U.S.S. EXODUS
STARDATE 01.10.21
SECTOR ZERO

Captain Moshe stared at the View Screen as the stars sped by quickly. His mind was quite unsettled.

The Entire Galaxy was Dying. Homeworld Suns were strangely reaching the End of their Lifetime ahead of schedule. A Black Plague sweeps across Entire Empires, decimating Whole Populations at a time. Constant War has taken its toll on Every Empire; their Economies were in a Death Spiral. Technological Advancement has slowed to a Crawl. Medical Capabilities have been pushed to their Limit. Planetary Resources have been nearly Depleted. Everyone was struggling just to Stay Alive. Every Empire in Sector Zero knew that their Days were Numbered. A Joint Commission has been formed to propose Emergency Plans to Save what is left of Sector Zero. Not All Empires have joined the Joint Commission.

“Penny for your Thoughts?”

Captain Moshe looked up from his Command Chair. Chief Medical Officer Owusua was staring down at him. Captain Moshe smiled.

“Doctor. Forgive me. I was…Contemplating the Future. Is everything alright in Sickbay?”

Doctor Owusua placed her dark hand on Captain Moshe’s shoulder. Her large afro extended out of her head in two different directions. “Everything’s fine, Captain. It’s you I’m worried about. I’m responsible for your health, after all. Now, you look Troubled. What’s Bothering you?”

Captain Moshe paused. He stroked his thick grey beard out of habit. His forehead crinkled. '

“I believe you already know, Doctor. Sector Zero is Dying. And there’s Nothing that You or I can do about it. Isn’t that enough to Trouble anyone?”

“Who designated you Savior of the Galaxy?” Doctor Owusua said laughing. Her smile was contagious. “Don’t put too much Burden on your Back, Captain…it just might Break from Too Much Weight!”

“Am I interrupting?”

Captain Moshe stared at his First Officer. She was tall with red hair and pink eyes. Her Powerful Psionic Abilities were tied to her Emotions, which she kept under Careful Control.

“No, Ruth. Of course not. The Good Doctor here was just…reminding me to Not be Too Serious. As usual. Did you have something to Report?”

“Just that we are approaching Gibeah. They sent their Distress Call less than 10 Minutes ago. Being the Closest Ship, we arrived in record time. Our recent communications to Gibeah have gone unanswered. They may be in Dire Trouble.”

First Officer Ruth’s Eyes glowed Bright Red for a moment. “Captain Moshe. I sense that you are Troubled about the Demise of Sector Zero. I assume that this is what Doctor Owusua is attempting to cheer you up about?”

Doctor Owusua gave First Officer Ruth a look of irritation. Ruth stared back at the Doctor with a blank expression.

“Not now,” Captain Moshe said to both his Doctor and his First Officer. “Our Primary Task is assessing what happened to Gibeah. We will continue this conversation later.”

Captain Moshe stared at the View Screen once again. The Planet Gibeah was only a distant dot, but it was steadily growing larger. The United League of Worlds had established a Colony on Gibeah. It was a peaceful Colony without any armaments. Captain Moshe feared the worst.

Suddenly, Three Daemon Space Submarines materialized out of the darkness of space.

It’s a Daemon Wolf Pack! Captain Moshe thought. We’ve been lured into an Ambush!!

“Captain, they are preparing to launch Plasma Torpedoes!” First Officer Ruth reported while staring into an extended binocular device at her station.

Don’t we have Enough Troubles in Sector Zero without resorting to Needless Violence?

“Red Alert!” Captain Moshe announced. A Red Triangle began to flash repeatedly above the Bridge.

“Charge Phaser Banks to Maximum. Arm the Photon Torpedoes. Full Sensor Sweeps of the Area for any other Daemon Space Submarines. Prepare a Wild Weasel. Let’s show the Daemon what the League is Made Of. Battle Stations!!”

Captian Moshe’s intense gaze was focused on the Tactical Position of each of the Daemon Space Submarines. They were slow vessels, but each carried a Powerful Plasma Torpedo. They were wisely not clustered together, but rather spread out so that their heavy weapons would hit the Exodus from different angles.

“Charge the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Power Absorbers to Standard Levels. Charge the First, Second, and Sixth Power Absorbers to Reinforced Levels. Ruth, prepare to channel Absorbed Energy into the Batteries on my Command.”

THEY PICKED THE WRONG PREY FOR THEIR TRAP THIS TIME.

BLACK WOLF
STARDATE 11.23.21
YESTERDAY GALAXY

"RRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

Captain Lupinus transformed into a large Black Werewolf, partially tearing his grey Commonwealth uniform. His chest heaved like a fiery volcano. Razor sharp claws extended where his hands used to be. Even the Bridge Crew, who had seen his change many times before, was shocked.

"INDOMITUS, YOU'RE GOING TO PAY FOR EVERYONE YOU KILLED!!" Talbot howled. His yellow eyes bulged from their sockets. Captain Lupinus thought of all the people who had died aboard the Magisterium, Grex, Insecta, and Sidhe vessels. They gave their lives for THE OPPOSITION.

Beloved, calm yourself! Mother Bethany said, speaking directly into Talbot's thoughts. We cannot exploit this version of INDOMITUS without the coordinated actions of an entire fleet. We have to give up this area of space to INDOMITUS and regroup at Sigma Four where the Commonwealth Fleet New Dawn is gathering. INDOMITUS is purposely trying to trigger your emotions. Remember, INDOMITUS is now well versed in Psychological Warfare!

Mother Bethany spoke mentally to Eleanor, the Black Wolf's Inertian Navigator. Elly, get us out of here, maximum warp! Set a course for Sigma Four. We'll regroup with the New Dawn there.

Morduug, the Blind Gazer serving as Science Officer, contacted Mother Bethany with his thoughts. I was able to gather a substantial amount of information on this INDOMITUS, Mother Bethany. I will study it carefully. Hopefully, it will reveal further weaknesses in this incarnation of INDOMITUS.

Captain Lupinus calmed down and transformed into his human form once again. He sat down in his command chair, taking deep breaths. A colorful Butterfly landed on his shoulder. It was ANIMUS, the Changeling who was his Spiritual Advisor and Personal Guard. Changelings could take any form except humanoid.

"Don't worry, Talbot. There will be justice for the fallen. INDOMITUS may be a near unstoppable force, but nothing can conquer what is Right and True in life!"

Captain Lupinus turned to Chrysanthemum, his Chloris Communications Officer. "Mum, send a subspace message on a coded channel to Sigma Four. Alert the New Dawn Fleet of our estimated arrival time. Keep me informed of any responses or messages from other fleets engaging INDOMITUS."

Captain Lupinus gazed at his First Officer. Mother Bethany was his true love. She was beautiful as she ran the Bridge while he recomposed himself. Her long red hair danced by her shoulders as she moved about. Her deep blue eyes were firm and confident. She was radiant. The Saint of Vadica wore her traditional all-white robe. Talbot projected his thoughts for her to hear.

You are my strength. You are my fortress. You shine your light into my darkness. You tame the beast inside of me. You remind me what it means to be human. I love you with all my heart.

Mother Bethany turned and stared at Talbot with loving eyes from across the room. She smiled.

I WILL ALWAYS BE A PART OF YOU, MY LOVE. WE ARE TWO HALVES OF THE SAME WHOLE.

There have been three different outlines for this vessel so far, none of which sat well with me for this iconic ship. The systems, weapons, shields, and tables have always remained the same.

This fourth outline will be the final version. With its Triple Saucers, Centerline Platform, and Zigzag Nacelles, it now has a very distinct look that is similar to, but different from, the Federation.

All future Commonwealth ships will emulate this design.

THE OLD GUARD
STARDATE 02.15.22
SECTOR 50

In a small, dimly lit room aboard the Old Guard, a Counselor interviews Captain Severick for the record. The two are good friends, and yet the task has to be completed as a matter of procedure. They both know the answers that are forthcoming, but the questions still need to be asked.

"And so you felt nothing?" Mitch East asked while staring down at a computer tablet where he was jotting down electronic notes.

"No, nothing," Captain Severick replied coldly. His stern gaze met Mitch's eyes whenever they looked up.

"Do you consider that normal when you have just ordered the deaths of hundreds of lives?"

Captain Severick paused for a moment before answering. "Mr. East. Europa is at war with Babylon. As Captain, I did what had to be done. My superiors would expect no less. As a matter of honor, I gave the damaged P3A Battlecruiser a chance to surrender. Their remaining lives would have been spared. We would have transported the survivors to a Babylon Base. But the Babylon Battlecruiser refused to surrender. That is the choice they made. I respected that. So I gave the order to fire."

Mister East was quiet as he scribbled down more notes. He looked up at Captain Severick.

"Captain, I understand why you gave the order to fire. It has been well documented in the Log. But I am more concerned with how the order affected you internally."

Captain Severick stared at Mister East without blinking or saying a word. Moments later, he finally spoke.

"I'm not sure what you mean, Counselor."

Mister East formed a sympathetic look on his face. "Captain, you just took hundreds of lives. Enemy or not, doesn't that...bother you...at all?"

This time Captain Severick was quick to respond.

"Mr. East. I have taken lives in the past. Many of them. And I will take more in the future. It is not the Captain's prerogative to pick and choose which lives to take. When the time comes, the Captain must do his duty, as must each member of his crew. If that duty calls for me to take hundreds of enemy lives, so be it. If it requires for me to take thousands of enemy lives, so be it. If it requires for me to take millions of enemy lives, so be it. I will do what must be done."

Mister East's eyes bulged slightly. He continued his questioning.

"I understand that, Captain. And your long record confirms your words. But you didn't answer my question. Does it bother you internally when you take lives?"

Captain Severick paused once more. His stare remained fixed on Mister East.

"In combat, does a soldier regret having to shoot an enemy soldier that is about to shoot him? Does the crew of a tank regret having to blast an enemy tank bearing down on them? Does a fighter pilot regret having to shoot down an enemy jet that is attempting to lock missiles on them? No, Mr. East, they do not. They know that if they do not do their duty, if they do not act, lives will be lost. And so it is with a starship. If a starship destroys an enemy starship that is trying to destroy them, does the Captain feel regret for having given the order to fire? The answer is No."

This time it was Mister East who went quiet for a few moments. He quickly wrote down the Captain's response on his electronic tablet. Then he met Captain Severick's gaze once more.

"Captain, I am very concerned. It is perfectly normal for a human to feel some kind of emotion after claiming another's life, even if it is the life of one's enemy. Some struggle with those emotions, some do not. But to deny that you feel such emotions, to suppress them, to bury them deep within your psyche, that is very unhealthy. Over time, it can be extremely self-destructive. Now, as your Counselor, you can confide fully in me. I am here whenever you need to talk. And you can be completely honest with me. I will not judge you. There's no need for fake facades or tough egoism. It is alright for you to feel emotions."

"I disagree."

Mister East choked and coughed, caught completely off-guard by the Captain's reply. "Ex...excuse me?"

"Counselor, the Captain does not have the luxury of feeling emotions as a normal civilian does. There are lives on the line. My crew is depending on me. I cannot let emotions affect my orders or decision making. To do so would be a tragic mistake. Every situation must be examined rationally, logically, and objectively. Then the best decision possible must be reached. But that decision is not based on or influenced by emotions. Emotions are erratic, unpredictable, fleeting, and chaotic. So, no. As Captain, I cannot allow myself to feel emotions. I dare not, I shall not, I cannot. I refuse to."

Mister East stared silently at Captain Severick, wondering what kind of man he was interacting with.

"Now, if there is nothing further, Counselor, I have duties to attend to. I will consider this session ended."

Captain Severick adjusted his uniform, activated the Anti-Grav in his Wheelchair, and then floated out of the room. Mister East was left alone with his thoughts and his tablet.

AND DEEP...DEEP...DEEP WITHIN CAPTAIN SEVERICK, THE SOULS OF HUNDREDS OF BABYLON CREW MEMBERS CRIED OUT FOR RECOGNITION.

THE UNEARTHED TAPES
SUB-ALPHA
DESIGNER NOTES

Link to the Unearthed Tapes

There have been many New Empires posted on the internet over the prior decades. In my opinion, most were mediocre designs with some creativity mixed in here and there. However, there were a few rare gems, which I believe bordered on "professional", if one could call it such a thing. The Unearthed Tapes rediscovers these lost treasures, modifying them and updating them as necessary.

One of the main issues is that most of these Lost Empires were designed as being part of the Alpha Sector. Deleting all references to the Alpha Sector is the first change that needs to occur all across the board with the Lost Empires. Because the original intention for these Lost Empires was to be a part of the Alpha Sector, most of them utilize the PH-1, PH-2, and PH-3. This will be kept for the most part and only changed if necessary.

My initial thought for these Lost Empires was to simply place them in the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems, as yet another one of its thousands of members. Unfortunately, the Intergalactic Assemblage of Systems lacks Balance since it supposed to represent a wide spectrum (Early Years to X-Tech) of New Technology carried by New Empires. I concluded that the Rare Gems which made up the Lost Empires deserved to have Balance, and therefore, their own New Galaxy. This New Galaxy would strive to incorporate Balance between Ships and Balance between Empires as much as possible (like the Alpha Sector).

So the Changes/Modifications/Updates to the Lost Empires that need to occur will follow this General Outline:

1) Redesign/Modify the Weapons/Devices so they are Balanced (as much as possible).
2) Redesign/Modify the Ship Systems/Shields so they are Balanced (as much as possible).
3) Remove all References to the Alpha Sector in Backgrounds and R-Sections.
4) Place each Lost Empire on the Map. This will determine each Lost Empire's Neighbors.
5) Modify/Adjust Weapons/Devices and their Historical/Technological Development based on their Neighbors.
6) Develop cohesive Timeline which incorporates all Lost Empires.
7) Revise Empire Name/Background/R-Section/Ship Descriptions as needed.
8) Retain the Essence of each Lost Empire (as intended by the original creator) as much as possible.
9) Playtest the Lost Empires against one another and Update/Modify for Balance as needed.
10) Develop Scenarios, Playtest, and Revise as needed.

Credit will be given to the Original Creator(s) for each Lost Empire as long as it is known.

When the word Balance is used, in this case, it refers to Alpha Sector Balance. This is what most of the Lost Empires sought to originally be a part of, so it is appropriate.

Tapes have been Unearthed that indicate there was more to the data transmission than originally believed. New...Lost Empires have been detailed which occupied their own region of space, where they lived and died fighting their own bitter and heroic wars. This region of space was later dubbed: Sub-Alpha.

LEVIATHAN
STARDATE 09.12.24
HIDDEN ENCLAVE

Link to previous Leviathan entries

A slow moving tentacle cautiously raised a cup full of hot coffee up so that Captain Ocyth could take a sip. He let out a sigh as he stared at the stars. Captain Ocyth hated this place, as did every single member of his crew. The stars were dim here, murky things that haunted you like eyes watching you through a thick mist. The whole region looked like this, even the planets had a ghostly appearance. It's no wonder this place is the one location containing resources which facilitate Spectral Technology. And yet Captain Ocyth would gladly give it all up in an instant if he and his crew could return home.

Home. Captain Ocyth wondered how the wars were faring. Surely the fleet needed the Leviathan. But in a cruel twist of fate, the Leviathan was snatched away from where she was needed most and brought to this evil, dark place. It was enough to drive any Captain mad. And Captain Ocyth and his crew would surely have gone mad, if not for the intervention of the Collaboration.

The Collaboration. The only way to survive in this grim, foreboding region. The association that allowed for the continued maintanence and production of their Limited Weaponry and Devices. The organization where friend and foe worked together, where hated enemies became allies, where past grievances were put aside. For to refuse to do so meant exile from the Collaboration, and being alone in this place meant certain destruction.

Captain Ocyth hated the Dragons. They killed many of his family and friends. He could never truly forgive them for what they had done. He and his crew rejoiced with every Dragon death that the Leviathan achieved.

How ironic then, that there was a gigantic, dead Space Dragon floating beside the Leviathan. In his homeland, he would loved the sight and celebrated. But here, things were different. The Collaboration needed every Space Dragon it could get, and they were extremely rare.

The Leviathan heard the Blacktooth's cry for help, its very last distress call. But the Leviathan arrived too late. The Space Dragon and her entire crew were deceased.

YET ANOTHER VICTIM OF THE GREAT BEASTS.

Con Trung turned on the lights in her new quarters. She was a petite Vietnamese woman with oversized glasses. Behind her, four crewmen carried cages, aquariums, tanks, containers, and vessels. They stumbled into the room, clearly overburdened.

“Uh…where do you want these, ma’am?” the crewman blurted out strained from the weight.

“Over there, and there, and over here,” Con instructed in a light voice. She was already planning how to arrange everything once the crewmen left.

The four crewmen dropped all the items off in the locations that Officer Trung indicated. They wiped their brows.

“If I may ask, ma’am?” one crewman said as the other three crewmen left the room to complete other duties. “What is all this for? We don’t need bugs in outer space, right? So why bring them along? What was it you studied again? Enzy…Entor…Entolo…”

“Entomology,” Con answered quickly, finishing the crewman’s thoughts. “I study Insects. You know insects are fascinating creatures. They have been around longer than the Dinosaurs. Bees provide valuable pollination for plants. Earthworms improve the soil wherever they go. A Cockroach can hold its breath for 40 minutes. The Bombardier Beetle is a master of chemical warfare. Aphids absorb solar energy. The Bark Spider’s web is 25 times stronger than steel. The Fishing Spider can literally run across water. The Dung Beetle can pull 1000 times its own weight. It takes a drill to pierce the dense armor of an Ironclad Beetle. And Fleas can jump 1000 times their own body length. We can learn so much from insects, if we just take the time to study them. You know, so many modern inventions have been patterned after insects, from medicine to flying to camouflage to eyesight to locomotion to armor to weapons and more!”

Con Trung was clearly excited. Her eyes bulged, which, when magnified by her large glasses, seemed 4 times larger than normal.

The crewman was speechless. He didn’t know what to say. Insects were annoying things to be squashed at every opportunity.

“That’s all well and good, ma’am, but what use is any of that in outer space?”

Con Trung sighed. She could see the lack of understanding in the crewman’s eyes.

“Well, imagine what we might find on new worlds. Imagine the strange and wondrous insect populations we might come across! Think of what we could learn from how they have evolved and adapted to their native environment. It’s going to take someone familiar with insects in order to recognize these subtle clues and patterns.”

“Ah…I see. Very good, ma’am. So glad to have you aboard! Let us know if you need anything else.”

The crewman rushed out of Con Trung’s quarters.

“It’s alright, my Babies. Momma’s here now. Everything’s going to be fine. I’m going to take care of you. I know all your needs. Just be good, ok? I need you all to behave. We’ll eat something later. For now, rest and go to sleep.”

Con Trung began to arrange all of her insects in a precise manner. She hummed lightly as she did so, checking to make sure all of her pets were healthy and vibrant.

It wasn’t long before Con Trung, the Entomology Officer aboard the Columbiad, would be given an Unofficial Title by the rest of her crew mates. It wasn’t something she wanted, or enjoyed, but she tolerated it nonetheless. They called her…

THE BUG LADY.

MERLIN
STARDATE 07.03.21
PRIME SECTOR

“We’ve lost Auxiliary Control! Hull is ninety percent gone, Laboratories are seventy five percent destroyed, there is only One Shuttle left, All Photon Torpedoes are destroyed, we have only one Short Range Cannon left, the Ultra Warp Missile Rack is in ruins, the Probe is gone, there is only one Phaser left, and Warp Drive is half gone!! Three of our Shields are Down!!! Heavy casualties reported on All Decks!!!!”

Captain Elizabeth’s face was full of black stains. She’s not sure where they came from. The Bridge was hit and there were fires. Luckily, they put them all out. Lovecraft is no longer in his seat. He is down below working side by side with the remaining Crewmen to keep the Merlin in one piece. Dr. Sap has returned to Sickbay. From her brief reports, she has her hands full just keeping the injured alive.

How could I have been such a Fool? Elizabeth thought to herself. In my arrogance and greed, I pursued the Stumgeschutz into the Sexton Cloud, thinking I could rid the Death Cult of one of their prized Battlecruisers. I fell for their trap and Two New Death Cult Battlecruisers emerged from the Sexton Cloud. They had been waiting for me. It appears that the Stumgeschutz’s “mistake” of getting too close on her last Battle Run was actually no mistake at all. She was feigning her injuries to draw me after her. And, like a brand new Captain fresh out of the Academy, I fell for it! Don’t the Gods punish Mortals for Hubris? Now my Crew is paying for my mistake with their Lives…

“We’re not going to make it to Outpost Colchester!” Fafnir reported as he steered the Merlin on her course. The small Dragonling was trying to keep his fear in check. Still, his body was shaking. “The Breithaupt, the Fiehler, and the Stumgeschutz will overtake us before then!!”

Even if we make it to Outpost Colchester, they cannot save us, Elizabeth mused. The Lionheart is three days away. There is no way she can make it here in time. And she’s the closest Alliance of Lords starship…

Captain Elizabeth spun around in her Command Chair to face her Communications Officer. Brimstone, a lovely green Humanoid Butterfly, was busy trying to coordinate an overwhelming amount of communication transmitting throughout the Merlin.

“Brim! Send out an Emergency Distress Call on ALL Channels!! Direct it to anyone within range who might be able to hear it! Do it NOW!!!”

“Yes, Captain!”

“Captain…?” Ignis announced in an eerie voice full of hesitation. The floating ball of energy wisked out of reality momentarily and then reappeared again. “We are passing the Titan Graveyard…”

It took Captain Elizabeth less than a second to make her decision. “Fafnir, new heading. Take us directly into the Titan Graveyard!”

Una quickly spoke up. The Fair Folk Science Officer was calm and composed, however. Her eyes glittered with stars within them. “Captain, may I respectfully remind you that the Titan Graveyard is strictly off limits per the Alliance of Lords. To break that order would mean…”

“I know what it means!” Captain Elizabeth said loudly, letting her emotions and the dire situation get the best of her. Her ship was dying. Rudeness was justified in this case. “It won’t matter a whole lot if we’re all dead and the Merlin is destroyed, will it?!?”

Una went quiet. She returned to her work without saying any more words.

Captain Elizabeth felt bad for Una, but her outburst was understandable. After all, she was Human wasn’t she?

The Titan Graveyard. The site of a Monstrous Battle waged by the Great Ones. The devastation was unbelievable. There are ruined ships, debris, broken planetoids, cracked moons, stellar flames, tachyon currents, unimaginable monsters, wondrous lost technology, and weapons of great power. The Alliance of Lords lost six exploratory vessels trying to explore the Titan Graveyard. Then they sent in a whole fleet of warships. The entire fleet was never heard from again.

I must be out of my mind. But at least in there we have a chance, if even a tiny one. Out here, we have zero.

Merlin raced into the Titan Graveyard like a fox running from three hungry wolves.

THE BREITHAUPT, THE FEIHLER, AND THE STUMGESCHUTZ FOLLOWED RIGHT BEHIND HER…

HEIRS TO FATE - VENUS
STARDATE 10.16.22
X-SECTOR

A shimmering flash of light announced the arrival of six individuals on the surface of Petrus-IV. The Landing Party consisted of Captain Ichabeth, Doctor Freya, Science Officer Archimedes, and Security Officers Robinson, Cruse, and Defoe. They were in the center of Outpost Bakira, a remote survey station on the outskirts of the Protectorate.

Outpost Bakira, which consisted only of less than a dozen small buildings, was surrounded by a ring of hills composed of dense, jagged stone. A cold, light breeze blew through the air. There was nothing but silence in the entire Outpost.

Everyone in the Landing Party stared in shock at what they saw all around them. Now they knew the reason why the Protectorate had lost contact with Outpost Bakira.

The officers and scientists of Outpost Bakira were all frozen in mid motion. They were statues, some in running positions, some in walking positions, some in sitting positions. But the most disturbing thing was the fact that they were each covered in a layer of ice, with icicles hanging down from their limbs and faces. Many of them wore a surprised expression.

Quickly, Captain Ichabeth took charge of the situation. "Robinson, Cruse, Defoe, establish a perimeter around the Outpost. Identify and report any threats to our safety. Do not engage on your own. Freya, examine the residents of Outpost Bakira. I want to know what happened here. Archimedes, assess the condition of the Outpost. Make sure it is in working order and report any malfunctions or defects."

The three Security Officers wearing red shirts fanned out and began walking toward the edges of the Outpost. Archimedes, who looked like a five foot tall, faceless Mannequin made of an unknown metal, walked calmly toward the Outpost's Command Structure. One could immediately tell that Archimedes was not human, even from a distance, for his strides were perfectly spaced like a machine.

Freya slowly made her way over to the nearest frozen officer. She was covered in an ornate cloak with a long hood, a symbol of her Druidic Heritage. Although she walked with a hunched over posture, like an elderly woman near the end of her days, Freya's skin and face were smooth and beautiful as if she was in her prime. Freya pulled out her Tricorder, which lit up with lights and beeped when activated.

A worried look came over the Doctor's pretty face. "Captain...it's unbelievable. There is Cryogenic Nanotechnology in their blood. I have never seen the like. We must transport one of the frozen officers up to Venus for a more detailed and thorough examination. I need the Advanced Medical Devices aboard Venus for further analysis."

"Nanotech?" Ichabeth said in a disturbed voice. "Some kind of Bio Weapon? Is it airborne? Are we at risk? If we transport one of them up to Venus will they infect everyone up there?"

"Negative, Captain," Freya answered while examining her Tricorder results. "The particles don't appear to be airborne. If they were, we would all have been immediately frozen upon arrival. I don't think we should jump to the conclusion that this is a Bio Weapon, although we certainly shouldn't rule out the possibility. I will take every precaution while transporting one of the the officers up to Venus."

Captain Ichabeth nodded, flipped open her Communicator, and contacted Venus. Her First Officer answered.

"Doctor Freya is beaming back up to Venus with one of the officers from Outpost Bakira. They are all frozen solid by Cryogenic Nanotechnology. Follow Freya's specific orders in regards to decontamination procedures. I don't want anyone else from Venus transporting down to the Outpost. Maintain orbit and continue running continuous scans of the surface. Notify me immediately if you discover anything out of the ordinary."

Ichabeth closed her Communicator. Minutes later, Doctor Freya and one of the frozen officers disappeared in a flash of light.

AND FOR A FEW MOMENTS, ICHABETH HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT ICHADRED, AND WHAT HAPPENED AT THE LAST FAMILY GATHERING...

(UTR1.1) HEAVY CRUISER (CA):

* THIS HEAVY CRUISER DESCRIPTION WAS WRITTEN BY MIKE RAPER *

The mainstay of the Tycosian (Tychor) fleet. The CA is a good all around ship, though it is more focused on combat than on anything else. With four medium plasma cannons it can delver considerable punch at shorter ranges, even out performing the photon torpedo at point blank range. It has better than average command facilities, as well.
* I WOULD ADD THE FOLLOWING TO THE DESCRIPTION*
Outfitted with two Point Defense Plasma Racks, the Tychor Heavy Cruiser possessed substantial defense against Drones and Fighters. While known for its limited number of Shuttles, the Tychor Heavy Cruiser was well armed with a full battery of Phasers: 4 PH-1's and 6 PH-2's. The ability to launch Plasma Torpedoes from its Plasma Cannons made the Tychor Heavy Cruiser a fearsome adversary in tactical combat.

DESIGNER NOTES

Balancing and Presenting the Tycosian (Tychor) Heavy Cruiser for the Unearthed Tapes (Sub-Alpha) proved to be more difficult and time consuming than I originally thought. I'm sure that Mike Raper would disagree with some of the Design Decisions I've made, but his original design intent (to be a part of the Alpha Sector) was much different from my design intent for the Unearthed Tapes (Sub-Alpha). These Designer Notes will be quite extended because there are many design areas to be considered for the Tychor Heavy Cruiser.

The Plasma Cannon was the first subject that needed to be examined. Mike's original Plasma Cannon (Medium and Light) generated 20 Damage at Range 0-1 (PLC-M) and 10 Damage at Range 0-1 (PLC-L). His Plasma Cannon was armed over two turns and required 4+4 Energy for PLC-M and 2+2 Energy for PLC-L.

Given that an Overloaded Photon Torpedo can generate a maximum of 16 Damage at Range 0-1, I immediately had a problem with the 20 points of Damage he had established. For comparison, I looked at the Implosion Bolt (Trobrin - Omega but still worth an examination), the Warp Augmented Rail Gun (Jindarian) and the Photon Torpedo.

The Implosion Bolt generates a maximum of 20 Damage at Range 0 (only not Range 1). Implosion Bolts are armed over three turns and require 1+2+3 (they can be rush fired on the second turn by applying 3 points of reserve power (only)). The Implosion Bolt scores 18 Damage at Ranges 1-3. We can see that while Mike's original Plasma Cannon requires a bit more energy (4+4 vs 1+2+3), it can score 20 Damage at Range 1 while the Implosion Bolt cannot. While this additional Hex may not seem like much, in actual combat on the tabletop, it makes a huge difference.

The Warp Augmented Rail Gun can fire every turn (!) and requires 3 points of energy to fire. It can generate 20 Damage at Range 0 and 17 Damage at Range 1-5. Again, you will note that Mike's original Plasma Cannon has the advantage of delivering 20 Damage at Range 1, whereas the Warp Augmented Rail Gun cannot. The Warp Augmented Rail Gun may have its own balancing issues, but we're not focusing on that particular weapon at this time.

Now, as we all know, an Overloaded Photon Torpedo can fire at Ranges 0-1 and deliver 16 Damage maximum. Obviously, Mike's original Plasma Cannon scoring 20 Damage at Range 0-1 is a substantial increase from 16. This means that an alpha strike with 4 Plasma Cannons at Range 0 will score 80 Damage versus 4 Overloaded Photons at Range 0 which would score 64 Damage maximum.

Interestingly, one of Mike's later (the following year) charts shows a Medium Plasma Cannon (PLC-M) delivering 18 Damage at Range 0-1, not 20. So perhaps he revised it after some thought or feedback. But all my original Tycosian SSD's (designed by Mike Raper) show 20 Damage at Range 0-1. Additionally, the Arming Cost of 4+4 only makes sense for the 20 Damage amount (because it scores 16 Damage at Ranges 2-3).

So, after examining the Implosion Bolt, the Warp Augmented Rail Gun, and the Overloaded Photon Torpedo, what decisions did I make regarding balancing the Plasma Cannon? At Ranges 0-1, Damage was changed from 20 to 18. This means a Tychor maximum alpha strike would be 72 Damage as opposed to the (4) Overloaded Photons maximum of 64 Damage. This is slightly more Damage than the max Photon Damage and is now acceptable (in my opinion). The Plasma Cannon retains the advantage of that powerful Damage Output at Range 1, which I believe makes the Plasma Cannon somewhat unique compared to other heavy weapons. Once Ranges 0-1 were updated to 18 Damage (instead of 20), the rest of the Damage/Range amounts for the Medium Plasma Cannon were scaled down appropriately.

But that was only the Medium Plasma Cannon (PLC-M). Now I had to look at the Light Plasma Cannon (PLC-L). Mike's original PLC-L was armed over two turns and scored 10 Damage at Ranges 0-1. Compared to an Overloaded Disruptor, taking two turns to arm for such a low Damage amount was too long in my opinion. The Light Plasma Cannon should be a weapon that can fire every turn (based on the damage it can score).

Mike's Original Light Plasma Cannon costs 2+2. This cost was comparative to an Overloaded Disruptor (which is 4 Energy to Arm). However, as the Range extends out, Mike's Damage for the Light Plasma Cannon becomes more similar to a Standard Disruptor Bolt (which costs 2 Energy to Arm). Should you pay 4 Points of Energy (2+2) for something that scores Damage like a Standard Disruptor Bolt at longer Ranges?

Another consideration is that Mike's original Light Plasma Cannon scored exactly half of the Damage of the Medium Plasma Cannon. I decided to keep this aspect, but needed to revise the Damage Scale based on the Range because my version of the Medium Plasma Cannon yielded different Damage Results. For example, my Medium Plasma Cannon now scored 14 Damage at Ranges 2-3. This means that the Light Plasma Cannon at Ranges 2-3 should score 7 Damage (exactly half).

Mike Raper stressed the unique ability of the Plasma Cannon to "Download." His idea was that the Medium Plasma Cannon (PLC-M) was armed as usual, but it could be Downloaded to fire like a Light Plasma Cannon. I like the terminology, but I honestly don't see the difference between arming a PLC-M normally (and then Downloading) or just arming as a PLC-L (from the very beginning, if the PLC-M had the option of either). This may just be a conceptual matter. Is it a Medium Weapon that "Downloads" to Light or is it a Medium Weapon that just arms in Light Mode to begin with? I suspect this is the reason he originally had his Light Plasma Cannon arming over two turns (instead of one turn) with 2+2, so that it could match the two turn arming cycle of the Medium Cannon (which could then be "Downloaded" to a Light Plasma Cannon in his original rules).

Therefore, after comparing the original Light Plasma Cannon to the Standard and Overloaded Disruptor Bolt, and taking into consideration some of Mike Raper's original intentions, I changed the Light Plasma Cannon into a heavy weapon that could fire every turn with an arming cost of 3 points of energy. The Damage per Range Bracket was scaled down, but made still be exactly half of the Medium Plasma Cannon's Damage. The Medium Plasma Cannon can still be "downloaded" (if you want to use that terminology) and fired as a Light Plasma Cannon, as long as the arming cost for a Light Plasma Cannon has already been paid.

Now for the major change to the Plasma Cannon. I realized that if you fly this ship (the Tychor Heavy Cruiser), you are basically flying a Fed CA with 2 PDP's acting as sort of Anti-Drones. This doesn't lend much to Tactics for the Tychor CA, because the Fed CA has a Drone Rack from which it can launch Drones and Scatterpacks (adding Depth to its Tactics). The Tychor CA doesn't have this ability and is just limited to its Plasma Cannons and PDP's. So, to add more Tactical Depth to the Tychor Heavy Cruiser, I made the tough decision to allow Plasma Cannons to launch Plasma Torpedoes. It also made a strange technical sense (technobabble) because a Plasma Direct Weapon could possibly be configured to launch a (limited) kind of Plasma Seeking Weapon. This is only be possible for a Medium Plasma Cannon (not Light).

As a Medium Plasma Cannon can score a maximum of 18 Damage, it didn't make sense to allow it to launch a Plasma-F (which could score 20 Damage maximum). A Plasma-D or Whipcrack Torpedo didn't make much sense either. But something which fit really well was the Plasma-E from the Magellanic Cloud. The Plasma-E scores a maximum of 15 Damage, which was perfect for a Direct Weapon (the PLC-M) which could score a maximum amount of 18 Damage. The Plasma-E requires 2+3 for arming, while the Medium Plasma Cannon requires 3+4 for arming. Therefore, yes, the Medium Plasma Cannon can launch a Plasma Torpedo instead of firing direct, but that Plasma Torpedo would score less Damage (15 max instead of 18 max) and be much less Energy Efficient in terms of Arming Cost (7 Energy vs 5 Energy). It then becomes something a Tychor Captain would use only if the combat situation Tactically required it.

Mike Raper had designed a Heavy Plasma Cannon which scored 30 Damage at Ranges 0-1. It could only be carried by very large starships, base stations, and starbases. I still haven't decided if this weapon is viable. For now, it does not exist in the Unearthed Tapes (Sub-Alpha). The only thing that makes me think it might be workable (with modifications), is the fact that a PL-R can be Bolted for 25 Damage (which is somewhat similar in max Direct Damage Potential).

Next came an examination of the Point Defense Plasma (PDP). This was like an Anti-Drone that scored a certain amount of Damage based on Range. It can only be used against Drones and Fighters and not Ships. A PDP basically uses the same rules for firing as an Anti-Drone (except Damage). After taking a look at the Anti-Drone Rules again, and then studying the Short Range Cannon Rules, I decided the PDP was fine as is. Playtesting will reveal if the PDP is too good in its function.

Finally, I was forced to omit the Phaser-3's that Mike Raper has included to guard the rear of the vessel. The PH-3 table simply would not fit on the SSD. The Phaser-3's were therefore changed to Phaser-2's, which already had their table on the SSD. Yes, that means the Tychor Heavy Cruiser will have slightly more Damage Output (at an increased cost) to guard the rear of the ship, but I deemed this acceptable as the Plasma Cannons were slightly reduced in capability (so they balance out somewhat).

Mike Raper developed an extensive Background and History for the Tycosian Republic, which will have to be heavily modified. He stated that the Tycosian Homeworld was found abandoned by the ISC and that the ISC performed Simulator Combat Practice against the (Simulator) Tycosians prior to developing the PPD (in fact, it was this Simulator Combat that led to the development of the PPD). Obviously, this changes Alpha Sector History and cannot be included. Mike also detailed some Design Limitations to Tycosian Starships, like not using Fighters and only fighting at close range. Some of these things will have to changed as well since the Tychor Republic has now been placed in the Unearthed Tapes (Sub-Alpha).

In conclusion, the Tychor Heavy Cruiser is now a ship with 4 Balanced Heavy Weapons, a plethora of PH-1's and PH-2's (but still on par with ships like the Fed CA and the Gorn CA), and two Anti-Drone-like Devices (which work slightly different than ADD's). For added Tactical Playability, each Medium Plasma Cannon can launch a PL-E instead of firing direct, but doing so is Energy Inefficient as well as Damage Inefficient. Much of the rest of the ship remains as Mike Raper originally designed it, with strong forward Shields, weak aft Shields, lots of Power (which is comparable to the Gorn CA's Total Power), limited Shuttles, and Firing Arcs somewhat similar to the Fed CA. Overall, the ship has been balanced to Alpha Sector Standards as much as possible (in my opinion).

The Tychor Heavy Cruiser is a good beginning for the Unearthed Tapes (Sub-Alpha).

Captain Grenville watched as his homeland grew smaller and smaller in the rear View Screen. Great Breoton consisted of three, immense, connected planets encircled by a multitude of smaller planetoids and moons. The great "island in space" was surrounded by turbulent tachyon currents and constant, violent ion storms. These formed a natural, protective barrier which kept out intruders and made it nearly impossible for an enemy fleet to invade Great Breoton. Captain Grenville felt a deep sadness as she disappeared into the darkness. His instincts warned him that he may never see her again.

Captain Grenville's family has served in Her Majesty's Navy for over one hundred years. His kin witnessed the evolution of each iteration of Britanni starship. Now, Captain Grenville finds himself commanding one of newest heavy cruisers to leave the construction shipyards. Armed with four Photon Torpedoes, all of which can be focused to either the starboard or port side, the H.M.S. Mary Rose was capable of generating great destructive force. Captain Grenville intended to wield that power wisely. He would make his family proud and bring honor to his family line.

Brittani has waged many wars against Hispania, Gallia, Germania, and others. And forged alliances as well. Our territories have long been in a constant power struggle with one another. But now all of that it under threat of annihilation.

Whispers have been ever present, of the slow growth and rise of an ultra powerful, unstoppable force, in a distant, far off region of space. Many have dismissed the whispers as just legends, superstitions, and myths. But Captain Grenville knew better. His instincts have always told him that their time was limited, that this unbeatable legion from "half a world away" would eventually make its way to their territories.

That time is nigh. Captain Grenville knew their only hope was to unite. To set aside their differences and present this new, deadly enemy with a unified front. It is said the irresistible juggernaut severely punished those who resisted and failed as an example to all. It is said that they assimilate entire peoples and worlds into their culture and way of life. In that way, their "empire" grows with each new territory it overcomes.

This great foe is led by a single Emperor.

HIS SYMBOL IS A FEROCIOUS HUNTING BIRD...A GIANT EAGLE WITH OUTSTRETCHED WINGS.

"Report!" Captain Grenville said loudly as he entered the Bridge of the Mary Rose and took his Command Chair. A triangle on the wall flashed red as it beeped loudly, indicating Red Alert status. Captain Grenville focused his gaze on the View Screen. The Mary Rose was speeding forward, stars racing by quickly.

"We have arrived at the source of the Distress Call," his First Officer reported. "A Gallia Heavy Cruiser, the Segomaros, is under attack by three unknown vessels. Each is the size of a Destroyer and employs technology never seen before. Clearly visible on each of the vessels is the image of a Blue Eagle."

The Science Officer continued. "The Segomaros has suffered significant damage to her Shields, but no internal damage. She has launched her two fore Plasma Torpedoes and has just turned so that she can launch her two aft Plasma Torpedoes. The Plasma Torpedoes are concentrated on one of the three unknown assailants. They will impact in five seconds."

"What is our time to intercept?" Captain Grenville asked his Navigator.

"One minute, fourteen seconds, Sir."

The Segomaros won't survive until then, Captain Grenville thought. His brow crinkled as anxiety slowly creeped down his spine. He wished he could change the laws of physics.

"The first two Plasma Torpedoes have struck the center assailant," the Science Officer reported. "No damage. Some kind of Shield has 'swallowed' the Plasma Torpedoes. I have never seen the like. Running scans now to gather more data."

A second passed. "The second two Plasma Torpedoes have vanished in a similar fashion, Captain."

"The three unknown vessels have launched a counter-strike. Three missiles composed of an unknown energy type. The projectiles are traveling faster than a Plasma Torpedo."

That's not possible, Captain Grenville thought. Nothing can exceed the speed of a Plasma Torpedo. Captain Grenville stared at the missiles that appeared to be composed of space and stars.

The Segomaros turned desperately to bring her two aft Phasers to bear on the incoming Seeking Weapons. Beams of light shot out, but had no effect on the Starry Missiles. As a last resort, the Segomaros launched a Shuttle acting as a Wild Weasel to distract the Missiles. The three strange Missiles continued to home in on the Segomaros.

Captain Grenville couldn't believe his eyes.

"The three inexplicable Missiles have struck the Segomaros! They have penetrated her Shields as if they were only made of silk webbing. The Segomaros is now in Critical Condition, Captain. She's barely afloat."

"Time left to intercept? We've got to get into this fight!"

"Thirty-four seconds, Captain."

Suddenly, the three unknown attackers bearing the symbol of a blue eagle turned and began to move in a direction away from the Segomaros. In the next instant, they were all gone.

"Wha...?" Captain Grenville exclaimed. "A Cloak?"

"Negative, Captain. I am detecting no trace of Cloaking Device emissions or particles."

"Why didn't they finish the Segomaros, Captain?" his Communications Officer asked in a confused voice.

"A probe," Captain Grenville replied, his fist clenching. "They were scouts collecting data, testing our defenses to see how formidable we are. It appears they were the smallest of those who threaten our region of space. The actual assault force is still to come."

"There's no way each of our individual empires can resist this foreign threat by ourselves."

"WE MUST ALL HANG TOGETHER, OR ASSUREDLY WE SHALL ALL HANG SEPARATELY."

THE OLD GUARD
STARDATE 02.18.22
SECTOR 50

In an isolated room aboard the Old Guard, Captain Severick sits across from William Schuler, his young Tactical Officer. Before them both, a computer projector displays moving images on the wall showing the Old Guard's most recent battle. There is a certain tension in the air, so thick you could cut it with a knife. The Tactical Officer is nervous.

"Mr. Schuler, your analysis of our recent engagement with the Two Babylon P3A Battlecruisers?"

Mr. Schuler was quiet for a few moments as he gathered his thoughts. "The whole battle was based on luck, sir. The Old Guard was simply lucky. But one day, our luck will run out."

"Lucky?" Captain Severick asked with curiosity. "Why would you claim something like that, Mr. Schuler?"

This time the young Tactical Officer was quick to answer. "Because we won only because the Babylon Battlecruisers were not aware of our Drone Refit. If they had known, the engagement would have ended quite differently."

Captain Severick rubbed his chin. He stared at Mr. Schuler with intense eyes. "And what exactly would have happened, Mr. Schuler?"

"The Two Babylon Battlecruisers would have been prepared for our Scatterpack. They probably would have had Wild Weasels prepared, possibly two each. They may have countered our Drones with Tractor Beams, although that wouldn't have stopped the assault. But combined with Phaser Fire, they would have minimized the damage from our Scatterpack."

A slight smile formed on Captain Severick's rough face. "If they had employed Wild Weasels, what would have been the disadvantage?"

"Speed, sir. They would have had to slow to a crawl. That would have given us the advantage of initiative. However, there were two of them. The other Battlecruiser could have covered the Battlecruiser that slowed down to deploy the Wild Weasel."

"Correct, Mr. Schuler. In the latter part of the engagement, we had the second Babylon Battlecruiser in a Tractor Beam. How important was that?"

"Critical, sir. Without the Tractor Beam, our Suicide Shuttle and Drone would not have been guaranteed to impact."

"And how would they have countered our Tractor Beam?"

"With greater power diverted to their Tractor Beam. Again, the Old Guard was lucky that the Tractored Battlecruiser did not have available power to boost their Counter-Tractor Beam. Their Captain failed to plan ahead appropriately."

"What else, Mr. Schuler?"

"The Old Guard boosted our Tractor Beam with Reserve Power. If that Reserve Power was used for some other prior function, we would have lost the Tractor Beam on the Second Babylon Battlecruiser."

"Your thoughts on the Babylon Battlecruiser in general?"

"The Babylon Battlecruiser is a swift vessel, more maneuverable than the Old Guard, but with key weaknesses. Notably, their Offensive Phasers are weaker than the Old Guard's. Their Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Shields are weak. Those Shields are prime targets for an Alpha Strike from the Old Guard. Babylon Battlecruisers possess slightly more overall Power than a Europa Heavy Cruiser, but we have the same amount of Reserve Power. We both have the same amount of Administrate Shuttles, which can be converted during battle into Suicide Shuttles and Wild Weasels. Their Disruptor Bolts fire more frequently, but are less effective than our Photon Torpedoes."

"Very good, Mr. Schuler. Always study and know your opponent. It could mean the difference between life and death for you and your Crewmates. Never forget that."

"Yes, sir."

"How essential is it that the Crew perform at the top of their abilities during the engagement?"

"Critical, sir. When we need to fire, when we need to launch Drones, when we need additional speed, when we need Reserve Power, when we need to reinforce Shields...these things must happen immediately upon command. There can be no delay. The Crew must perform at the height of their abilities throughout the entire conflict."

"And if they don't?" Captain Severick asked with one eyebrow raised.

"People die. People we know. People we work with side by side everyday. People we call friends. People we call family."

"Correct, Mr. Schuler. That is the price of failure. Never forget that."

"Yes, sir."

"During the engagement, the Old Guard performed a High Energy Turn after taking a blow to her Fifth Shield. How important was that?"

"Again, sir, critical. If the Old Guard had not performed a High Energy Turn at that moment, she would not have been able to bring her Photon Torpedoes and Phasers to bear on the second Babylon Battlecruiser."

"But isn't it true that the Suicide Shuttle and Drone did not require the Old Guard to be facing the second Babylon Battlecruiser?"

"Yes, sir. But right after we hit her with the Suicide Shuttle and Drone, the second Babylon Battlecruiser was vulnerable due to the Down Shield and Internal Damage. That is the point in the engagement where you demanded their surrender. Without our Photon Torpedoes and Phasers pointed at the enemy vessel, we would not have had that card to play."

"Excellent, Mr. Schuler. Any last thoughts on our engagement with the two Babylon Battlecruisers?"

Mr. Schuler went quiet. In his head, he struggled with whether he should say what was on his mind or not.

"Mr. Schuler?"

"I mean no disrespect, sir. You are the Captain and I am the Tactical Officer. But in my opinion, the Old Guard should never have engaged those two Babylon Battlecruisers."

Again, Captain Severick formed a slight smile on his worn face. "Oh? And what should we have done, Mr. Schuler?"

"We were overmatched, sir. The smart play would have been to retreat and seek reinforcements. Both Cruisers, the Colosseum and the Parthenon, were four hours away at maximum warp. Our Dreadnought, Stonehenge, was six hours away but in an opposite direction. The point is, sir, that there were other options for the Old Guard. We did not have engage two Babylon Battlecruisers by ourselves."

Captain Severick's eyes met Mr. Schuler's eyes without blinking. Both men saw what was deep inside the other's Soul.

"Well said, Mr. Schuler. Excellent analysis of our battle. My respect grows for you every day. Always remember, becoming tactically brilliant requires knowledge, wisdom, foresight, analysis, planning, perfect execution, timing, coordination, study, and constant review. It won't happen overnight. But one day, Mr. Schuler, you will be unbeatable on the battlefield. Of this, I have no doubt."

"Yes, sir, I will. I will make you proud of me."

Captain Severick stared intently at Mr. Schuler. Ah, the naivete of youth. It must be smashed into pieces immediately.

"NEVER FOR ME, MR. SCHULER. IS THAT UNDERSTOOD? DO IT FOR YOURSELF. AND FOR THE CREW. ALWAYS."

EVO-HABITAT

Elmo slowly navigated through the many space reefs full of corals, space kelp, cosmic algae, and star anemone that populated the Evo-Habitat. To his right, a school of deep space dwelling arrowfish swam together in unison like a cloud. To his left, phosphorescent star jellies floated in space as if suspended on strings like a marionette. Elmo was one of the Cuttleven, no longer a baby, but young for an adult. A thin fin encircled the entire mantle of his body, vibrating up and down like waves in the ocean to propel him forward.

As Elmo closed in on his favorite asteroid, he playfully swam with the many types of multi-colored space fish around him. He laughed to himself and tried to use his inborn telepathy to communicate with them.
<hello?>
<where are you going?>
<where are you from?>
<what is your name?>
But the space fish never answered him. Either they were not intelligent enough or they did not possess telepathy to respond.

On the asteroid, Elmo drifted through the green and blue star anemone searching for a modest-sized cosmic crustacean. It wasn't long before Elmo found one. Each of the eight short tentacles that sprouted from the front of Elmo's face projected short-range beams of light, driving the crustacean into an area where it had its back to a wall.

In the next instant, Elmo's body began glowing with spectacular bio-luminescent energy. His light flashed with rolling waves of intense illumination, mesmerizing the crustacean until it was frozen in place. Suddenly, a long appendage shot out of Elmo's mouth, snagging the hypnotized crustacean and drawing it quickly into Elmo's mouth. Plasma toxin penetrated the crustacean's shell, rendering it completely helpless for consumption. Delighted, Elmo floated backward with his delicious prize.

But in his zeal, Elmo grew careless. He accidentally bumped into a deadly anemone that released an electric shock through its tentacles. In his mind, Elmo cried out as pain as the electricity caused his body to jerk and spasm. Fortunately, Elmo didn't let go of the crustacean that was to be his next meal.

While recomposing himself, Elmo stared straight ahead at a dark hole that led into the center of the asteroid. His mother warned him never to enter the cave and he had always listened. But Elmo always wondered what was inside. Perhaps whatever danger that had frightened his mother was no longer there? Curious, Elmo slowly floated closer and closer to the cave, trying to see if he could spot anything with his unusual w-shaped eyes.

Little did Elmo know that two eyes had been watching him like a hawk from within the darkness.

THE MONSTER LURCHED OUT OF THE CAVE LIKE LIGHTNING, INTENT ON ENDING ELMO'S LIFE IN ONE SWIFT MOTION.

COLUMBIAD
STARDATE 04.14.21
PRE-HISTORY YEARS

Captain Dounia entered Engineering aboard the Columbiad. There she saw Argus, the Chief Engineer, working busily on the Warp Core as usual. The Warp Core was kept behind a large, red fence in order to protect it.

Argus was an old Greek man with a bald head and a white beard. His blue eyes immediately conveyed a sense of trust and honesty to anyone who gazed at them. Although aged, Argus still had a stocky body, along with a small pot belly. Argus was well known to love a good drink of wine.

“Hello Argus.”

Argus jumped at attention, standing straight up. “Captain! I wasn’t expecting you.”

“At ease, my friend,” Captain Dounia said in a soft voice. Her gaze wandered through Engineering like a butterfly before finally landing on the Warp Core. She stared at it for a moment, looking for imperfections.

“How are things going? Are we ready to set sail for deep space?”

Captain Dounia smiled partially.

“Anytime, ma’am,” Argus replied proudly. “She’s humming like a cat on its back being rubbed.” Argus chuckled quietly to himself. “I’ve got the mixture just perfect, completed several diagnostic tests, and she’s up to specs in every way. We can leave Terra Reserve any time you want.”

Captain Dounia nodded. “That is reassuring to hear, Argus. You know, as well as I, that the Warp Core is the Beating Heart of a Starship. From the Warp Core, vital energy flows to the rest of the ship, like blood flowing through a living body. The Warp Core moves the ship, without it, we would be stuck at Impulse, taking forever to get from place to place.”

“Yes, ma’am. I completely agree. My team and I know how important the Warp Core is to the Columbiad. We’ll be sure to watch over her like a Newborn Baby.”

Captain Dounia had great confidence in Argus. Not only did he have years of experience, but he was trustworthy, honest, hard working, and full of integrity. She smiled warmly.

“I know you will. Argus, I want you to know that you have my full support. Whatever you need, just contact me on the Bridge and let me know. If you have any issues, even personal matters, please come to my Quarters any time to discuss things. My door is always open to you, my friend. Together, we will Succeed.”

“Yes, ma’am. Will do. You can count on me, Captain. Together, we will Succeed.”

Argus bowed slightly.

Captain Dounia turned and left Engineering. She slowly headed back to the Bridge, checking the corridors, crew, and departments as she went. Adeena knew that she, and the Columbiad, would be heavily reliant on Argus in the times to come. She believed that Argus was like the solid roots of an ancient oak tree…strong , firm, and unyielding. She supposed that was why, long before Argus came aboard the Columbiad, he was given the Nickname at Terra Command of…

THE MIRACLE WORKER.
