ATTENTION CALIFORNIA AND MICHIGAN CUSTOMERS
In California and in Michigan, UPS has started adding large surcharges ($19 or more!) that we cannot absorb. As a result, we can only use USPS shipping to those states at this time. If you live in those states and accidentally choose UPS, we will ship by USPS and refund the difference.
Thank you for your understanding.

Thats great, I hope more business owners refuse to buckle to pass along ridiculous fees. If the majority bend and accept the fees (or simply pass them along to customers). Those few who stand up for their customers will suffer. If there is some solidarity those fees may go away (absorbed through other means).
I tend to use USPS anyway but occasionally Big Brown or FedEx.

Out of random curiosity, what is the stated reason for adding the large surcharge, particularly since it is aimed at just two states?
(Please, I am NOT looking for a discussion on whether the "reason" is an actual reason, or if it even makes any sense. I am just wondering what the stated justification is.)

It seems to be a surcharge for residential delivery. It's more efficient to deliver lots of packages to a business. They seem to be trying to force people to sign up to get their packages at one of the mailbox stores.

UPS has a tendency to take stuff to the USPS when they're overloaded, and just dump it on Uncle Sam to deliver. We had three packages sent by UPS that flagged as delivered the day before our regular postal person delivered them.
No doubt they try to charge those postal fees to somebody when they decide not to do the delivery themselves.

I've looked at the fees. UPS refuses to explain the fees to Stamps.com, which simply charges us for them. We don't know in advance which packages will get these fees. I just cannot justify paying $20 for a package that may only have $20 of items in it. It is a good way to go out of business quickly.

USPS has upped the price for shipping again. We had to match them, choosing the price for a priority mail flat rate medium box.
As always, I check to see if we can get it to you cheaper and refund any excess funds.

This may be a dumb Q (as I feel like you would have thought of this already) but is DHL an option in your area? They do both International and Continental shipping. They are a lesser known company that the highly marketed UPS/FE peeps.

I get shipments from my partwork model kit subscription where the sender uses DHL.
I've been following the tracking very closely, and all they do is pick it up from Ft. Lauderdale, truck it to Jamaica NY and dump in USPS's lap for the remainder to the west coast of Canada.
I somehow doubt that DHL would be any better than USPS.
