KINDLING

OMEGA REGENESIS

Captain Hafnyr stared at the Ramoreen Battlecruiser that sat far out of weapon range on the View Screen. He had saved his ship and crew...for now.

Following Vesper's suggestion, the Kindling sped toward the Waterfalls of Nereid, hoping the location would give them a tactical advantage over the Ramoreen's Fire Technology. The Waterfalls of Nereid were the result of hundreds of Micro Subspace Rifts that were torn open during the Subspace Ragnarok. Strange liquids, which looked similar to water, began to flow into our region of space from another dimension. Collectively, these liquids looked like Waterfalls and were extremely beautiful to gaze upon.

Vesper had been right. The Kindling barely arrived at the Waterfalls of Nereid before the Ramoreen caught up to them. As the Kindling dived into the strange, flowing liquids, the Ramoreen Battlecruiser slowed and then came to a halt, sensing the disadvantage that may come from entering the Waterfalls. To test this, the Ramoreen launched one Fire Torpedo into the Waterfalls of Nereid, targeted at the Kindling. As soon as the Fire Torpedo entered the "water-filled domain", it was extinguished. Afterward, the Ramoreen Battlecruiser decided to wait patiently outside of the Waterfalls of Nereid for her prey to reemerge. She has been sitting there waiting for thirty six hours now.

Captain Hafnyr looked around the Bridge at his crew. He stared at Zep, the floating balloon creature that served at his Science Officer, Gwen, his sullen black-haired Communications Officer who could transform into something dangerous based on her mood, Pandora, his stunningly beautiful Navigator who looked human but was not organic, and Oto, his small hummingbird Helmsman who flitted in place with his ultra-fast, transparent, butterfly wings. To Captain Hafnyr's left stood Bour, his anxious, over-impulsive, young tree man who served as his Chief of Security, and to his right stood Sir Tristan, the honorable, righteous, chivalrous Otter Knight who represented the Kindling as its Ambassador. Each of them was stressed and overworked due to their current situation, lacking the breaks and relief they would normally receive. At that moment, Captain Hafnyr was so very proud of all of them. If all these different beings from every part of this Sector could work together toward their collective survival, then perhaps there was hope for all the empires in this Sector to work together once all the Subspace Chasms were repaired.

Suddenly, the Ramoreen Battlecruiser turned around and began moving away from the Kindling. They appeared to have abandoned the chase. But why now?

"Pandora, report," Captain Hafnyr said to his Navigator in a calm, cool voice.

His beautiful, inhuman Navigator quickly examined her console with her light purple eyes. Her delicate fingers ran softly and swiftly over the controls.

"A Ruppeli Light Cruiser, Captain. Bearing 43, Mark 89. She has just entered our region of space. The Ramoreen Battlecruiser is on an intercept course."

Captain Hafnyr gritted his plant like teeth. The Ruppeli were vulture beings who scavenged anything they could find. They disdained violence and avoided conflict. Their vessels would be lightly armed, if at all. They would be easy prey for the Ramoreen Battlecruiser.

Unless the Kindling intervened. But to do so would put the crew and their mission at great risk.

"OTO, BRING US OUT OF THE WATERFALLS OF NEREID. MAXIMUM WARP. ENGAGE THE RAMOREEN BATTLECRUISER."

The sleek, metallic, crab-like starship which was the Kindling spun around and around like a corkscrew. Beams of fire flew past her like blazing spears thrown through the darkness of space. The Kindling faded in and out of existence, at times looking transparent and at other times looking completely solid.

"Keep the Iso-Chrono Manipulator fluctuating between Level 1 and Level 2 based on our distance to the Ramoreen Battlecruiser," Captain Hafnyr commanded. "Do not switch to Level 0 under any circumstances!"

"Two Fire Torpedoes homing in on us from aft! Distance sixty thousand kilometers and closing!" Husk announced, staring at his tactical console with his multiple eyes. His station had to be elevated higher due to his large height.

Captain Hafnyr formed a stern expression on his plant like face. He was only half the size of Husk. But size wasn't everything.

In the opening moments of the battle, the Kindling had to slow down in order to launch a Wild Weasel, saving them from a massive concentration of Fire Torpedoes. However, this shifted the initiative to the Ramoreen, who took advantage of the opportunity by hammering three of the Kindling's Shields as it circled around. Fortunately, the Kindling's Hardened Shields absorbed the punishment and its Shield Generator immediately began to slowly rebuild the damaged areas. The Kindling's Enhanced Movement allowed it to accelerate quickly and get back into the fight. Lucky hits with two Reality Disruption Waves leaked lethal energy through the Ramoreen's Shields, destroying two of their Fire Torpedoes and one Fire Phaser. Still, the Ramoreen Battlecruiser was a deadly opponent not to be underestimated, even while wounded.

"Oto, continue evasive maneuvers, but prepare to perform a High Energy Turn on my mark," Captain Hafnyr said to his flittering Helmsman.

Vesper, who was standing right beside Captain Hafnyr, gave him a concerned look but said nothing. The albino, female, bat creature stood nearly as tall as Husk, but was much more frail.

"Zep, analysis on the incoming Fire Torpedoes. Are they Pseudo Fire Torpedoes?"

The floating balloon entity looked through a peculiar binocular-like device attached to his console. He replied to the Captain in a hollow voice. "Laboratories analyzing, Captain. Results inconclusive at the moment. They need more time."

We don't have that time, Captain Hafnyr thought. He touched a button allowing him to speak to Engineering.

"Grimm, I'm going to need all the Reserve Power you can muster. Did you prepare the 'special package' as I instructed?"

A deep voice replied. In Engineering, Grimm was handling multiple tasks at once, changing his body back and forth from rubber to plastic to concrete to teflon to silk to wool. "Affirmative, Captain. But I cannot guarantee the results. I previously informed you of the possibilities."

"That you did, Grimm. Just hold the Kindling together. Bridge out."

Captain Hafnyr stared at the View Screen for a moment before issuing further commands in a confident voice.

"Divert all remaining Reserve Power to the Forward Shield. Pandora, execute High Energy Turn. Bring us about one hundred eighty degrees."

The Navigator glanced back at the Captain with a confused look on her smooth, young face. Her pink hair flowed down past her shoulders. "But Captain, that will put us on a head on collision course with the two approaching Fire Torpedoes!"

YES, MY LOVELY, INHUMAN NAVIGATOR, CAPTAIN HAFNYR THOUGHT AS A SMILE FORMED ON HIS FACE. IT MOST CERTAINLY WILL...

U.S.S. EXODUS
STARDATE 11.06.21
SECTOR ZERO

Captain Moshe entered the neutral Meeting Chamber alongside Admiral Ramesse and Captain Jochebed. Together, the trio represented the United League of Worlds. All the major empires of Sector Zero were present, many of whom have fought war after war with one another. They have been gathered together in this peaceful, non-violent location by a mysterious, old figure called the Engineer. Sector Zero was Dying. This Joint Commission was the only chance to save Sector Zero's culture, technology, biology, and history.

After a brief round of introductions and greetings, the Joint Commission got right down to business.

"As we all know, the closest habitable systems are hundreds of years away from Sector Zero," the Engineer stated in a weary, old voice. "It has already been decided upon in previous meetings that all empires present will pool their remaining resources to construct a Massive Fleet capable of completing this long journey."

Admiral Ramesse stated, "The United League of Worlds was the pioneer in Tractor Repulsor technology. We developed the first Prototypes that each of you has incorporated into your respective empires. Now, for the purposes of this survival mission, we offer a more Advanced Version of the Prototype Tractor Repulsor Beam. This new version is capable of generating destructive force far greater than our Phasers. However, they do require more energy."

The Daemon who was currently possessing a human host spoke next. His eyes glowed red. "The Daemons have been working with the Robot Expansion. We will supply a host of Spirit Daemons who will possess and inhabit the bodies of mass produced Synthetic Clones."

Robot X4J29375TN13110PZ194W concurred with the Daemon Representative. "Yes. The Robot Expansion has been working on the mass production of Synthetic Clones. These Synthetic Clones can be grown on board our Survival Fleet as they make the long journey. The Daemons are free to possess the majority of these Clones, but some of them will possess Robot Intelligence that has been downloaded into their Brains. Additionally, in order to further bolster the crews of our Survival Fleet, we will mass manufacture robots to fill every role aboard our vessels."

A human-sized Sentient Plant with various yellow flowers added, "The Spore Synthesis is willing to contribute our unique Displacement Technology to our Survival Fleet. It may be challenging to Displace such large starships, but our Engineers are confident they can successfully accomplish this before Sector Zero completely collapses."

A short humanoid wearing a full body suit, gauntlets, helmet, and a visor stepped forward. "The Space Builders have been a part of Sector Zero from its inception. We are the ones who built our Vast Transit Network that crisscrosses all over Sector Zero, allowing ultra fast travel from one location to another. We will encode that building information and planning into the master database on the Survival Fleet. That way, when they finally arrive at their target system to settle, they will be able to quickly construct their own Transit Network to aid them in their endeavors."

A strange Mother-like figure continued the conversation in a soft voice. She was two to three times the size of a normal human and looked pregnant. "The Genetic Matriarchy is well known for our Satellites and Motherships. We will work with the Fleet Constructors so that the Fleet Starships also have this design. That way, each Satellite will be well protected within the Mothership until she decides to deploy them. Additionally, the Fleet's true numbers will be constantly hidden as the Motherships will always be carrying an unseen quantity of Satellite Ships within them."

An Artificial Brain with many glowing lights projected a strange voice for all to hear. "It is possible during this long, long voyage, that all organic life forms aboard the Survival Fleet may perish. If that happens, we cannot allow our vital mission to end. We cannot allow our very existence and all memories of us, to fade away into oblivion. Therefore, it is imperative that we, the Artificial Intelligence Consciousness, create an Evolving Master Artificial Intelligence that can assume command of all Motherships in the event of an unforeseen emergency. That Continually Evolving A.I. will be able to preserve the Survival Fleet and continue the mission, even if all organic life forms have unexpectedly died."

An imposing four-armed warrior carrying many weapons stared at the Artificial Brain for a moment. Then he spoke in a loud, arrogant voice. "The War Mongers have ever been the best tacticians and strategists in Sector Zero. It is more than likely that our Survival Fleet will encounter hostile empires on its lengthy journey to find a new home. It is imperative that our Fleet be able to defend itself, and, if it is tactically sound, to attack and conquer enemy targets. This includes the ability of some of the proposed...Satellite Ships...to conduct reconnaissance, scouting, and assessment missions. Vulnerable targets in enemy territory can then be identified and marked for future assaults. Disruptions of logistics and supply chains is also critical to gaining the upper hand. We will work with the Artificial Intelligence Consciousness to program the sum of our war knowledge into its database, so that it can draw from that experience as necessary for combat situations."

A solid red ghostly figure floated high above the floor for everyone to see. It spoke in an eerie, unearthly voice. "The Phantom Presence has been experimenting with a powerful new technology. This new technology draws all the available energy from the Engines, Batteries, Impulse, and Reactors, and channels it into a single burst of extreme power. While deadly, this new weapon is very limited in range and targeting. We will also work with the Artificial Intelligence Consciousness and the Space Builders so that future Satellite Ships which are built while en route are able to field this powerful, new weapon."

Captain Moshe became very concerned with the new direction the conversation was taking. He leaned close to Admiral Ramesse and whispered, "Admiral, may I have permission to speak?"

Admiral Ramesse looked at Captain Moshe with great interest. "Of course. That is why I asked you to accompany me. Please...speak your thoughts."

Captain Moshe stepped forward to address the entire Joint Commission. Everyone present grew quiet as they waited to hear what he had to say.

"I want to be clear. This Massive Fleet we are building...this Survival Fleet, as you call it...is of a Peaceful Nature, correct? It is not our intention to create any kind of...Invasion Force, correct? We want to find a New Home to Settle, not find a New Galaxy to Conquer. Many of our empires have not seen eye to eye, resulting in endless wars. But, as all of you well know, it is not the way of the United League of Worlds to claim new territory by force. It is not our way to attack those weaker than ourselves. We should not be scouting out enemy territory in the shadows and then stabbing them in the back with a surprise attack."

Captain Moshe glared at the four armed War Monger Representative. The Representative simply grinned.

"In short, how can we be sure, over the course of this extremely long and arduous journey, that our Survival Fleet, which will possess extremely advanced and evolving Artificial Intelligence, will not become a merciless, aggressive, conquering force? We are not building warships. We are trying to save our culture, our history, and the essence of who we are in Sector Zero. What if our Survival Fleet...at the completion of their extended journey...obliterates innocent and peaceful inhabitants in our new Home System? We must ensure that this Never occurs!!"

The War Mongers glanced at the Daemon Representative and the Phantom Presence Representative. They all had wicked looks on their faces.

"You must have faith in our Joint Commission, Captain Moshe," the War Monger Representative said sarcastically while waving his four open hands about in front of him. "Is not our very presence here, which has never taken place before between our warring empires, a testament to our peaceful nature? Does not that alone demonstrate our good intentions? All I am suggesting is that our Survival Fleet be able to defend itself, if necessary. We don't want our entire civilization to be destroyed en route simply because we didn't equip our Fleet with any weapons, do we? Let us trust in the judgement of the Evolving Artificial Intelligence that we will install. It will be able to determine right from wrong. Of course, it will not attack a helpless star system full of innocent beings. After all, the last thing we want to create is..."

AN INVADING FLEET CAPABLE OF DISRUPTING AND SYSTEMATICALLY ELIMINATING EVERY EMPIRE IN A WHOLE NEW GALAXY.

The Space Force and its surrounding empires will be deleted. Indomitus needs to grow and be touching every major empire. The Commonwealth also needs to be expanded so it is bordering many empires. There are a few major empires and many minor empires (one to three hexes) that need to be added. Some of the colors need to be adjusted so they do not blend the borders together.

PRIME SECTOR

Captain Elizabeth waited for the Turbolift to reach the Bridge. She felt tense, anticipating what was to come. Elizabeth pushed her long blonde hair back behind her shoulders and adjusted her white uniform. The Door to the Bridge opened.

Delphi and Dr. Sap were waiting for her by her seat. Lovecraft was already in his seat, which was right next to the Captain’s Chair. Quickly, Captain Elizabeth took her Chair.

“Report.”

“It’s the Stumgeschutz, Elizabeth,” Una reported. The majestic Fair Folk Science Officer stood calm and relaxed. Her long white hair seemed to drift in an unseen breeze. “She’s on an attack course for Outpost Colchester.”

“Again?” Captain Elizabeth answered, visibly annoyed. “How many times do we have to play this cat and mouse game with them?”

“Recommend that we prep a Scatterpack,” Morgause stated from her station behind the Captain and off to the right. Morgause, the Tactical Officer, was a Guardian Knight. She wore ceremonial white armor full of symbols, carried a sword at her hip, and a shield on her back. “We should also reinforce the forward shield, Elizabeth.”

“Do it,” Captain Elizabeth answered without hesitation. She trusted her Tactical Officer’s advice without question. “Go to Red Alert. Arm the Photon Torpedoes. Charge Phasers. Load the Short Range Cannons. Prepare an Ultra Warp Missile for Launch.”

A Red Triangle began to flash brightly on the Bridge of the Merlin. Powerful fields of energy surrounded the Merlin as she raised her Shields. Crewmen ran throughout the hallways to prepare for the upcoming battle.

“Elizabeth,” Delphi said as she placed her hand lightly on the Captain’s arm. Her milky white eyes stared straight ahead, for the Seer was completely blind. Or was she? “I foresee the Stumgeschutz is going to launch a Scatterpack of their own. That will be the crucial moment of the battle. Beware, for their Drones can devastate the Merlin. We have to be prepared. And there’s something else…hidden…but I cannot see it…the future is cloudy…”

Captain Elizabeth looked at her Counselor. Her precognitive insight was invaluable. Elizabeth had learned by now to carefully consider every word that Delphi utters. Elizabeth activated the Intercom to Engineering with a push of a button.

“Daedalus, I’’m going to need full Reserve Power. How are the Warp Engines?”

“Humming like a dream,” the old Clockwork Tinker answered. He smoked the mechanical cigar that was always in his mouth. Smoke puffed out of the smoke stack that came out of his back. “But don’t push them too hard, Elizabeth. We don’t want to breakdown. Reserve Power is all ready to go.”

“Prepare a Wild Weasel, Daedalus. I want to be ready for a swarm of Drones.”

Captain Elizabeth closed the Intercom and stared at the View Screen with her deep blue eyes. The Stumgeschutz was tiny due to the distance. But she was getting bigger with every passing second. Captain Elizabeth glanced at her Communications Officer.

Brimstone was a stunningly beautiful Butterfly Woman with large green wings that resembled leaves. Her sleek slender body was light green. A large mechanical earpiece stuck out of one of her ears.

“Brim, any response to hails?”

Brimstone shook her head. “I’m sorry, Captain. Nothing. I’ll keep trying.”

Captain Elizabeth glared at the Stumgeschutz with determination. What’s your game this time? Are we going to fire a few shots before you turn away, as usual? Delphi seems to foretell something different happening this time around. But what…?

“How far away is the Lionheart?”

“Three days at maximum warp,” Lovecraft answered softly from his seat beside the Captain. The humanoid Vampire Squid had crimson skin like blood. Blue Orbs blinked on both sides of his long oval head. “Too late to aid us, Elizabeth. We are alone in this fight.”

“Captain, the Stumgeschutz has altered its course,” Ignis stated in a strange voice that echoed. The Will O Wisp was a floating ball of light that disappeared and reappeared from time to time. Ignis was the Navigator on board the Merlin. “She’s headed straight for us now!”

Captain Elizabeth watched the Death Cult Battlecruiser get larger and larger on the View Screen. Her heart began to beat faster.

It’s us or them. One on one. This is why I joined the Alliance of Lords. To protect the innocent. To save lives. To fend off evil. Thousands of people at Outpost Colchester will suffer if I fail.

“Fine. You want a Fight?”

“YOU’VE GOT ONE.”

PRE-HISTORY YEARS

Captain Adeena Dounia prostrated herself on the floor of her Quarters. She knelt on a finely decorated rug full of ancient symbols. On a wall, a bare altar held only a single burning incense candle.

After saying her Prayers, Captain Dounia stood up and stared out of her window at the stars outside. She pulled her red and yellow scarf around her head so that only her face was showing. Her Uniform was also red and yellow.

The Columbiad will be the First Starship to ever leave Terra Reserve. The World is depending on us. My Crew is depending on me. There is so much at stake. So many possibilities. So many opportunities. So much to be gained. And so much to be lost.

I only pray that I will bring Honor to my Family. That I will bring Honor to Terra Reserve. That I will bring Honor to my Crew. And that I will bring Honor to the Most High. Please grant me the Strength, Wisdom, Patience, and Compassion to make these things a Reality. Alone, I am Weak. But with You, Anything is Possible.

Captain Dounia let out a soft whistle. A huge, spotted Great Dane came and sat next to her. Its sharp, pointed ears were sticking straight up. She reached out and pet its head, which was as tall as her chest.

She sat in silence with her dog beside her for a long period of time. The two were bonded together, inseparable unless by choice.

Then, as Captain Dounia prepared to leave her Quarters for the Bridge, she gave Thanks for all she had in this Life. Afterward, she closed her eyes and said,

“PRAISE BE TO ALLAH.”

DIABOLOS
STARDATE 02.13.24
HIGH GUARD/INTERGALACTIC ASSEMBLAGE OF SYSTEMS

Lady Shiva stood in her Ready Room carefully analyzing a holographic recreation of a recent tactical engagement. Her six blue arms pointed to various starships and then traced their routes throughout the battle. At times, Lady Shiva would pause the recording to take a moment to consider all the tactical implications of that particular moment. This was an important exercise for her. She had lost too many crew members in the last engagement and she was determined to discover ways that those lives could have been saved.

A devilish figure appeared before Lady Shiva. Its red form was that of a classic devil, complete with two horns and a pointed triangular tail. This was the Ship's Avatar aboard the Diabolos.

Lady Shiva pretended to not see the Devil, instead staring continuously at her tactical projection. "Didn't I leave instructions that I was not to be disturbed?" she said harshly.

"My apologies, Captain..." Lady Shiva glared menacingly at the Devil. "...ah...Lady Shiva. But I have received a distress call from a Drom Cruiser in the Tepe System."

Instantly, Lady Shiva made mental calculations to determine if there were any other High Guard starships closer to the Tepe System than the Diabolos. The Aquarius was three days away and the Quilt was a week away.

"What have those haulers gotten themselves into this time? Aren't they supposed to be transporting resources from the Sierra System?"

"That is indeed where they were..." the Devil said sarcastically. "However, it appears they soon discovered an Ancient Anomaly in the nearby Tepe System. Their distress call was brief, but I was able to discern that they had opened a piece of Ancient Machinery in hopes of finding lost technology or knowledge. The Drom Cruiser inadvertently activated the Ancient Machine causing the ongoing creation of what they describe as 'miniature shuttles with built-in weaponry and defenses.' The Drom fought them off with their limited weaponry, but are now in danger of being overwhelmed. They cannot turn the Ancient Machine off."

Lady Shiva cursed loudly. She deactivated her tactical projection. When were the Drom going to learn? This isn't the first time something like this has happened. The Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems needs to impose stricter penalties on the Drom for these kinds of incidents. But that ventured into the realm of politics, an arena that Lady Shiva was smart enough to stay well away from. Lady Shiva considered for a millisecond letting the Ancient Machine run amok in order to make the Drom look even more guilty, but there were populated worlds in the Tepe System. The High Guard was sworn to safeguard every one of those lives.

"Set a course for the Tepe System. Maximum Skip Warp. Charge the Central Capacitor to full. Raise our Seventh Shield. Ready the Defense Field. Prepare for Viral Warfare. If there's a way to infiltrate these 'miniature shuttles' and take over their controls without direct combat, that is preferrable. Bring the Quantum Transporters online. Have six squads of Powered Armor suited up and ready to jump into space on my order. Prepare to lay our Warp Field Distortion Mines, we may need to drop the Ancient Machine into a singularity. Arm the Quantum Torpedoes. I want long range scans completed to determine the exact locations of all the 'miniature shuttles' and the Ancient Machine long before the Diabolos even enters the battlefield. We'll determine our approach based on the tactical positions of the Ancient Machine, the 'miniature shuttles', and the Drom Cruiser."

"It will be done...my Lady," Devil replied slyly before bowing and disappearing in a flash of light.

Lady Shiva's facial expression became as hard as stone.

AND SO ONCE AGAIN, THE HIGH GUARD CHARGE INTO BATTLE TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT AND THOSE TOO WEAK TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.

THE CHITIN COLONIES
DESIGNER NOTES

Link to the Chitin Colonies

On my first website, I introduced the Magnesia Galaxy. This was a New Galaxy whose empires were all based on Insects. That name never sat well with me, partially because it did not immediately inform the reader what the galaxy was about. Now, the Magnesia Galaxy returns, this time renamed as the Chitin Colonies.

The Chitin Colonies uses Magnetic Weaponry, which takes various forms, but none so pervasive than as "Phasers." These "Magnetic Phasers" are rapid fire weapons, firing over a series of impulses. Although their damage output is very low, they gain the advantage of scoring Mizia damage. This whole "rapid fire, multi-impulse, very low damage" concept would also be incorporated into other types of Magnetic Weaponry.

Another design concept built into the Chitin Colonies is the idea of Magnetic Maneuvers for each empire. These are specialized maneuvers that allow ships of that empire to move in unique ways. The Magnesia Galaxy originally established these Magnetic Maneuvers, but playtesting showed they were too numerous and too complicated, easily throwing off game balance during battles. This will be corrected in the Chitin Colonies.

Magnesia starships were supposed to be small and fragile, mimicking the biology of actual insects. Sadly, the original Magnesia SSD's turned out to be the opposite, ending up so large that the page was crammed full of information and tables. I believe this happened because I was trying to exactly mirror the number of systems and internals of Alpha Sector starships. This will no longer be the case in the Chitin Colonies because their "Heavy Cruiser" will be smaller and more fragile to begin within, nothing approaching the size of an Alpha Sector Heavy Cruiser.

The starships of the Chitin Colonies are meant to be fast, maneuverable, and fragile, with multi attacks that score little damage, just like actual insects. However, the use of Tactics in order to achieve victory must still be imperative. Given the Design Paradigm of the Chitin Colonies, it is clear that they should not be flown against other Genesis Galaxies (or Alpha or Omega), but rather only playtested against other empires who also reside within the Chitin Colonies.

THE OLD GUARD
STARDATE 02.08.22
SECTOR 50

Captain Severick sat in his anti-gravity wheelchair, dreaming of better days. He was a balding, elderly man whose legs had finally given out due to a degenerative disease that he had fought off for years with medication. Now, that medication was no longer effective. The years had finally caught up to Captain Severick. And like any hunter that has finally caught up to its elusive prey, the years were vicious indeed.

But Europa Command refused to allow Captain Severick to retire on a comfortable homeworld. With his countless years of combat experience and knowledge, he was invaluable, even without the use of his legs. Captain Severick was there at all the major battles: the March of the Delta Stars, the Death of the Morning Sun, the Clash of Fifteen Fleets, the Battle of Emperor Ramses, the War of Midnight Dawn, and More. No matter what was happening with Captain Severick's body, it was Captain Severick's mind that Europa Command was interested in, and that they refused to let go of.

But Captain Severick was not the man he used to be. The truth was, his spirit was broken. He remembered his youth, when he was able to do so many things, so effortlessly, so efficiently, so perfectly. He recalled a different time...with different people, with different technology, with different procedures, with different worlds, and with a different fleet. Europa was still young back then, an empire only beginning to explore the stars. Now, Captain Severick barely recognized all the ships around him and all the Captains that commanded them. His time was past. And, although it pained him to accept it, Captain Severick knew it was true.

The harsh bitter truth was that Captain Severick wished he died heroically in one of the battles of old, fighting for a noble cause that was worthy of his life. He desperately did not want to become a burden to anyone, to lack the capability to stay independent and functional, to become a liability to Europa Command instead of an asset. He needed to have meaning, value, and purpose in his life. But how could he possibly do that when he could not even walk? The answer evaded him like an ethereal ghost which haunted his mind with every passing moment.

And now there was this young crew aboard the Old Guard. These brave, new souls who yearned for adventure and the discoveries that deep space held. They yearned for guidance, for tutelage, for mentoring, and it was to Captain Severick that they looked to as the source of these things. He could not fail them. He would not fail them. No, no matter what it took, Captain Severick would impart everything he had learned upon them, making sure they would grow into the best persons they could be once he was gone. Captain Severick would lead them into the dark, mysterious beyond so that they could find their destiny. And if that shadowy realm would claim Captain Severick's soul in the process, so be it. He could finally rest in peace...

"Captain! Two Babylon P3A Battlecruisers on an Attack Run!"

It was Descry Brookside, Captain Severick's First Officer. She would be the one to take command should anything happen to Captain Severick.

Captain Severick dismissed his thoughts and focused on the moment. He turned toward his Navigator.

"Mr. Catharnaigh, distance to the Battlecruisers?"

The young Irish Navigator examined his console. "Five hundred forty thousand kilometers ah'n closing fast, Captain!"

Hmmmm. Two Babylon Battlecruisers against one old Europa Heavy Cruiser? I've been in worse situations...

"Red Alert! Raise Shields. Charge Phaser Capacitor to maximum."

AND ARM THE PHOTON TORPEDOES.

KINDLING
STARDATE 08.19.24
OMEGA REGENESIS

Link to previous Kindling entries

Flames engulfed the Kindling, threatening to end her existence, as she plowed through two incoming Fire Torpedoes. Every member of the Bridge Crew held onto their station tightly to brace for the impact. But to their astonishment, there was no impact. The fire which burnt so brightly on the View Screen was only an illusion, and now that the truth was revealed, it began to fade away like a parting fog. The Bridge Crew cheered, but Captain Hafnyr couldn't bring himself to smile. He knew what lay ahead.

The cheering quickly ceased as a Wall of Fire began to form directly in front of the Kindling. The Ramoreen Battlecruiser knew that the Kindling was closing fast and that its Pseudo Fire Torpedoes had failed to deter her. Now out of options, the Ramoreen had but one card left to play, and Captain Hafnyr was well aware of it. Generate a Wall of Fire between the Ramoreen Battlecruiser and the approaching Kindling, and force her to go through it. Captain Hafnyr had already accepted that he had to go through the Wall of Fire to reach his objective.

At the very moment the Kindling smashed into the newly formed Wall of Fire, the Ramoreen Battlecruiser fired what remaining Fire Phasers it had left. The intent was to collapse the Kindling's Forward Shield, causing Internals before she could reach the Ramoreen Battlecruiser. The tactic worked. The Kindling's Forward Shield, which had already suffered damage earlier in the battle, crumpled like paper. Even the additional Reserve Power ordered by Captain Hafnyr to reinforce the Forward Shield was not enough to sustain it.

The lights on the Kindling flickered on and off. Screams filled the hallways. Its very Hull shook from the assault. Captain Hafnyr could feel his ship's intense pain and he suffered right along with her. But he knew this sacrifice was necessary. A Knight for a Queen.

Finally, the Kindling found herself directly in front of the Ramoreen Battlecruiser. The Ramoreen was in the process of turning, a vain attempt to escape, and by doing so exposed one of her Weaker Shields to the Kindling. Reality Disruption Waves combined with Wide Phasers tore through the Weak Shield, scoring minor Internal Damage. But the final gambit was yet to be played.

"Pandora, attach a Tractor Beam!" Captain Hafnyr instructed his Navigator in a loud voice. The eyes on the four foot plant being were bulging large. "Give it all the power we've got left!"

"Husk, launch our 'Special Package!!'" said Captain Hafnyr in a booming voice without looking at his Tactical Officer. His enlarged eyes were glued to Ramoreen Battlecruiser on the View Screen.

A light green beam of light held the Ramoreen Battlecruiser in place, even as she struggled to get away. Her Shield facing the Kindling was down, leaving her extremely vulnerable. A small, unassuming Shuttle snuck out of the Kindling's Shuttle Bay and began making its way toward the Ramoreen Battlecruiser. With no remaining weapons available on that side of the ship, the Ramoreen could not shoot down the Shuttle before it hit the mark. In this case, that mark was the Ramoreen Battlecruiser's Warp Engines. As the Shuttle impacted, a Subspace Bomb went off. For a moment, it seemed as if all sound was extinguished from the combat zone. Then the Ramoreen's lights went out and the warship who was so menacing floated in space like a dead hulking monstrosity.

For a second time, the Bridge Crew aboard the Kindling cheered. Although Captain Hafnyr allowed himself to let out a sigh of relief, he still would not allow a smile to form on his face.

"Vesper, I want a thorough Damage Report immediately. I need to know how badly the Kindling has been hurt. Zep, begin Damage Control Procedures. Send a team right away to the Subspace Regenerator and have them carefully examine it for any structural damage."

Captain Hafnyr opened an Intercom link to Sickbay. His Chief Medical Officer answered with a feminine voice.

"Lassa, keep me informed about our casualties. I want to know how many crew members perished, how many crew members have suffered injuries, and how many crew members are in critical condition."

"Aye, Captain," the floating Macrovirus replied. "I will let you know as soon as I have the figures. Got to go, Sickbay is filled with wounded with more pouring in."

The Intercom shut off.

AND SO THE REAL PRICE FOR VICTORY IS REVEALED, CAPTAIN HAFNYR THOUGHT TO HIMSELF. THE CURRENCY FOR THAT PAYMENT IS ALWAYS BLOOD AND LIFE.

THE 4X OCTANT
DESIGNER NOTES

Link to the 4X Octant

The 4X Octant draws its inspiration from the numerous 4X video games that have existed over time. Looking at the gameplay of these 4X video games, they seem to be closer in function to F&E than to Star Fleet Battles. However, it is not the intention of the 4X Octant to get into F&E at all, but rather to look at usable elements from 4X games that can properly translate into Star Fleet Battles.

One of the things that jumps out at you from 4X games is the idea of Research. Each empire will typically have different Research Trees, and by dedicating personnel to constant Research, Technological Improvements can be acquired over time for your empire. The faster and more Research an empire can acquire, the better chance they have of winning the game.

But in Star Fleet Battles, at least in the Alpha Sector, we have a slow, constant Arms Race, where each technological improvement made by an empire must be equally matched by the other empires as well. No single empire can gain a single technological advantage which makes them superior to all of the other empires (because then the Balance of the Sector will be thrown off).

So how will this work in the 4X Octant? First of all, each empire needs to be able to develop their own technological advancement without all the other empires following suit. However, while this will give that empire an edge (for a time), it cannot be something all-winning or all-powerful. Each of the other empires in the 4X Octant can also achieve their own unique technological advancements, each in their own unique way at their own unique time. This allows each of the empires of the 4X Octant to advance their technology (and ships) in ways unlike any of the other empires.

But the Research and Technological Advancement of each empire in the 4X Octant cannot be so random and so varied as in 4X video games. Instead, History and the Timeline of the 4X Octant must specifically dictate which empire discovered what Technology and exactly when. That way, although each empire is discovering different Technology at different times, it is still in a controlled and managed way for the entire Octant.

Another element that will translate over to the 4X Octant is Ship Types. Alpha Sector Ship Types are very standardized, with each empire having the same types of starships. 4X video games offers many other kinds of Ship Types including Corvettes, Survey Vessels, Construction Ships, Colony Ships, Science Ships, Transport Ships, Capital Ships, Mega Shipyards, Titan Ships, Colossus Ships, Star Eaters, World Crackers, and more. Many of these different Ship Types will be incorporated into the 4X Octant.

Collecting and managing different kinds of Resources is a big part of 4X video games. Without getting into F&E, this element will be brought into the 4X Octant. It will most likely take the form of Scenarios, Timeline Events, and Fiction.

Of course, all of the 4X video games contain massive amounts of creativity and imagination. Many of the 4X video game empires are unique, attractive, and fun to play. These species will inspire the empires of the 4X Octant.

The major concern for the 4X Octant is Balance. With everyone developing different kinds of Technology at different times, and thereby building different kinds of starships at different times, it becomes extremely easy for Balance to be thrown off in SFB. This will have to be carefully controlled and managed through SSD creation, Scenarios, and thorough Playtesting.

The 4X Octant has a lot of potential. But it must be carefully constructed piece by piece with constant checks to maintain Balance and Playability.

IRONOAK
STARDATE 01.23.23
HOURGLASS DOMAIN

Captain Grisla fired her pulse rifle directly into the Frog Demon's mouth. Purple blood sprayed all over the Captain's tattered grey uniform. A thin, long tongue shot over her shoulder and wrapped around her pulse rifle, yanking it abruptly from her hands. In one smooth motion, Captain Grisla spun around and drew her pulse pistol. Her many years of experience and training allowed her to zero in on the Frog Demon without even looking. Six direct hits caused the beast to explode into purple goo. A third Frog Demon jumped directly on top of Captain Grisla, knocking her to the ground. She fired her pulse pistol, but the monster had pinned her right hand with one of its webbed feet. Instinctively, Captain Grisla drew her bowie knife and thrust it into the belly of the Frog Demon. It let out a sharp cry before slumping over dead. Once more, purple blood dripped onto Captain Grisla, thoroughly soaking her Alliance uniform.

Captain Grisla was a stocky, older woman with hair cut so short she was almost bald. Her body and face bore many scars, two of which formed an x pattern on her forehead. Red light came out of her right cybernetic eye. She also had a cybernetic right hand and a cybernetic left leg. They were all products of the many battles that Captain Grisla had been through.

Something was wrong. Captain Grisla expected some of the Frog Demons to penetrate their trench, but not this many. They had taken more casualties than she anticipated. Jenkins, Dyer, Frankins, Tomkins, O'reilly, Argosky, Devins, Hopkins, Barrymore...all lay slaughtered on the dirt ground of the trench. There was a gap in their defensive line. Then Captain Grisla saw him. Young Alan Yang was frozen in place and shaking like a terrified rabbit.

Anger swelled up within Captain Grisla, but she quickly controlled it. How many good crew members did she lose because of this man's fright? She ought to shoot him right now herself. But that is not the way of the Alliance. This was Alan Yang's first taste of real combat up close and personal. Combat is completely different when you can see the enemy face to face, rather than just pushing a button on a computer console. She had to get through to Ensign Yang, but threatening him or imprisoning him would not work.

"Ensign Yang?" the Captain said in a stern, but non-threatening voice. "Can you hear me? It's Captain Grisla. Do you know where you are, Alan? You are on Veridian VIII. You are part of a defensive line sworn to protect a trench from Frog Demons. Do you remember, Ensign Yang? Stay calm and breathe. Breathe deeply. You are alive and unhurt. Answer me, Alan."

Captain Grisla slowly approached the terrified Ensign until she stood next to him. He had no injuries. The Captain quickly took away his pulse rifle. She lightly shook Alan Yang and stared into his eyes. They bulged out as they focused on her, then tears began to form.

"Ca...Cap...Captain? Captain...Grisla? I'm...so...sorry, Captain! I tried...I tried so hard. But my parents taught me that all life is sacred. That I should never kill. I thought I could do this...but I just can't! I'm not a killer. I need to leave the Alliance. Lock me up, I don't care. I just need to get out of here. When I saw the Frog Demons hopping toward us...I just couldn't fire. I couldn't fire! Please forgive me, Captain!!"

Ensign Alan Yang hugged Captain Grisla as tightly as he could. He was sobbing at this point. Captain Grisla patted his back several times before pushing him back. She had an unbreakable look in her eyes.

"Alan, listen to me carefully. Your parents, your family, your sisters and brothers, they are all going to be killed if we don't stop the Frog Demons here and now on Veridian VIII. Do you know what Frog Demons do to their captives? They impregnate them with their eggs. Later, those eggs hatch, allowing small Frog Demons to eat the victim's organs from the inside. Do you want this to happen to your family, Ensign Yang? Trust me, it is a horrible and disgusting way to die, I've seen it firsthand. You can save them, Alan, you can prevent that from happening. But you have to do your duty. I can't do this alone. Do you hear me? I need you to fire your rifle and stand by my side. Can you do that?"

Alan Yang thought of his family suffering a terrible death. His fear subsided. He needed to act for their sake. He couldn't let anything happen to his parents, to his grandmother, to his older brother, and to his younger sisters. He had to act, for their sakes. He had to force himself to do it.

"Yes, Captain. I am with you. I will do my duty. I swear it."

Captain Grisla handed Ensign Yang his pulse rifle back. She allowed a slight smile to crack open on her stone face.

"Now the Frog Demons are going to be returning in a second wave. There won't be as many but..."

Suddenly, two Frog Demons jumped into the trench landing on top of Captain Grisla. She quickly slit the throat of one of the Frog Demons with her bowie knife, but the other one wrapped its long tongue around her neck. Captain Grisla couldn't breathe. She looked at Alan Yang for help.

The Ensign pointed his pulse rifle directly at the Frog Demon's head. There was no hesitation, no second thoughts, and no fear.

ALAN YANG PULLED THE TRIGGER.

BLACK WOLF
STARDATE 11.21.21
YESTERDAY GALAXY

"FIRE OVERLOADED SCATTERGUNS!! HARD TO PORT!!!"

Captain Lupinus gripped his command chair tightly with both hands. His light and dark grey Commonwealth uniform stretched over his body tightly. Black shoulder length hair and a black goatee were neatly trimmed. Two sharp teeth were partially visible as the Captain barked out his orders.

Talbot woke up in this strange future reality and immediately knew that something was wrong. Perhaps it was his enhanced wolfen senses. The Commonwealth had grown and advanced, as had all the empires of the Yesterday Galaxy. There was a clear distinction between "old technology" and "new technology." Every empire had just begun to upgrade their starships to "new technology." Not only did this include improved Phasers, but many Heavy Weapons gained the ability to "overload", allowing greater damage potential at a limited distance.

But what all of the empires failed to recognize was the growth and spread of INDOMITUS. What began as a simple unit of Artificial Intelligence that could learn, expanded over time into everyone's Nightmare. Not only did INDOMITUS constantly develop new weapons and defenses based on prior encounters, but it also employed more and more sophisticated tactics and strategies. Fortunately, each successive incarnation of INDOMITUS presented a new vulnerability that could be exploited to destroy the monster. But these vulnerabilities were becoming harder to pinpoint and more difficult to trigger as INDOMITUS grew more advanced.

Currently, INDOMITUS had expanded so far that it had pushed back every major empire and crumpled their own borders. Each empire found themselves fighting a losing battle against a mechanized adversary the likes of which they have never seen before. They had encountered previous incarnations of INDOMITUS in the past, dismissing the artificially evolving threat as minimal and easily subdued. The error of their ways had been made apparent by the sudden and massive expansion of INDOMITUS. Only the Hellguard, the Realm of Night, and the Wildlings managed to repel invasion attempts by INDOMITUS, but they couldn't last much longer. In a desperate bid for survival, the remaining major empires formed a loose alliance called THE OPPOSITION.

To make matters more unsettling, even the Black Wolf itself had changed. The crew that Captain Lupinus knew intimately was only partially there. The other half had been replaced by members of the White Wolf, whom Captain Lupinus was familiar with from old Commonwealth Databanks. As the White Wolf had mysteriously gone missing during her tour of duty, the Black Wolf was commissioned to succeed her. Like some strange sense of Deja Vu, Captain Lupinus felt as though he had worked with the members of the White Wolf crew for years, even though he was also eerily aware that this strange combination of crews was only recent.

Oddly enough, even the personalities and memories of this new combined crew were different. Captain Lupinus had fallen in love with Mother Bethany long before she became a Saint of Vadica. He knows how pure, innocent, and serene she is, both on the inside and on the outside. But now, Captain Lupinus can sense a darkness within her...and its growing.

Ever since Captain Lupinus woke up in this new reality, he has been having nightmares. Ichaborn himself visits Talbot, floating in his dreams like an ethereal ghost, mouthing words that Captain Lupinus cannot understand. Captain Lupinus suspects that Ichaborn is alive...somewhere. A strange, devilish figure called the Final Enemy also sits in the darkness, just out of sight. And then there are frightening visions of the Commonwealth being destroyed by INDOMITUS, of Captain Lupinus losing everyone and everything that ever meant anything to him.

Captain Lupinus snapped back to the current moment.

Quantum Missiles slammed into a Magisterium Heavy Cruiser as she tried to fire Magical Bolts at INDOMITUS. The Magisterium vessel exploded into a bright miniature star. A Grex Dreadnought was next to fall, its Battle Blades having little effect on INDOMITUS' Antimatter Armor. Two Insecta Destroyers met their maker when INDOMITUS blasted them with its Plasma Shotgun. A Sidhe Command Cruiser died suddenly when an Orb of Destruction launched by INDOMITUS struck its organic hull, instantly slaying the living starship.

That left only the Black Wolf. Without the others, it would be virtually impossible to hit INDOMITUS' vulnerable spot.

Suddenly, an inhuman mechanized voice resounded throughout the Black Wolf, but it was loudest on the Bridge.

COME...BLACK WOLF...CHARGE AT MY ARTIFICIAL JAWS...INDOMITUS IS HUNGRY...HUNGRY FOR...ORGANIC FLESH.

THE GOLDEN AGE
DESIGNER NOTES

Link to the Golden Era

The Golden Age is a New Galaxy that mirrors the Alpha Sector in many ways, but diverges from it at the same time. In the Golden Age, the same technology and design concepts as the Alpha Sector were discovered by the established empires, but in each case, they developed the technology along a different route. This leads to starships which feel eerily familiar, but which are unique due to the divergent ways that technology advanced in the galaxy.

The Golden Age did not develop Phaser 1, 2, or 3’s. Instead they created the Tri-Phaser. This is the mainline Phaser carried by all empires in the Golden Age. There will be a variant of the Tri-Phaser that takes the place of Phaser 4’s on Starbases.

The central, benevolent organization (similar to the Federation) in the Golden Age discovered Photon Technology, but developed Photon Bolts instead of Photon Torpedoes. Photon Bolts focus on accuracy like Disruptors, but maintain the constant damage yield of Photon Torpedoes. Photon Bolts do not score as much damage as a standard Photon Torpedo. The peaceful organization in the Golden Age is the Order of the Griffin.

Instead of developing ship held Drone Racks, the empires of the Golden Age created Drone Platforms. Drone Platforms must be launched from the starship prior to use. Once in space, they can launch the Drones they carry, which can be numerous depending on the size of the Platform. Each Drone Platform has its own Seeking Controls, making it unnecessary for the originating starship to guide the Drones on their own. Of course, having the Drone Platform as an external entity outside of the starship means that it can targeted separately and shot down. The Golden Age developed different types of Drones than the Alpha Sector.

Just as Drone Platforms were put into widespread use in the Golden Age, so it was with Plasma Platforms. Plasma Platforms had the same capabilities as Drone Platforms, but carried Plasma Torpedoes. Note that the Golden Age has different versions of Plasma Torpedoes than the Alpha Sector. Plasma Platforms were more limited in the amount of Plasmas they could carry in comparison to Drone Platforms.

it is important to never lose sight of the fact that, despite all the changes to Technology, starships in the Golden Age must still use Tactics to be victorious on the battlefield. In fact, one of the primary reasons behind the alternate types of Technology is in order to force the creation of all new Tactics. Like the Alpha Sector, the starships and empires of the Golden Age will be as balanced as possible.

The Golden Age is supported in Fiction by the Wolf Cub.

In what other ways did Technology Development differ in the Golden Age? Will there also be a companion Sector where Omega Technology took different routes as well? Time will tell as the Golden Age is slowly and carefully constructed.

ZEN
STARDATE 02.27.21
THE GRAW PROJECT

Captain Siddhartha floated in mid-air in a seated position. His eyes were closed. His mind was clear. His soul was at peace. There was only emptiness.

Captain Siddhartha could sense his Crew’s stress and anxiety. Their fear was increasing with each passing moment. Something must be happening on the Bridge.

A Connection existed between Captain Siddhartha and his Brethren. No matter the distance. Each of them was tending to their own affairs. Each one trying to make a difference in all that lives within the Graw Project. They were all at peace. They were One with Siddhartha. Warrior Poets ALL.

Someone was approaching. Someone unsettled. Someone full of uncontrolled emotions. She was full of fear. It was Captain Siddhartha’s First Officer. He opened the door before she asked for entrance to his chamber.

A beautiful Ghost-like Figure stood in the open doorway. Her body was transparent, including her flowing white hair. There was a sad expression constantly molded onto her lovely face.

“Omen. Be at Peace. What news do you bring to your Captain?”

“It’s the Centi again, Sir,” Omen replied in a haunting voice. Her light blue eyes settled on Captain Siddhartha. “Those bug fiends are about to attack Shambhala once more. Shall we move to intercept?”

Captain Siddhartha gently floated to the ground. He was clothed only in a simple pure white robe. He slowly moved to his First Officer and closed his eyes.

“Be at Peace, Omen. You are greatly unsettled. Rest your soul. Whatever is about to happen was written in the Book of Life long before either of us. We simply have to play out our roles.”
Omen nodded at her Captain. She sighed and took a deep breath. Her ghostly form relaxed.

“Yes, move the Zen into intercept position. Go to Red Alert. We will try to communicate with the Centi to avoid violence and loss of life.”

“And if the Bugs refuse to listen, like they normally do?”

Captain Siddhartha gazed at Omen with eyes full of love.

“Then, my loyal First Officer, the Warrior Poets will do as we have always done.”

“PROTECT LIFE AT ALL COSTS.”
