A heavy battle cruiser or a super heavy cruiser?

By Mike West (Mjwest) on Tuesday, March 03, 2026 - 10:34 pm: Edit

I had originally proposed the Gorn YDN basically be a DN without the third bubble, but things went in a different direction. It'd be cool to see the idea used after all.

EDIT: To be clear, I'm not claiming credit or anything. Just saying it would be cool to see such a ship, regardless of the final design or credit.

By David Bostwick (Zarquon) on Wednesday, March 04, 2026 - 10:56 am: Edit

A DN without the rear bubble would be a Neo Command Cruiser (NCC).

In the SFB Master Rulebook, what is the difference between a Chart and a Table?

By Gregory S Flusche (Vandar) on Thursday, March 05, 2026 - 02:52 pm: Edit

A table you EAT AT? a chart hangs on the wall?

By Jack Bohn (Jackbohn) on Friday, March 06, 2026 - 08:41 am: Edit

EAT AT? Aren't you afraid of dripping stuff on your game?

By Jack Bohn (Jackbohn) on Friday, March 06, 2026 - 08:52 am: Edit

I see a lot of the things on SSDs are called tables, and a lot of the things called charts are very big, and sometimes they contain more data than is needed for one specific ship.

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Friday, March 06, 2026 - 09:34 am: Edit

There isn’t a difference, they are used interchangeably throughout the rules.

By Ahmad Abdel-Hameed (Madarab) on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 - 11:05 am: Edit

What's the scenario where the Romulans make a large-scale raid on a major Fed planet & BATS?

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 - 11:21 am: Edit

(SH63.0) Strike at Rigel IV in Module S1 fits that bill.

By Ahmad Abdel-Hameed (Madarab) on Thursday, March 19, 2026 - 03:34 am: Edit

That's the one. Thanks, Alex!

Can someone please unconfuse me regarding the mounted map panels available in the store (4002-5C and 4002-5 et al)? According to the descriptions, the hexes on the front are 5/8" and the reverse are 1.25" (edge to edge). This would make sense and make them consistent with mainstream SFB, original Megahex, and Module W.
The product photos suggest otherwise however. If you look closely, the first column of small hexes go from 1 to 15, but the larger hexes go from 1-9. That means that either the smaller hexes are actually larger than 5/8" (closer to 3/4") or the larger hexes are smaller (1.04"). Are the photos accurate? What are the actual measurements for this product?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, June 01, 2026 - 02:35 pm: Edit

SGP: I don't know for sure. The photos may not show the whole sheet. I did the maps way back when, and we're still using the same files. Now, at the very end I do remember stretching one of the grids a tiny bit to get things to come out even.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, June 01, 2026 - 02:49 pm: Edit

I had to go talk to Michael and on the way back to my desk (and today I can barely walk due to various issues) I happened to see a map panel laying on top of a stack of boxes so I grabbed it and measured it.

The big ones measure about 1.22 inches and the little ones measure about 0.74 inches.

By Stephen G. Parry (Mutant) on Tuesday, June 02, 2026 - 12:46 pm: Edit

Thanks Steve, I really appreciate the painful effort there and I hope your various issues resolve soon.
Those measurements tally, i.e. 9 x 1.22 = 15 x 0.74 to a reasonable tolerance.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, June 02, 2026 - 03:03 pm: Edit

I was eyeballing the decimals so it could be off a tiny bit.

By Stephen G. Parry (Mutant) on Tuesday, June 02, 2026 - 05:51 pm: Edit

Pretty impressive eyeballs if you ask me, especially given the mileage! I couldn't reliably resolve down to a hundredth of an inch (quarter of a millimeter as it would be here), and I have at least ten years advantage. I need my cheap set of digital verniers for that sort of accuracy.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, June 02, 2026 - 08:24 pm: Edit

11 inches divided by 9 is 1.22222222 so I was off by 0.0022 inches.

11 inches divided by 15 kexes is 0.733333 so I was off by 0.06666 a very significant amount.

By Gregory S Flusche (Vandar) on Wednesday, June 03, 2026 - 05:42 pm: Edit

within tolerances I would say

By Stephen G. Parry (Mutant) on Wednesday, June 03, 2026 - 06:24 pm: Edit

Actually by 0.006666, not 0.06666...

Do Tholian ship names in the Milky Way have a prefix?

I've been going through the Tholian MSB and a number of captain's logs, and I haven't seen any specified.

By Joshua I. Penick (Tricericon) on Friday, June 05, 2026 - 04:03 pm: Edit

The Starship Name Registry on this website says re:Tholian ship names "All preceded by TDFS (Tholian Defense Forces Ship)"

By Charles Leiserson (Locutus) on Friday, June 05, 2026 - 05:37 pm: Edit

Thanks!

"off by 0.06666 a very significant amount." To a mathematician, yes. To an engineer, it's "close enough".
