Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Company-Conventions-Stores-Ideas: SVC's Ongoing Projects: The Omega Gazetteer: Archive through September 02, 2011
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 - 04:12 pm: Edit

Omega fans want to create this data, so here's where they can try to create it.

PROBLEM: Nothing is valid until SVC says so, and SVC doesn't have time to check your research in more than very small batches. If you make up and post 100 planet locations, SVC is liable to go Klingon on your behind.

Most of the planet locations have never been established, and indeed, there are very few named planets/systems in Omega.

Most of the data will have to be "discovered by research" (I.e., sombody will have to make it up). Then SVC will have to decide if the data is acceptable or not, and he's busy, and you guys don't get to take over all of the available SVC time for this project. So here's the plan...

First, let's GO SLOW. If there actually is any extant data on where an omega capital or other planet is, then post it along with your references to prove that you know what you're talking about.

Do not make up (or post) any new data (locations for anything) until we're sure we have all of the actual existing data (i.e., somebody already made it up and SVC already blessed it) has been listed.

So start there.

If you start posting "I made this up" or "there is no data but logically it should be here" stuff, I will delete it without warning, copying, or archiving.

I am told that someone (Ken Kazinski) make an "omega map with hex numbers" and is sending it to Joel to post. That will facilitate this project. Joel or I will let you know when the map is available.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 - 05:26 pm: Edit

I'll start with the objects located in one of the more (in)famous hexes on the Omega map. (I counted out the hexes from one of the printed maps to get the location.)

Aurora III. Omega hex 2214. FRA capital world. Originally founded in Y112 as a Federation colony; transplanted to the Omega Octant by the Cosmic Nexus in Y130. Reference: FRA R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

Aurora VII. Omega hex 2214. FRA colony world. Largest gas giant in Aurora system; has at least three moons, one of which houses a mining colony that provides an important source of minerals for the Federal Republic. Site of significant battle with the Trobrin Empire in Y149. Reference: SFB scenario (SL292.0). Gary Carney 23 August 2011

Cosmic Nexus. Omega hex 2214. Celestial phenomenon formed by the close passing of two black holes. The cause of transfers from other parts of the galaxy to FRA space; expected to seal itself in another thousand years. Reference: FRA R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

Kraknora. Omega hex 2214. FRA member world. Originally founded as a Klingon prison colony, it was transplanted to the Omega Octant by the Cosmic Nexus in Y171. Reference: FRA R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

PX 123. Omega hex 2214. FRA member world. Originally founded as an ISC mining colony; transplanted to the Omega Octant by the Cosmic Nexus in Y178. Reference: Alpha Octant timeline, page 181, GPD4e. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

Storm Cluster. Omega hex 2214. The designation given by the indigenous Omega empires to what would become FRA space. Formerly part of Trobrin territory, the region lay within Mæsron space at the time of Aurora III's transferrance. References: Omega timeline and FRA R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

Un-named planet (ruin*). Omega hex 2214. FRA colony world. One of several star systems transferred to the Omega Octant prior to Aurora III's arrival. Host to the ruins of a long-dead civilization. Reference: FRA R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

Un-named planet (base*). Omega hex 2214. FRA colony world. One of several star systems transferred to the Omega Octant prior to Aurora III's arrival. Host to a former colonial base of some kind, now abandoned by its founders. Reference: FRA R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

Un-named planet (plague*). Omega hex 2214. FRA colony world. One of several star systems transferred to the Omega Octant prior to Aurora III's arrival. A world whose population had died of a mysterious plague; the factories and infrastructure they left behind enabled the Aurorans to adopt shuttle bomb technology (OJ5.0). Reference: FRA R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

Un-named planet (fallout*). Omega hex 2214. FRA colony world. One of several star systems transferred to the Omega Octant prior to Aurora III's arrival. A war-torn planet, its surface blasted by nuclear fires. Reference: FRA R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 23 August 2011

*I added these four descriptions to help future discussions for these planets; there is no formal entry defining each as such.

Should the neutral hexes be filled in light blue like the F&E map or left blank (white)?

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 - 06:04 pm: Edit

Speaking of the map, will the black hexes (for the Void, Wasteland, and Galactic Rim) still show their hex edges and numbers, or will they be blanked out the way they are on the published maps?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 - 06:38 pm: Edit

Ken: pick a "neutral color".

Gary: Dunno, ask Ken.

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 - 09:11 pm: Edit

Gary - they are black with white edges and white hex numbered text.

I will fill the neutral hexes with a light blue like the F&E map.

The Omega map is 64x31 hexes.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 - 01:04 am: Edit

I see, thanks.

But... to clarify, which context are the neutral hexes to be based around?

I recall from the discussion on the other thread that, aside from the "terrain" features which remain a constant (the Storm Cluster, Ryn Nebula, Nucian Cluster, Qixavalor Cloud and Jindarian Freehold; and Iridani Cluster, in a sense) SPP's stated preference was to have a relatively border-less map, on which the various planets could be added. Since the borders between states (or in some cases, the very existence of certain states themselves) changes so rapidly, applying any of the five sets of borders published would end up missing something. Therefore, the "bare bones" map would be pretty much marked as "neutral", with the exception of the terrain pieces, until (or unless) some sort of "core" territory (if applicable) for each empire could be added in.

Unless I'm mistaken in said recollection, of course.

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 - 01:50 am: Edit

I generate a map for each year not just one map. I have sent in the PDF's.

The terrain is black with a white boarder and white hex number text.

For each of the empires I filled in the colors based on Annex 7A. With some differences because of empires with the same colors next to each other having the same colors. I tried to make the make look pretty close to the back covers of each of the Omega modules.

I created one more map that was a negative of all 5 maps. I can tell you which hexes where controlled by which empire exclusively.

I would think this would be where the core worlds or home world for each of the empires that stayed around would be.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 - 02:07 am: Edit

One thing to bear in mind is that the fifth (Y210) map seems to have certain question marks over it, relative to the other four; if it turns out to be the most prone of the five to warrant a future correction, that might make relying on it to cordon off various "core" areas for certain empires less pressing an issue.

But, we'll see.

Oh, do you have a "blank" map for your own use? As in, one which one day could be used to work out maps for other time periods. (I recall someone mentioning the idea of one day doing a map showing how the various empires were poised at the start of the Great War in Y50, for example.)

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 - 12:22 pm: Edit

What size paper do you want the map generated for. I normally do 11x17 but I can change that.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 - 01:18 pm: Edit

11x17 should be fine.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 - 05:31 pm: Edit

I see the maps are up; they look good so far, but there are a few quirks here and there (for "Mæsron" and "Paravian"; plus hex 4831 should be black) but that's just me being annoying as usual, sorry.

These have confirmed hex locations:

Iridani Cluster. Omega hexes 6231, 6331 and 6441. Extra-galactic globular cluster; its distance from the nearest edge of the galactic rim is roughly equivalent to that between the Drexari home world and the Probr capital. (This distance is abstracted out of the published Omega maps.) Home of the Iridani Questors. Occupied by the Andromedans in Y193; liberated during the Grand Quest of Y195-197. Reference: Iridani R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Jindarian Freehold. Omega hex 4722. Home to the only known permanent territory held by the Jindarians. Attacked by Andromedans in Y199 and by Alunda in Y209. Reference: Omega timeline in OMRB. Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Nucian Cluster. Omega hexes 2912, 2913 and 3012. Celestial phenomenon; home of the Nucian Clans. Settled by Nucians (ethnic Vulpa who rejected their government's joining of the Mæsron Alliance) in Y20; host to numerous civil wars, one involving an entire clan (the Treska) who had been wholly assimilated by the Sigvirions. Absorbed into the Vulpa Confederacy in Y210, who annex the Yaskitor (bloodfang) Clan; surviving opposing clans fled to Mæsron space. Reference: Omega timeline in OMRB. Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Ryn Nebula. Omega hexes 2518, 2617, 2618 and 2718. Celestial phemonemon comprised of a hollow nebula containing several mineral-poor planets. Home of the Ryn Enclave. Attacked by Probr in Y64 and Y81, Mæsrons in Y137, Trobrin in Y181, and Andromedans in Y184 and Y186. Abandoned by the Rynish under mysterious circumstances by Y188. Andromedans move in to the now-empty nebula; fending off a Mæsron attack in Y195 and a joint Mæsron-Porbr assault in Y197, before being defeated by Operation Concerted Strike in Y204. Held by the Mæsrons by Y210. References: Omega timeline and Rynish R-section in OMRB, Omega Y210 map. Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Qixavalor Cloud. Omega hex 0923. Celestial phemonemon comprised of a nebula filled with volatile gases. Home of the Qixa Amalgamate. Infested by Sigvirions in Y103; cleansed by Mæsrons in Y111. Returned to Qixa sovereignty in Y160. Reference: Qixa R-section in OMRB. Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Un-named planet (Y103). Omega hex 0923. Qixa colony world. Infested by Sigvirions in Y103. Reference: SFB scenario (OS20.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Un-named planet (Y104). Omega hex 0923. Qixa colony world. Infested by Sigvirions in Y104. Reference: SFB scenario (OS21.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

These are noted in the published data, but have no set location. (However, in each case, there are only a handful of candidate hexes to choose from.)

Iridia. Location unknown. Iridani home world and Throne Planet. Occupied by Andromedans in Y193; liberated during the Grand Quest of Y195-197, though the primary shipyard was not fully restored until Y208. Reference: Iridani R-section of OMRB. Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Un-named planet (Y186). Location unknown. Rynish colony world. Successfully defended against Andromedan attack in Y186. Abandoned along with the other Rynish planets by Y188. Reference: SFB scenario (OS24.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

These planets/locations/etc have no location, but are harder to nail down.

Sa-Trada system. Location unknown. Host to an Alunda "ship-ranching" community. Ravaged by the Branthodons in Y112; the Alunda did not return to the system until Y190. Reference: SFB scenario (OS22.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Un-named moon (Y56-1). Location unknown. Mæsron colony world. Attacked by Vari using captured Koligahr ships in Y56, as part of the Combine's efforts to bring the Solidarity into the Great War. Reference: SFB scenario (OS1.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Un-named moon (Y56-2). Location unknown. Loriyill colony world. Probed by Koligahr reconnaissance-in-force fleet in Y56, which was repelled by the Loriyill. Reference: SFB scenario (OS4.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Un-named planet (Y97). Location unknown. Probr colony world. Host to a research station which suffered a catatrophic life support failure in Y97; its crew was rescued by the Iridani Quest ship Tikva and a Probr cruiser. Reference: SFB scenario (OS12.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Un-named planet (Y141). Location unknown. Ymatrian colony world. Reduced by the Drex during their war with the Ymatrians; mistaken for a "true" pre-spaceflight world by Iridani Baron Kevrian, who tried to land a sample fighter on its surface in Y141 (which the Ymatrians buried as an "unholy technological device"). Reference: SFB scenario (OS14.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Un-named planet (Y170). Location unknown. Mæsron colony world. Site of a clash between two Bolosco guild carriers sent by their Tazol-run trading firms to attack a base run by a third rival company. Reference: SFB scenario (OS23.0). Gary Carney 24 August 2011

Gary,

I don't understand what is meant by "for "Mæsron" and "Paravian";" The background colors I have for both empires is red.

I fixed the Galatic Rim hex 4831.

One thing I noticed is that the centered title is off on the complete map set PDF. I will get that fixed.

I could not find a Annex 7A for Omega in any of the product so I looked at the counters.

Let me know if you find any other problems. It only takes a couple of clicks to change things.

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 - 09:21 pm: Edit

2nd question - should the blank map have the terrain on it (Black Galatic Rim, Void and Wasteland Hexes)?

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Thursday, August 25, 2011 - 12:14 am: Edit

Why do all five maps say "Y210 Map" at the top?

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Thursday, August 25, 2011 - 01:00 am: Edit

Ken,

What I mean is that on the maps, Mæsron is written as "Maesron" (without the "æ") and Paravian is written as "Parvarian".

Also, the Jindarian Freehold is usually just marked as "JF", as opposed to "JFA".

Personally, I would definitely recommend leaving the "inner" (Ryn, JF, Nucian, FRA, Qixa) and "outer" (Wasteland, Void, Galactic Rim) terrain hexes on the blank map. As with the defining geographic features of the LMC map (such as the Core radiation shell and the various Fringe hexes), these terrain areas are important aspects to work with (or perhaps work around).

Besides, without the galactic rim, you can't show the separation between the galaxy proper and the Iridani cluster.

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Thursday, August 25, 2011 - 10:08 pm: Edit

Garth - I already noticed that. It is a artifact of Visio when I put the header in. I need to change from text to page name.

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Thursday, August 25, 2011 - 10:20 pm: Edit

Gary,

From the Early Years modules YR18 Paravian - This is the spelling I used.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Friday, August 26, 2011 - 12:51 am: Edit

Ken,

Have a look again at Paravian space on the maps as uploaded; it definitely says "Parvarian".

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Friday, August 26, 2011 - 01:29 pm: Edit

Gary,

Sent new maps to be uploaded to Joel.

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Friday, August 26, 2011 - 03:18 pm: Edit

Are there any other maps that need to be added. Does anyone have a Y50 map?

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 - 06:30 pm: Edit

I have updated the maps with a few problems found. If anyone has any other changes that need to be made please post or send me a e-mail. I will be generating maps Thursday night.

By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Friday, September 02, 2011 - 11:43 am: Edit

I sent updated maps and a blank map with just the terrain on it to Joel this morning. Please let me know if there are errors on the maps.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, September 02, 2011 - 01:52 pm: Edit

I told Joel to put them on WHAT'S NEW and Jean to link them on FlashBang.
