How about Norfolk VA.

Scott:
Catan and Ticket to Ride are less expensive options and are excellent games.
They're not as tactically rich as a true wargame, but fun nonetheless

Anyone played ROOT?

By Tony L. Thomas (Scoutdad) on Monday, June 15, 2020 - 12:19 pm: Edit

Scott:
I have both Catan and TTR.
They are both considered Gateway games. Tactically, they are no where near as challenging as SFB, or Fed Comm... or even ACTASF. But the rules are simple, they can be played quickly (the box says 45 to 60 minutes, but my kids and I regularly knock out TTR in 30 and Catan in 45 minutes), and since a large factor is luck - even the tactically challenged can win. And since they are gateway games - you can use them to lead players into more complicated or more tactical games.

I would highly recommend both of them... just for the ability to find numerous opponents, if for no other reason. And if you check the BGG marketplace, you can often find gently used copies for significantly less that retail - not that retail is very much on these titles.

To add to what what Andy and Scott said, Settlors of Catan, Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne - are very very simple games to lean and so are ideal for new gamers to play.

For experienced gamers - all three have enough depth to partially overcome some bad luck (in Settlors, we always find one number gets rolled far more often than it does - 9 or 11 or something - and so the good players sitting on the 6's and 8's moan like heck!)

I would say, some of the newer Ticket to Ride version have broken their key rule of simplicity (there is a Western US Map - which includes Shares and a UK and Ireland Map which has 'research') - both make the game a lot more difficult and harder to learn.

A German Map (which I have) - adds Meeples, which are pretty easy to understand but perhaps for experienced players make it a lot easier to win (as the Meeples are worth alot of VP's if you have the most, a modest amount if you have the second highest and none if your third or lower - and there are different colours of meeples to collect- so a new player might collect 2 of each colour and have 10 meeples, and the 5 other players collect 4 meeples of just two colours, so only 8 meeples in total - but the other players score 15 Vp's each and the person with the most total of meeples, nothing as it just based on each colour total).

So check which version you are buying.

We play all three games on a regular basis at our Wargames Club - as usually we have about 60 minutes before everyone arrives for the main game (we all work in different areas and so getting to the club is more difficult for some) and so playing a quick game or two for those arriving first makes sense.

At lunch today, we had a discussion about bridge.

My father said that he'd heard the DoD prefers bridge to chess because with chess, the board is open to everyone participating, but with bridge, the players never know what anyone else, even his/her partner, has in their hand. The only thing anyone playing can guess on is based on what everyone bids.

It also occurred to me that bridge can also build trust in their partners; a trust that develop synergy with their fellow service people.

Carcassonne a family favorite :)

Euchre is another card partner trust building type game. (But occasionally you can go it alone.)

Netflix recently uploaded a 6-part documentary series about the early-to-mid history of the video game industry*, called High Score. (Here is the show's Easter egg-filled opening sequence.)

Has anyone here seen it, or intends to?

*or, at least, as it was in Japan and North America - there's not a lot of European content in the series, alas.

The Sudoku YouTube channel "Cracking The Cryptic" has a Kick-Starter campaign running. There's nine days left and only $26K to go to hit the last three stretch goals. I put my $19 in already.

Cracking The Cryptic kick-starter has seven days and less than $18.5K to go to reach all stretch goals. The hit the goal that adds more puzzles to the book.

CtC kick-starter === Five days left and less than $500 to reach the next-to-last stretch goal, then another $10K to hit the final goal.

So, it looks like Cracking The Cryptic will probably hit the $150K stretch goal (now sitting at $141K w/ 5 days to go), so they added a new $160K goal to the list. "By special request: if we can hit $160,000, everyone who pledges for a copy of the book will also receive a PDF copy!" Cool. Very cool.

Final stretch goal achieved with 50 hours to go! There's still time left on the clock, if you want to jump in. This should be The Best Sudoku Puzzle Book *EVER*.

Incredible! Still three more hours to go, but they have added another $25K to the total raised since Sunday. It's now at $185,706 with 7211 backers, and counting. Wow!

My father is 79 years old and I am trying to figure out a 2 player board game he and I can play. Ideally it would not take more then 2-3 hours, could be shorter if the game is good. He is sorta old school and I don't think he would be willing to invest enough brain power on anything that has a huge ton of rules. I think it would be ok if it were a co-op game of some sort like Pandemic (but not Pandemic, since he is afraid of - the Pandemic.)

Got any ideas?

Cribbage works for some people. Not really a board game though, but it's fairly simple rules, fast to play, and two-player.

Ticket to Ride allegedly works for 2.

Chess.

I remember as a teen watching old guys play checkers. At the time, I was big into chess, so I thought that was lame that old men were playing a kid's game. That is, until one of them challenged me to a game. Man, was I wrong. Those guys were ruthless. I lost the first, oh, fifty games before I got lucky and won once. Then I lost the next fifty or so.

Jack:
I recommend Ticket to Ride. Once you get the hang of it it takes an hr maybe. It's also expandable.
