Does the movement in Klingon Armada use the same movement rules as in Starmada, that is, does a ship continue to move the same speed unless it uses thrust or is it more like SFB where each turn it has zero speed unless it applies thrust?
By Daniel Kast (Mj12games) on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 - 10:37 am: Edit |
The basic Starmada rules are reprinted in KA, which include the default movement system. So the strict answer to your question is "yes, KA uses the same movement rules as in Starmada".
However, as with any other part of Starmada, it is a simple matter to swap out the standard movement system for an alternative, such as that provided in the Starmada Core Rulebook.

Klingon Armada mentions that the ship cards will be available from ADB in PDF form for a nominal fee. Has there been any decision on when that will happen and what the cost will be?
Thanks,
Ken

Not yet, but we're working on it.
By Robert Finamore (Zarathud) on Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - 12:21 pm: Edit |
I posted this to the MJ12 boards, but figured I would repost here to ensure ADB is aware of the issue. I and at least one other person have printing issues on a few of the starship data cards in the bound version of the book. Based on the posts I have seen, this did not occur in all of the books.
On both Federation Heavy Cruisers, the Battery X arcs are listed as [AC] [AC] [BD] [BD] [GHI] [GHI] and then there are some unreadable characters printed after the second [GHI]. Are there additional weapon arcs that were garbled in printing?
On both Klingon D5 War Cruisers, both D5W New Cruisers, and both the Kzinti Battlecruisers, the Battery Z arcs are not fully readable. It looks like the arcs are [C] [C] [D] [D] but there are extra unreadable characters printed over these arcs. What are the correct arcs?

I sent that to Leanna. I cannot begin to guess how that could happen. I'd say that it cannot possibly happen, but obviously it did, so there is something that I do not know, and Leanna would be the only one who could figure it out.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - 02:20 pm: Edit |
Leanna cannot duplicate the problem, but says that "things can happen". She theorizes that this may not be a printing issue, but a "paper got twisted" issue. Normally, QC catches those (they are rare but fairly obvious) but may have missed one. Or, it could be some other issue we don't know about. Anyway, Email her (sales@StarFleetGames.com) to arrange for us to replace the pages or the book.
By Daniel Kast (Mj12games) on Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - 02:43 pm: Edit |
I have looked at the books we received from ADB, and they are fine. The affected firing arcs are as follows:
Federation Heavy Cruiser:
X Battery firing arcs should be [AC][AC] [BD][BD] [GHI][GHI] [JKL][JKL]
Klingon D5:
Z Battery firing arcs should be [CGHI][CGHI] [DGHI][DGHI]
Klingon D5W:
Z Battery firing arcs should be [CGHI][CGHI] [DGHI][DGHI]
Kzinti Battlecruiser:
Z Battery firing arcs should be [CGHI][CGHI] [DGHI][DGHI]
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - 02:56 pm: Edit |
Leanna checked the books we have, and none are bad.
She did another print run, and none were bad.
I know it happened (even if I haven't seen it) but I'm still baffled how it could happen. It sort of smells like the software glitch we had once when printing somebody else's PDFs for them, and some of the characters changed fonts, but it's not the same kind of mistake.
Could somebody scan a page and send us the jpg/pdf of the problem? We're baffled.
By Robert Finamore (Zarathud) on Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - 03:02 pm: Edit |
I will send scanned pages when I get home tonight.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - 07:47 pm: Edit |
Thanks. We are insatiably curious. We've never seen a problem like the one you describe, but then, we did not do the original file.
By Robert Finamore (Zarathud) on Wednesday, October 07, 2009 - 10:11 am: Edit |
Did you receive the file? I e-mailed the pages last night to the sales and design e-mail addresses.

Leanna will review it.

Just got the Klingon Armada PDF ship cards from Steve Jackson's e23 warehouse. Noticed one typo on a quick glance. In the Table of Contents, the Klingon E4 is listed as a Light Cruiser and that should be Light Frigate. Ths ship card (i.e., the important part) is correct so just a minor typo. Thanks for getting these uploaded! Looking forward to playing some more.

The rulebook makes reference to a new kind of base that I had not heard of before called a Star Fortress. The Star Fortress is listed as being the biggest of the space stations, bigger even than the Star Base. Has this appeared or been mentioned in SFB yet?
Thanks,
Ken

Yes, it has.

Steve,
Has a Star Fortress SSD been printed or has it only been mentioned and will be in a future product?
Thanks for the quick answer.
Ken

Wrong topic to ask such a question. (This is the topic for another product line.)

Just got my copy of Klingon Armada. Looking good, although haven't had a chance to play it yet.

Has anyone played this game yet(especially with minis)? Is it fun and does it relate well to the usual Fedcom experience? How do the different weapons translate in the game? Is it necessary to buy the Admiral's book to get more out of the game? I am planning to buy this game and the other rulebook as I believe in supporting any new SFU games that ADB puts out, especially if they allow me to get more use out of my fleet of miniatures. But I would like to know what to expect, and if it is something that I can easily convince my Fedcom playing friends to try out, or is it a really drastic change from Fedcom?
By Sean O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 02:04 pm: Edit |
Hmmm... IMO something of a drastic change from Federation Commander/SFB. Simpler, to begin with. That said, you may well find your FC players enjoying it. Main differences are:
- Plotted movement, not impulse by impulse movement.
- Weapon ranges are much longer relative to the speed of the ships. Feels much more wet-navy than aerial dogfight.
- At close range, a ship can easily blow up an equivalent size ship if it gets the perfect shot. Ships do tend to blow up a bit more.
- Simpler. KA adds strategy by adding more ships, not adding detailed options to each of the ships.
- Way, way better for big games than duels.
Similarities are:
- It's fun, with real strategy
- Weapons feel very much like their FC/SFB counterparts: Disruptors have long range and are very likely to cause at least some damage, but don't hit hard. Photons, especially overloaded photons, are horrifyingly deadly at close range but tend to miss a lot at long range (you do have an optional prox photon rule though).
- Suicide shuttles, Marines, even probes are included
- Non-combat equipment (labs, cargo and such) is included if you want to use KA in a campaign.
I don't think it's necessary to buy the full rulebook to get the most out of the game, but if you wanted to convert other SFU ships not included to Klingon Armada stats, it would be necessary.
As far as minis are concerned, it's pretty much the same as playing FC on the large-size hexes with minis.

Sean, thank you so much for that great info! I am now excited to get that game going and will order the KA game set and try to find that link for PDFs of the ships so that I can print extra ships. From what you said, I will have enough for a fun time with initially KA and the PDFs. Thanks again!

A question about drone racks. I notice that drone racks seem to have much less ammo than in FC/SFB?
For example, a Kzinti Frigate has four drone racks, meaning that it can launch a total of four drone flights per game, correct? And because it has a hull size of only 5, it is limited to launching two such flights per game turn. And a shuttle is also considered a flight. So a Kzinti Frigate could launch, for example, up to two drone flights or one drone flight and one shuttle flight (either as a seeker or a boarding pod) in one turn, assuming the drones and/or shuttle are available. Is this the correct interpretation?
(It's not that the rules are unclear, really, it's just that I think I'm getting confused by how they work in FC.)
