Anyone here try Gloomhaven?
I have been playing... it's really good IMO.

Andy, my partner and I are about half way through as a duo in the main game, and just introduced a couple of friends to it via Jaws of the Lion. It is super great fun, and Frosthaven is looking to be even better.

Love the game. Our group of 4 has played about 20 scenarios so far and are really enjoying the "unlock" mechanics.

The game is a fantastic gateway to D&D.

Anybody playing TIMBERBORN? I have some questions I cannot find answers to.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, October 24, 2021 - 08:30 pm: Edit

JIGZONE is a really neat jigsaw puzzle site. I probably spend more time there (while watching TV) than anywhere else. As each piece clicks into place, it makes a sharp clacking noise that sounds like a gunshot and pisses off Leanna. Nothing I can do stops it. I have contacted them dozens of times for months with no answer. Discussion sites have endless complaints about them not answering questions; no one can figure out how to turn off the clack. Some complain that they accidentally turned it off, but do not know how they did it or how to turn it back on. Does anyone know? Can anyone find out?

Jigzone doesn't have a gear icon in the corner, so that's not the answer. Alas. Alakaday.

Has anyone here heard of a game called SnowRunner?

As shown in this overview trailer, it involves driving a series of real-world trucks and other such vehicles across different parts of North America and Russia. The base game includes three such regions, with several others added in the year 1 and year 2 expansion passes.

It's available on PC and on various console platforms.

I don't know of that specific game but I do know that just as there is a ton of Flight sim fans with elaborate flight controller and cockpit setups. There are also many Racing sim fans with elaborate driving controls and pedal setups. The are also at least three less popular though no less enthusiastic sim genres with elaborate controls and setups. Train and Subway sims are very popular in Japan and less so in the rest of the world. Trucking sims are catching on with modified racing sim controls and more elaborate gearshifts and etc. The oddest one to me though still becoming more popular are heavy equipment sims involving construction or farming equipment. I guess the last seems the strangest to me as I spent four summers driving a pea harvester and I remember it being very boring and very tedious, I don't see the appeal of it being simulated. A subgenre of the equipment sims are Lawn Mower sims were you sim landscaping. Anyway there are many popular games of those types and a person can spend thousands on the elaborate control set ups.

>> I don't see the appeal of it being simulated.

If it seems foreign and exotic to you, then it may be fun.

If it's your job it may just be boring. :-)

I think it just depends on where you are and what kind of life you lead.

"If it's your job it may just be boring."

I met my girlfriend Cindy when we were both doing our own paper routes.

I told her I was into gaming (mostly boardgame and wargames for me, but some computer games as well). She said she was too, and brought over her favorite computer game to play.

... and then proceeded to play the Atari game "Paper Boy".

I've been skeptical of many Bethesda releases after Fallout3 & Elder Scrolls Oblivion, like, I didn't think Skyrim was that fun/good and Fallout 4 just rubbed me the wrong way so I never got it. But I have to admit that "Starfield" is looking promising for potential modding to add SFU elements to the game from the simple/easy end by adding Phaser Weapons, or Trek Uniforms. To the more ambitious of adding space ship parts to the game. The scale of ships doesn't seem to match well with SFU ships, but I could see modding in Gunboats from different factions that kind of match the gameplay/functionality that might be expected within the context of the Starfield game.

I've tried tackling modding projects by myself in the past but this just feels too grand/big to do by myself. I'm wondering if anyone else on this board might be interested in trying their hand at modding the game together with me when it comes out?

The "Cracking the Cryptic" Sudoku channel on YouTube is closing in on 500K subscribers. They say once they hit that mark, they have some special things planned. If you like Sudoku, you should check out their channel, and subscribe if you like it.

Interesting. I assume that this is where the "never posts on the BBS" customers of ADB fit in.

By Ginger McMurray (Gingermcmurray) on Sunday, December 04, 2022 - 02:25 pm: Edit

I think the "never post" crowd is made up of a lot of people who enjoy playing but either don't know the boards exist or don't care enough to come talk. I'd bet there are more casual SFBers out there than theoretical ones. At least amongst those who can actually find someone to sit and play with.

By Jeff Anderson (Jga) on Sunday, December 04, 2022 - 03:05 pm: Edit

It's also possible that there are quite a few folks out there who feel nervous about posting here. Let's face it, SFB is one helluva game and can be awfully intimidating. I know from my own experiences, I was unbelievably hesitant about first posting here. I kept asking questions like, "Are they going to laugh at some of the idiocy I might accidentally post?"

Part of the reason why I post as much self-deprecary stuff as I do is to let people who may have those reservations know how warm and friendly these boards are. However, I don't think I'm getting through to them.

Just among friends, I think it'd be cool to see an article in Captain's Log showing the readers one of these threads. I feel that would go a long way to encouraging them to check it out and possibly join.

That's just my 0.02 Quatloos worth. :)

By Joseph Jackson (Bonneville) on Sunday, December 04, 2022 - 03:53 pm: Edit

I only discovered the BBS about two years ago, and stuck to just reading it for more than a year before posting.
Since I've been here, everyone has been super friendly and helpful.
I'm blown away by the knowledge and experience of the members here. It's still quite intimidating.
I just hang out and throw my two bits in whenever I feel the urge.

Just stay away from the political swamp as there are two 'gaters (Ally and Allie) who live there and love to eat limbs of those who stray into the swamp. :O

By Mike Grafton (Mike_Grafton) on Monday, December 05, 2022 - 07:45 am: Edit

SVC said years ago that there are a lot more customers than the BBS would indicate. And the knowledge of how many. and who they are, is a trade secret of ADB.

Seriously, there are 100 or so people that post regularly? 200?

By Ginger McMurray (Gingermcmurray) on Monday, December 05, 2022 - 08:07 am: Edit

There are always more customers than online presence would indicate. The vast majority of people, especially older demographics like hardcore wargamers, don't go online to talk about their games.

For example I'm a big RPG player and have been for decades. I haven't been on an RPG forum in well over 10 years. When I'm on one it's because I googled a question and was sent to a thread. I don't post and if the thread doesn't answer my question I go back to the google results rather than try and continue the thread.

SFB is the only game I talk about regularly. I'm in a couple of FB groups for different games but actual posting is incredibly rare. That doesn't mean I'm a theoretical gamer. It means I don't care enough about those games to be more than casual.

I think we'd get a better grasp on the number of players if we had a strong YouTube channel. But even that wouldn't come close to showing how many people actually play the game.

Moved to the country once I retired from US Army...
Very few players, mostly youngsters involved in Magic, Clicks etc type gaming....
My first internet linked PC (Jul 1999), got involved with Microsofts gaming site, doing Mechwarrior and flirting in their card games....
Been through a number of boards (mostly auto racing), that were ruined by idiots making them useless...
ADB has been great on keeping that in check....
So no gaming of any type in about a decade (give or take).. Though I try and keep up with SFB which I got started on in 1983....

Ahhh Mechwarrier - what a great game that was.**

Shame I stopped playing it fairly soon after I got a Microsoft Sidewinder Pro (????) Joystick.

I tried to get the 'top hat button' to work the directional Jump Jets.... but IIRC, never could!!

I also recently tried to find an adaptor for the 13 pin (???) cable... but unless I can get an old laptop to work (which has a CDRom Drive).... that will not help much!

(Unless it will work on a Windows XXXXXX+ machine - as I can always buy an external drive)??

Alos have a stack of the Mechwarrier Cards (and alas some really big stacks...which are stuck together as some was stored in the garage!!!)

** - Best Gaming Latop I ever had - Dell Inspiron 7000 - gorgeous screen and had an 8 Mb Graphics Card (it was 1999 to 2002....)... it was a tad heavy though!!

I played MW3 on a Win98SE machine...
My issue was being out in the country with nearly useless internet connection...
Never had enough speed to play MW4, gave up after a couple tries...

Attempted, but never kept a connection up long enough to get into SFBOL.....
Went through Starfleet Cmd/SFC II, never played it online vs anyone....

By Jeff Guthridge (Jeff_Guthridge) on Wednesday, December 07, 2022 - 02:36 pm: Edit

I remember playing the original Mechwarrior and was floored by its nature. Especially how the two most pathetic weapons in the table-top base game (machine guns and Autocannon-5) ended up being the most useful! If you were careful, you could stand just outside of activation range of the enemy mech, and just inside maximum range of the autocannon and head-shot snipe, or charge in with a locust and mach-gun-to-death while staying where the other mech can't shoot you.

Fun times. Fun times.

This sounds a lot like a ADB or Steve Jackson thing.
