Greg T, I just started a speed run to Portland from Arkansas. It will be Sunday afternoon before I’ll be available, though Monday is looking better all around.
The joys of truck driving.

Andrew, I was last in and it sounds like you had a legitimate entry. I mainly jumped in because it looked like the tree really needed one more to start and no one was out there. I'd be happy to let you take my place and wait for the next one myself. I'm in two SFB campaigns, 1 F&E and a weekly at this point so I would not be missing out on playing.
Let me know
By David Jannke (Bigslowtarget) on Friday, October 28, 2022 - 11:32 am: Edit |
Actually come to think of it you shouldn't have to let me know - it was a minor clerical error that the spot was listed as open and putting you in seems to be the fairest approach.
Steve, could you swap Andrew and my subscriptions and set me up to hop in if anyone drops out? I'll fight anyone and stick to Kzinti.

MadJack (Lyran) versus CaptainRon (ATH)
Scheduled for Sunday 10/30 at 10a eastern.

I asked Petrick about swapping people, and he said it would adversely affect the tree, delaying the tournament. Now that the ships are announced, it appears to me that changing would prove to be an unfair advantage.
All of us at ADB are sorry this happened.

Ok, no worries here. I hope to play on Sunday.

1.7 bakija (GRN) vs Moose (WAX 11g1)
We are scheduled to play Friday, 11/4. Probably 7:00 pm ET.
We have played this exact game, like, 50 times. Steve has probably won 40 of those. I notably beat him to win the Council of 5 Nations finals one year with a tricksy surprise move that he did not expect. Which, sadly, is no longer surprising.
Looking forward to the game, as Steve is always a great opponent. Also not looking forward to the game, as it is a terrible matchup for me (it's like as if a ship that can always move speed 31 while also having 10 power in reinforcement or tractors is problematic for big plasma. Or something).
By Geoffrey Clark (Spartan) on Sunday, October 30, 2022 - 09:38 am: Edit |
C'mon Peter!
The WAX cannot HET, and accelerates like a pig, and is trapped in a box with your 100 points of plasma. There are strategies that work!
Best Regards,
Fellow plasma-chucker

All of this is true. But it also is always moving speed 31, makes you go through 8 drones (and then probably a suicide shuttle as well) to get anywhere advantageous, and has upwards of 15 reinforcement (while still moving speed 31 and also shooting you back with guns that fire in all directions) most of the time if you can get a good bolt shot.
Like, when the WAX has to put energy into weapons (i.e., like a HgDb or something), it is still a tough fight, but it is manageable. When the thing is a 11g1, and flown by an opponent who is wise to all of your possible tricks? It's a rough one :-)
Looking at all the possible R1 matchups, there were 2 that were completely terrible for me (WAX 11g1 and ORI), and then one that is not awesome, but mostly a toss up (your RKR). I just got lucky.

Hello Paul,
Did you get my email? I am in Tokyo, UTC+9. If you are in US Eastern, then our possible windows for play are:
* Your 17:00 is my 06:00 (Day +1)
* my 21:00 is your 08:00
I prefer the mornings for SFB, I start work at 09:00, so we can get three hours of play in each session. Please let me know what your schedule looks like!

Played a bit today but Crash had...well...crashes. We got to impulse 3 and he kept getting dropped. I had a pre-impulse one double menu issue but it went away after synching. We stopped today because of the connection issues. I had no issue earlier in the day.
Checking for updates in the client later forced some module updates but didn't seem to change any version numbers. I wouldn't recommend checking for updates though - when I reopened the client it failed with JVM not loaded errors and is now not working. Sigh.

I don't see the tree, or a way to report results, so posting here: Cadet_Stimpy over BS in a 10-turn classic. Very fun game, thank you Bill!

MadJack Lyran over CaptainRon ATH
T1 –
Turn 1 I allocate 2 overloads & 2 standards, with 2 suicides. I have 1 in HET and have a 17/25/20 plot for 21 total moves. Ron has no disruptors, a FIFTEEN point brick on his #2, and a 15/28 plot for 21 moves.
My "plan" here is to move up the map sort of slipping towards him hoping for some sort of shot on his #1 where those phaser 1's are vulnerable. I am hoping that he will cast the web sort of early and that my relatively quick plot might encourage that. My speed plot also provides all sorts of flexibility late in the turn in the event I see a way to inflict some ouchies. Ouchies is the plan.
We start the turn and Ron at the top of the map turns dir E at speed 15 after a couple moves. It looks at first like he doesn’t want to engage so I slip away a little bit to keep the range open. I am immediately thinking the most he has is standards and maybe a brick. Mid turn he speed up to 28 and turns back to direction D. I know I am moving almost every impulse at the end of the turn if I want to, so start slipping back at him and going with the original plan. He fires the Caster impulse 22 and makes a 4 hex 12 point web. We are both about 4-5 hexes from the cast non-hard web. I have a shot at range 8 on his #1 before the web hardens but it might have been his bricked up #2. Not sure, but I didn’t shoot. More importantly, he didn’t shoot either, reinforcing for me that he probably does not have overloads and maybe not even standards. It’s looking to me like he is trying for an unreturned phaser pass and my job is to make that not so unreturned. I speed up to 31 so I will move last using a battery right as I get to the web. He swings by his web and I turn in behind him on the other side of the web facing his shield 5 but the web is between us. Ron could have shot 4 p1’s at me here and kept going but he did not. Something did not look good to him so he decided to HET (batts) back towards me impulse 29. I could have crashed the web and punched him good but that delivers a lot of shield damage at speed 31, plus he was there to shoot that shield so instead I decide to sort of slip away. I did launch two manned shuttles to give him something to think about. I announce bringing up both ESGs and they will be up imp1 of turn 2. On imp 32 he fires 7p1’s r3 at my #5 (rolls well) for 31-4 batts and a few internals (1 P3, 2 hull) and kills the 2 shuttles with his 4 p3’s. Nothing I can do here, he is behind the web.
T2. Because of the HET and TM problems Ron doesn’t have far he can go without getting pounded if I HET. I haven’t fired anything yet but did need to charge my batteries. I know he has major power problems right now. I don’t know what I expected him to do but I did not imagine speed 0. He was speed 0, put 9 in phasers, charged the caster, and armed 2 overloads and 1 std, a couple tacs, and recharged batteries.
I load 3 overloads, hold suis, recharge batteries, put 1 in trac, allocate a HET, and make 11 moves (25/14/7/4). note - I do end up using batts to maintain 14 all turn.
He is still on the other side of a 12 point web so I don’t want to hit that after I HET so I delay the engagement. I turn dir A and slow down. He does get a p1 inside for 3 internals (1p3, 1 power, 1 something else?). I eventually HET direction D and start to close on him and t1 web falls. My ESGS’s are up impulse 1 at range 0 and range 3. He starts launching shuttles. My range 3 ESG heavily damages 3 shuttles. My range 0 ESG ends up killing 2 shuttles and is left at 13 points. He does fire with the other 2 really crippled shuttles for 8 on my #3. He also starts firing the snares and makes a speed change to end up in a snare hex so he would be ESG safe for as long as it is up. At range 2 I fired a couple phaser 1’s for 11 on his #1 and figured out he doesn’t have a brick. I then move to range 1 off his #1 and him off my #2.
Ron fires 6 p1, 2 overloads, 1 std, and the web fist. I fire 3 overloads and 2 p1’s. Unfortunately he doesn’t actually roll the fist and I never saw the announcement for it so had no idea. It was clearly there but I didn’t scroll up to review what he fired. He missed with a std but still did 53, 23 internals. 6 power, 3 p1s, 1 down esg, other fluff. I rolled a lot of 5’s and 6’s and only did 28. It still was 8 internals but I thought it stunk enough that I yelled and scared my dog. The next impulse we both fired 1 p1. I rolled another 6 (dog very afraid) and he rolled another 1. I took 8 and he took 4. The next impulse I fired 2 P1 and rolled 3,6 <-(dog in hiding) for 9 internals. Plinking him to death through the #1 but still haven’t really hurt him.
He is in a snare Hex and I turn into him my #1 facing his #1. He is set to move next impulse so I use my 1 allocated point of tractor power to see if I can hang onto him and stay on his #1, I was surprised I got him for only 1. Next I launch my suicides that go through his down #1. His rear p3’s are out of arc and now its getting smokey over there. 13 power left, 1 p1, 2 p3, 1 disruptor left. It’s a mess and Ron graciously concedes the game. I was stressed out the entire time and spent the afternoon giving my dog treats.
Some after thoughts - after Ron left the game somebody told me about the fist. I added 10 internals to my ship to see what would happen if it hit and it did not get the shuttle bay. If it had we still would have a game but it didn’t. It also could have missed me entirely.
If those t1 internals (3) had gotten a single power I might not have had the tractor power.
I think my range 0 ESG would have hit Ron for 13 more internals once the snare went down.
Ron did not get a lucky ESG hit on a few internals twice. Maybe that would have made a difference
Ron could have sped up more in reverse, that might also have helped.
Fun game with a very skilled opponent, very small things made all the difference. It could have gone either way.

Jack, If I read the rules correctly you would not have taken any damage crashing a 12 point web at speed 31. You would have to roll for breakdown but you had not used your HET so safe there. That is the reason I HETTED back at you on turn 1. You could have crashed the web and shot my #5 at range 4. My hope was that you would crash the web and fire at my brick from range 2. I would have returned fire with 4 P-1s. Then I move to range 1 on Imps32 and fire 3 p-1s and 4 p-3s. You most likely return fire with your RS p-1s. If you only get 1 Disrupter hit I fire 3 OLs and the web bolt on Imps 2:1. With volleys of 18 and 30 it is very possible that I have blown off you tractors and can move away before you leave the web Imps 2:11. So the HET was not as crazy as some may think....LOL

Hey Ron- yeah looking at g10.592 it's confusing me.
The first part:
(G10.592) Each point of speed lost (after the first twelve) causes one point of damage on the ship’s forward shield (or whichever shield entered the web first). See (G10.74) in the case of Andromedan ships. The ship cannot receive more damage than the amount of movement points countered by the web, e.g., a ship moving Speed 14 into a strength 30 web will only suffer (14 – 12 =) two points of damage. <---that looks like I take 19 points of damage to me. Or maybe I could read this that I would take 12 damage points maybe? Either way, getting hit for something. Maybe the assumption here is that the web has to be OVER strength 12 AND ship going faster then 12. That must be it right? So no damage unless both things are true?
And then there is this bit:
A ship moving Speed 15 into a strength thirteen web will only suffer one point of damage. <- so I guess I could be going speed 31, hit a 15 strength web, but only take 3 points of damage? 15-12? Does that look right?
There is more--- If a ship moving Speed 12 or more strikes a web of strength twelve, the ship will take no damage. In all these cases the ship will roll for breakdown as a result of the impact (G10.591). <--- this part makes me think I would take zero damage if I strike the web.
Anyone able to clarify this?
By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Tuesday, November 01, 2022 - 04:30 pm: Edit |
Jack Taylor:
The rule is that you take damage based on the speed of your ship and the strength of the web. I order to take damage the web must be at least strength 13 and you ship must be moving at least speed 13. So yuu will lost 12 movement for no damage, and anything above tha causes damage. So if your ship is moving speed 31 and the web is strength 12 you will lost 12 movement but take no damage. If the web was strength 31 (or higer) and your ship was speed 12 yuu again take no damage. But every speed point above 12 where the web is also stronger than Strength 12 will cause damage.
