Uploaded a Revised Version of the Haylon Battlecruiser SSD to StarFleetBattlesTheGenesisProject.com:
Haylon Battlecruiser SSD
The Haylon was a New Empire created back in 2017 which was balanced against the Alpha Sector. The Haylon Battlecruiser employed PH-4's as its Heavy Weapons, along with a supplementary RH PL-F. To balance the hard hitting PH-4's, they were given Extremely Limited Firing Arcs so that maneuver would be necessary to bring them into arc.
The Haylon Battlecruiser was playtested a few times against Alpha Sector ships and it seemed fairly balanced. The PH-4's did not prove overpowered.
The Haylon Battlecruiser was originally part of the Orphan Ships/RAW/Primalis Galaxies, so it no longer had a proper home. Not knowing where else to put it, I placed the Haylon Battlecruiser in the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems. The Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems (which ranges from Early Years to Z-Technology) is similar to the Federation, but a Million Times Larger, with Member Galaxies instead of Member Worlds.
The original Haylon Battlecruiser did not have an R-Section at all. So I wrote up an R-Section for its posting on StarFleetBattlesTheGenesisProject.com:
HAYLON SHIPS
(AR1.1) HAYLON BATTLECRUISER (BC)
The Haylon Battlecruiser was a well armed starship with below average maneuverability. Armed with Four Phaser-4's with Limited Firing Arcs, a RH Plasma-F, and a Set of Phaser-1's with Broad Firing Arcs, the Haylon Battlecruiser was a worthy adversary for any opponent. The inexperienced Haylon Captain struggled to bring its powerful Phaser-4's to bear on the enemy, but the Seasoned Haylon Captain knew well the capabilities and firing patterns of their ship. Starships engaging the Haylon Battlecruiser were often surprised by the Haylon's plentiful shuttles, an advantage which provided the Haylon with tremendous flexibility during combat.

Uploaded a Revised Version of the Echoan Heavy Cruiser SSD to StarFleetBattlesTheGenesisProject.com:
Echoan Heavy Cruiser SSD
DESIGNER NOTES:
The Original Echoan Heavy Cruiser was created and submitted back in 2016. The Echoan Heavy Cruiser was designed using the Omega Sector Design Paradigm, although the galaxy it belonged to back into 2016 wasn't fully realized. Now, with the launching of StarFleetBattlesTheGenesisProject.com, the Echoan fit perfectly in the Graw Project. However, a minor change was needed. The Old Type of Phaser on the Echoan needed to be discarded and a New Type of Phaser Designed. This became the Vibration Phaser. Given the Echoan's Tactical Nature, their Unique Biology, and the Technology behind their Pulse Waves and Shield Amplifiers, the Vibration Phaser was a neat fit.
THE GRAW PROJECT
*** THE GRAW PROJECT IS DEDICATED TO BRUCE GRAW!! ***
THE ECHOAN REVERBERATION
BIOLOGY - LIVING SOUND
ECHOAN SHIPS
(GPR2.1) ECHOAN HEAVY CRUISER (CA):
The Echoan Heavy Cruiser was designed to go toe-to-toe with rival heavy cruisers. Featuring strong shields and an excellent turn mode, the Echoan Heavy Cruiser could choose to either snipe at long range or close with an alpha strike. In battle, the Echoan Heavy Cruiser relied primarily on seeking weapons supplemented by phaser fire.
The Pulse Waves utilized by the Echoans were rapid fire weapons that lacked crunch power. Instead, Pulse Waves were designed to launch constantly, wearing down the opponent's shield turn after turn. Pulse Waves featured two Firing Modes which allowed the Echoan Heavy Cruiser to either fight from afar or up close.
Vibration Phasers were a unique and deadly type of Phaser that were particular to the Echoans in the Graw Project. Consecutive Waves of Vibrational Force impacted their target over and over, never missing. Because of the repeated nature of the crashing vibrations, the target was slowly ripped apart into pieces.
The Shield Amplifiers installed on the Echoan Heavy Cruiser were excellent defensive tools. The additional shield protection generated by the Shield Amplifiers could be adjusted periodically, giving the Echoan Heavy Cruiser a certain flexibility in defense as well as offense. Shield Amplifiers were typically destroyed during the battle as the Echoan Heavy Cruiser suffered internal damage.

THE BARD
STARDATE 06.12.22
Link to previous The Bard entries
Slowly and steadily, two lone figures climbed the walls of the old tower. The top was within sight at last. Although their ascension had taken over an hour, neither person's muscles were fatigued or exhausted.
Clouds floated softly across a light blue sky. Birds flew through the air, chatting with one another about today's happenings. The air was crisp and cool, just the sort of weather to revitalize a person feeling lazy or dreary.
For some unknown reason, transporters were blocked on the tiny planet they found themselves on.
This was no ordinary tower the two were scaling. For it was made of wood, wood that was far older than either of them. Wrapped around the wood, entwined in seemingly random directions, vines shot out like snakes without end. Weeds of brilliant and magnificent colors dotted the green foliage as if to provide deliberate decoration.
Having finished their climb, the two figures stood erect atop the wood tower. They admired the breathtaking view. One man and one woman, they were Captain and First Officer.
Three beautiful women awaited their arrival. Shrouded in a grey mist that seemed to be alive, the women smiled at the sight of the Captain. They seemed to have no interest in the First Officer at all.
"All hail, Speare!" the first woman with blonde hair said loudly with her arms outstretched. "Hail to thee, Master of this Galaxy that thee call Home!"
"All hail, Avon!" the second woman with black hair said loudly with her arms outstretched. "Hail to thee, Master of the Galaxy that was, the one that is broken!"
"All hail, Avon Speare!!" the third woman with red hair said loudly with her arms outstretched. "Hail to thee, Master of the Galaxy that will be found, the one unlike the former two!!"
Then all three women exclaimed in unison, "ALL HAIL CAPTAIN AVON SPEARE!!! FOR HE WILL DISCOVER ALL THREE GALAXIES, MASTER THEM, AND UNITE THEM INTO THE TRIUNE SYSTEM, THE THREE GALAXIES THAT ACT AS ONE!!!"
Captain Speare stared at the three women in amazement. This was not the prophecy he was expecting. With a perplexed look on his face, he answered back,
"My fair mistresses! Thou stunneth me with thy words of kindness and portent. Mayhaps thou art mistaken? For what would be the penalty if I faileth to unite the three into one?"
The three women grew quiet and began to mutter to one another incessantly. They were clearly agitated and upset. Finally, the three women answered altogether,
"THERE IS NO CHOICE, CAPTAIN SPEARE! YOU CANNOT ESCAPE YOUR DESTINY!! FOR IF YOU DO NOT CREATE THE TRIUNE SYSTEM, THE THREE GALAXIES WILL DIE. FOR A TERRIBLE THREAT IS COMING, A HORRIBLE WICKEDNESS THIS WAY COMES THAT NONE OF THE GALAXIES WILL BE ABLE TO SURVIVE ALONE..."
Captain Speare went quiet. He would not resist his Fate. The Captain turned and looked at his Android First Officer. She stared back at her Android Captain.
Captain Speare threw up both hands as a gesture of helplessness and said to everyone present and to the Heavens themselves,
"ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, AND ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN MERELY PLAYERS!"

Grendel stared into the mirror in his Quarters. A young, handsome man with golden hair and a golden beard stared back at him. This was the Captain of the Peacekeeper Heavy Cruiser entitled Beowulf. But Grendel knew better. For just underneath the surface of that facade lay a terrible beast, a ravenous creature that devoured living things. A monster lay within him.
Grendel recalled how he was discovered as a lone child on an empty planet. The Peacekeepers immediately recognized his great intelligence, his adaptation and improvisation abilities, his tactical skills, his charisma, and his natural leadership qualities. They took him in as one of their own. But it wasn't long before they discovered the horrible thing that hid inside of him, waiting to burst out. The Peacekeepers attempted to subdue and control this beast with daily medication.
In time, Grendel grew into the capable man that the Peacekeepers predicted he would be. Many supported him, many tutored him, and many mentored him. Grendel himself was surprised at his own accomplishments. He achieved things that he never would have thought possible as a child. People believed in him so he believed in himself. But there was always that thing lurking inside of him, anxious to be released from its prison.
Grendel let out a loud sigh. He looked out of the window at the stars passing by. Like it or not, he was now responsible for Beowulf and her crew. He, and the creature within him, would not fail them.
The Intercom sounded.
"Captain Grendel? Are you there, sir?"
Grendel answered, slightly annoyed.
"Yes. And remember, it's either Grendel or Captain. Never both. Understood?"
"Yes...Captain. You are needed on the Bridge, Captain."
A serious look formed on Grendel's face. This was it. Fate had sounded its clarion call. It was time to fulfill his Duty.
"I'M ON MY WAY."

Grendel entered the Bridge of Beowulf. Tensions were high as the triangle flashing red alert flashed brightly. Grendel exchanged a quick glance with Gorga, his First Officer. Then he took the Command Chair.
"Report!" Grendel said loudly in a stern voice.
"Beowulf is being held by a 'Giant Hand', Captain!" Gorga answered. She had the most beautiful face aboard Beowulf, but her hair was composed of living snakes.
Grendel formed a confused look on his handsome, young face. He turned to his Science Officer. "A 'Giant Hand?' Brittel, what is it composed of?"
The sleek, graceful woman made of all glass responded, "Energy, Captain. Sensors indicate that although the anomaly has the shape of a human hand, it is made up of tight bands of energy that interlace with one another." Brittel continued her scans without waiting for the Captain to reply.
Grendel grew impatient. "I've had enough of this. Nymph, Maximum Warp! Shake us free in any way possible!"
"Aye Captain," the humanoid grasshopper answered. The Helmsman activated the controls for Warp Drive. A revving noise got louder and louder throughout Beowulf. The Peacekeeper Heavy Cruiser shook from the strain. But the Hand held her fast. Beowulf was stuck motionless in place.
Grendel contacted Engineering through the Intercom. "Emet! Can you give me any more? We need to break free!"
The Golem on the other end replied in a deep, monotone voice. "I'm afraid that's all she's got, Captain. You've pushed the engines to the limit. They're starting to overheat!"
Frustrated, Grendel cut off communication with Engineering and instructed Nymph to power down the Warp Drive. The revving died out and Beowulf remained exactly where she started, just like a fly caught in a web.
Grendel contacted Sickbay. "Inches, respond. I want your entire team on standby. Be ready for any kind of biological attack. We may suffer casualties at any moment."
The long, humanoid Caterpillar responded from Sickbay. "Yes, Captain. We will be ready to receive casualties and to repel biological threats. But please be careful!"
Grendel switched the Intercom to the Security Center. "Lady Dracan. Have your officers secure Beowulf. I want every critical area under guard. We don't know what we're facing here, but we have to be prepared for intruders!"
"Understood," Lady Dracan answered in a sullen voice. "I'll report to you the second we spot an invader." The Chief of Security wore her full Dragonscale Armor and Helm. She picked up her Dragonscale Shield as she exited the Security Center.
Grendel turned to his Communications Officer. She was a lovely, green, plant woman with sections of onion-like skin.
"Mandragora, broadcast on all frequ..."
Suddenly, the computer stations and electronic devices aboard the Bridge began to blink erratically. The lights dimmed. A giant, floating ball of energy slowly appeared in front of the Bridge Crew. It took the form of an elderly, male, human head with a beard.
Everyone on the Bridge of Beowulf was stunned and speechless.
"I AM THE SPACE SPIRIT!! BY WHAT RIGHT DO YOU TRAVEL THROUGH THE DEEP DEPTHS OF SPACE?!??"

THE INTERGALACTIC ASSEMBLAGE OF SYSTEMS - THE CONUNDRUM
DESIGNER NOTES ADDENDUM
STARDATE 06.17.22
Link to other Designer Notes
The Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems has been defined as a space a million times larger than the Federation with Member Galaxies instead of Member Worlds. From a Designer point of view, the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems was created as a place for the High Guard (who use Z-Technology) to oversee, protect, and interact with. It is a massive region that features ships with technology ranging from Early Years to General War to X-Technology to Z-Technology (and not just the High Guard). The Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems is simply the next incarnation of the Celestial Fellowship of Galaxies (which was the same thing on a smaller scale).
The problem arises in the vastness of technology present in the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems. if you have a galaxy with only Early Years technology, everything plays fine. If you have a galaxy with only General War technology, everything plays fine. If you have a galaxy with only X-Technology, everything plays fine. If you have a galaxy with only Z-Technology, everything plays fine. But when you mix the range of technologies together, you have a great probability of Unbalancing the Game. Unbalanced Games lead to Frustrated Players who won't be playing very long (which is why the SFU is so great, precisely because it HAS Balance - most of the time).
Remember there are different types of Balance. There is Balance between Weapons and Devices. There is Balance between Ships. There is Balance between Fleets. There is Balance within a Scenario. There is Economic Balance. There is Balance in the Technological Race. There is Balance within a Campaign. There is Balance within a Tournament. There is Balance between Rules. There is the Overall Balance to the Entire Game. The BPV System is good, but, in my opinion, not perfect. Whenever you take Complicated Factors and Reduce Them to a Single Number (Credit Score, IQ, etc.), that Single Number never tells the Complete Story.
What I Don't want is for the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems to become a Wild, Chaotic Place full of Extremely Different Ships of Crazy Potential. A place where a Heavy Weapon can generate 100 points of damage in a single direct-fire blast. A place where a Device can Warp Reality, killing Whole Fleets at a time. A place where a Low Technology ship might be armed with Phasers that cause 1 point of damage and be protected by only 1 point of Armor. A place where starships can move Speed 3200 during a turn. Clearly, this Region of Space would be Very Imbalanced (in many ways). Therefore, it would be Very Frustrating to play in.
On the other hand, if the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems is Perfectly Balanced (as much as possible, in All Things), it runs the risk of becoming like a Cookie Cutter. Everything is The Same, Everything is Homogenized, Everything is a Copy of Everything Else, Nothing is Unique, Nothing is Different, Nothing Stands Out. The More you Balance Things, the More the Game moves toward this Boring, Stale State of Affairs.
And having the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems be Perfectly Balanced also Defies Logic and Rational Thought. In a place So Large, So Vast, with So Many Empires, Galaxies, and Ships, does it really Make Sense for Everything to be Perfectly Balanced? No, it does not. Such a place MUST be Imbalanced simply due to its Definition and Sheer Size.
So what is the best way to handle the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems, a massive region of space with a wide range of technologies? I've decided that the best path is somewhere in the Middle of Variation and Balance. There should be Variation in the Design Stage, but always with an eye toward Balance. There needs to be some sort of Balance, whether it be in Heavy Weapons, Devices, Ships, or Scenarios. And there needs to be Variation and Creativity to keep ships from becoming Cookie Cutter, Duplicates of One Another with Minor Changes, Everything the Same. A healthy mix combines both Variation and Balance, not just one or the other.
Onward then, toward the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems, and to all the Galaxies and Ships it contains. But onward with this Specific Mindset in mind, so that it does not become a dumping place of strange ships, an entangled mess of technologies and weapons, a mismatch of extreme power level differences. The High Guard oversees this immense place, trying their best to maintain peace and stability, and many scenarios will involve the High Guard in particular.
Lastly, it should be noted that Z-Technology is far from the pinnacle of technology in the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems, and there exists things far worse and more powerful than a High Guard starship...

Grendel was quick to react. The lives of his crew depended on him. But before he spoke, he glanced at Brittel, telling her to scan the entity as soon as she could. Her station was blinking erratically like the rest of the Bridge.
Gorga's living snakes came to life and instinctively hissed in a defensive posture around her head.
"Greetings, Space Spirit! We mean you no harm. In fact, it is our mission to seek out new life in space. I am the Captain of this starship. We represent the Peacekeepers, a benevolent, space exploring organization."
The Space Spirit stared at Grendel without answering. What Grendel did not know is that the Space Spirit was peering within his flesh. Finally, it spoke,
"BENEVOLENT, YOU SAY? WHAT MAKES YOU SO? WHAT DEEDS HAVE THE PEACEKEEPERS PERFORMED TO PROVE THEY ARE BENEVOLENT?"
Grendel took a step toward the Space Spirit. He kept both hands open so that the Space Spirit would know that he meant it no harm.
"The Peacekeepers have provided medical aid to those planets that are suffering from affliction. We have delivered nutritional foods and supplements to planets dying of starvation and famine. The Peacekeepers have instructed those worlds less fortunate than ourselves, and shared our technology with those who were capable of responsibly using it."
Two Security Officers wearing red shirts entered the Bridge of Beowulf. They each had Phasers drawn and were ready to fire.
Grendel looked back at them and motioned for them to quickly lower their Phasers. His facial expression alone was enough for them to immediately follow his command.
The Space Spirit stared at the two Security Officers for a moment. Then it turned its gaze back to Grendel and continued its questioning.
"THE PEACEKEEPERS HAVE INDEED DONE GOOD DEEDS. BUT IF I PEER INTO YOUR COMPUTER RECORDS, WILL I NOT FIND TRACES OF BATTLE, SUFFERING, AND DEATH? IF YOU ARE SO BENEVOLENT, HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THIS?"
Grendel looked down at the ground as he mentally prepared his response. He carefully controlled his breathing and anxiety. He could feel the Thing within him growing restless.
"The Peacekeepers only act in self defense. We preserve life from those who would take it. We defend and protect. Sadly, this leads to confrontation, conflict, and unfortunately, death. But this is not our way. We only use violence as a last resort, when it is absolutely necessary."
The Space Spirit stared at Grendel once more in silence. It was most unnerving. The giant, floating head with a beard seemed to be analyzing Grendel's explanation.
"YOU REALIZE SUCH WORDS ARE HIGHLY HYPOCRITICAL, ESPECIALLY COMING FROM ONE SUCH AS YOUR SELF? I SEE A DEMON CAGED INSIDE OF YOU, GRENDEL. IT IS A FOUL THING THAT YEARNS FOR RELEASE. ARE YOU REALLY SO FOOLISH TO THINK YOU COULD IMPRISON IT FOREVER? AND WHEN YOUR DARK SIDE EMERGES FROM ITS BLACK ABYSS, DO YOU NOT MAIM, INJURE, DELIGHT IN PAIN, CAUSE SUFFERING, AND CREATE DEATH?"
The Bridge Crew looked quietly at their Captain. They each had heard of his "condition," but nobody dared to openly mention it.
Grendel looked ashamed and embarrassed. He closed his eyes for a few moments. When he was ready, he answered,
"You speak the truth, Space Spirit. But I was born with this creature inside of me. I did not desire this type of existence. It was thrust upon me. We each have our Demons to contend with. Yes, I have mine. But I am Master of the Beast within me, not the other way around! I control It, It does not control me!!"
The Space Spirit sensed that Grendel truly believed his words. But belief and reality were two different things.
The Bridge Crew gasped as their Captain and the Space Spirit disappeared in a flash of light. The last thing they heard were the taunting words of the Space Spirit.
"WE SHALL SEE, CAPTAIN. LET US TEST YOUR CONVICTION. WE SHALL SEE..."

Grendel woke to a beautiful sight. A young woman with green eyes and straight black hair was staring down at him. There was kindness in her smooth face, mixed with worry and curiosity. She was cleaning Grendel's face and body with a wet rag. The rag dipped in and out of a simple wooden bowl which she kept beside her on a stool. That was when Grendel realized he was laying in a bed made of straw with only undergarments on.
Grendel sat up quickly and immediately felt his head ring. He grasped his forehead in pain. A terrible headache pulsated in his head. The woman lightly pushed Grendel back down so that his head was resting on a pillow once more.
"You must rest," she said in a calm, soothing voice. "You are safe here. I am Tarin. I found you in the woods two days ago. You have been asleep since."
Grendel was confused. He remembered being in the Bridge on Beowulf. There was a red alert. And then...everything was foggy after that.
"Please Tarin. I must have my Communicator. I have to contact my ship. Where are my clothes? Where is my equipment?"
The worried look on Tarin's face grew more intense. She reached out and felt Grendel's forehead with her palm.
"You were wearing no clothes save your undergarments when I found you. You had no equipment. What is this ship you speak of? Do you work on a sailing barge?"
A sailing barge? Grendel glanced around at his surroundings. He was in a simple cottage made of wood. It was a small home with only two rooms. Grendel's makeshift bed was in the living room which was attached to the kitchen. There were pots, pans, plates, and ingredients arranged in the kitchen. Grendel saw no signs of advanced technology.
Not wanting to alarm Tarin any further, Grendel decided it was best to not speak of Beowulf for the time being.
"I'm sorry Tarin. I must have been dreaming while I was asleep. I am called Grendel. Please tell me, where am I?"
"You are in my home, high in the mountain range called the Turtle's Back. The closest village is half a day's walk from here. I was wondering how you ended up in the forest. Perhaps, Grendel, you were injured and hit your head?"
Grendel was about to answer when his stomach rumbled loudly. Grendel's face shifted from a look of inquiry to a look of embarrassment.
"Oh!" Tarin exclaimed. She stood up. "I'm so sorry. You must be hungry! Don't worry. I just made some vegetable soup. Let me get you some!"
Tarin walked over to the adjoining kitchen area and began to scoop some soup from one of the pots into a wooden bowl. She also poured some fresh water out of a pitcher and into a glass.
While Grendel waited patiently, he thought of explanations. Was he purposely stranded on this planet by pirates? Was he abducted by some alien entity? Was he on an away mission when he hit his head? Why was he alone? Where were his clothes and gear? Where was his Shuttle? Did he transport down from Beowulf? Are they still in orbit waiting for him? Are they searching for him?
Grendel would have to inspect the surrounding area for any clues, particularly the forest where Tarin had found him.
Tarin returned with the bowl of vegetable soup and the glass of water. She began to spoon the soup into Grendel's mouth, making sure that he consumed every drop to regain his strength.
"Thank you for taking care of me, Tarin. I am in your debt. When I am able, I would like to go back to the forest where you found me. Can you take me there?"
Tarin looked concerned. She grew quiet as she continued to feed Grendel his vegetable soup. Finally she said,
"Yes, Grendel. It isn't far from my home. Less than an hour away. But you have to be well again before we leave. I won't allow you to worsen your condition by pushing yourself too hard before you have recovered."
"That's fine, Tarin," Grendel said smiling. His blue eyes locked with her green eyes. Grendel felt an instant attraction to this lovely woman who was tending to him. "I couldn't leave now even if I wanted to," he joked.
The two chuckled together, a moment of levity shared between strangers. Grendel wondered about Tarin's past, but there would be plenty of time to learn more about her.
FIRST, GRENDEL NEEDED TO GET SOME ANSWERS ABOUT HOW HE ENDED UP HERE.

Countless times, Grendel returned to the area in the forest where Tarin had found him. He searched, over and over, for signs of a Shuttle, a battle, Phaser fire, footprints from other crew members of Beowulf, or remnants of advanced technology. There was nothing. No Phasers, no Communicators, no Tricorders. How he ended up on this low technology world was a complete mystery.
Having no other choice, Grendel made a life with Tarin. She insisted that he take the spare room next to her bedroom. Grendel did so and made the bedroom his own. He kept it sparsely decorated, although he did keep any items he found that he thought might be useful in the future. Among these were various kinds of weapons and tools.
Grendel discovered that Tarin was an orphan and an only child. Her parents were killed when she was only five. They were mauled by a Gorin, a powerful, shaggy beast resembling a bear except that it had two horns protruding from its forehead and a row of spikes going down its back. Tarin was taken in by her grandmother who lived in the nearby village Wellspring. When Tarin was but fourteen, her grandmother passed away. Preferring solitude, Tarin created a home for herself higher in the Turtle's Back, a fair distance away from Wellspring. She has lived alone ever since.
Grendel tried to make himself useful around their house. He would chop wood, make improvements to the cottage, visit Wellspring to get supplies and tools, hunt, set traps, fish, garden, and work a tiny farm they both created. Grendel wished that he had more advanced technology to work with, but he also found a certain peace and satisfaction that came from utilizing only simple tools. He came to love his simple existence with Tarin. Over the years, the two fell in love.
Many times, Grendel tried to warn Tarin of the Monster lurking within him.
"Please, Tarin, believe me," Grendel said as he worked on carving a piece of wood into a makeshift spear. "There is a...Creature within me that is very, very dangerous. I would never hurt you. But if you ever see me transform into this...Other Thing...you must run away until I change back. I cannot guarantee your safety in my other form."
Tarin giggled. She continued to cook the fish they were about to consume for supper. "Oh please, Grendel, a dangerous monster? You? Is this another one of your jokes? Or tales of outer space? You make me laugh so often, my love."
The conversations always went the same. Tarin thought Grendel was joking or making up a story to amuse her. Or perhaps she could not face the idea that there was something truly dangerous inside of Grendel. Inside of the man she loved. Yet the day would come when she would see the Monstrosity for herself.
And came that day did.

The first thing that Grendel saw were the Gorin's two long, sharp horns as it charged out of the nearby bushes. Grendel had seen one before from afar, but never this close. It was a massive beast, twice the size of an adult bear. Its menacing spikes complimented the animal's razor sharp claws and teeth. This Gorin was hungry for fresh meat. Tarin screamed as loud as she could.
Instinctively, Grendel put himself in-between the Gorin and Tarin. Tarin turned to run, but she slipped and fell. It was up to Grendel to buy her enough time to get away.
"TARIN, RUN!!!!!!"
Grendel stabbed at the Gorin with his spear. He was hoping to avoid the Gorin's claws by keeping it at bay with the spear's longer reach. The spear seemed so tiny and frail compared to the Gorin's enormous size. Grendel might as well have been using a toothpick.
The Gorin snapped the spear in two with a single bite from its powerful jaw.
Quickly, Grendel drew his short sword. He purchased it a year ago in Wellspring, thankful to have a found a weapon made of sharp steel. Grendel swung wildly, over and over, trying to sever one of the Gorin's arms. With a lucky strike, he managed to cut the Gorin's chest, drawing blood.
Angered, the Gorin charged at Grendel, knocking him to the ground. With one of his hind feet, the Gorin pinned Grendel's arm, preventing him from using his short sword. Then he bit and clawed at Grendel's face and body, seriously maiming him. Grendel cried out in agony.
The Gorin continued after Tarin. She had managed to get a safe distance away, but she remained to watch the battle from behind a tree. She screamed as the Gorin approached her. Paralyzed with fear, Tarin remembered what happened to her parents when she was a small girl.
Grendel struggled to move, but he was unable to because of his grave injuries. He had to find a way to help Tarin. Feelings of helplessness and despair washed over Grendel. He could feel his conscious mind slipping away. Something dark was emerging from the deep recesses of his soul. He desperately tried to stop it, but it was too late. The transformation had begun.
Sensing that its life was in danger from a threat greater than itself, the Gorin stopped advancing toward Tarin and turned around. The Gorin found that it now stood in the shadow of a Monstrous Entity, dwarfed by its gigantic size. Grendel resembled an awkward, lumbering version of himself, many times larger than his normal size. He was covered in black and red boils and scabs from which puss oozed out. One arm was longer than the other and both ended in newly formed claws with black nails. Streams of saliva poured down from his mouth. His enlarged eyes, once filled with love, were now filled with hate.
In one swift motion, Grendel scooped up the Gorin and held it fast in his giant hand. Grendel roared as he began to rip off the Gorin's legs and arms, one at a time. Slowly, he fed himself the detached pieces, delighting in them like exquisite morsels. As he crunched on each limb with his jagged jaw, he yelled,
"NOW WHO IS THE MASTER AND WHO IS THE SLAVE?!? NOW WHO IS THE STRONG AND WHO IS THE WEAK?!? NOW WHO IS THE PREDATOR AND WHO IS THE PREY?!? NOW WHO IS THE BOLD AND WHO IS AFRAID?!??"
Grendel bit off the Gorin's head with his mouth, ripped the Gorin's body in half, and ate all the pieces, savoring all the blood that gushed forth. It was a grisly, unnatural sight, something that never should have been allowed to exist. Grendel had become a Demon, the Antithesis of Life itself.

HEIRS TO FATE
STARDATE 10.07.22
X-SECTOR
Link to previous Heirs to Fate entries
Doctor Melia brought the last of the food plates to the table. Her once blonde hair with red streaks was now light grey with white streaks. Her beige skin now displayed wrinkles, hanging low in places that used to be skin tight. Her beautiful deep blue eyes remained, but they bore the heavy weight of experience, tragedy, and time...lifelong companions whether she wanted them or not.
"Mother, please," Ichalord said in a compassionate but worried voice. "You don't need to wait on us. We are all adults now. You should be sitting at the table resting." Ichalord was a handsome young man with blonde hair with orange streaks. He was fit and strong, physically in his prime.
"Ichalord is correct, Mom," Ichabeth stated in full agreement with Ichalord. "Please sit down already." Ichabeth was the second oldest, right behind Ichalord. She was a picture of her mother, with beige skin, deep blue eyes, and blonde hair with red streaks.
"Would the two of you please stop," Ichabelle blurted out, clearly annoyed. "It is rare enough that each of us gets to visit Mother, and even rarer that all of us can be gathered here at the same time. Now, can't we just enjoy our time together?" Ichabelle was a stunning sight, much different from her sister, Ichabeth, or her mother. Her skin was bone white like her father, her hair was jet black with blue streaks, and her eyes were deep green.
Ichadred, the youngest, sat silent and unmoving, as usual. He watched the interaction between his mother and his siblings like a tiger studying his prey. His skin was jet black, his hair white with crimson streaks, and his eyes were blood red.
Doctor Melia sat down at the head of the table. She let out a soft sigh. Melia took a moment to look at each of her children. Inwardly, she said a prayer of thankfulness that they were all present and in good health. She smiled softly.
After everyone had started eating, Ichalord felt compelled to bring up a subject that was rarely spoken about.
"Mother, why isn't Father here? Where is he? Father is gone for such long periods of time that we never see him, and when we do, he just stares at us coldly...like some kind of wraith."
Doctor Melia looked down with sadness. A moment passed before she spoke to everyone.
"I know you all miss your Father. I do as well. You have all heard this explanation many times before, but I will say it again. I wish I had more to offer you."
"Your Father's confrontation with the...Final Enemy...took a heavy toll on him. He barely survived. He was scarred, not just physically, but mentally and spiritually. It took all of his being to defeat the Final Enemy once and for all. So what...remains...of your Father is just a Shadow of the man he used to be."
"But why did Father bring you to this point in time to raise us?" Ichabeth asked out of curiosity. "Why here? There are countless other choices he could have made."
Doctor Melia smiled at her eldest daughter. "I'm not completely sure, Ichabeth. I know he wanted you to be safe. I know he wanted you to prosper, to have a bright future. And I know there was something about the technology of this X-Sector, something about what was coming in the future...each of you is going to be desperately needed. That is why you are each the Captain of a powerful, state of the art Command Cruiser."
Ichalord, Ichabeth, and Ichabelle exchanged worried glances with one another. They had heard this information before, many times since they were young, but there was still something spine tingling about it. They each felt unsettled.
"Have any of you considered that the Final Enemy may have been right?"
There were gasps at the table. Doctor Melia looked at Ichadred with concern.
"My Son, why would you say such a thing? You know that the Final Enemy was Pure Evil. Your Father sacrificed everything to defeat him. There is absolutely no way that the Final Enemy was justified in his thoughts or his actions."
"So you say," Ichadred retorted in a rebellious and sinister tone. "Perhaps he was just misunderstood. Maybe he was terribly wronged in the past and he simply wanted revenge. Who knows? All I am suggesting is that, for years ever since we were young, we have heard only this one biased perspective from Mother. Would it hurt if we did our own research into what really happened? If we discovered who and what the Final Enemy truly was? It we uncovered...the Truth?"
"Be careful, my Brother," Ichalord warned Ichadred. His light orange eyes locked with Ichadred's blood red eyes in direct confrontation. "If you play with fire, you will get burned."
Ichadred's blood red eyes bore into Ichalord's soul, like a parasite taking over a host.
"FIRE CANNOT HURT YOU IF YOU ARE ALREADY BURNING."

Thanks Garth. I appreciate it.
You are correct about that last line (for the reader). But Ichadred had a singular meaning when he spoke those words.
I hope you are doing well.

X-SECTOR - PLUS TECHNOLOGY
DESIGNER NOTES
Link to previous Designer Notes
The X-Sector featured X1/X2 Technology, but did not name it as such until much later when they encountered other galaxies. Ever since its inception in the X-Sector, Advanced Technology was called Plus Technology. This designation is not to be confused with Alpha Sector "Plus" Ships. Plus Technology in the X-Sector refers to X-Technology, not simply an improved type of Ship Class.
In designing the X-Sector, it was paramount that the final result be different from X-Technology (and even X2 Technology) in the Alpha Sector. There could be similarities (some of which were unavoidable), but the differences would be significant enough to show that the X-Sector was a completely different entity that stood on its own.
It was also critical that the Gameplay in the X-Sector be as close as possible to the Alpha Sector General War. By this I mean that I wanted to stay away from hulking starships on steroids, with massive shields, gigantic warp engines, overloaded with weaponry, flying around the map faster than Speed 31, sweeping omnipresent firing arcs, etc. The dynamics of combat in the X-Sector could be different, but still must require maneuver to bring your weapons into firing arc and to protect damaged Shields, careful energy allocation, the speed is life principle, multiple turn cycling of certain heavy weapons etc.
Long ago, I looked at Jeremy Gray's version of a Second Generation X-Ship. It had some interesting ideas, but my eye was drawn to what he called a "Type V Advanced Phaser." This type of X2 Phaser only scored one additional point of damage (than a PH-1) at very close range, but extended the mid range damage by one bracket. I thought this was very reasonable (perhaps not for the Official X2 Universe, but for other galaxies employing different forms of X-Technology). Therefore, the decision was made to import the "Type V" Phaser into the X-Sector renamed as the "Plus Phaser", which would form the core of the Phasers for all empires. There would be no PH-1 in the X-Sector.
Drones in the X-Sector would fly at their targets at Speed 64. This would be a major difference between the X-Sector and X1/X2.
Plasmas in the X-Sector would be damaged at a Phaser Rate of 3:1 instead of 2:1. They would still move at Speed 32. This would be yet another difference from X1/X2.
As I did not want to employ the PH-1 and its Rapid Pulse Technology, I needed another means for the Plus Starships of the X-Sector to deal with incoming drones, plasmas, fighters, and fast patrol ships. The solution was the widespread use of the Gatling Phaser. Every empire in the X-Sector employs the PH-G, some more so than others. It would extremely rare to see a PH-3 on an X-Sector Starship.
In order to stay close to the feel of the General War Alpha Sector, every empire in the X-Sector would still employ Plus (X) Fighters and Plus (X) Fast Patrol Ships. None of these things have been made obsolete by Advanced Technology in the X-Sector.
Advanced Technology (Plus) Heavy Weapons would take a Different Design Path than in the Alpha Sector. Instead of allowing Heavy Weapons to Fire More Frequently, Heavy Weapons in the X-Sector would generate More Damage. This fit in nicely with the idea of the Plus Phaser (Jeremy Gray's Phaser-V), which also scored slightly more damage than the PH-1. Consequently, I had to be careful with the Alpha Strike Potential of X-Sector Starships, limiting the amount of Heavy Weapons they could carry.
I discarded the idea of Heavy Weapon Fast Loading because I wanted the X-Sector to feel like General War Combat during Gameplay. The basis of this is that Disruptors take one turn to arm, Photon Torpedoes take two turns to arm, and Plasma Torpedoes take three turns to arm. Of course, there are variations and exceptions, but these are the core arming cycles.
Because I wanted Standard General War Level Shields in the X-Sector and not the Massive Shields of X1, there needed to be some factor that would "enhance" or "magnify" the X-Sector Starship's Shields to make them more effective than normal Shields. This became one or more Shield Regenerators on a Starship which would replenish a portion of the Shields at the beginning of every turn for a low energy cost. Shield Regenerators can be hit on the DAC, thereby nullifying their use.
In general, all Plus (X1/X2) Starships in the X-Sector would feature Better Turn Modes and Less Chances of Breakdown. They would still retain General War Movement Costs. This reflects the Advanced Design of each Starship in the X-Sector, which were built from the Ground Up, not Converted from Old Designs.
On a side note, Early Year Technology and General War Technology were in use only for short periods of time in the X-Sector. The development of Plus (X1/X2) Technology in the X-Sector progressed extremely quickly, much more rapidly than in the Alpha Sector.
Plus (X1/X2) Batteries hold five points of energy in the X-Sector, not three points of energy as in X1. The amount of Plus (X1/X2) Batteries on each Starship is therefore very limited.
The X-Sector developed Plus (X1/X2) Warp Engines which generate two points of warp energy for use every turn instead of just one point of warp energy. While efficient for energy production, the drawback was that the destruction of a single Plus (X1/X2) Warp Engine would result in the loss of two points of warp energy during Energy Allocation.
The X-Sector also developed two new devices as an outgrowth of Plus (X1/X2) Technology.
The Pulse Generator provides a great deal of energy every turn, much more than a Warp Engine, Impulse, or APR. A single hit on the DAC can destroy this valuable system.
The Slipstream Drive, utilized by all empires in the X-Sector, combines aspects of the Displacement Device and the Quantum Transporter. It is meant to be an expensive (in terms of energy) Tactical Device, that should be used sparingly in battle. It is also not meant to be a solution to every conflict, with limitations built in to avoid abuse.
The X-Sector will examine the Rejected Ideas in X1, possibly making use of some of them. They may be outlawed in the Alpha Sector, but the X-Sector is a completely different place. Shield Pods for Fighters comes to mind and Shotgun PPT's sound interesting. Most importantly, each idea needs to have sound tactical use and should not imbalance Gameplay in any way.
The X-Sector will feature numerous New Technology, some empire-specific, some ubiquitous.
In summary, the X-Sector explores alternate routes of X1/X2 Technology and calls them Plus Technology. Their Starships are not overgunned, overprotected, or able to hit any target at any angle, but they do generate a lot of energy, a hallmark of their Advanced Technology. The goal in the X-Sector is to retain the flavor of General War Combat, while introducing a new tactical dynamic through Plus (X1/X2) Technology. Drones fly super fast, Plasmas are extra hard to destroy, Heavy Weapons can score more damage, Batteries hold more energy, Shields Regenerate, and Gatling Phasers provide defensive fire.
The X-Sector's future is exciting and full of many different possibilities.
