Heh, like, I don't know that that is a problem. You roll a lot of dice in SFB. And in the grand scheme, they tend to even out. Yes, sometimes you alpha strike and roll 6, 6, 6, 6, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, and sometimes you roll internals and get 1, 2; 2, 2; 2, 3; 1, 1; 2, 1. And those two things even out, where the first stack of rolls is a game ender and the second stack is largely irrelevant (well, except when that was 5 stray internals on a Hydran or Lyran...).
But overall? The internal dice roller seems to be perfectly valid, in so much as it generates numbers roughly evenly, as expected, and tends toward the average (i.e. 3.5).
I mean, yeah, in SFB, sometimes a whole game hinges on a single throw of 4 dice in a game where you roll a die 100+ times in a single sitting. And if those 4 dice veer in the unusual/outlier direction, you are doomed. But, well, that's the game with a random number generator or a handful of dice--I have been killed by a handful of dice rolling 6, 6, 6, 5 as often as I have online :-)

Hey Jack,
Appreciate your frustration with the dice. I would point out that you rolled at least two 1's in a row, since you hit my bridge! Of course, you also rolled two 6's twice to hit Aux and Emer too ...
You mention that you rolled six 6's in a row as the GBS vs my RKR ... and you won that game in the end!
Since you are a DISR guy, I think the dice gods are just tell you to close to range one or zero in order to hit on a six. This strategy worked pretty well vs Ron's ATC in game 1.
Alternatively, you need to switch to plasma, man! You can still bolt if you want, but launched plasma is the perfect counter to bad luck. I used to fly Klingons in the tournament, from time to time, but those darn sixes, uim was just not good enough.
Anyway, I'm happy that both of your alphas were at range 5, I feel like as a Rom, I can take those shots with a reasonable risk, if I'm getting something in exchange.
Anyway, just my thoughts.
Best,
Geof

Hey Geof- My last shot at you I threw 3,6,6,6 on the UIM disruptors- I miss even at range 1. If anything the dice Gods are saying never fire a disruptor and never fire a P1 outside range 5, and even think twice at range 5.
True story - I was flying against Seth in my Lyran and he is chasing with a down shield. He literally said he pointed the down shield at me despite have 4 p1's firing out the back into that shield (r6-8) because he knew I would roll 5-6's like I usually do. I actually did roll 1-4's then and we both couldn't believe it.
I am a disruptor guy (miss alot) but in the Shark I can make it work anyway. They are more like an "extra" thing. The drone racks absorb enough firepower that if I roll like I usually do I am not dead, at least the first time. The Lyran doesn't have that really. ESG's are hard to use.
I am thinking about the plasma ships but afraid every winning game is 4-5 hours. That is a ton of practice time.

I mean, not always? Games that are either against other plasma ships or, like, Tournament finals, often go that long. But a lot of the time, I find plasma games go pretty quickly. Especially if you are willing to bolt occasionally :-)

One of my wins vs. Bill was due to him only hitting with 1 overloaded Disr out of the first 8...
One of my games against Paul Scott's Andro (back when it was broken) he failed the first three displacements. Still won though - he managed to stay out of arc for the final attack well enough so that when it happened he got to accelerate to make me hit the wrong panels, and was able to escape before I could fix that.

One Axis and Allies game we tracked all the rolls after the first turn. 800 odd rolls. Was nearly dead on average (off by 1 or 2 only). But, I had 2/3rds of the good rolls and my opponent had only the remaining 1/3 of them....
One time I also did 60 odd internals to a C8. The first hull was on internal 50, and that was from the 2 track. Ridiculously unlikely. But - ridiculously unlikely happens....

That's why its called random! It may all balance out in the end but along the way some people have bad luck and some people have good luck.

Whats going on with round 2 game?
2.1 BigSlowTarget ZIN Droid GRN
are we past the deadline? I want to be a replacement.
By Daniel Bitseff (Cadet_Stimpy) on Thursday, December 01, 2022 - 06:13 pm: Edit |
Ya, from the kickoff email:
"The second round will begin on 9 Nov 22 and is to conclude on Nov 27,
allowing time for Veteran’s day and Thanksgiving and getting us back on
cycle."
I'm hoping they can get it in soon, rather than replace though....

Game 3.2 - Spartan's RKR vs Moose's WAX
Friday 17:00 US EST

We had an appointment to play a bit ago and something must have come up as he was unable to attend. I'll see if he is up for playing tonight or over the weekend

Any updates on 3.2 RKR vs WAX?
Curious onlookers want to know how it is going :-)
By Stephen McCann (Moose) on Saturday, December 03, 2022 - 12:29 pm: Edit |
We played through 4 turns yesterday. Currently the RKR shields are 28/30/24/0/24/23 and he has 4 internals, LW, RW, Hull, and a rear P-3. The WAX shields are 30/30/24/24/17/12 with no internals.
For turn 5 the RKR has 1 F torp armed, 1 S and 1 F in the final turn of arming, and 1 S on the second turn of arming. There are no drones on the board, and only 4 drones have been launched so far.
There has been a lot of running around with both ships going 28-31. On turns 2 and 3 I had to use most of my phasers on torps, including giving his real plasma S 13 p-3s to bring it down to 5 damage. I have also seen one of his pseudo torps. We start turn 5 with me facing A in the top right corner with my turn mode satisfied, and him about 20 hexes away facing F.
We will definitely continue by Friday, if not before, but the time difference and my odd work hours are making scheduling a little hard.

No luck on contacting Andy (Droid) over the weekend. Sent out another email tonight offering Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday evening and Sunday. Not sure what else I should do.

Good news, I caught up with Andy and our Sapphire battle, Kzinti v Gorn starts at 6:30 Pacific tonight.
By David Jannke (Bigslowtarget) on Tuesday, December 06, 2022 - 05:25 pm: Edit |
Correction - for those who want to watch the Kzinti v Gorn Sapphire battle, it will be Wednesday Dec 7th at 6:30 Pacific. No doubt a day which will live in infamy.
By David Jannke (Bigslowtarget) on Wednesday, December 07, 2022 - 09:14 pm: Edit |
Correction of the correction - Andy (Droid) told me this afternoon he does not want to play out the tournament and has asked Seth (Kingzilla) to play me tonight in the Gorn instead.
I have no idea if this is acceptable under the Sapphire rules or if there is something else I should be doing. If it isn't legit then I guess I will have retroactively played a JFF game I guess.
Or something. Whoever knows feel free to let me know.

Kzinti v Gorn Sapphire battle
We played 5 turns & starting turn 6.
Kzinti has 2 shuttles & 12 drones left with 1 point of shield damaged on the #4 & just ED an enveloper. Used SP turn 1.
Gorn has all shuttles and will have 2 f's and a S for turn 6. shields 1 and 6 are down 12 ish and shield 3 is down 21.
both sides have played a conservative game
By Ginger McMurray (Gingermcmurray) on Thursday, December 08, 2022 - 09:06 am: Edit |
It sounds like things are going well for the Kzin. How many pseudo torps has the Gorn used?
By Jack Taylor (Jtaylor) on Thursday, December 08, 2022 - 10:41 am: Edit |
He used them both.

Normally it would be up the the judge of the tournament to name a replacement. I think SPP was listed as judge of this but I am not sure what his status is. I guess Paul Franz will have to speak up as to whether the replacement is ok.
Its probably ok this time, Seth was already in the tournament etc, but I dont like the idea of one player asking another to replace them - it should be done with the consent of the judge.
