I never watched Breaking Bad, or The Sopranos, or Game of Thrones, or...

Even though I have it on good authority that these were all excellent shows, I just haven't been interested.

N.C.I.S. Is a crime procedural television program detailing cases of the Naval criminal Investigative Service, whose area of specialty is investigating crimes concerning Navy, Marine personnel.

It was a spinoff of a very successful television series called JAg(Judge Advocate General) which concern the navy’s lawyers cases.

Since the news story above concerns the new Secretary of the Navy, I just figured many people would make the connection.

Last I heard, there was a probationary officer by that name back in the early '90s, from before the "C" was added to "NCIS".

He seemed to have some anger management issues, however. I wonder if his law enforcement career ever amounted to anything...

Maybe it's just me, but every year on this day, I think about the Battle of Midway and the state of the fleet, then I think about June of '44, when we had the D-Day landings, the Dragoon landings, and the Marianas Turkey Shoot, and I try to wrap my head around the sheer quantity of production and production ramp-up over a very brief two year period. Kinda boggles my (alleged) mind.

Watching that video reminded me the reason for the Swedish national holiday that they recently put in place (and few had asked for); the day Gustav Wasa was crowned king.
Sure, he had defeated the Danish and become the founder/uniter of the Swedish nation, but still it is a totally different story to yours.

At the end of our vacation this week, my father sent me home with a sizeable box of various things he wanted me to have. Among them was a letter from my great-uncle to my grandfather in 1943 from China, where he was fighting (while formally part of an "observation and support" force, the reality is that they wound up in the fight). Within the letter he enclosed two square inches from the wing of a Mitsubishi A6M Zero that had been shot down nearly on top of his unit.

Eighty years ago today...

Update on The U.S.S. Kidd, DD-661, a World War 2 Fletcher class destroyer, is currently under going over haul, refit.

Since the last post on March 29, 2025, the ship has been in a floating dry dock undergoing repairs.

Fund raising has been successful, so additional work on the ship has been authorized.

Along with the issues reported earlier concerning the use of galvanized steel deck plating (which resulted in extensive corrosion from poor maintenance procedures used by the navy back when the ship was in active commission,) it turns out the deck house structures metal composition was/is an Aluminum-Steel alloy. That, by itself wouldn’t have been a problem, but the hull was built from a non Aluminum-Steel alloy, which again, caused significant corrosion damage over the years.

Technically, the welds that connected the deck house structure to the hull, while all painted, corroded underneath the paint.

After replacing the Galvanized Steel deck plates, the ship was power washed with a high pressure water rinse, which penetrated the hull paint (which was not affected by the corroded material under the paint.)

The result were a fairly large number of holes where water penetrated into the hull, which now requires additional inspection and repair.

Another job that has been authorized is the plating over of the water access scoop that was used to supply water for the ships boilers. If the ship were to be recommissioned (say in national emergency), it would need replacement, but as a museum ship, the hull must be made water tight. If left un sealed, water could eventually enter the hull until it finds a weakness. Could show up a hundred feet or more inside the piping of the engineering equipment.

Just more issues one encounters when restoring a decommissioned ship that also happens to be more than eighty years old.

I am looking forward to visiting the ship after the refit when she returns to Baton Rouge LA.

Since we're on the topic of Fletcher-class destroyers....

...I was fortunate enough this past week to have a conversation with a gentleman who was serving as an electrician aboard DD-470 Bache in 1968 when she grounded and lost her bottom in hurricane-force winds at Rhodes (after having dragged anchor for twelve miles). The local folks brought out hundreds of cars to aim their headlights into the harbor for the crew - covered in bunker oil by this point - trying to get ashore, and then helped pull them out of the surf; a five-star resort hotel took them in and gave them ouzo, hot showers, and clean clothes donated by the locals (in that order).

Since we mentioned DDs, my dad was on the USS Drayton a Mahan class DD in WWII, then as he put it was wounded when a kamikaze struck it, and again in his own words was transferred to the USS Ozark LSV2 where he became a coxswain on an LVCP and landed troops on the beaches at Lingayen Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, and just to close things out in August
1945 they were the first ship to land troops in Yokohama.
