I notice that range, ie. the size is of the map, is also adding to play time.

Yeah, SFBOL doesn't total damage for you. You roll the dice manually and consult the chart and total the damage yourself.

With phasers, you can click on numbers that will add up and then hit a report damage button on the phaser chart, but it isn't automatic (i.e. if, with P3's at R1 you roll 3, 4, 5 you can click on "4", "4", "3" on the phaser chart, and then there will be "11" in a total damage box on the chart, and you can hit the report button on the chart, and the dialogue will present "damage: 11" or something like that).

This game is using a 2x2 map setup (i.e. 4 total map panels) with ships starting at opposite corners (i.e. 80+ hexes apart). It is real easy to not be within firing range on the first two turns.

By Dana Madsen (Madman) on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 - 08:53 am: Edit

The size of the map means the first turn there is really no real chance for engagement. However each side can do some housekeeping, try and setup their range for turn 2. The second turn both sides could engage if they wanted and were aggressive. I went a little slower, had max ECM as I didn't feel like taking 11 prox photons on a unprotected E4, and wanted to setup a possibility of drone launch from the drogues. Ed turned away from me and let me drift out of his FA, so we only closed 12 hexes in the turn (range 46 to 34). If we both just plotted speed 20 and drove at each other we could have got within range 8.

So the first turn takes 45 min to an hour to play that isn't going to getting into combat. I could see starting closer or smaller map. But really it's not a big deal either. If people want this map size then it just means the first hour of the game goes to setup/advancement.

BTW, you can click on the damage box for the Disruptors and that will add that damage too.

Hello Jean Sexton, SPP, SVC,

Reposting: May I please have two new forum topics, under"Star Fleet Battles Online: Non-Sapphire Tournaments:"

* 500 BPV Tournament (this one, please leave intact)
* Compact Fleet Battles (new)
* Expansive Fleet Battles (new)

I will be the judge and adapt the rules for people to comment on, playtest, and generally measure demand and interest. Thanks! I've sent email too!

Also, yes, the message on map size is heard loud and clear. Some like it, some are indifferent. But, for this tournament, it is what it is, no changes until the next iteration, which will include a few different design choices, depending upon the "Compact" vs "Expansive" route taken by the players. Please vote with your feet!

I'd like some terrain; it seems like in TOS and such there was "stuff" to see.

I have been busy fixing the client. I will be contacting Justin today

By Justin Royter (Metaldog) on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 - 12:26 pm: Edit

cannot play, client is wrecked, its even worse now.. when I enter a "normal" sfb room I can see the 3rd gen ssd's but there are no boxes or numbers.. been like this for about a month now, unplayable.

By Eddie E Crutchfield (Librarian101) on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 - 03:11 pm: Edit

Paul what has been the problem, the version we have been using seems fine? Enter the room and enter the saved game and it seems fine. Is it a different version?

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 - 06:14 pm: Edit

There was a big update just released; I downloaded and installed it, and it seems to be fine? I mean, I'm on a Mac, so I dunno what other versions are like, but my update seems to be working fine.

By Eddie E Crutchfield (Librarian101) on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 - 09:37 pm: Edit

Dana and I have not updated yet. Paul is it recommended we update from the present version we are running, I have online client 4.6 and plugin 4.1.38

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Thursday, May 01, 2025 - 08:40 pm: Edit

Justin,
Is that on your SSDs or your opponents SSD.? If it is your opponent's SSDs then it is an issue with your opponent's version of the client.

By Justin Royter (Metaldog) on Friday, May 02, 2025 - 10:36 am: Edit

Paul I installed the new client and it seems to be working now, thank you.

Dana and I will be playing on Monday, he is off in the Canadian North right now for work or maybe the Klingon outback

Feds Vs Selts today noon pst.

By Dana Madsen (Madman) on Monday, May 19, 2025 - 06:38 pm: Edit

Ed and I finished tonight, he conceded on T5.

late turn 4 he was scooting along the south edge with the klingons in the middle heading to cut him off and the C7 had dumped battery to increase speed and close on his back shields, with E4's 4 or 5 hexes behind it. I'd tracked power well enough on T2/T3 to realize he couldn't have overloads and was holding either stds or proxes so I was trying to close at that point. His CS/CLC were in the front and the DWS was 3 hexes behind. I got the C7 to the #3 shield on the DWS on imp 32 and it was 6 hexes behind the CS / CLC/ DW. I shot 6 ph-1 which dropped the shield and did a couple internals. Then imp 1 Turn 5 the E4's fired OL, std each at range 8 (they were also on the #3) and the C7 fired 4 UIM Ol. E4's went very slow and put up 5 ECCM which meant no shift for any of my shots. I then hit with all 8 disr (really lucky rolls) and did 50 internals which mostly finished his scout. He had also tried beaming out some t-bombs from the DW but my drones mostly could fly around them, it wasn't a good angle for them to be placed and the C7 hit the DW with 4 disr on imp 25 when he dropped the shield. Didn't get many internals but I got it's drone rack so the DW lost it's ADD.

Ed tried to break lockons before the scout lost it's channels but only got 3 for 9 tries. He then killed about 6 more drones that were inbound on the CS/CLC. That left 14 more drones on the board heading for him (between 2 and 15 hexes), 8 were closer and 6 were a SP that blossomed at range on T4 imp 32.

My ships could launch 12 drones, C7 was going to deploy a drone drogue and then I could have launched 2 more SPs (1 from D6D and 1 from C7). Plus the C7 had launched it's MRS on T4 so eventually another drone from it.

He talked about turning in to try and get his CS/CLS/DW towards my D6D which was a dozen hexes off my C7's #3, but the D6D was moving fast enough to get close to the C7, it had 2 fully powered channels to put offensive jamming onto the CS and CLC and it had a few points of ECM itself with the ECM drone and a couple allocated. Anyways, any photon shot would have likely been at a +2 shift. Maybe only +1 on the E4's as they had no power to shift back to ECM.

The C7 still had 10 unfired ph-1 for the turn if they tried to get close enough to ignore the shift, and I think the fed would have had more drones inbound then his ships could deal with.
