passed before he spoke.

"Yes, I serve the True Lord. But that doesn't mean that I am not open to other beliefs. Anyone is free to come to me. I will do my best to impart what limited wisdom I have upon them and guide them toward the path."

"The path?" Captain Elizabeth asked in a curious tone.

"The path of right and wrong, of course," Fortune replied with a smile and a purr.

"I see..." Captain Elizabeth remarked. "Fortune, I'm sure you are aware that we have a crew full of very diverse belief systems. They are free to worship what they please per Alliance of Lords policy. Some don't worship anything at all. And right and wrong is relative, depending on your perspective."

Fortune paused once again. His tail whipped back and forth faster.

"Captain, you and I both know that right and wrong is right and wrong. It is fixed. It does not move. It is not relative. Every living thing innately knows what is right and wrong, although they don't always choose the proper one."

Captain Elizabeth found Fortune to be intriguing. She could spend endless hours discussing metaphysical topics with him.

"Please, Fortune, call me Elizabeth."

"As you wish, Elizabeth. If you don't mind my asking, what are your own beliefs?"

Captain Elizabeth's life flashed before her eyes. She thought of every moment when something unexplained happened that defied logic.

"I definitely believe there is a higher power outside of science. I'm just not exactly sure what it is. Perhaps that is one of the things we will discover as the Merlin completes her travels?"

Fortune purred. "I hope so, Elizabeth. I will do my best to assist you in your discovery. Every person has to discover their faith on their own. Belief is something that can never be forced on anyone."

Captain Elizabeth nodded in agreement. She was confident that Fortune would make a fine addition to the crew.

"Very well. I think our meeting is concluded. If you need anything in the Chapel, just let me know."

"I will, Elizabeth. You have been most gracious. You have my sincere thanks. I look forward to serving the crew of the Merlin."

Fortune hopped out of his seat with grace and agility. For a moment, Captain Elizabeth had forgotten about his feline nature. Before Fortune could leave, Captain Elizabeth asked one final question.

"Fortune? I almost forgot. I noticed in your Bio that you describe yourself as a Battle Chaplain. Why is that?"

Fortune turned and smiled at the Captain. His yellow eyes glowed brighter.

"It is my Duty to Combat Evil in All of its Forms. The True Lord's Words are my Armour. My Faith is my Flaming Sword."

LET EVIL BEWARE.

While docked at Starbase Dover, Captain Elizabeth continued to meet with new transfers to the Merlin.

"It's my pleasure to meet you...ah...Two Moons?"

"That is correct, Captain. It is the name I chose shortly after becoming part of your society. My Gekkota name is almost impossible to pronounce."

Captain Elizabeth stared at the diminutive individual sitting in her Ready Room. He was a humanoid Gecko, light blue in color, with large orange eyes. Streaks of red paint slashed diagonally across his face. Two large feathers sat atop his head. He was wearing light brown clothing made of deerskin. Strange ornaments and pendants hung from his shirt.

"Your transfer said that you are a 'Spiritual Advisor.' Can you tell me more?"

Two Moons chuckled loudly. His attitude was very friendly and easy going.

"Such an official title! Well, some call me a Spiritualist, but I prefer to be called a Shaman. Or you might say Medicine Man. Or Folk Healer. They all mean the same thing, Captain."

"I see. Please call me Elizabeth. Why do you want to join the Merlin?"

Two Moon's orange eyes darted back and forth several times. His long tongue darted in an out of his mouth quickly.

"Ever since I joined your society, I wanted to use my abilities, knowledge, wisdom, and skills to protect, elevate, educate, and heal others. My goal was the same when I joined the Alliance of Lords. My goal still remains the same on board the Merlin."

Captain Elizabeth felt completely at ease with Two Moons for some reason. There was something about his personality that made him easy to get along with. Perhaps it was because there was no competition, judgement, resentment, domination, or aggressiveness?

"I have to admit, I am somewhat skeptical when it comes to the spirit world."

"There are many realities, Elizabeth, many dimensions, planes, and realms. What we see with our own eyes is only a tiny fraction of what is reality. My role allows me to search out, communicate, and interact with the denizens of these other spheres. Realize that some of these entities are benevolent and some are malevolent."

Captain Elizabeth immediately began to see the use of having Two Moons present during their years of exploration. They were bound to come across things on foreign worlds that did not fit neatly into the laws of science. In those cases, Two Moons might be able to solve things that traditional science could not.

"I don't want to put you on the spot, Two Moons, but would you mind giving me a brief demonstration? If you're not comfortable with that, I understand."

"No problem at all, Elizabeth. Just a moment."

Two Moons took out two candles, lit them, and placed them on Captain Elizabeth's desk. Then he began to beat the desk lightly as if playing a drum. There was a certain rhythm created. Two Moons began to sway his body back and forth, and oddly enough, so did Captain Elizabeth. Then Two Moons began to chant lightly. The words were unrecognizable to Captain Elizabeth.

Suddenly, a dark grey cloud appeared above Captain Elizabeth's head. She could not believe it. Thunder clapped once. Then the grey cloud released its belongings, pouring a shower of rain directly onto Captain Elizabeth. Within seconds, she was soaked. Then the dark grey cloud disappeared as quickly as it came.

Two moons stopped drumming. He put away his candles and smiled.

"Well, Captain?"

"There's little doubt about the authenticity of your powers," Captain Elizabeth said with a laugh. Her long blonde hair hung downward as if she just got out of the shower. "I just wish your demonstration would have left me more..."

DRY.

This was the only transfer that Captain Elizabeth had objected to. But Alliance Command overruled her objection and insisted on the transfer. They claimed it was necessary for the Merlin's survival. Captain Elizabeth didn't understand the decision, but she accepted it. Now she found herself staring at a beautiful young woman who looked as though she barely graduated from school.

"Let's be frank, Captain. You don't want me here. And yet, here I must be. I report directly to you. I will serve the Merlin well, whether she likes it or not."

Captain Elizabeth couldn't help but to frown. She adjusted her long blonde hair. The young woman met her gaze with an intensity that almost made Captain Elizabeth look away.

"Very well, Lilith. Let's try to make the best of a bad situation. Yes, you will do exactly as I say and no more. Is that understood? Now, the orders say you are a...Negativity Advisor?"

Lilith cracked a wicked grin. "Let's cut to the chase, shall we, Captain? No need for made up titles between us. I am Evil. I Understand Evil. That is why you need me on your mission. Alliance Command knows that you will encounter True Evil somewhere in deep space. When you do, my presence on board the Merlin will be Critical."

Captain Elizabeth went quiet. She was shocked with Lilith's forwardness. But at the same time, it gave her a sense of comfort. There was genuine honesty, even if it was about an uncomfortable subject.

"And what exactly do you do, Lilith? What is your occupation?"

"I'm a Witch, of course," Lilith answered with a smile. The young woman's lovely face was covered with black makeup and bright red lipstick. She wore a loose black outfit that was very revealing. Long black hair stretched down past her shoulders. And for the first time, Captain Elizabeth noticed two red horns protruding from Lilith's forehead. She couldn't believe her eyes.

"I...see. And what species are you, Lilith? I have never met anyone like you."

Lilith adjusted her clothing. Her pink eyes glowed bright red for a moment.

"Oh, let's just say I have lived for a long, long time, Captain. I would say that I am a unique creature in the universe. Is that alright? To be unlike anyone else that exists?"

There was a certain sarcasm in Lilith's voice which was accented by another one of her wicked grins. For a moment, Captain Elizabeth thought her slender fragile hands were claws.

"What is your purpose on board the Merlin, Lilith?"

"To instruct all of you in the ways of Evil," Lilith answered with a smile. She looked stunning to Captain Elizabeth. A youth in the prime of her life. Then suddenly, she looked like an old hag with wrinkled skin and grey hair. Captain Elizabeth shook her head and looked again. Lilith looked young again.

"Is something the matter, Captain?"

Captain Elizabeth stood up. She motioned with her hand toward the door leading out of her Ready Room.

"No, Lilith. I believe our meeting is concluded. Be sure to report to me regularly."

Lilith slowly got up. Captain Elizabeth thought for a moment that she saw bat wings emerging from Lilith's back. But in the next moment, they were gone.

"Of course, Captain. I will stay in close contact with you. One last thing, Captain. You know, Good likes to think it is Better than Evil. It likes to think that Evil must be vanquished at all costs. But this is furthest from the Truth."

FOR ALL GOOD THINGS HAVE EVIL WITHIN THEM.

STARDATE 07.21.21

Link to previous Merlin entries

The funeral took place in the late afternoon. Captain Elizabeth was on Charon-III, a planet within a days reach of Starbase Dover. Although she was wearing her standard all-white Alliance of Lords uniform, it was overlaid with pieces of solid black cloth. Standing beside Captain Elizabeth was Lovecraft. The crimson red Vampire Squid was unusually silent.

Ensign Marc Wilcox had died during the Merlin's battle with the Death Cult. Now, Captain Elizabeth had the unsavory duty of attending what funerals should could, based on her time available and distance to travel. There were so many who died.

Captain Elizabeth had only had minimal contact with Ensign Wilcox. She had met him and interacted with him perhaps three or four times at most. What she knew of him came from Daedalus. Ensign Wilcox worked in Engineering. Daedalus would send regular reports to Captain Elizabeth which included Ensign Wilcox's performance. He was a promising young crewman.

After the body had been lowered into the ground, Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox approached Captain Elizabeth. Although they had cried their hearts out during the service, there were still tears in their eyes.

"You have my condolences for your son, Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox. He was a valued member of the Merlin. We will not forget him."

A crow cawed loudly atop a withered old tree.

"He always spoke highly of you, Captain," Mrs. Wilcox said in a fragile voice. She was a short older woman. "Marc was so proud to serve on board the Merlin. Ever since he was young, he wanted to work on a starship. He loved math and science. We were so proud when he graduated from Alliance Academy. We just...just...wished...he would have...had...longer..."

Mrs. Wilcox broke into tears. Mr. Wilcox hugged her tightly. He looked at Captain Elizabeth.

"I read the details of your battle with the Death Cult. You had little hope of surviving against three of their battlecruisers. It's a wonder you made it back to Starbase Dover at all. But there's one thing I don't understand. It sounded as if you had beaten the Stumgeschutz and forced it away from Outpost Colchester. And yet you still chased the Stumgeschutz into the Sexton Cloud where you were ambushed by the other two Death Cult Battlecruisers. Was this necessary?"

Captain Elizabeth went silent. Her throat began to dry up. She glanced at Lovecraft who silently stared back at her with one of his light blue orbs. She looked Mr. Wilcox in the eyes.

"No sir. It was a command decision that I made in the heat of the moment. The Stumgeschutz was wounded. We had a chance to deprive the Death Cult of one of their prized Battlecruisers. So I chased her into the Cloud. And because of my decision...your son Died."

Everyone present went quiet as they contemplated Captain Elizabeth's last words. There was nothing more to say. Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox nodded toward Captain Elizabeth and Lovecraft and then went on their way.

Captain Elizabeth's shoulders hung low. Her back curved. Her spirit was broken. How could she replace a young life? One that she was responsible for taking?

Then she heard Lovecraft's soft voice.

"Never regret your command decisions, Elizabeth. You did what you thought best for the Alliance of Lords. Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox will never be able to see the perspective of an Alliance of Lords Captain. They just don't have the insight, knowledge, or experience that you do. Marc Wilcox accepted his responsibilities when he joined the Alliance of Lords and chose to serve aboard the Merlin. He knew the risks."

INSTEAD OF MOURNING HIS LOSS, WE SHOULD CELEBRATE HIS SACRIFICE.

The Training Den. Practice Area for the Alpha Predators. A mock war area filled with corridors, barricades, obstacles, walls, pits, water, and more. The Training Den is outfitted with all sorts of technology to help simulate actual combat. Its configuration can be easily and quickly changed to suit the current training exercise.

Morgause stood in her ceremonial white armor with sword drawn and shield in hand. She had accepted the challenge to combat without hesitation. For what Guardian Knight would not have?

Across from her crouched Major Zilo. The five hundred pound reptilian avian wore his black uniform with a white Alliance of Lords logo over the left breast. He was a massive creature, covered in hard scales and feathers. Sharp talons extended from his arms and legs, so sharp they could cut through flesh like jelly. Major Zilo was armed with all of his regular gear.

The rest of the Alpha Predators stood on the outskirts of the arena, ready to cheer for their leader.

Major Zilo opened up with a Phaser burst set on stun. Instantly, Morgause's shield was in place ready to deflect the attack. The enchanted protective artifact was more than capable of absorbing Phaser fire. A brief flash of red energy hit the shield, failing to penetrate it. When Morgause looked again, she was surprised to find that Major Zilo had disappeared.

How could such a giant creature move so quickly? I must be extremely cautious...

Morgause stepped carefully through the Training Den Maze. The walls were six feet high, but they were open on top. it was the perfect place for an ambush. Morgause's mystic blade glowed as she held it in front of her.

To Morgause's surprise, she exited the maze without incident. She found herself in a large garden full of trees, brush, rocks, and a stream. A snapping sound behind her made Morgause whirl about, prepared to strike. Too late, she realized it was misdirection.

Major Zilo swooped down from above like an eagle. Morgause had no idea he could fly. Perhaps it was only for short distances. He landed directly on top of Morgause, nearly crushing her with his immense weight. It was more than enough to knock the wind out of Morgause. Quickly, Major Zilo ripped Morgause's shield from her and kicked away her sword. He prepared to strike with one of his talons.

But Major Zilo was unaware that each Guardian Knight sword was mystically tied to its owner. Using both legs, Morgause was able to unbalance Major Zilo enough for her to escape from underneath him. The Tactical Officer rolled five feet away. Morgause held out her hand and her sword instantly flew into her grasp.

"Let's see how you fare when surprise isn't on your side!!"

Morgause drove her magic blade deep into Major Zilo's side. Even his hardened scales couldn't stop the blow. However, the Archosaur did not scream or cry out in pain. He simply smiled revealing his crocodile like teeth.

Three quick talon strikes cracked Morgause's armor and sent her onto her back. A powerful stomp followed, shattering Morgause's chest plate. Major Zilo tore off Morgause's helmet, revealing her bright red hair. The Archosaur roared in triumph.

Major Zilo lifted Morgause into the air by her neck with one hand.

Guardia Prime. Capital Homeworld of the Guardian Knights. Thousands of Guardian Knights are assembled in front of the Bastion of Hope. It is a titanic White Castle decorated in blue whose spires reach high up into the sky. This was the sight where the first Guardian Knight was beknighted, hundreds of years ago. Today, it still serves as the location to beknight worthy candidates into the Order of the Guardian Knights. A blue sky set the stage for the ceremony. Everyone was gathered outside in front of the Bastion of Hope. A long series of wide steps led up to the entrance to the Citadel.

Morgause knelt on one knee before the Guardian Queen. In the background, seated on a White Throne, was the Guardian King. Morgause leaned on her sword, which was pointed toward the ground, and held her helmet in her other hand. Her shield was strapped to her back. Morgause's head was titled downward, allowing her long red hair to blow vigorously in the wind.

"Morgause," the Guardian Queen said in a soft voice that only Morgause could hear. She touched Morgause on both shoulders with a regal scepter. "I dub thee a Guardian Knight. You are now one of my faithful servants who serve the Order. A warrior knight who stands for truth, right, justice, wisdom, temperance, fortitude, and vigilance. Always remember the man to your right and the woman to your left. For they are your brothers and sisters. The Order of Guardian Knights is now your family. Rise. And feel the Spirit flowing through your bones."

Morgause slowly rose to her feet. The huge crowd of Guardian Knights cheered so loud that you couldn't hear the person next to you talking. Morgause had a confused look on her pretty face.

"Spirit?"

The Guardian Queen smiled as she peered into Morgause's eyes and into her soul. "The Spirit that connects all Guardian Knights with one another. You are now part of that Spirit, as is every Guardian Knight that has come before you. Always remember, Morgause, you never fight alone. Your brothers and sisters fight with you, no matter where you are, no matter how far away. Their Spirit is always in you and your Spirit is always in them. Call on the Spirit during times of great need, and the Spirit will Answer."

Morgause could feel the air slipping out of her lungs as Major Zilo continued to choke her off the ground with one hand. Suddenly, she could hear the Guardian Queen's voice, whispering in her ear. Her eyes glowed like fire.

With a twisting wrench, Morgause broke Major Zilo's grasp using both of her hands. Even with his immense size, he could not stop her newfound strength. Pain shot through Major Zilo's wrist. He stared at Morgause with shock and surprise.

Morgause stepped toward Major Zilo shining bright as a star. Major Zilo could barely see the outline of her form due to the intense radiance. A punch to Major Zilo's crocodile-like jaw nearly sent him into oblivion. He struggled to remain conscious. How did Morgause get so strong? A kick to his gut followed, causing him to hunch over. Morgause pulled out her enchanted sword that was still stuck ino Major Zilo's side. After spinning it around her body, she slashed across one of Major Zilo's legs, depriving him of his ability to walk. Then she cut one of the wings that was attached to his arm so that he could not fly away.

Morgause pointed her blade at Major Zilo's throat. All of the Alpha Predators that were watching the contest when silent.

"I believe this contest is over, Major Zilo. It was quite a battle, but I am the Victor. Let there be no animosity between us, for we are warriors, and we freely agreed to partake in this ritual together. Instead, let us celebrate the combat together through wine and song."

"How?" Major Zilo growled. The five hundred pound Archosaur struggled to get to his feet, but his wounded leg would not allow him to. He slumped back toward to the ground. "How...is it possible? You are not...that strong. You were...beaten."

Morgause stared at the avian reptile with her fiery eyes. Rays of white light shot out of her body in every direction.

TO FACE ONE GUARDIAN KNIGHT IS TO FACE ALL OF US. NO GUARDIAN KNIGHT EVER FIGHTS ALONE. WHEN YOU CHALLENGED ME, MAJOR ZILO, YOU CHALLENGED THE ENTIRE ORDER OF GUARDIAN KNIGHTS.

ROVER RAID GENERAL SCENARIO (PMSG2.0)
Link to the Rover Raid General Scenario
Link to the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser SSD
Link to the Death Cult Battlecruiser SSD
Link to the Rover Merchant Vessel SSD

(PMSG2.0) ROVER RAID
By Norman Dizon, Regenesis Galaxies

It was typical for a Rover Merchant Vessel to be ambushed by a fleet of starships while traveling to a friendly empire. While a Rover Merchant Vessel could defend itself well against a single starship, it was no match for multiple assailants. In this scenario, a Rover Merchant Vessel has been attacked by a Death Cult fleet. An Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser races to its aid. When the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser arrives, it discovers that the Rover Merchant Vessel has been heavily damaged and all but two damaged Death Cult Battlecruisers remain of the attacking fleet.

DESIGNER NOTES: Each of the Death Cult Battlecruisers has 42 internals remaining. Combined, they have 84 internals total. The Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser has 85 internals. This is a fair fight. However, both Death Cult Battlecruisers have one down shield and other damaged shields. The Alliance of Lords has fresh, undamaged shields. The Rover Merchant Vessel is in bad shape with only 38 internals remaining.
The key here is the focus on the Rover Merchant Vessel. The Death Cult Battlecruisers are not out to simply destroy the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser. Their mission is to destroy or capture the Rover Merchant Vessel. Their top priority is to deprive the Alliance of Lords of its cargo.
There is a time factor built into the scenario because it only takes so long for the Rover Merchant Vessel to disengage. Therefore, the Death Cult Battlecruisers have to act quickly to achieve their goal, regardless of what the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser is attempting to do.

(PMSG2.1) NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 3; the Alliance of Lords player, the Death Cult player, and the Rover player. Alternatively, the Rover Merchant Vessel could be controlled by the Alliance of Lords player.
(PMSG2.2) INITIAL SET UP
ALLIANCE OF LORDS HEAVY CRUISER: In Hex 0101, Heading C, Speed 20, WS-III
DEATH CULT BATTLECRUISER A: In Hex 3618, Heading A, Speed 12, WS-III
DEATH CULT BATTLECRUISER B: In Hex 3125, Heading E, Speed 12, WS-III
ROVER MERCHANT VESSEL: In Hex 2218, Heading F, Speed 8, WS-III
YEAR: Y100
(PMSG2.3) LENGTH OF SCENARIO: The scenario continues until the Rover Merchant Vessel disengages, all ships have been destroyed, the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser disengages, both of the Death Cult Battlecruisers disengage, or a combination of the above.
(PMSG2.4) SPECIAL RULES
(PMSG2.41) MAP: The map is fixed; it does not float. Any unit leaving the map has disengaged and cannot return. This is the only means by which ships can disengage.
The Rover Merchant Vessel and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser can only disengage along map edges 0101 to 4101 and 0101 to 0130. The Death Cult Battlecruisers can only disengage along map edges 4201 to 4230 and 0230 to 4230.
(PMSG2.42) SHUTTLES AND PFs: Shuttles and PFs are available to all three empires based on Y100.
(PMSG2.43) COMMANDER’S OPTION ITEMS
(PMSG2.431) The Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser, the Death Cult Battlecruiser, and the Rover Merchant Vessel can have additional or special equipment as Commander’s Option Items up to 20% of its combat BPV, see (S3.2) for details and exceptions.
(PMSG2.432) The Death Cult Battlecruisers’ Drones are Speed 20, Type I-M.
(PMSG2.44) REFITS: None.
(PMSG2.45) PRIOR DAMAGE
(PMSG2.451) DEATH CULT BATTLECRUISER A: The Death Cult Battlecruiser has lost one shield. Roll 1D6 to randomly determine which shield is down. Apply 2D6 Damage to each of the remaining shields. Then apply 30 internal damage points on the DAC to the Death Cult Battlecruiser A.
(PMSG2.452) DEATH CULT BATTLECRUISER B: The Death Cult Battlecruiser has lost one shield. Roll 1D6 to randomly determine which shield is down. Apply 2D6 Damage to each of the remaining shields. Then apply 30 internal damage points on the DAC to the Death Cult Battlecruiser B.
(PMSG2.453) ROVER MERCHANT VESSEL: The Rover Merchant Vessel has lost all of its fighters. Roll 1D6 three times to randomly determine which shields are down (if you roll a shield that is already down, roll again). Apply 3D6 Damage to each of the remaining shields. Then apply 80 internal damage points on the DAC to the Rover Merchant Vessel.
(PMSG2.5) VICTORY CONDITIONS
ALLIANCE OF LORDS:
Beyond Belief: Both Death Cult Battlecruisers are destroyed and the Rover Merchant Vessel disengages!
Brilliant: One of the Death Cult Battlecruiser is destroyed, one of the Death Cult Battlecruiser disengages, and the Rover Merchant Vessel disengages.
Decisive: Both of the Death Cult Battlecruisers disengage and the Rover Merchant Vessel disengages.
Tactical: The Rover Merchant Vessel and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser disengages.
Marginal: The Rover Merchant Vessel disengages and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser is destroyed.
Defeat: The Rover Merchant Vessel is captured or destroyed and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser is destroyed.
DEATH CULT:
Beyond Belief: The Rover Merchant Vessel is captured and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser is destroyed!
Brilliant: The Rover Merchant Vessel is captured and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser disengages.
Decisive: The Rover Merchant Vessel and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser is destroyed.
Tactical: The Rover Merchant Vessel is destroyed and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser disengages.
Marginal: The Rover Merchant Vessel disengages and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser is destroyed.
Defeat: Both the Rover Merchant Vessel and the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser disengages.
ROVER:
Decisive: The Rover Merchant Vessel disengages.
Defeat: The Rover Merchant Vessel is captured or destroyed.
(PMSG2.6) VARIATIONS: The Death Cult could be exchanged for any empire that would benefit from the capture or destruction of a Rover Merchant Vessel. The Alliance of Lords could be exchanged for any empire that is friendly to the Rovers.
(PMSG2.7) BALANCE: The amount of damage to the shields of the Death Cult Battlecruisers can be increased or decreased. The amount of internal damage to the Death Cult Battlecruisers can be increased or decreased. The amount of damage to the shields of the Rover Merchant Vessel can be increased or decreased. The amount of internal damage to the Rover Merchant Vessel can be increased or decreased. Additional ships can be given to the Alliance of Lords. Additional ships can be given to the Death Cult. The starting position of the Rover Merchant Vessel and the Death Cult Battlecruisers can be changed to make the scenario more difficult or easy for one side.
(PMSG2.8) TACTICS: While badly damaged, the Rover Merchant Vessel can try to assist in the battle with any weapons it has remaining. It can also position its remaining shields to absorb damage from the Death Cult Battlecruisers. If possible, prepare a HET so you can position a strong shield toward a Death Cult Battlecruiser. Prepare a Wild Weasel (or two) to distract incoming seeking weapons. Prepare to repel boarding party attempts. Have negative tractor energy ready to counter tractor beams. Obviously, the Rover Merchant Vessel should be moving to disengage as quickly as possible.
The Death Cult Battlecruisers have the advantage of numbers. One Death Cult Battlecruiser can engage the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser while the other Death Cult Battlecruiser attacks the Rover Merchant Vessel. Alternatively, in order to speed up their mission objective, both Death Cult Battlecruisers can focus on the Rover Merchant Vessel. The Death Cult Battlecruisers should be maneuvering to position their remaining shields toward the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser. Use tractor beams on the Rover Merchant Vessel to control its movement as much as possible.
The Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser should be doing everything possible to assist the Rover Merchant Vessel in disengaging. In the rush to combat the Death Cult Battlecruisers, it is easy to forget this. With fresh shields and powerful Photon Torpedoes, the Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser has the advantage in combat. Counter any attempts by the Death Cult to tractor the Rover Merchant Vessel. Destroy any seeking weapons that the Death Cult Battlecruisers launch at the Rover Merchant Vessel. Be prepared to counter any Scatterpacks, Shuttle Bombs, or Suicide Shuttles launched by the Death Cult Battlecruisers. Maneuver to shoot through any down shields on the Death Cult Battlecruisers. Your Short-Range Cannons are effective against seeking weapons, but limited in range, so stay close to the Rover Merchant Vessel to make full use of them.

"If you don't stop moving, I'll force feed you some raw skunkduck eggs!!!"

Major Zilo sat in an oversized chair in Sickbay that could barely accommodate his immense weight. He fidgeted for a few moments before finally remaining still. All around him mechanical arms and devices worked to heal his wounds.

Doctor Sap stared at her patient with unforgiving eyes. The humanoid tree with yellow leaves was wearing a light blue gown, more for occupational appearance than any kind of functionality. She carefully checked each of the machines with her delicate root-like hands to make sure they were operating at peak efficiency.

"Not only did you suffer a severe puncture wound from Morgause's sword, but you received a laceration to your leg and one of your wings was ripped in half! That is not to mention the bruising and blunt force trauma you experienced as well. What were the two of you thinking? The Tactical Officer and the Leader of the Alpha Predators try to kill each other for the sake of some silly challenge? I thought the two of you were adults, not full grown children! You realize I'll have to report all this to Captain Elizabeth, don't you?"

Major Zilo gritted his crocodile-like teeth and listened to Doctor Sap. Honestly, he would rather have been in combat against one hundred foes than having to listen to this.

"Doctor, it's about honor, mettle, fortitude, and prowess. These are warriors' traits. I suppose you wouldn't understand. Don't these concepts mean anything to a Doctor?"

Doctor Sap frowned. One of her yellow leaves slowly fell from one of the branches that comprised her hair. She tilted her wooden head at an unusual angle.

"Doctors follow a code of conduct. We appreciate prowess and skill in the medical field. Doctors have mettle and fortitude when it comes to surgery, research, and working long hours without sleep. But what we don't do is bash each other's brains in to prove it! We are far more civilized than that!"

The machines surrounding Major Zilo stopped whirring. They slowly pulled back away from the patient. Doctor Sap moved closer to Major Zilo, bent over, and examined his wounds up close.

The puncture wound was sealed, the laceration was mended, and the wing reattached. His bruising would take time to heal.

"You're on the road to recovery," Doctor Sap informed Major Zilo. She raised one of her wooden eyebrows. "Not that you deserve to be after your recent behavior! You should be forced to sit in intensive care, out of commission, for three months as punishment!!"

Major Zilo once again gritted his sharp teeth. He thought of some way to change the subject.

"Doctor Sap? That is a nickname, is it not? What is your full name, Doctor? How did you come to serve the Alliance of Lords?"

Doctor Sap put away some tools and devices before answering. She was slow moving, in no rush at all. Major Zilo admired her hair made of yellow leaves. It reminded him of forests in the fall on many worlds.

"Sap is short for Sapling. It is the nickname given to me by my people due to my age. As humans have great difficulty pronouncing my true name, I kept it for my name. Humans often like to shorten long names into simple terms, so Sapling became Sap."

Doctor Sap examined a scan on the computer showing the interior of Major Zilo's body. She made odd crunching noises out of habit with her mouth as she studied the images.

"The Grove offers countless sights and pleasures. The Great Forest is beyond comparison. But what attracted me in life was the spectacular variety of life outside of the Grove. I wanted to learn about and study all those life forms. It has always been in my nature to mend, heal, and grow things. It was only natural for the next step to be a medical profession. Now, here I am!"

Major Zilo stared at Doctor Sap as she formed a wide smile on her trunk like head. The leader of the Alpha Predators could tell that she was very satisfied with where she was in life. Major Zilo respected everything that Doctor Sap had achieved. If only leading the Alpha Predators was as simple. Instead, he had to worry about dying every single day.

Major Zilo stood up. He donned his black uniform once more.

"Was there anything else, Doctor?"

Doctor Sap looked over Major Zilo once more before he left Sickbay. Treating an Archosaur was difficult. Medical information on their species was limited. Luckily, Doctor Sap had a long patient file to work with due to how long Major Zilo has been in the military.

"Just a thought, Major. I know that taking life and destroying others is what you do for a living. I can only imagine what it must be like to live your kind of life. And, after our recent battle with the Death Cult, I realize there is a definite need for people in your position. Just don't take life for granted, Major Zilo. It is a sacred thing. Imagine the time required for simple elements to come together to form complex systems. This is no simple task. To have consciousness, intelligence, sentience, to be aware that you are alive...these things are Invaluable."

PRESERVE LIFE WHENEVER YOU CAN, MAJOR ZILO, AND DESTROY IT...ONLY IF NECESSARY.

MERLIN
STARDATE 07.31.21

Link to previous Merlin entries

I'm happy to have left Starbase Dover, Captain Elizabeth thought as she waited for the Turbolift to reach the Bridge. Not that the rest and relaxation wasn't nice; it was certainly much needed after our battle with the Death Cult Battlecruisers. But Merlin belongs in deep space, that's where she was meant to be. Our crew has been replenished and we have some interesting new personalities aboard the Merlin. I am looking forward to seeing how the future unfolds with them with us. Ultrawarp Missiles have been restocked. Both Short Range Cannons have full ammunition again. We have new experimental technology that has been installed thanks to orders that came directly from Alliance Command. One part of that new technology is supposed "Advanced Technology" that will allow one of our Offensive Phasers to fire twice as two Defensive Phasers. But there is a problem with the phase coils burning out during the process. Daedalus is doing his best to work things out. Bless that old Clockwork Engineer. I don't know what I would do without him.

The door to the Turbolift opened. Captain Elizabeth saw several crewman rushing about the Bridge. There was tension in the air. Quickly, Captain Elizabeth took her Command Chair. Fortune was perched on the back of Captain Elizabeth's Command Chair and Lilith stood to the Captain's right. Lovecraft sat in his chair to the Captain's left side.

"Report."

Una paused before speaking. The beautiful Fair Folk Science Officer checked the results from the sensors one more time. Her long white hair was tucked behind her pointed ears.

"A heavily damaged Draco Hunter Wyrm is transmitting a Distress Call. We are approximately one hundred thousand kilometers away from the...ship. The beast is barely alive, Captain. It is dying. A skeleton crew is working inside of the creature since most of the crew is dead."

"Recommend we go to Red Alert, Elizabeth," Morgause advised. "Scanners don't show any other ships in the vicinity, but it's better to be safe than sorry."

"Do it," Captain Elizabeth replied. "Charge the Phaser Capacitors and begin arming the Photon Torpedoes. But I don't want to go in there with guns blazing. We're here to help. Raise Shields."

A Red Triangle began to flash brightly on the Bridge. A loud ringing sound could also be heard.

"You're doing the right thing, Captain," Fortune said in a low voice directly in Captain Elizabeth's ear. The solid black Puss Felinus was crouched on her seat right behind her. His tail snapped back and forth with excitement. "We have a duty to offer Humanitarian Aid."

"Beware, Captain," Lilith said while staring at the Dragonship on the View Screen. The Living Dragon was slowly getting larger and larger. The beautiful young woman radiated sexuality. "Things are not what they seem. Something did this to the Hunter Wyrm. Be prepared for the worst."

Captain Elizabeth spoke to her Draconic Helmsman. "Take us in slowly, Fafnir. And be ready to talk to your people if necessary. They may not believe we have...good intentions."

Elizabeth turned her head toward Brimstone, her Communications Officer. "Brim, transmit a continuous message to the Draco ship that we are approaching to provide assistance. Advise them that Merlin is answering her distress call."

Captain Elizabeth activated her Intercom to speak with Sickbay. "Doctor Sap, prepare to receive wounded. They are Draco, so be ready."

Doctor Sap started to object, so Captain Elizabeth quickly shut off the Intercom. She opened up a line to Engineering. "Daedalus, we are going to transport Draco survivors from the Hunter Wyrm. Be ready. Have a full squad of Security Guards there in case there is any trouble."

Alliance Command is going to be thrilled with our find. We have been fighting the Draco for so long, but have never had the chance to examine any of their warships. Now, the Alliance of Lords will be able to study a live specimen. Who knows? Alliance Command may be able to get some additional secrets from the Draco crew if they are cooperative after we save their lives...

"Captain, we're within transporter range," Ignis reported. The Will O Wisp Navigator blinked out of reality and back again.

"Attach a tractor beam and begin to..."

Suddenly, a Subspace Tunnel opened up off Merlin's starboard side. A ship slowly emerged. Her weapons were armed and her shields were raised.

"Captain, it's a Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser!!"

Captain Elizabeth sighed. What's the old saying?

NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED.

A Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser, Captain Elizabeth thought. I have been briefed on them, but never actually faced one in combat. Armaments include Subspace Rockets, Subspace Plasma Torpedoes, and Standard Phasers. But it is the strange Subspace Tunnels they are capable of creating that give them the true advantage. So why lay a trap with a heavily wounded Draco Hunter Wyrm? Well, the Netherwraith attack everyone, including the Alliance of Lords, the Alliance of Lords' Enemies, and the Alliance of Lords' Allies. These mysterious beings from Subspace seem to have their own agenda.

"Fafnir, bring us about. I want to be facing the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser so we can bring our Photon Torpedoes to bear. Keep us close to the injured Draco Hunter Wyrm."

Quickly, Merlin spun about to face the new intruder. She now stood protectively in-between the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser and the Draco Hunter Wyrm.

"Morgause, reinforce the forward shield. Ready Photon Torpedoes. Fire on my command. Prepare to launch an Ultra-Warp Missile. Distance to the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser?"

Morgause hastily looked over her computer console. The Guardian Knight wore her white ceremonial armor along with her sword and shield. "One hundred twenty thousand kilometers, Elizabeth. Well outside of Overload Range."

Captain Elizabeth activated the Intercom to Engineering. "Daedalus. Prep a Wild Weasel. I want it ready Yesterday. Understood? Have Reserve Power on standby. We may need a sudden burst in speed."

"You got it, Lassie!" the Clockwork Engineer responded with his mechanical cigar sticking out of his mouth. Puffs of smoke erupted from the smoke stacks coming out of his back.

Elizabeth switched the Intercom to the Training Den. This was the home of the Alpha Predators.

"Major Zilo. Have your men protect our Weapons and Power Systems. Our shields haven't been breached, but I want to be ready. Send two squads of your Marines to the Transporter Room. If we get the opportunity, they will perform Hit and Run Raids on the Netherwraith's Subspace Rockets and Subspace Plasma Torpedo. Is that understood?"

"Yes, Ma'am!"

Captain Elizabeth stared with her blue eyes at the ghost-like ship threatening the Merlin. Her long blonde hair was tied above her head. She turned to her Science Officer.

"Una, anything from the Laboratories, Sensors, or Scanners? Even the slightest bit of intel could decide the outcome of this conflict."

The beautiful Fair Folk stared into the binocular-like device on her station. She spoke in a loud voice without looking up.

"I'm reading a build-up of energy in the aft section of the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser. The pattern and power signature match the configuration of a Plasma Torpedo."

What are their intentions? Are they just trying to scare us off? Do they mean to kill the Hunter Wyrm? Were they the ones who did this to the Dragonship or did they arrive after the fact? Do they mean to destroy the Merlin?

Captain Elizabeth glanced at Brimstone, her Communications Officer. The lovely Butterfly Woman had a large metal device sticking out of one of her green ears.

"Brim, broadcast that we are on a rescue mission. We are responding to the Draco's Distress..."

Without warning, Three Rockets shot out of the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser. All Three Rockets disappeared from view as they submerged into Subspace.

I GUESS THAT ANSWERS THE QUESTION ABOUT THEIR INTENTIONS...

"Fire all Photon Torpedoes! Fire Phasers! Launch the Ultra-Warp Missile! They started this fight, but we'll be the ones to finish it! Brace for impact!!"

Powerful bolts of white light shot out of Merlin, followed by red beams of energy. The Bridge Crew waited in anticipation to see if their strike hit its mark.

"One Photon Torpedo hit!" Morgause reported with excitement. Her eyes bulged large as she stared at her display. "Phasers also hit, but only minor damage scored against the Netherwraith's forward shield."

Subspace Rockets possess commensurate destructive potential as our Photon Torpedoes, Captain Elizabeth thought. But data collected by Alliance Command indicates there is a delay before striking the target due to having to travel through subspace. Any moment now, the three Subspace Rockets launched by the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser will impact Merlin...

Suddenly, Merlin shook from the impact of the Subspace Rockets. The Bridge Crew was thrown to the left, and then to the right. Throughout the hallways of Merlin, crewmen lost their footing and stumbled to the ground. The red triangle continued to flash and ring loudly.

"Two of the Subspace Rockets struck us," Una reported in a calm yet loud voice. The Fair Folk Science Officer was unusually composed, even in the heat of battle. Her white hair drifted behind her. "Reinforcement absorbed most of the damage. Still, our forward shield is down by thirty percent."

"They're launching their Subspace Plasma Torpedo!!" Morgause yelled.

Immediately after launch, the Subspace Plasma Torpedo disappeared from view and entered subspace.

Lovecraft turned and spoke to Captain Elizabeth in a soft voice. The humanoid Vampire Squid was carefully monitoring the conflict with the displays on his chair. "Alliance Command Data reports that Subspace Plasmas are unusually slow. We have a moment before impact that we can take advantage of."

If the Subspace Plasma Torpedo strikes us, it will breach our shields for sure. We can't allow that to happen. But the Plasma Torpedo has to emerge from subspace in order to impact...

"Fafnir, tilt Merlin so that our second shield is facing toward the Subspace Plasma Torpedo. If it strikes us, we'll have a fresh shield to take the blow."

Fafnir rapidly did as he was told, rotating Merlin in the specified direction.

Captain Elizabeth opened the Intercom to Engineering.

"Daedalus, get ready to launch the Wild Weasel. On my command."

"Una, monitor the sensors and labs. I want to know the second the Plasma Torpedo emerges from subspace."

It's a good thing we are barely moving, Captain Elizabeth thought to herself. The Wild Weasel won't function at a high speed.

"Plasma Torpedo is emerging from subspace," Una reported while staring into her binocular-like device.

The crew on the Bridge of the Merlin stared in awe at the massive red ball of plasma energy slowly approaching. It was like a crimson specter of death coming to claim its harvest.

NOW, DAEDALUS! LAUNCH THE WILD WEASEL!!!

"DAMAGE CONTROL! RESTORE OUR AFT SHIELD RIGHT AWAY! GET THE INJURED TO DOCTOR SAP IN SICKBAY!!"

The Netherwraith knew we were going to launch a Wild Weasel. While we distracted their Subspace Plasma Torpedo to prevent it from impacting, they opened one of their Subspace Tunnels to get behind us. They emerged from subspace and obliterated our aft shield with the phasers that they had saved from their initial attack. Curse me for a fool! I didn't have a High Energy Turn prepared. We returned fire with both Short Range Cannons, but they both missed because they were right behind us. Remind me to inform Alliance Command what terrible weapons the Short Range Cannons are against starships...

"Damage Report!"

Una reported quickly after examining the flashing lights on her console. "We lost both Defensive Phasers, one Auxiliary Power Reactor, one Impulse Engine, a Tractor Beam, a Transporter, and various Hull. There is also minor damage to the Warp Engines. Daedalus and his team are doing their best to contain the fires."

"I'll go give them a hand," Lilith stated as she began to walk toward the Turbolift.

Captain Elizabeth formed a confused look on her face. "You have Engineering Skills...?"

"Let's just say I have an affinity for fire," Lilith said with a wicked grin. The Turbolift door closed and she was on her way.

"Netherwraith Boarding Parties have appeared on Merlin!" Ignis reported. The Will O Wisp blinked on and off. "Major Zilo and the Alpha Predators are fighting them off, but they are having difficulty because of the ethereal physiology of the intruders."

What exactly are we fighting? Captain Elizabeth thought to herself.

"We're still in this fight!' Morgause said in a loud, inspiring voice. The Tactical Officer's adrenaline was pumping. "Now that our Wild Weasel has done its job, we can get moving again. Once we gain speed, we can take the fight back to the Netherwraith!"

Captain Elizabeth stared at the View Screen with determination. Two sets of white dots raced anxiously underneath it, going from a center position out to each side. "Fafnir, increase speed and bring us about. Keep our fifth shield facing toward the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser as much as possible."

"Morgause, rearm the Photon Torpedoes. Recharge the Phaser Banks. Ready another Ultra Warp Missile for launch."

Merlin gained speed and began to turn around. But by this time, the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser had plotted an escape course along the z-axis.

Lovecraft turned toward his Captain once more. The humanoid Vampire Squid had considered going below to aid the rest of the crew, but decided to stay on the Bridge. He said in a soft voice, "It will take them the same amount of time to rearm their Subspace Rockets as it takes us to rearm our Photon Torpedoes. But it will take them even longer to build up enough energy to launch another Subspace Plasma Torpedo. We have an advantage of timing...if we can get to them first."

"Pursuit course. Maximum speed."

"They're opening up another Subspace Tunnel!" Morgause reported. "It may give them enough time to rearm their Subspace Plasma Torpedo."

Captain Elizabeth spun around to face her beautiful Science Officer. The Fair Folk had an expressionless look on her slender face. The stars in her eyes shined bright.

"Can we go in there after them?"

"I highly recommend against it, Captain. If the Subspace Tunnel collapses while we are still inside of it, Merlin will surely be crushed. However, it may be possible for a seeking weapon to pursue them inside of the Subspace Tunnel."

"Launch an Ultra-Warp Missile. Track its progress and record all data inside of the Subspace Tunnel. Alliance Command can thank me later for all the data our scientists can analyze."

A small Missile shot out of Merlin moving many times the maximum speed of a normal starship. It dived into the Subspace Tunnel after the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser.

"Una, calculate the exit point for the Subspace Tunnel. Patch the coordinates into the Helm. Fafnir, maximum speed to cut of the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser."

"Morgause, Overload All Photon Torpedoes. Hold them until I give the command to Fire."

LET'S FINISH OUR LITTLE DANCE, ONCE AND FOR ALL, SHALL WE?

"FIRE!!!!!!"

We caught the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser just as it was emerging from the Subspace Tunnel. At point blank range, we unleashed Overloaded Photons, Phasers, and Short Range Cannons, severely ravaging their starship. To my surprise, both Short Range Cannons hit the target. They returned fire with their Phasers, punching a hole in our sixth shield. A few seconds later, the Subspace Rockets they fired back at us emerged from subspace and hit us through our down shield. Merlin suffered major damage, the equivalent of what we did to them. Then the unexpected happened. The Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser attached a tractor beam and prepared to launch their Subspace Plasma Torpedo...

"Daedalus, I need all the Negative Tractor Energy you can generate, RIGHT NOW!!"

The Clockwork Engineer replied in a fatigued voice, "Elizabeth, that last shot really knocked out our teeth! I've got power systems down all over the ship and the Warp Engines are heavily damaged. Reserve Power is depleted. I know it's not much Negative Tractor Energy, but I'M GIVIN' HER ALL I'VE GOT!!"

Captain Elizabeth cut off the Intercom to Engineering and frowned. Beads of sweat raced down her forehead.

Merlin twisted and pulled against the Netherwraith's tractor beam, but she was caught like a fly in a web.

"Una, how much time do we have?"

The Fair Folk Science Officer was unnaturally composed for such a serious life and death situation. "Less than a minute, Captain. The energy build up required to launch their Subspace Plasma is nearly complete. Once it enters subspace, it is only a matter of seconds before it emerges and strikes Merlin."

The factual bluntness of Una's words disturbed Captain Elizabeth. Or perhaps it was the lack of emotion in her demeanor?

"Morgause, weapons?"

Morgause slammed her fist into her console in frustration. The Guardian Knight's white armor was stained with blood, soot, and dirt. "All Photon Torpedoes have been destroyed! We only have one Phaser left! Both Short Range Cannons are gone! The Ultra Warp Missile Rack is in pieces!"

We're not going to be able to fight our way out of this one. There has to be a solution...there has to be!

"Lovecraft, assessment and suggestions?"

The crimson humanoid Vampire Squid looked grim. He stared at Captain Elizabeth with the two light blue orbs on the sides of his head. "When that Subspace Plasma Torpedo strikes us, Merlin's Fate will be Sealed. You can authorize the Self Destruct Sequence to take the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser with us. At this close range, they will not survive the explosion. Or you can signal our Surrender to try to save what remains of the Crew."

Captain Elizabeth couldn't believe her ears. A horrified expression formed on her face.

"Surrender?? To a silent enemy that attacked us unprovoked while we were on a mercy mission? Never! I'd rather Die!!"

"You may," Lovecraft replied. "But your Crew may not. As their Captain, your decision must be what is best for your Crew and for Merlin. Your own personal feelings must be set aside, Elizabeth. As your First Officer, it is my job to present you with all the options, no matter how far-fetched, how unreasonable, or how...unpalatable, they may be."

Captain Elizabeth gritted her teeth and stared at the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser on the View Screen. Her blue eyes narrowed.

"May the Most High have Mercy on our Souls," Fortune said from his perched position right behind Captain Elizabeth on her Command Chair.

Captain Elizabeth gave him a wicked look.

"Save your Prayers, Chaplain."

WE'RE NOT DEAD YET.

The Draco Hunter Wyrm came out of nowhere. Merlin and the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser's Sensors were so badly damaged, we failed to pick up the dragon approaching at high speed. The Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser quickly shifted targets, launching its Subspace Plasma Torpedo at the Hunter Wyrm. The weapon had little effect as the space dragon had fresh shields to absorb the impact.

Claws slashed diagonally and vertically. Bites savagely ripped apart the hull. Phasers stabbed through like arrows. Flame breath blew a Plasma Torpedo that incinerated its target.

In the end, there was nothing left of the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser except a smoking, burning husk.

Captain Elizabeth stared nervously at the Draco Hunter Wyrm on the View Screen. Although the Alliance of Lords had long been at war with the Draco, she was still fascinated by the beings they used as starships. It was incomprehensible that such a thing was possible even once, must less on the scale necessary to create a whole fleet of warmongering dragons. Now, here was a Hunter Wyrm up close, so close that Elizabeth could make out the scales on her body. And all Captain Elizabeth could think was: she is Beautiful.

The View Screen shifted and morphed, until Captain Elizabeth found herself staring at the Captain of the Draco Hunter Wyrm. She was a small Dragonling, but the stare in her eyes conveyed the horrors of war that she had experienced. The Draco Captain looked down at Fafnir for a moment, saying nothing. Fafnir lowered his head sheepishly. Did she consider Fafnir a traitor? Was she proud of what he had accomplished? Was she confused as to why a Draco would ever join the Alliance of Lords? Her cold stare betrayed none of these answers. She looked back at Captain Elizabeth.

"Captain. We received your Distress Call. I am Captain Naga of the Space Dragon Druk. It appears we arrived just in time."

Captain Elizabeth nodded in appreciation. "Greetings Captain Naga. I am Captain Elizabeth of the starship, Merlin. You just saved all of our lives. You have our thanks."

"No, it is you who have our gratitude. Without your intervention, our sister would surely be dead, slain by the Netherwraith. Most Alliance of Lords Captains would have left her to die. But you chose differently. Why?"

Captain Elizabeth glanced at Fafnir and then at Fortune. The all black Puss Felinus Chaplain was still curled up on the back of her Command Chair.

"We have a duty to offer humanitarian aid. We cannot in good conscience leave living beings to suffer and die. Not if we have the power to save them."

Captain Naga looked around the Bridge of the Merlin. It was in shambles from their recent battle. "It appears that your decision has wrecked your ship. You have lost many crew members. I am sorry for your losses. As Captain, you made the decision to sacrifice their lives in order to save a Draco Dragonship. Never before has this been done. It will not be forgotten. The Draco...We...I...am indebted to you for your actions today."

Captain Elizabeth was speechless. She expected the Druk to tear apart what remained of Merlin. Isn't that what you were supposed to do to your enemy in war? And yet here was a Draco Captain saying she owed a debt of gratitude to Captain Elizabeth.

Captain Naga continued. "We will take the wounded Dragonship from here. The Merlin is free to go, with our good wishes. You have made a friend this day, Captain Elizabeth. I will not forget. Call on the Druk for assistance in the future, and, if we are able, we will answer your call."

The View Screen began to shimmer and change, reverting back to the view of the stars. But Captain Naga's lingering voice left one last message.

EVEN IN BITTER WAR, THERE CAN BE FRIENDSHIP.
