Thanks Gregory. I appreciate it.

Yes, most excellent storytelling. One point I'm contused on is who / what attacked the first (wounded) Draco Hunter Wyrm? Surely it can't be the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser, because the Draco would have left them battered and bruised, no? The Netherwraith seemed to be factory-fresh when they attacked the Merlin.

And just a passing thought --- I'm not sure I'd want to face anything that can do THAT to a Draco......

Thanks Garth. It means a lot.

Yes, exactly what did that to the Draco Hunter Wyrm was left out on purpose. Did the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser just happen upon the scene after the fact? Did it hear the same distress call that Merlin heard?

I'm sure the remaining Draco crew aboard the severely damaged Dragonship could have revealed what did this to them...had they not been rescued by the Druk and dragged off for repairs/healing.

Well, I wait with bated breath wondering who/what was able to attack a Draco and survive/escape. I really want to know where they went, so I can go in the other direction, far far away.

MERLIN
STARDATE 08.14.21

Link to previous Merlin entries

Starbase Dover. Captain Elizabeth's Debriefing. In a small empty room, she sits across from three important figures seated at a table. The mood is so tense you could cut through it with a knife.

"So you admit to aiding the enemy?"

General Brom was a hard, middle-aged man with numerous facial scars. He never smiled.

Captain Elizabeth shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

"I don't admit to anything, General Brom. You have heard me relay the events as they transpired. Merlin answered a Distress Call. We went to offer Humanitarian Aid."

General Brom's right hand formed into a clenched fist. "Humanitarian Aid? One does not offer Humanitarian Aid to a ruthless empire that the Alliance of Lords is At War with, Captain Elizabeth! Or do you think it is proper for an Alliance of Lords Heavy Cruiser to risk itself to save a severely damaged Enemy Vessel? Do you think the Draco would have done the same for Us?"

Captain Elizabeth went silent. Of course, the Draco would not have. They would have relished watching the Alliance of Lords crew slowly perish.

"I could not simply stand by and let them Die."

General Brom gritted his teeth. His tone was fierce and angry. "Captain Elizabeth, do you know how many civilians and personnel a single Draco Hunter Wyrm has slain? Thousands. I have seen these people dying myself firsthand! I have held good friends in my arms as they slipped away into death! What do you think that wounded Hunter Wyrm is going to do once it is healed and repaired?"

Captain Elizabeth was silent once more. She knew the answer, but she didn't want to say it.

"Yes, you know, don't you, Captain? It is going to strike out against Alliance of Lords Colonies, Bases, Freighters, and Starships. Captain Elizabeth, that Draco Hunter Wyrm is going to KILL many more people! Since you saved it from dying, ALL those Deaths are now on your Head!!"

Captain Elizabeth's gaze met General Brom's. Neither one blinked.

"Calm yourself, General," Admiral Waluah said in a composed voice. She was a dark skinned figure who immediately commanded respect. The Admiral was also Captain Elizabeth's longtime friend.

"As we all know, each Alliance of Lords Captain has the prerogative to make what they believe to be the best decisions based on the circumstances of their particular situation. We don't have an all-encompassing Prime Directive that drives our actions. This gives each Captain the freedom to act according to their own experiences, judgements, morals, and training. Given that, I stand by Captain Elizabeth's decisions in regard to the wounded Draco Hunter Wyrm."

Captain Elizabeth couldn't help but to smile at Admiral Waluah. She was thankful for her continual support.

"Indeed," Commander Matsumoto added. The Commander was known to be a fair man. "If I were in Captain Elizabeth's shoes, I might have done the same. I certainly would have gone to answer the Distress Call. Perhaps I would have offered aid to the Draco Hunter Wyrm. Perhaps I would have let it die. Withholding assistance is not the same as firing Photon Torpedoes to slay it. You are simply letting events run their natural course had you not been on the scene. However, it is not this decision that concerns me, Captain Elizabeth. It is your decision to engage the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser."

Captain Elizabeth recalled the events of the battle in her mind. But what stood out most in her thoughts was her crew members dying.

"As I have stated on record, the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser attacked us first without provocation. In this situation, Merlin has a right to defend herself."

Admiral Waluah nodded silently in agreement.

"Defending yourself is one thing," Commander Matsumoto replied. "But did your report not state that you chased the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser after she had already turned away? That Merlin plotted an intercept course so she could attack the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser the moment she emerged from the Subspace Tunnel?"

"She had already fired all her weapons," Captain Elizabeth answered. "The Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser was moving away so it could recycle its weapons. If left alone, Merlin would surely have come under attack again. I had to head off our assailant before her primary weapon, the Subspace Plasma Torpedo, was ready to launch again. Merlin was already damaged from their initial assault. She would certainly not have survived a hit from the Subspace Plasma Torpedo. Especially in addition to the Subspace Rockets and Phasers the Netherwraith Heavy Cruiser possessed. So Merlin's interception was an act to save my crew, a tactical decision to win the battle as quickly as possible before more casualties occurred."

"And how did that go for you?" General Brom said sarcastically. It took all of Captain Elizabeth's self control to keep her anger in check. "Merlin has been gutted once again. A majority of your crew is dead, Captain. I wonder why this keeps happening to you? Could it be because of the types of choices and decisions that you make? Is that why Merlin is docked for repairs over and over again? Is that why there is another Draco Hunter Wyrm roaming about out there who could have been permanently removed from this war?!"

Admiral Waluah was going to stop General Brom's verbal abuse. She did not like seeing one of her prized Captains suffer. But the Admiral decided against it, instead letting Captain Elizabeth defend herself on her own.

Captain Elizabeth looked down sadly for a moment. She remembered the face of every crew member that died under her command. Then she looked back at General Brom.

"With all due respect, General. I mourn for the loss of each member of my crew that perished. They trusted their lives to me and they paid the ultimate price. That burden is mine alone to bear. But if I had to replay the events of that day, I would make the exact same decisions. I acted in the most humane way possible, in defense of living beings who could not defend themselves, who called out to anyone who might hear their cry for help. Although it cost me my ship and much of my crew, I believe I made the right decisions that day. I have no regrets."

Admiral Waluah, General Brom, and Commander Matsumoto stared at Captain Elizabeth for a long quiet moment. Then they all stood up at once. There was nothing more to discuss.

"You are dismissed, Captain Elizabeth."

Captain Elizabeth walked out of the room proudly. She appeared confident and strong. But within, nothing could be further from the truth. You see, in her mind, she knew that she could have saved the lives of her crew by turning away from the wounded Draco Hunter Wyrm that day. And she cursed herself for not doing so.

CAPTAIN ELIZABETH LIED TO THE COMMITTEE ABOUT HAVING NO REGRETS...BUT MOST OF ALL, SHE LIED TO HERSELF.

By Gregory S Flusche (Vandar) on Saturday, August 14, 2021 - 12:28 pm: Edit

Did She Lie.. She is sticking to Her own Code of Ethics. And perhaps peace can be achieved between the Hunter Worms :)

Regret can be a tricky thing. Sometimes it plays tricks on the mind...

By Stewart Frazier (Frazikar3) on Saturday, August 14, 2021 - 07:25 pm: Edit

There are always regrets as one can see clearer with hindsight on decisions made (although determining how THAT decision would have played out is another difficulty) ...

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Saturday, August 14, 2021 - 09:12 pm: Edit

Well, people are flawed and driven by ethics and emotions. Even Vulcans are, no matter how much they insist "it's all logical". Logic can be used to justify pretty much anything, if you wish. Your only other choice is to crew the ship with emotionless robots. Let's ask Commander Adama how well that works out for the rest of the universe.

MERLIN
STARDATE 08.22.21

Link to previous Merlin entries

While Merlin is docked at Starbase Dover for repairs, Captain Elizabeth meets with Major Zilo, Morgause, and Dusk in her Ready Room. The topic is of grave importance, one that could well decide the future for Merlin and her Crew: Netherwraiths.

"We've all read the reports," Captain Elizabeth stated plainly as she gazed at the three people seated in front of her. Major Zilo required a special, reinforced chair that could support his immense weight. "This meeting is to ask questions, seek clarifications, or bring up anything not contained in the reports."

"The Netherwraith Boarding Parties were wearing thick armor," Major Zilo growled. He recalled in his mind what happened during their last battle. One of Merlin's shields went down and the Netherwraith Boarding Parties transported over. "A single Phaser burst was not enough to penetrate their protective gear. However, repeated blasts could rupture the outer layer, especially if the setting is on Kill."

"My Mystic Sword could penetrate it," Morgause added. The Guardian Knight Tactical Officer was clad in her ceremonial white armor. Her sword hung from her hip. "But I am only one person. And I have to engage the Netherwraith at close range to use it."

Major Zilo looked at Morgause and then turned toward Captain Elizabeth. He snarled, "My talons were also capable of tearing apart their suits. But I share the same drawbacks as Morgause. I must get close and I am only one person."

The room was quiet for several moments before Dusk continued the conversation. The solid black Chief of Security composed entirely of Dark Matter spoke in an eerie voice.

"I believe their armored suits served a dual purpose. For protection, as we have stated, but also to survive in our environment. Once their suits were breached, the Netherwraith within was released."

"They can fly," Morgause said. "But it seems they can only survive in our environment for several minutes before fading away. Whether they perish or go back to their dimension is up for debate."

"I'm not interested in speculation," Captain Elizabeth replied. "I want facts. Solid facts that I can base my command decisions upon. And first hand experience dealing with these...entities."

Dusk nodded before mentioning, "In their natural form, the Netherwraith are immune to Phaser fire. It's a good thing they can't last for long in our climate."

Major Zilo roared in a loud, intimidating voice. "But there are other concerns. When freed from their protective suits, the Netherwraith can release an unearthly howl. Anyone hearing this frightening howl is instantly paralyzed, or worse, knocked unconscious. It is the ability to affect an entire area of marines at the same time that concerns me the most."

"It gets worse," Morgause said in a harsh voice. "When the Netherwraith place their ghostly hands on one of our crew members, they can literally suck the life out of them. Right before my eyes, I saw members of my team age to 60, 70, and 80 years old. Doctor Sap is trying to reverse the effects, but has been unsuccessful so far."

Dusk interjected with his echoing voice. "I lost many Security Officers in this manner. Hawthorne, Jacobs, O'reilly, McKnight, Labowski, and more. Fortunately, neither their howl nor their life draining touch could affect my Dark Matter form."

Captain Elizabeth was greatly concerned. She was facing an enemy that had a clear advantage in physical combat. The odds had to be balanced somehow.

"Major Zilo. I want an improved type of Phaser that is capable of penetrating their armor with one shot. Use all available resources at Starbase Dover, including their Research and Development Department. We also need a ranged weapon that can affect the Netherwraith in their natural form. I refuse to allow our crewmen to be completely vulnerable to them once they are released from their suits. Morgause. I want some form of protection that will counter their howls and life draining abilities. We have to protect our crew in some manner. Try to think outside the box and be innovative. The solution may not be as simple as a protective suit. Dusk. Cross reference all reported Netherwraith conflicts with the Alliance of Lords. Research each case, specifically all Boarding Party attempts. Compare and note any differences or similarities to what we experienced. Utilize Starbase Dover's resources as needed. We will meet again in one week. I want progress, gentlemen, not excuses. The lives of Merlin's crew are in your hands. Is that understood?"

"Yes Ma'am!"

DISMISSED.

RAJA OFU HEAVY CRUISER SSD
Link to the Raja Ofu Heavy Cruiser SSD

THE PRIME SECTOR

RAJA OFU SHIPS
(PMR22.1) HEAVY CRUISER (CA):

The Raja Ofu Heavy Cruiser was a living starship that carried four Bombus Fighters. While small compared to other Prime Sector Heavy Cruisers, the Raja Ofu Heavy Cruiser was armed to the teeth with offensive weaponry. Carrying One Hellbore, Two Fusion Beams, Two Wide Offensive Phasers, Two Wide Phaser Gatlings, and One Fusion Drone Rack, the Raja Ofu Heavy Cruiser was particularly deadly at close range. Opponents of the Raja Ofu Heavy Cruiser often found themselves facing a Scatterpack about to release Six Fusion Drones, each one charged with fusion energy. However, it is the advanced Bombus Fighters that typically made the difference in battle. These Living Fighters were able to generate energy like a starship, allowing them to utilize that energy for a variety of combat roles.

DESIGNER NOTES:

The Raja Ofu is a Prime Sector Conversion of both the Hydrans and the Hivers. The two empires have been combined to form a truly unique empire. Like the Hivers, the Raja Ofu employ smaller ships along with fighters that possess their own energy. Raja Ofu starships have a strong central hull like the Hydrans.

The Raja Ofu are armed with both Hellbores and Fusion Beams, but quantities have been reduced to match Prime Sector standards. It is typical for the Raja Ofu to use a combination of the two weapons on their starships, but specialized Raja Ofu designs will feature a focus on a singular weapon. Raja Ofu Fighters also employ Hellbores and Fusion Beams.

A New Weapon, developed just for the Raja Ofu, is the Fusion Drone. This is a standard Type-I Drone with an energized Fusion Warhead. It delivers more damage, but must be energized before launch. In addition, the unstable nature of the energized Drone makes it easier to destroy and shortens its overall endurance. Fusion Drones may be loaded into a Scatterpack. The intent behind the Fusion Drone is to give the Raja Ofu a Seeking Weapon, so that their Tactics will differ substantially from the Hydrans.

To hint at its Hiver Origins, the Raja Ofu employ Wide Phasers. These Wide Phasers have been revised so that their Range Brackets match Alpha Sector standards. The Raja Ofu also possess a Prime Sector version of the Hydran’s PH-G, the Wide Phaser Gatling.

Raja Ofu Fighters are larger than Hiver Fighters on average. This means more damage points to be destroyed and more armaments. It doesn’t necessarily mean more spaces. Raja Ofu Fighters also possess more energy to spend than standard Hiver Fighters.

The Raja Ofu Heavy Cruiser only possesses 62 internals. However, the combination of its Fighters is 64 internals. 62 internals plus 64 internals equals 126 internals total, which is roughly the average for Prime Sector Heavy Cruisers. It is clear that the Raja Ofu Player must properly utilize their Fighters, since they are technically “part of the ship.”

While small and easily destroyed, Raja Ofu starships are quick with a Reduced Movement Cost and an Excellent Turn Mode.

Raja Ofu starships have a plethora of weapons available to them, but limited energy to use them. The Raja Ofu Player must plan and choose wisely when its comes to energy usage.

Physically, the Raja Ofu are humungous humanoid Bumblebees that weigh between 200-400 pounds. They are gigantic compared to the Hivers they were partially based on.

In conclusion, the Raja Ofu are a strange combination of Hydrans and Hivers. They have small, fast ships which employ Hydran Weaponry, but carry Hiver-like Fighters. Fusion Drones add to their Tactical Game, giving them a depth of play that goes beyond both the Hydrans and the Hivers. As an empire, the Raja Ofu employ living ships that possess Hiver-like advantages. While not relevant to the base Raja Ofu Heavy Cruiser, these advantages will play an important role as future Raja Ofu SSD’s are presented.

EAGLE'S EGG - STARDATE 10.24.21
Link to previous Eagle's Egg logs

The long night has come. The greatest civilization in history has fallen. Now one ship, one crew, have vowed to drive back the night and rekindle the light of civilization. On the Eagle's Egg... Hope lives again.

The weary old man stared at the holographic projection of documents written so long ago, yet still vitally relevant today. The Constitution. The basis for the space faring organization he used to serve. Before it was destroyed. The old man let out a loud sigh. He turned off the hologram and sat alone in darkness.

I still can't believe it's all gone. Everything I fought for my entire life. All my friends, family, and colleagues. I was part of the greatest civilization to ever exist in space. It was an honor and a privilege. And now...it's all gone. Except for this ship. And the Special Cargo we are carrying. It must be protected at all costs. It must be delivered to its final destination. The Egg must be allowed to hatch.

The old man thought of the past. The very beginning of his adventures. His beloved crew.

We were all so young. So inexperienced. So hungry for life. A Japanese Helmsman. A Russian Navigator. An African Communications Officer. A Scottish Engineer. A Country Doctor. An Alien Science Officer. And me. So reckless, so headstrong, so willful,...so brave. Little did we suspect how the future would turn out. We lived our lives as best as we could. But now I have one more task ahead of me. Perhaps the most important task of my entire life. And I can't let go and pass on until that objective has been achieved. I refuse to.

The door to the Conference Room opened. In walked a bold, young man who was barely eighteen years of age. Although the room was pitch dark, he had no problems seeing the old man.

His skin was solid black. His hair pure white. But most disturbing were his eyes which appeared to be blind because they were milky white.

"Forgive me for interrupting, Admiral Tiberius. There is a situation developing on the Bridge. I would greatly appreciate your insight."

The old man nodded slightly at the call of duty. "Captain Zeno, how many times have I told you to call me Jim."

The young man frowned. "It wouldn't be appropriate, sir. Especially in front of the crew. A person of your stature needs to be shown the proper respect at all times."

At the mention of stature, the old man grumbled. He stood up slowly, making sure he had solid footing. Then he slowly moved over to Captain Zeno.

"Of course I'll be happy to advise you on your current predicament. That's why I'm here. Just try to learn and absorb everything you can, Zeno. And always remember..."

I WON'T BE HERE FOREVER.

The long night has come. The greatest civilization in history has fallen. Now one ship, one crew, have vowed to drive back the night and rekindle the light of civilization. On the Eagle's Egg... Hope lives again.

The Elder sat in his dimly lit chambers, motionless, staring into the flame of a single candle. His mind was still, his emotions calm. With closed eyes, he reached out with his psychic abilities, sensing the cascading emotions of the rest of the crew on the ship. They would need him on this journey.

Across the room, a beautiful young woman stirred from a deep slumber. She let out a light yawn. Sitting up, she stared at the Elder with her violet eyes, noting her environment, the time, and what he was doing. She adjusted her long, light orange hair so that it was tucked neatly behind her pointed ears. Quietly, she walked over and knelt down opposite to the Elder. She pulled a soft blanket around her fair skin for comfort.

"Father, how long was I asleep?"

The Elder opened his eyes, He stared at his daughter for several moments without saying anything. His pointed ears matched her own.

"Six hours, five minutes, and twenty four seconds, T'Peve. You must have been very tired from your duty shift. You fell asleep while I was talking. I put you to bed and pulled the blanket over you."

"Thank you, Father."

T'Peve stared into the flame. Her mind was not as calm as the Elder's. In fact, it was the opposite. Chaotic emotions flashed like wildfire throughout her thoughts. She was worried about the mission, the crew, her duties, her father, the ship, and the Egg. Her violet eyes vibrated with stress.

"Calm yourself, T'Peve," the Elder said in a low, calm voice. "I sense your anxiety from here. Have faith that everything will work out as it is supposed to. You will play your role according to the skills and abilities that I have given you."

T'Peve tried to calm down, but her emotions were too alive. She looked downward, fearing that she had disappointed her father.

"Father, why did you give me this form? You could have made me look like anything you wished. Yet you gave me this appearance. I don't understand why."

"Isn't the answer, obvious, T'Peve? I made you in my Image. You are a reflection of me in countles ways, much more than mere appearance."

T'Peve's voice crackled with hesitation and frustration. "It's just that...sometimes I feel like an outcast among the crew. They look at me differently...treat me differently...because of who and what I am. There are times...when I wish I was just like them. It is not...easy...for me."

"I understand," the Elder said in a comforting voice. "I, too, experienced the same thing when I was young like you. That was long, long ago. But I learned over time, to accept what I was, and to accept others as they were. I did not try to change them and I did not try to change myself. We are all what we were meant to be, T'Peve, including you."

T'Peve went quiet. She did not like the answer, yet she knew it to be true. Her emotions prevented her from accepting it.

"Father, did you have difficulty controlling your emotions when you were younger? I try to focus on logic at all times, but there are times when I am...unsuccessful."

The Elder recalled his past in his mind. "Yes, I did, T'Peve. But not to the extent that you are now. I was brought up on our homeworld...before it was destroyed. Logic has been with me since I was a child. But you were brought up on this ship. I imbued you with emotions far stronger than my own. That is both positive and negative. But you must learn to control your emotions, lest they control you. Always remember, emotions that run amok can lead to a severe type of insanity. If this happens, instead of being an asset to the rest of the crew, you will become a detriment."

T'Peve nodded in understanding. "I will do my best Father. I want to make you proud of me."

The Elder reached out and put out the candle flame with two fingers. He slowly stood up. Then he reached out with one wrinkled hand and pulled his daughter to her feet.

"I already am proud of you, my daughter. I always will be, regardless of what transpires. Never forget that."

The Elder asked the replicator for a cup of hot tea and it instantly appeared.

T'Peve watched her father sip his tea. She feared that she might not have much longer with him.

"Father, why is logic the governing principle in the universe?"

The Elder quietly sipped his tea before responding.

"Logic is the beginning of Wisdom, my daughter, but never the ending. Always remember, Unbridled Logic is extremely dangerous. Pure Logic can be used to justify the most horrendous things in life, things that must never be allowed to happen. Instead, you must constantly temper your Logic with Emotion. Pure Logic possesses no conscience. Conscience stems from Emotion. Empathy, Compassion, Love...all these things come from Emotion. They are just as important, if not more so, than Logic. That is why I gave them to you."

T'Peve struggled to absorb her father's words. Some of it still made no sense to her.

"But why did you make my emotions so strong, Father? Stronger even than your own."

The Elder smiled. "The answer is apparent, my daughter."

"I want you to supersede me in every way. You will achieve things that I was not able to during my lifetime."

IT IS WHAT EVERY PARENT HOPES FOR FROM THEIR OFFSPRING.

EAGLE'S EGG - STARDATE 10.27.21
Link to previous Eagle's Egg logs

The long night has come. The greatest civilization in history has fallen. Now one ship, one crew, have vowed to drive back the night and rekindle the light of civilization. On the Eagle's Egg... Hope lives again.

The red triangle on the Bridge flashed brightly, but silently. The lights on the Bridge were dimmed.

Captain Zeno sat in quiet contemplation with his hands crossed in front of his face. He stared at the five ships on the View Screen.

Behind Captain Zeno, a short distance away but still within earshot, sat Admiral Tiberius. The Admiral thought back to his early days in command. It was a long, long time ago...back when he was still young.

Captain Zeno patched in his implanted Communications Chip to his Sensor Officer with a thought. The words he spoke were instantly transmitted for his Officer to hear.

"Moult, sensor readings on the four ships?"

The green insectoid with large, yellow, compound eyes and two antennae answered with a clicking accent. He stared at the holographic display in front of him.

"One Heavy Cruiser, two Light Cruisers, and one Destroyer, Captain. Their shields have suffered minor damage. They are...Reavers."

"They are targeting a lone Heavy Cruiser," T'Peve added through her own Communications Chip for Moult and Captain Zeno to hear. "The Heavy Cruiser has suffered major internal damage. It is one of the Universal Order. The Reavers allow the ship to restore some of its shields before attacking it over and over again. They appear to be...playing...with it."

Captain Zeno formed a look of disgust on his ebony face. His white eyes stared at the four ships like a wraith.

"Komodo? Assessment?"

The large reptilian Tactical Officer studied his display for a moment before responding. His tail swung back and forth. He clenched his sharp claws into fists.

"They are no match for us, Captain. Provided we utilize the correct tactics during the battle. We can afford no mistakes. The Reavers are armed with standard Disruptor Bolts, Drones, and Offensive Phasers. They possess no Advanced Technology. The Universal Order Heavy Cruiser is armed with Photons and Phasers, not unlike the Early Cruisers of our...Former Civilization."

"Dodo, how long will the Universal Order Heavy Cruiser last?"

The Bird-like Navigator watched his holographic console with bulging eyes. He squawked, "They are playing with their prey, but with each passing moment the Universal Order Cruiser suffers more and more internal damage. I would estimate anywhere from...five to ten minutes."

"Stubby, distance to the combat zone?"

The short Helmsman with three legs, three tentacles, two eyes, two mouths, and two ears replied, "Three hundred thousand kilometers, sir. Shall I lay in an intercept course?"

Captain Zeno did not respond. Instead, he glanced back at Admiral Tiberius.

"It's decision time, Zeno," the Admiral said without being verbally asked anything. The old man smiled. "Do you cling to the morals and values of the Civilization we came from? They dictate that you must intervene. You know how evil and deplorable the Reavers are. They prey on anything weaker than themselves. But you also have a mission to fulfill. That mission is to protect the Egg at all costs. If you become involved, you risk that mission and the Egg. I can't tell you what to do, Captain. The choice is yours and yours alone."

Everyone on the Bridge of the Eagle's Egg turned to stare at Captain Zeno while he carefully considered his options. His milky white eyes remained focused on the Universal Order Heavy Cruiser that was being battered mercilessly by four adversaries.

Finally, the Captain spoke.

"Stubby, lay in an intercept course, Maximum Warp."

"Gray, Reinforce the Forward Shield. Activate the Shield Regenerator."

"Karth, prepare to activate Electronic Counter Measures."

"T'Peve, charge the X-Phaser Capacitor to Maximum Energy."

"Dr. Purr, prepare to receive Casualties in Sickbay."

"Stenella, load a Scatterpack. Prepare two Wild Weasels."

"Major Ubra, prepare to rebel Boarding Parties. Be ready to conduct Hit and Run Raids should we get the opportunity."

"Dodo, ready the X-Drone Rack."

"Komodo, Fast Overload the 2X Photon Torpedoes. Prepare to fire on my command."

"Wildcat, be ready to lead the entire Talon Squadron out of the Hangar."

"Vorak, deactivate the X-Cloak on my command."

Alright, you Bloodthirsty Hyenas. We've seen what you can do against a lone Wounded Rhino.

LET'S SEE HOW YOU FARE AGAINST THE LION.

EAGLE'S EGG - STARDATE 10.28.21
Link to previous Eagle's Egg logs

The long night has come. The greatest civilization in history has fallen. Now one ship, one crew, have vowed to drive back the night and rekindle the light of civilization. On the Eagle's Egg... Hope lives again.

The Eagle's Egg was in the eye of the tornado. She twisted and spun about as if she was a leaf caught in ferocious winds. All around her, incoming masses of drones approached like swarms of hornets.

Captain Zeno barked out orders in a stern, monotone voice. His eyes remained glued to the View Screen and the small tactical holographic display that emanated from his Command Chair.

"T'Peve, fire starboard X-Phasers in Rapid Pulse Mode at Drones approaching from that side. Wait. Wait. Now, fire portside X-Phasers in Rapid Pulse Mode. Destroy those incoming Drones. Wait. Now, fire Forward X-Phasers in Rapid Pulse Mode. Take out the Drones in front of the Eagle's Egg. Use our 360 X-Phasers to destroy any remaining Drones coming in at odd angles."

"Moult, monitor the Full Aegis and coordinate all results with T'Peve. I want every last incoming Drone destroyed. Not one of them should be allowed to slip through. Understood?"

Captain Zeno switched his Communicator Chip to his Tactical Officer with a thought.

"Komodo, Fast Overload the 2X Photon Torpedoes for another volley. Prepare to fire on my mark."

"Dodo, launch another pair of X-Drones from our X-Drone Rack at the Reaver Heavy Cruiser attempting to flee."

"Gray, transfer Shield Strength from the Fifth Shield to the Sixth Shield. And transfer Shield Strength from the Third Shield to the Second Shield. I want our Second and Third Shields at full strength. Understood? Continue Shield Regeneration on our Sixth and Third Shields."

"Wildcat, you've devastated your target. Bring the Talons back into our Hangar Bay. I want a full status report on each X-Fighter as soon as you land."

"Stubby, bring the Eagle's Egg about. We finished the Reaver Light Cruiser. Pursuit Course after the fleeing Reaver Heavy Cruiser, Heading 320 Mark 46."

Explosions of light and fire surrounded the Eagle's Egg as she destroyed each and every incoming Drone with her Rapid Pulse X-Phasers. Then the Eagle's Egg sped after the only remaining Reaver starship. She was heavily wounded and trying to escape.

The Eagle's Egg was a sleek, crescent-shaped starship with four nacelles and a sharp beak in the front.

The battle had favored the Eagle's Egg, as planned. The Eagle's Egg Decloaked and surprised the Four Reaver starships. They scrambled to arm their weapons and attain a suitable fighting formation. But it was too late.

With her first volley of Overloaded 2X Photon Torpedoes and X-Phasers, the Eagle's Egg destroyed one of the Reaver Light Cruisers. A Scatterpack of X-Drones seriously damaged the second Reaver Light Cruiser, which was later destroyed by X-Phaser fire. Talon X-Fighters, led by Wildcat, had swooped down up the Reaver Destroyer, easily destroying it. After a brief exchange of fire, the last Reaver Heavy Cruiser realized it was no match for the Eagle's Egg. Damaged, it began to retreat.

Within moments, the Eagle's Egg caught up with her. Overloaded 2X Photon Torpedoes and X-Phasers were locked onto the wounded Reaver Heavy Cruiser.

"Snow, open a channel to the Reaver vessel."

The blind albino Communications Officer nodded, although she could not see. Instead she perceived the world psychically through her thoughts. Two white antennae curled and pointed in different directions as she completed her tasks.

"Reaver Vessel," Captain Zeno said in a calm, non-threatening voice. "We monitored your conflict with the Universal Order Heavy Cruiser. We intervened to stop your destructive behavior. Submit now and we will beam your surviving crew members into our Brig. Refuse...and be Destroyed."

An image slowly appeared on the View Screen of a battered, determined individual. Behind him, his Bridge was in shambles with debris and fires scattered all about. He was a dark man with long braided hair. His tattered uniform resembled that of a pirate or a rogue mercenary. His face was bleeding from a wound he had suffered during their engagement.

"I...don't know...who you are. But you have made a...grave mistake. Every Reaver Vessel...in this Sector...and we have Many...will now be Hunting you. Don't think you've won this day. You've merely signed your...Death Warrant...which will come...slowly and painfully. I do not fear...Death...nor does my crew. We would rather...Die...than be your Prisoners."

Captain Zeno stared into the eyes of the Reaver Captain for a moment without saying any words. Captain Zeno knew that he meant what he said.

Captain Zeno glanced back at Admiral Tiberius briefly. The Admiral had a look of death on his withered, old face.

"As you wish," Captain Zeno said in a low voice that was almost a whisper.

FIRE.

EAGLE'S EGG - STARDATE 10.29.21
Link to previous Eagle's Egg logs

The long night has come. The greatest civilization in history has fallen. Now one ship, one crew, have vowed to drive back the night and rekindle the light of civilization. On the Eagle's Egg... Hope lives again.

After a bright flash of light, the Universal Order visitors arrived on the Eagle's Egg. They wore dark grey and light grey uniforms, each of which bore the symbol of the Universal Order: a circle within a circle. The Unversal Order Captain stepped forward, flanked by two other Officers.

Captain Zeno stepped forward to meet her. Behind him stood three of his Officers.

"Captain Nadalla," Captain Zeno said as he bowed slightly. "Welcome to the Eagle's Egg. We are honored by your presence. I am pleased that you agreed to dine with us while your vessel undergoes repairs."

"The honor is completely ours," Captain Nadalla said with a smile. She was a red woman with orange spots covering her skin. "Especially considering that you are our rescuers. Is it your way to always rush to the aid of those less fortunate than yourself?"

"Not always," Captain Zeno responded. His milky white eyes met Captain Nadalla's blue eyes. There was a brief moment when both Captains peered into each other's souls and assessed what the other was made of. "But in your case, the battle hardly seemed to be...fair."

Captain Nadalla's face grew grim as she recalled the recent conflict. "That is how those devilish Reavers operate. They hunt in packs and assault lone targets. Rarely will they engage a ship in equal combat, if ever."

"Are the repairs being led by my Chief Engineer proceeding in a satisfactory manner?"

Captain Nadalla's face lit up with delight. "Oh yes. Your Chief Engineer...Stenella...is it? She is extremely knowledgeable, as is the rest of her team. Already, critical functions have been restored to the Bright Star. She is a curious creature. Forgive me for asking, but is she some kind of fish?"

Captain Zeno smiled. "Stenella is related to a species that we call a Dolphin. Her homeworld is full of water. Over time, their species evolved, even developing some telekinetic abilities. I am pleased to hear that your repairs are going well. Before we sit down to eat, let us make a few introductions, shall we?"

An excited Otter-like being wearing bright colors jumped forward. She eagerly shook Captain Nadalla's hand without being offered. Captain Nadalla chuckled.

"This is Sir Oraya," Captain Zeno explained, slightly embarrassed by his Officer's behavior. "She is our Ambassador. Please forgive her, she has to learn not to physically touch any guests without their express permission."

Sir Oraya glanced at Captain Zeno, who had a stern look on his dark face. A look of embarrassment formed on her furry face. Her whiskers sagged downward.

"I'm terribly sorry, Captain Nadalla! It is our custom to shake hands upon meeting someone new for the first time. Welcome to the Eagle's Egg!!"

Captain Zeno motioned with an open hand toward a light green woman with dark green hair standing beside him. The woman was very composed.

"This is Lady Jung, our Counselor. She is an expert on Behavior and Psychology."

Lady Jung nodded toward Captain Nadalla. Lady Jung said nothing.

Finally, Captain Zeno introduced a dark, imposing figure who resembled a Bat-like humanoid. His frightening face, which had two open nostrils in place of a nose, was intimidating. "And this is Hoary, our Chief of Security. Please take no offense to his presence. He always greets new visitors to our starship as a matter of procedure."

Captain Nadalla looked at Sir Oraya, Lady Jung, and Hoary. She smiled. Then she turned and introduced the two people behind her.

"This is Mister Ogg. He is my First Officer. And this is Carita. She is my Chief Medical Officer."

With the introductions completed, the two groups of people looked around at their surroundings.

Captain Zeno, Captain Nadalla, and everyone else stood in a large banquet hall. Before them lay a long table full of food, drink, horderves, glasses, plates, fruits, vegetables, pitchers full of liquid, silverware, and napkins. Captain Zeno waved toward the table and invited everyone to sit down.

A short, green, Gecko-like Humanoid with large eyes stepped out of the back and approached the table. He bowed before the Universal Order Officers.

"This is Kawekaw," Captain Zeno said in a pleasant tone. "He is our Chef. He and his staff will be serving us while we dine. I have already passed on the culinary dishes that you transmitted over. He has taken the time to prepare them for you."

"I hope you enjoy them," Kawekaw stated hopefully.

SHALL WE BEGIN EATING?

EAGLE'S EGG - STARDATE 10.30.21
Link to previous Eagle's Egg logs

The long night has come. The greatest civilization in history has fallen. Now one ship, one crew, have vowed to drive back the night and rekindle the light of civilization. On the Eagle's Egg... Hope lives again.

Captain Nadalla's face lit up. She slowly put another piece of purple seafood into her mouth. The Captain closed her eyes and let out a soft moan.

"This is delicious! My compliments to your Chef, Kawekaw!! Never before has this Universal Order seafood speciality tasted so good. And the fact that you are not even familiar with our cuisine simply adds to the marvelousness! Well done!!"

Standing close to the dining table, Kawekaw took a bow. The Reptilian Gecko was pleased. Having his guests love the food they eat was his highest goal.

Captain Zeno smiled. He twisted some linguine and clams onto his fork and put it into his mouth. While the Universal Order visitors enjoyed their dishes, we would enjoy ours.

Mister Ogg spoke up in-between bites. He was an odd-looking individual with extra large ears shaped like clams.

"Captain Zeno, if I may ask. While I was monitoring your battle with the Reavers, I determined that your Photon Torpedoes have a much greater yield that our own. I also noticed that you were able to arm them faster than should have been possible. Could you please elaborate?"

Captain Zeno didn't mind answering. "Our ship utilizes Advanced Technology, Mister Ogg. You will find, in time, that your base technology has many avenues for performance enhancement. With the right manufacturing, components, elements, and design philosophy, you can achieve the same as well. It won't happen overnight, but you can make it happen in your own future."

Mister Ogg nodded, both satisfied and amazed by the response. He had never considered the possibility that their own technology might advance so far. Mister Ogg politely thanked Captain Zeno before continuing his meal.

"Clearly," Captain Nadalla said as she sipped some blue wine. "The Eagle's Egg is not from our Sector. Would you mind discussing what your purpose is here? Your starship is fascinating. Never before have I seen the like."

Again, Captain Zeno wanted his guests to feel comfortable. He explained, "We're just passing through, to be honest. Although our starship may not seem like it, we're actually looking for a New Homeworld to settle. Our own civilization was...destroyed...and we are all that remains of it."

Captain Nadalla, Mister Ogg, and Carita immediately sensed that they had touched upon a nerve. They kept quiet as they continued to eat, asking nothing further for now.

Sir Oraya hated periods of long silence. The humanoid Otter's whiskers perked up. She blurted out in a loud, cheerful voice, "Captain Nadalla. Can you tell us more about the Universal Order? We love to hear about New Civilizations. What is your purpose in deep space?"

Captain Nadalla had taken a liking to Sir Oraya since she first met her. This furry little creature was amusing, funny, and upbeat. "Of course, Ambassador. The Universal Order exists to bring peace, justice, and order to the galaxy. We openly accept members from new worlds, provided that they agree to follow our code. Our code is very strict, detailing what must be performed in nearly every kind of situation. We find that the less room we leave for interpretation, the less error there is. Some members wholeheartedly embrace our code of conduct. Others reject it outright because they believe it is too restricting. They have to understand, our laws are for the good of everyone in the entire galaxy."

"Restrictions are necessary," Hoary added. The Bat-lke Security Chief was trying some of the Universal Order dishes. "People need to know their boundaries. I have dealt with this many times in security. Strict rules help to define behavior. This is essential when large groups of people interact with each other."

Lady Jung noticed that the Universal Order Chief Medical Officer was unusually quiet. Perhaps she felt uncomfortable among strangers. "Carita, how do you find the food? Is everything to your liking?"

Carita tried to smile through a mouthful of noodles. When she had swallowed her food, she replied, "Why yes...Lady Jung...correct? I'm sorry if I seem distracted. It's just that we had so many wounded and dead aboard the Bright Star. I was overwhelmed for hours and hours. But now, I can finally relax and enjoy some food. When you've been working nonstop for so long, sometimes you just want to eat and not think about anything!"

Everyone at the table let out a light chuckle. They all understood Carita's remarks about working long shifts.

Later, as the food diminished and everyone grew full, Captain Nadalla addressed Captain Zeno is a low voice.

"Captain Zeno? Might we speak somewhere...in private? I have an important matter I would like to discuss with you."

"Of course, Captain Nadalla. We can take a walk through our Arboretum. You will find the many colors of trees and plants to be quite beautiful. Come."

Captain Zeno and Captain Nadalla stood up. Before leaving, Captain Zeno addressed the group.

"Please excuse us, everyone. We will return shortly. Kawekaw and his staff will take care of any specific requests you may have. So please, while we are away..."

ENJOY YOUR DESSERT.

EAGLE'S EGG - STARDATE 10.31.21
Link to previous Eagle's Egg logs

The long night has come. The greatest civilization in history has fallen. Now one ship, one crew, have vowed to drive back the night and rekindle the light of civilization. On the Eagle's Egg... Hope lives again.

Captain Nadalla was speechless. The Arboretum was even more beautiful than Captain Zeno had implied. She walked slowly beside him, taking in every fresh scent and all the vibrant colors.

"We don't have anything like this aboard the Bright Star. I'm afraid that ours is a drab, boring starship. The Universal Order believes in functionality. They don't waste space on...pretty things."

"I understand," Captain Zeno replied. "We're fortunate that we have the room on the Eagle's Egg. And we have found that beauty can enhance and uplift lives, which is essential for a crew on a long deep space mission."

Captain Nadalla stopped to smell the Freesia. She closed her eyes as she breathed in the wonderful fragrance.

Captain Zeno stared at Captain Nadalla, wondering about her past and how she came to be a Captain. Perhaps he would never know.

"Captain Nadalla. What is it that you wanted to speak with me about?"

Captain Nadalla turned back toward Captain Zeno. She had a serious look on her crimson red face.

"I'm terribly sorry to impose on you further, Captain Zeno. You have already done enough, going so far as to save all of our lives. We would not be alive if not for your intervention. But my mission for the Universal Order is too important. I must see it to completion."

Captain Zeno was intrigued. But he wasn't sure if he could help. "Please, Captain Nadalla...continue."

"The Bright Star is carrying an artifact critical to the wellbeing of Atrin IX. The government on the planet believes the artifact has magical powers, making the land bountiful and the people prosperous. Whether it does or not, I am unsure. But I must make sure that the artifact is returned to Atrin IX as soon as possible. With the Bright Star severely damaged, our speed will be too slow. But the Eagle's Egg can transport the artifact there speedily without delay. I trust you with it, Captain Zeno. I can tell you are an honorable man. I am a good judge of character, even if we just met. Will you assist the Universal Order in this task?"

Captain Zeno was apprehensive. He knew nothing about Atrin IX, the government, or the dangers there. He was unsure of other factions that might want to take the artifact. He didn't know if the artifact itself was dangerous. He had already done enough by saving the Bright Star from destruction. And if he accepted this mission, he would once again be putting the Egg in danger. Admiral Tiberius would not approve. But there were countless lives at stake. Clearly, the people of Atrin IX need this artifact or something terrible will befall them.

"Captain Nadalla, how did you come to possess the artifact? Why is it away from Atrin IX? What exactly is it?"

Captain Nadalla could sense Captain Zeno weighing all of his options. Like any good Captain, he was assessing all the variables.

"The Crown of Kings, as it is called, was stolen from Atrin IX by the Reavers. The Bright Star was sent to retrieve it. We succeeded, but we were intercepted by the Reaver Fleet that you later destroyed."

Captain Zeno went quiet. The Reavers seemed to be the source of much disturbance in this Sector.

"I must remain aboard the Bright Star to oversee her repairs and safe return. So I request to send two operatives with you. I trust them implicitly and know that they will see the task done. What do you say, Captain Zeno?"

The Eagle's Egg should just continue on her way. This is not our affair. We have done enough, including risking the lives of everyone aboard the Eagle's Egg and the Egg itself. But there was something Admiral Tiberius said...we have to hold onto the morals and values of our past Civilization...

Captain Zeno's eyes met Captain Nadalla's eyes without blinking.

I ACCEPT.
