Expansion #2 of Star Fleet Battles, Designer's Edition Now Available

Return to the early days of Star Fleet Battles. This is the second expansion to the Designer's Edition. Rules were still being tweaked and corrected (some being made at the last minute with a ballpoint pen!), new ships and rules were being added, and new scenarios were being written.

The second expansion is available as an ebook from

Warehouse 23: http://www.warehouse23.com/products/star-fleet-battles-designers-edition-expansion-number-2

DriveThru RPG: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/134796/Star-Fleet-Battles-Designers-Edition-Expansion-2

Wargame Vault: http://www.wargamevault.com/product/134796/Star-Fleet-Battles-Designers-Edition-Expansion-2

As with Expansion #1, the book started with a few pages (19?!?) of updates (the dreaded errata were spreading like a fungus). These updates were not just corrections and tweaks to older rules, but included some entirely new rules and even entirely new concepts, such as the Impulse Activity Segment, emergency life support, half-size phaser capacitors, energizing phasers, shield costs were different for ships of different sizes, a limit on how far away you could control drones, limits on the number of probes armed in one turn, maximum phaser ranges (originally, this range was infinite), effective vs. true range, pseudo-plasma torpedoes, Klingon drone launch limits, fighters and shuttles no longer having to go their maximum speed all the time, dropping a pod as a really big wild weasel, skeleton crews, boarding parties deactivating wild weasels or suicide shuttles, hit-and-run raids to kidnap specific individuals from a ship, revised ship destruction force calculations (a concept that was totally crazy), major changes to cloaking including that chart to calculate if you can spot a cloaked ship (including a correction factor added to the rulebook via Steve Cole's ball point pen at the last second), weapons arming, pursuit plotting, carrier storage, landing shuttles on planets, and much more.

Actual new rules began on page 20 with the hellbore, fast drones, probe drones, expanding sphere generators, improved Klingon drone racks, multi-warhead drones, scatter-packs, chaff, identifying drones, firing modifications at small targets, scout functions, sideslip maneuvers, erratic maneuvering, nimble ships, booster packs (then called Dash Pods) for fighters and gunboats, crew quality, Legendary Officers, and fighter pilot quality (such as aces).

A whole new kind of unit appeared: pseudo-fighters! (SVC didn't understand what "pseudo" meant and later changed this to Fast Patrol ships and later still to gunboats.)

The Federation got its huge carrier, plus fighter shuttles, attack shuttles, SWAC shuttles, destroyer escorts, escort cruisers, the galactic survey cruiser, and the improved dreadnought.

Klingons got the B10 battleship, E3 Escort, G2 police boat, and F5S scout.

Hydrans got the Paladin, scout, Hunter, Dragoon, Knight, and Cuirassier.

Kzintis got the space control ship, drone frigate, fleet tug, and scout.

Lyrans appeared with the Tiger, Panther, Leopard, and Cheetah.

Gorns got their dreadnought. Orions got the Slaver, light carrier, and Light Raider.

(There was also the curious drug runner, which turned out later to just be a Light Raider stashing illegal drugs in the plasma-F chambers to keep them fresh.)

The new Carrier Group Campaign appeared, as did the Piracy Patrol Mini-Campaign and the Carrier Duel Mini Campaign.

New scenarios included Fighter Strike, Pseudo-Fighter Flotilla, The Mind Monster, The Trojan Shuttle, Tomcat Terror vs. Gunboat Diplomacy, The Cutlass Episode, Operation Cavalry, and the hilarious Tomcats over Leebyahh.

JagdPanther #9 Available from Multiple Sources

Amarillo Design Bureau has released another issue of this classic magazine.

Back in 1975, a small wargame club in Amarillo, Texas (led by Steve Cole) produced an award-winning magazine filled with articles, variants, and reviews.

Major articles included a system for random event cards for use in almost any game, a variant of the Spanish Civil War game covering a potential uprising against Franco in 1940, revisions for Third Reich (including German amphibious units, ways to bet money on the game, German and Italian and Russian paratrooper units, and the London Blitz), a review and analysis of El Alamein, ways to combine the Goetterdaemmerung map in the issue with France 1940 to allow the French to invade Germany first, more new ships for the game CA, a major revision to the game War in the East, rules to realistically limit Russian artillery in Panzerblitz, a new empire for Starforce Alpha Centauri, a review and revision of the game Wolfpack, and a variant for Turning Point.

The big draw of the issue was the complete game Goetterdaemmerung. (One feature of the game seemed to be how many different ways could be found to spell the title.) This game largely used the War in the East game system with a map that connected perfectly along the mutual edges. The game included paper counters, a 14x22 map of Germany, and four pages of rules.

Star Fleet Battles Designer's Edition, Expansion #3 Now Available from Multiple Sources

Be of stout heart and good cheer, for yet another frontier looms ahead of us.

The success of Expansion #2 had produced a demand for more Star Fleet Battles products. As Steve Cole and his new company (Amarillo Design Bureau) needed income, they were only too happy to do another product, later in 1982. This expansion focused on new ships (with 86 new designs including war cruisers and PF tenders), but included two new empires (Andromedans and WYNs).

As with the two previous expansions, this began with a few (10?!?) pages of updates to previous rules, including an updated Sequence of Play, Fractional Accounting (you no longer had to spend energy in complete points), the plasma shotgun (which should have been a new rule, not buried in the errata), balcony and track landing systems, a true cloaking device cost chart, segmented turn plotting (the last attempt to make plotted movement work), shuttle chain reactions, new rules for firing weapons through an atmosphere, advantage options, and quick reverses.

New rules included enveloping plasma torpedoes, aegis fire control, the WYN Radiation Zone, ECM drones, changing speed in mid-turn, PF tenders, war cruisers, complete mine rules, new Federation fighters (F18 and F16), minesweepers, carrier pods, Lyran trimarans, Romulan modular ships, Free Traders, armed priority transports, Federation Express couriers, and more.

New scenarios included Space Dragons, Minesweeping, PF Pickup, Incident on the WYN Border, Probing the WYN Cluster, Fi-Con Fiasco, Trojan Shuttle II, and The WYN and the Lion.

Admiral Kosnett's War, a new campaign, was included.

Background for the WYNs and Andromedans was provided.

The game, for the first time, included a Master Ship Chart, which was so complex that the typesetter refused to format it and Task Force had to use the version from Steve Cole's typewriter!

This PDF has been created by scanning the best copy available.

Those of you who bought the R3 SSD book from Warehouse 23 will notice that your book has been replaced. We added a cover and corrected a mistake that somehow crept into the 2012 version on the Klingon-Lyran Heavy Carrier Pod. The SCTY box should be an APR box.

JagdPanther #10 Available from Multiple Sources

Amarillo Design Bureau has released another issue of this classic magazine.

Back in 1975, a small wargame club in Amarillo, Texas (led by Steve Cole) produced an award-winning magazine filled with articles, variants, and reviews.

Major articles focused on a package of six variants for the game Sixth Fleet, a humorous scenario for PanzerBlitz involving a stockpile of wine (sought by US, British, Soviet, and SS troops), strategy and a variant for Spanish Civil War, a solitaire variant for the game 1914, strategies and variants for Third Reich, merging Panzer Leader rules into PanzerBlitz, a 1941-45 variant for the game Winter War, strategy for Diplomacy, a history article about King Arthur, and Zeppelins for Richthoffen's War.

The game in the issue was Marine! This was one of those semi-generic tactical games with a map of typical beachhead terrain and units comprising squads and heavy weapons. A player could build any battle by just counting out the right number of units and picking an appropriate part of the map. The "lead article" described "the mission and the man" of the Marines of all nations.

We've replaced the PDF files for the Federation Master Starship Book. Here's what we changed:

The following issues reported for the original printing of the Federation Master Star Ship Book have been corrected in this edition. They are listed here only to highlight what changes were made between the two printings.

All ship graphics were moved to generally after the first paragraph of the ship description so that they are clearly linked to the ship they represent. In some cases to facilitate page layout the ship graphic is not immediately after the first paragraph, but is still included within the rules.

(R1.1-2) Starbase: The fighter deployment section after the “if heavy fighter modules (R1.70) are present”: From Y183 onward there should only be 12 F-18C instead of 24; the additional modules have F-111s or F-101s.

(R1.1-2) Starbase: The fighter deployment section: “12 A-10 or 6 A-20F” should start at Y181, not Y180, per rule at right top of page. (Applies twice).

(R1.84-2) Free Escort Carrier: Duplicate text on the limitations of the fighters this ship could operate has been deleted.

(R1.89-2) Stellar Fortress: The fighter deployment section after the “if heavy fighter modules (R1.70) are present”: From Y183 onward there should only be 12 F-18C instead of 24; the additional modules have F-111s or F-101s.

(R1.89-2) Stellar Fortress: The fighter deployment section: “12 A-10 or 6 A-20F” should start at Y181, not Y180, per rule at right top of page. (Applies twice).

(R1.201-2) Advanced Technology Starbase: The fighter deployment section after the “if heavy fighter modules (R1.70) are present”: From Y183 onward there should only be 12 F-18C instead of 24; the additional modules have F-111s or F-101s.

(R1.205-2) Free Trader-X: The reference to Y127 should be to Y183.

(R2.113) NHS: Somehow the pictures for the NHA (R2.134) and the NHS (R1.113) got switched.

(R2.134) NHA: Somehow the pictures for the NHA (R2.134) and the NHS (R1.113) got switched.

(R2.FA14) F-101: For the F-101 Voodoo fighter (R2.FA14), the rate of launch of two drone per turn was updated to three Offensive drones plus one type-VI drone in Captain’s Log #36, page #28 left column bottom line.

(YR2.6) Ship graphic replaced to reflect earlier warp engines.

(YR2.9) Ship graphic replaced to reflect earlier warp engines.
(YR2.34) Ship graphic replaced to reflect earlier warp engines.

Captain's Log #8 Now Available from Multiple Sources

"Death seeks me. It will find me, in time. To run is simply a waste of energy. To embrace death is sheer madness. I await death. When it comes, I will be ready."

"To fight or to flee?"

"To die."

This 1990 issue introduced the new Doomsday Edition of Star Fleet Battles. Included were two fiction stories:

"Escape from the Holdfast" described a Klingon effort to slip into Tholian space and steal an entire ship (along with the secret of web technology).

"The Battle of Olsen's Reach" told the tale of the moment when the Federation tried to surrender and a mistake by a young ensign caused the General War to drag on for another decade.

Also included are: nine new SFB scenarios, the Federation battle frigate and war destroyer, an example of tractor auctions, Battleforce 2000 (a fleet designed to take out a starbase), Ask Kommodore Ketrick (it was Steven Petrick's debut), Tactics Board (covering boarding parties), Victory at Origins (1990, Thomas Carroll), and Ask Uncle Ardak. The much larger F&E section included a new scenario and two strategic options.

Hydran Master Starship Book Available from Multiple Sources

"Sir! What is that? It looks like a bug-eyed monster and I don't recognize its ship!"

"Cadet, after this simulation is over, you will return to your quarters and review the Hydran Master Starship Book. You will be tested on the ships tomorrow. And never, ever refer to the Hydrans as BEMs. Dismissed!"

The second volume in the long-anticipated Master Starship Book series is now available. It includes every Hydran ship in Star Fleet Battles, including X-ships, Y-ships, and R1 units that are specific to the Hydran Kingdom. Every ship is illustrated. All updates, corrections, and errata have been added. The ships are in order (regardless of the product they came from) with the enhanced format listing detailed information in a consistent manner.

This book contains the descriptions of the ships, but no SSDs.

A Call to Arms: Star Fleet Has Been Revised!

This exciting revision of the first volume includes the rules to play the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Kzintis, Gorns, Tholians, and Orion pirates using the Call to Arms combat system. This system is miniatures based (no hexes) and is very streamlined. There is no energy allocation (although some special actions will slow your ship down as your chief engineer diverts powers to whatever special order you gave). Each turn consists of one movement phase and one attack phase. Ships fire one at a time (or in squadrons) and if a ship is destroyed before it gets to fire, well, too bad!

All of the rules have been reviewed, clarified as needed, and are now in one location. All of the ships have had their stats reviewed and errors corrected. There has been extensive playtesting of this version. You will find that the ease of play has been retained so large battles can be handled quickly.

We are releasing the basic version as "pay what you want" in fulfillment of the promise that people who purchased the first edition would get free replacement of the rules and ship rosters. This is a limited-time offer.

This product is being done as a joint venture with Mongoose Publishing Ltd., under the strict terms of ADB, Inc.'s contract with Paramount Pictures Corporation.
