Federation & Empire Compendium Part 3 Is Now Available

Federation & Empire players asked for a compilation of F&E information from Captain's Log, putting all sorts of useful information in their hands in one easy book. Compiling all the information from Captain's Log #20-Captain's Log #40 actually took two books, Federation & Empire Compendium Parts 1 and 2. Now that we have wrapped up Captain's Log #50, we have compiled Part 3 with all the F&E information from Captain's Log #41-Captain's Log #50. We even hunted up information from the Captain's Log Supplemental Files.

All of the rulings, Tactical Notes, questions and answers, Ship Information Tables, scenarios, playtest rules, and proposals from those issues are in this handy compendium. Captain's Log #41 marked the release of the F&E 2010 Rulebook, so you will have all the information about it.

These pages have not been edited from the original publication, so you may find an earlier ruling is changed later on. However, with this collection, you will know the why behind such decisions.

Quick question-- does this include the ship descriptions and other printed material, or just the SSD's?

By Ryan Opel (Ryan) on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 - 06:44 pm: Edit

Just the SSDs.

By Charles Gray (Cgray34) on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 - 05:34 pm: Edit

So question-- where are the rules and descriptions available. Have they been folded into the big master rules book now? It's been a while since I played regular SFB and I honestly just don't have room for much in teh way of paper books anymore.

By Shawn Hantke (Shantke) on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 - 05:42 pm: Edit

The rules are in the MRB, the scenarios will go into a far future MSB (Master Scenario Book), the Fed and Hydran R sections are in their respective MSSBs and the other ship descriptions will go into future MSSBs. I believe the next one is Klingon.

By Howard Bampton (Bampton) on Thursday, April 30, 2015 - 11:05 am: Edit

Shawn- the Klingon MSSB is what Petrick is currently at work on as you noted.

Star Fleet Battles: Playtest Module E2 Available from Multiple Sources

"New Stars to Conquer in the Triangulum Galaxy!"

Beginning the exploration of this entirely new galaxy, this 64-page module includes three new empires:

The Helgard are strangers from another dimension who have decided to forge a new Empire instead of going home.

The Worlds of Unions consist of various species all controlled by Arachnid parasites.

The Mallarans broke away from the Helgards and carved their own niche.

Each empire comes with new history, weapons, and ships. New technology includes neutronium armor, rotary shielding, battle armor for Marines, multi-purpose defenses, energy absorbers, and the blur device. New weapons include the plasmatron, ram torpedo, proton pulse emitter, graviton beam, pulse phaser, hellfire blaster, particle shotgun, and hellblazer. Twenty SSDs give you enough ships to start the conquest of a new galaxy.

You must have either the rulebook for the SFB Basic Set or the SFB Master Rulebook to use this book.

Please note this is a playtest module. Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc. welcomes your feedback.

JagdPanther #14 (and Warsaw Pact) Now Available!

Amarillo Design Bureau has released another issue of this classic magazine.

Take a journey with us back to July 1976, when a small wargame club in Amarillo Texas (led by Steve Cole) turned into a real company that produced an award-winning magazine filled with articles, variants, and reviews. The "Iron Age" of JagdPanther continued with color cardstock covers, one-piece multi-color maps, and die-cut counters.

The game in this issue was WARSAW PACT, a World War III game with the Russian invasion of western Europe. The main history article was about the problems faced by the Warsaw Pact in conquering Europe.

Rules variants included alternate minor nation activations in THIRD REICH, a better First Punic War scenario for PUNIC WARS, a way to spread out units in any strategic land game, tracking pilots in BATTLE OF BRITAIN, the missing spells for SORCERER, British amphibious landings in any game about the North African campaign against Rommel, attacking German dockside depots in NARVIK, forming battle groups from destroyed units in FRANCE 1940, rules improvements for COMBINED ARMS, and splitting fire in MIDWAY.

Alternate history scenarios included German units in SPANISH CIVIL WAR, an alternate starting line for WAR IN THE EAST, German and Italian intervention in CHACO, and the German intervention in PORT ARTHUR.

New units included: submarines in the SPI game CA, stats for newly deployed real world units in MECH WAR, airborne and Marine units for REVOLT IN THE EAST, Dutch units in CROMWELL, shore batteries in WOODEN SHIPS AND IRON MEN, masked merchantmen in GLOBAL WAR, stats for more armored vehicles for TANK, and ironclads in the game FRIGATE.

New scenarios were provided for PANZER ARMEE AFRIKA (focusing on El Alamein), American intervention in a South American banana war in VIVA, a later scenario for WHITE BEAR AND RED MOON, a Wake Island scenario for MARINE, unbalanced scenarios in any naval game, WEST WALL (using units from each of the four games in the others), an alternative WW3 scenario for ANVIL-DRAGOON, and an Italian scenario for PANZER LEADER.

Reviews included BAR LEV, SEA STRIKE, BRANDY STATION, and FORMALHAUT II.

Captain's Log #13 Now Available from Multiple Sources

"Service in Star Fleet is two years of boredom and an hour of stark screaming terror."

Captain's Log #13 compiles the best of the material from the old Nexus Magazine.

"The Glory of the Heroes" is about a Federation base that is overwhelmed by a Romulan attack.

Information (which is now the Communications section) includes Convention winners, Origins reports from 1984-1987, staff awards, Klingon battlecruisers, Why, proposals board, Kommodore Ketrick, Ten Classic Questions, Speeding up SFB, and how BPV works.

Scenarios include (SP1701) Carrier Escorts, (SP80) Attack!, and (SP222) Eradication.

The tactics section includes Term Papers, Frigate Squadrons, In the Heat of Battle, and Ask Uncle Ardak.

The Academy compiles the classroom sessions (the professor asks questions of cadets with names suspiciously like the guys on the BBS) including the first session, Spencer's Gambit, Captain K, Expanding Spheres, Plasmas, Cloaks, Drones, Andromedans, the Coalition Brotherhood Banquet, Sending Gerard Home (Orion Tactics), Webs, the ISC, Mid-Term Review, and The Tactics Board.

Federation & Empire includes Q&A, Tactical Notes, Combat Missions, The ISC in F&E (18 years before they finally got published in ISC War!), and two scenarios.

Captain's Log #13 supports Star Fleet Battles and Federation & Empire.

JagdPanther #15/Battlefield Available from Multiple Sources

Amarillo Design Bureau has released the final issue of this classic magazine.

The issue presaged a new age with a new title (Battlefield) to get away from the WW2-based title of JagdPanther. To keep up the high count of many articles, a new "rapid fire" feature included several short articles so that others could be longer and some new regular features (Design & Analysis, Update) were added.

The game in this issue was Jacksonville: The Beaches of DOOM. This was a game about a Soviet invasion of Florida and well suited the national malaise of the time. This was an operational-level wargame in which units had a "protection" factor that approaching enemy units had to overcome before they could get into direct combat and fight.

Rules variants included alternate victory conditions for RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN, variants for WAR IN EUROPE, line of communication rules for ARNHEM, javelins in LEGION, Panama rules for INVASION AMERICA, FAST CARRIERS, and more realistic rules for FIRST INDOCHINA WAR.

Alternate history scenarios included new alliances for DRAGON PASS, and OPERATION OLYMPIC.

New units included the French fleet for WAR AT SEA, 1950s units for MECH WAR, and FIREFIGHT.

New scenarios were provided for KOREA and SORCERER.

Reviews included GUDERIAN, ROCROI, RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR, and JERUSALEM 70AD.

This issue has been scanned from the best available copy.

I have a lot of emotion about this.

That's the last issue we did, which is sad. But then, without JagdPanther I started looking for a girlfriend and ended up engaged pretty fast.

That's the last issue we'll upload (since it was the last one we did) which is sad, but there is a sense of accomplishment in that they're all done. It's also a matter that now, with them on all three stores, they'll never die, and be around for hundreds of years.

Star Fleet Battles Commander's Edition Volume I Revision 1 Now Available

Star Fleet Battles is still going strong today, but take a trip to the past with us.

It is 1983, and it is time for the phenomenon that is Star Fleet Battles to get organized. The game had grown through four expansions, and new material is being released every month. The structure of the original 1979 pocket game could not contain, control, or even keep track of the game as it had grown.

And so, the Commander's Edition was born, and would rule the game industry for nearly a decade. The original rules numbering system (whatever we thought of next got the next number) was discarded, and the rules were organized into the departments still used three decades later: A-General, B-How to play, C-Movement, D-Combat, E-Direct-fire weapons, F-Seeking weapons, G-Systems, H-Power, J-Shuttles, K-Gunboats, M-Mines, P-Terrain, R-Empires/ships, S-Scenarios, T-Mini-campaigns, U-Campaigns. The existing rules material was divided into three volumes, although volume I (this book) got most of the basic rules.

There were a lot of ships because even in that early time it was more ships that players wanted. The Federation had the original Franz Joseph ships (heavy cruiser, dreadnought, destroyer, scout, tug) plus the light cruiser. The Klingons had the D6, D7, C8, C9, F5, and E4. The Romulans had the Warbird, War Eagle, and KR. The Kzintis had the light cruiser, strike cruiser, carrier, and frigate. The Gorns had the heavy and light cruisers and the destroyer.
