As to classified, it would depend on what Year Leannas would be written from. IE: X Ship speeds would be classified but CFs might not be.

Lets not get to cute for our own good. If I bought something like this and too much of the info was inaccurate/classified I would get annoyed and probably wouldn't buy another, or even anything connected to it.

By Mike Raper (Raperm) on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 10:22 am: Edit

Nobody said you have to a whole lot of it. But the reality is that Janes books do use that term for information that is classified or unobtainable. They also use "not available" quite often, particularly for non-western vehicles. The Japanese Type 74 tank, for example, is listed with classified armor and unavaialable fuel capacity. I could see X ships with classified top speeds, and ISC or Andro ships with classfied or unavailable range, speeds, etc. It makes it feel more real, and also provides a nice way to get out of answering questions that frankly don't have real answers.

By Glenn Hoepfner (Ikabar) on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 01:36 pm: Edit

Might I suggest that if a particular year is to be focused on, select the year that the first Andromedan was seen. That way, perhaps at the end of the book, present the "unknown" race as a teaser for upcoming issues.

By Richard Sherman (Rich) on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 03:38 pm: Edit

Glenn,

That would be Y166, and would rule a great number of classes that occurred during the GW.

Hmmm...that could be a good thing now that I think about it...

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 04:20 pm: Edit

Glenn, you proceed from a false premise. You apparently think that every race will be in "the" book. I said before, there would be one or more books per race.

Think of it this way. We FIRST have to do a LFS entry for one ship class, just to see how big it is and gain input as to whether we are presenting too much information or not enough.

THEN you look at all of the ships and classes of that race and decide how many pages the whole race will take.

THEN you decide if the book is too big or not. If it is, you have to divide that race into two or more books.

Say we find that the Feds have so much stuff we have to do three books. You might then do one book with the CA, DD, CL, DN, SC, TG, FF and POL and "date" in Y160. Then you do a second book with the DW and NCL and DNG and such a "date" it Y170. Then a third book has the NCA, division control ships, F111 carriers, and such as "date" that book Y180.

In any case, as you can see, there is a lot to be done before the question of dates is even relevant.

Remember that these books are a year away and we should be focusing on the first question, what kind and how much info do we need?

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 04:37 pm: Edit

Well, the first book would be the best seller for sure. Those ships are the most familiar to every one.

It would be very cool to find someone to do a 3D rendering of the FF class bridge based on Nicks plans.

Well, I took the liberty of putting this sample entry together for the Fed CA, based on the same format as the real Jane's books use. Sadly, it's in word, but you can still view it. Maybe this might be sort of what you want? Forgive the made-up stuff; it's just filler, but you get the idea.

One of the cool things about the Klingon source book for GPD was the ship descriptions. Way to go!

I convertet Mikes word doc to a pdf with openoffice it doesn't quite look right (page 2 is basicly blank)

you can get the pdf at http://lang.hm/SFB/LFS.pdf

By Mark Norman (Mnorman) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 07:28 am: Edit

I'd Guess that page 2 would be waiting for some 'photogaphs'

By Mike Raper (Raperm) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 07:53 am: Edit

Okay, I converted it here at work, and it looks a bit better. It does have to be rotated, but that's no biggie.

There should be a mention in the book maybe 1 page listing all the other sfb races someplace and a note that other books are ont he way for them.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 09:40 am: Edit

Wish I had time to do it over, but not before gama. Note we must do it portrait not landscape as i said before for production reasons.

By Marcin Radzikowski (Marcin) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 09:56 am: Edit

Couldn't you have the first page (description) in portrait for easy reading and the second page, the nice drawing, would be landscape. Printing and binding-wise it doesn't matter how the content is oriented...

By Mike Raper (Raperm) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 10:18 am: Edit

Well, that's easy enough; at least, converting it to portrait is. I'll fix it and re-post it later today, if you like.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 10:44 am: Edit

My contribution (for which I did NOT have time, but oh well...) This is page 1 of an entry that would be 4-6 pages long.

Very cool!

Here is a second page. I slopped this together with some art I had on file from Ted for another project.

Man, that's really cool. Much more detail than I would have thought.

Oh, well, here's a portrait version of the same thing I did earlier, with a bit more art:

This is cool. I've been wanting this for 20 years.

By Kenneth Jones (Kludge) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 11:56 am: Edit

I'm getting more excited about this concept all the time.

By Kerry Drake (Kedrake) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 11:58 am: Edit

Is it on the cart yet?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

By Les LeBlanc (Lessss) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 12:17 pm: Edit

I'd reduce the number of pictures for larger pictures, like the federation one. If going grayscale I'd not use the coloured backgrounds.
